happens to me a lot while I'm learning Layout. I've been deleting and recreating the failed dimensions so this is great news for me. Thanks Aaron

This happens to me all the time, so it's good to know why. I have "re-attached" the dimensions when needed. However, when working on complex architectural models with many revisions, it gets time-consuming every time you have to go back and re-attach a dimension, especially if cutting and pasting the revision for a minor move to satisfy a client's decision. It would be great if SketchUp/LayOut could develop a solution to the problem. I thought the issue might be with Layout line work on top of the model that might/sometimes causes the issue. Thanks Aaron for the insight, I've learned to live with it, but as a professional, it would be helpful to not have this problem at all.

That could definitely be an additional problem worth inspecting

I just had this happen to me. Happy to see a great explanation of why it happens and how to fix it. Thanks Aaron.

Is there a reason that you don’t want to use the Reconnect to Model option? That seems to be quicker in most cases than manually reconnecting each dimension individually.

    • @AaronMakingStuff
      @AaronMakingStuff 3 года назад +3

That will work if the dimension is disconnected due to existing geometry moving. If the geometry is replaced, it cannot reconnect.

Excellent information, as usual. What's killing me now though is I have a floor plan in LayOut that was set to one scale in the viewport, and then was fully dimensioned. I then decided to change the scale of the plan, but now can't figure out how to get the dimensions to match the new scale, without dimensioning and annotating everything all over again.

I love how sketchup can now be used to do everything. I've embraced it and just recently did a full set of construction drawings with sketchup and layout only. I wish I could share some of these works with a community, get some feedback....
My renderings are still not there yet tho.... modelling and layout; on point...

I have this problem often. Even worse, sometimes the dimension is changed to a different value, like from 16’ to 1 1/2”. Sometimes I can right click and choose “reconnect to model”, but more often it doesn’t fix it. Even if I erase the dimension, and redo it, it comes up with the wrong value. That phenomenon really stumps me.

It sounds like your dimensions may be connecting tot he page, rather than the model (1 1/2" would be a measurement on your page, while 16' would be a dimension in the model). Try turning off you Grid Snap and be very careful about snapping to points on your model.

Hi - thank you for the information and confirming about that solution. I have had that before, and corrected this but didn't understand or know what was going on within sketchup/Layout as per the entity "i.d.". My question, and I don't know if you would know the answer. Does Autodesk Revit see problems associated with entity i.d. in a similar way?

wait until you have a client ask you to mirror the floor plan at the last second after noting and dimensioning, I have not found an easy fix for this other than start over

Hi please keep up the great tutorials. Is it possible to explain in detail how to export to DWG from Layout covering in detail all the various buttons to enable drawings made in Layout to be distributed to other consultants using CAD 2D software. My experience has shown that certain rendering modes in layout does not translate well for 2D CAD for example raster vs vector mode etc.

I have that problem with Dimensions and Annotated text (arrows) when I open older Layout files created with SU-2015, and now opened and converted (updated?) to SU-2021 for additional work and revision. I have hundreds of these Layout projects documented in SU-2015. So far I've had to "fix" maybe 50-75 such files in the last 5-months since I bought a new Work Computer and had to install SU-2021 and Layout-2021. At first it was annoying, now it's just a tedious step that I just accommodate in the work-flow.
What I have found is some subtle differences in the Layout menu features available between an file updated or copied from SU-2015 to SU-2021 ....and a more recent file solely-created in SU-2021. Since I have dozens of "Mother"-files and Template files created in SU-2015 I'm slowly debugging as I go. For some files I just turn-off the "text warnings", and other I can just use the "reconnect" menu-commend. Others I have to manually reset.

Hummmm, very interesting. I have in fact had it happen and just re- dimensioned without much thought in the direction of a disconnect. But more a layering issue. Not layer as in Tagging, layering as in stacking. Having one entity on top of another. Even though deleting the original before placing / pasting the second in place. Although theoretically occupying the same space but not really. If that makes sense. If a line has a weight of say 10, is it 10 in depth also? Or just in X, Y planes. If it’s stacked, is the two 10 wide and 20 deep. Hummmm, now I wonder.

Happens to me all the time: I lock the Model layer, then just Select all (Command A on mac): right-click: reconnect to model. Typically sorts most of them...

That often works, but I have several models where the geometry changes enough, or component get changed out and LayOut does not know what to reconnect.
