100% the 12pro look terrible, but this is on you man, sorry to say. You should not use hdr in the comparison, but the normal video mode. Dolby is at the moment just for apple device that can see it, they need to make a codec usable. Matti, I appreciate the actual informative details you put in this video instead of making it like a 99% b-roll commercial. I'm glad you added all the steps and comparisons it took to get the final product. These devices have a learning curve and mostly go underused in beginners hands
it's impressive how many people are trying to find out what apple actually improved on the 12. It seems most are trying to convince themselves they didn't spend their money for nothing... I got mine on Saturday and am really disappointed about the very little changes we get for the money. Just remember at the beginning of 2000 when every 6 months, mobile phone companies came up with crazy new innovations. Now, it seems they totally lost their creativity and innovation potential. It's just the "tech part under the hood" that improves, but the NORMAL user experience, the WOW, the surprises, the excitement of playing with really really new features, doesn't exist anymore... or is it just me?
What huge leaps can you expect from these things now, anyway? They already have more computing power than the Space Shuttle had less than forty years ago.
I feel everything you're saying. Companies definitely lost innovation and creativity. They see that whatever they're selling is a hit so they continue doing incremental changes knowing they can do much more. For example I have the 11 pro max and I'm more than happy and not interested at all to switch for the 12 pro max because the only thing that changed was the edges, they are now squared. But the camera and speed is very little that has improved. I will wait for the 13 pro max and hope they get rid of the notch and add 90hz or 120hz..
I just purchased the iPhone 11 Pro Max after watching your video and a couple others that compared its photos to the 12 Pro /Max. I tend to like saturated photos with warmer color tones so the iPhone 11Pro Max was perfect for me. I thought the 12 Pro photos were too bright & and the distant background was too detailed and didn’t look realistic. I also took Portrait photos in Best Buy and I thought the 12 Pro was too bright and even hazy around my face due to the lights. I hear that Apple has stopped selling the iPhone 11 Pro Max so I’m glad I got mine in time. I agree with you, the 11’s photos are better right out of the camera, and even though I edit my photos, it’s nice to have them look good with one click.
Well, I’m actually glad you botched the comparison, because every other youtuber does a regular comparison but you instead showed how good iPhone 12’s footage takes color correction and I must say I’m impressed! I should have expected this, since it’s 10bit, but wow. My 11 gets sooo noisy when I drop some preset luts :c gonna Trade it In for the 12 pro max soon 👀
@@justaguyfromreddit I’m totally waiting for the max. @Issa Baddie remember to not compare compare RUclips compressed video to on device recording ;) I was comparing iPhone 11 video to s10 with my friend and iPhones lead was unbelievable. Also noisy after heavy color grading is actually quite expected... the fact that iPhone 12 seems to handle this is mind blowing. For comparison even Sony a7iii on,y records 8bit, while iPhones now record 10bit! Unedited 11 and 12 will be similar, especially on RUclips (and you can see 11’s footage in the video - pro has identical sensor, lens and processor...) :)
Why didn't you mention that you can simply turn HDR off in the camera settings on the new iPhone 12? Instead you stated that to get good color out of it you would "have to" color correct. Misleading.
Good point! Well, can you actually switch dolby vision on and off or is it always active and so will all videos look that flat straight out of camera and have to be edited kinda professional with color grading etc?
Ahhh you’re so close to 1million! It’s been a treat to watch you grow these years! :) definitely got some good filmmaking tips from you! Unrelated but you’ve made me want a one wheel so bad. Although, not too sure how much I would use it. It looks so fun watching you cruise around on one!
I’m still confused on I should go with an 11 Pro or 12 Pro for vlogging. Literally starting from scratch and I really like the look and crispness of the 12 Pro. You stating color correcting will be a real job has me kind of scared, and the price of the 12 Pro gives me something to think about. After watching this, I’m still not sure which way to go :( Help me!
I actually did notice the difference in dynamic range and there was more of that light bleed / flare you get from cheaper smaller sensors. Especially obvious on the dark hat over the bright sky
Phone photography is just that, phone photography. It's suitable for mobile content consumption and can be passed off for some secondary use, but the small sensor is always clear when looking for premium quality. I'm not altogether impressed with the apple cameras. For the price, buy a solid mirrorless body. If you're stuck in post processing anyway, why waste your time with sub-standard images? The appeal would be that phone images can be used with minor tweaks SOOC not with heavy editing.
Even tho I don’t own any of them, and I am interested in one of them, but I honestly guessed B is the 12 pro. I love this kind of comparison because it allows me to chose based on what it looks better to my eyes regardless the age of the device.

Hey Matti! Just curious how big the difference, could you do a video comparing the cameras on the iPhone 12 Pro and an older camera, maybe even as old as an iPhone 6!
Its interesting to me because the shots where you had the cameras stationary, camera A looked better. The shots where you were carrying them and moving, camera B looked better. To me. Maybe I'm just weird? Thanks for sharing this analysis!
To be honest it was pretty hard to tell up until the timelapse footage was shown. The inclusion of a long shutter mode seems to be the biggest upgrade so far.
So crazy!!! Human forms look dang near exactly the same. But looking into the background... the grays are a bit bluer, there’s a little less green and more magenta (tiny bit). Background images have more detail, by that I mean more... dynamic range between highlights and low lights. But weird that people remain almost the same.
Saw your recommendation on twitter, fun video from Danny. As for iPhone. I think if you are using a phone, if you edit on phone all good. Otherwise, probably better not using a phone if you need to do complex stuff on a computer. The only reason I could tell the difference is because I expected the 12 to look "worse" in most cases due to the current state of Dolby Vision. But it also seemed to have better colours, specifically with skin tones. That being said, I think the footage is way too similar for anyone to consider upgrading from the 11.
Isn't dolby vision mode for HDR monitors? If you don't have an HDR display, the comparison is moot, but I've seen other youtubers disable the HDR mode, and problem solved.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will probably be a bigger difference but the only real noticeable difference was it was a bit brighter, the colors popped a little more (your red jacket for example) and some details were a bit sharper but not a night and day difference. I think the Verge’s video covered the difference it has to do with this Dolby vision and it being a new format they tweaked specific to Apple that displays don’t support the exact HDR type yet. iPhone 12 looks way better though. Skin tones looked like a plastic doll on the 11 when comparing to the 12.
Almost identical but there are frames that one is better than the other. I'm for A for the 12 pro. I'm wrong due to saturation on some of the 12 pro shot.

I have a question. I have an iPhone 7 and I want to upgrade. For about the same price I can by an iPhone 12 or an iPhone 11 pro. What do you suggest ?
Anyway great video ! Thank you
I have a Xr. Was thinking of going to the 12pro. But after this video, I am thinking of going to the 11pro. I use my iphone for photography, not video. Thoughts?
the 12 Pro looks sharper to me and less prone to flare
