  • Joseph recently bought a Paul Reed Smith Silver Sky John Mayer Signature from us and was gracious enough to come back and give us his thoughts about this beautiful guitar! It's no secret that PRS makes an incredible instrument, but just what exactly does an actual customer think of the PRS Silver Sky?

I bought a 2021 midnight rose/rosewood board SS, and I'm still really torn about the neck. In one sense, it feels really fast, and I suspect that's because of the subtle change in the carve as you go up the neck. The more rounded feel on the first frets is great for chording, and the slightly wider/thinner feel up towards the 12th fret makes soloing comfortable as well. The only improvement I'd suggest would be to go with a satin finish instead, but at the same time I know that Mayer himself likes to be really economical with his hand movements and doesn't like to move around a lot on the neck when soloing, so the gloss finish allows for a kind of anchor to the neck while bending. All that said, I feel like I've got pretty big hands and the neck is pretty huge when compared to a standard Fender neck. We all know Mayer made it for himself first, and so it makes perfect since why the neck is so big, due to his massive hands, but for the average player coming from any other strat, I could see how it would be too big of a change. I also just sold a 2021 Fender American Pro II strat, and the neck was so much smaller in comparison that it felt like a toy, so much so that I can see myself having trouble going back to playing any strat once I'm really used to only playing the SS. All THAT said, the pickups, especially the neck pickup, are easily better than ANY strat pickups I've ever heard. It's crazy to me that Fender has been around for so long, and on their first attempt, Paul and John made better pickups than Fender ever has, IMO. Overall, though, it's the best electric I've ever played.

Love the analysis! Definitely a guitar for big hands.
