MUSHROOM BROWN HAIR TREND | Formulation For The Perfect Ashy Brown

  • My client wanted to go darker and stay ashy. The mushroom brown color can be such a hard color to create cause the ashiness can grab and cause the hair to look muddy. I was able to create the perfect ashy brown that my client was so happy about.
    Formulation and application included in the video.

    Wow! I love her hair color. I'm doing this to myself but using levels 10 (ends), 9 (midshaft) and 8 (roots). I'm not a professional but I've been learning what to do from professionals on RUclips. Thank you to all of the professional hairstylists teaching people what to do so we don't mess up our hair. I'm using Sally's ION mushroom blonde hair color series in 8MB light mushroom blonde and 9MB very light mushroom blonde. I also use ION 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde, 9A Very Light Ash Blonde and 8A Light Ash Blonde. I learned to use 1 inch of the 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde so I won't go too ashy. I use the 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde in areas I have natural silver virgin hair coming through. After bleaching my whole head in search of platinum blonde (which I feel looks unnatural) I started adding in depth at the root with level 8 because I learned I'm a natural level 5, so I use a 30 volume developer to lift me to level 8 at the root. I use ash base (blue) to tone the underlying pigment. It works! Instead of killing my whole head of hair with bleach I'm slowing adding in levels 8 and 9, then I can pop in some lighter level 10 streaks. I learned all of this from people like you (Kristi Jennings) and Elle Bangs and Guy Tang! Thank you!!!

    Absolutely stunning!
    I recently used Malibu C CPR to remove unwanted color pigment from my hair after a color took too dark. It generally will leave you with a lighter brassy shade that you simply re-color to the desired level and tone. Problem I’m having is I’ve also got highlights so I’ve got about a level 7 (orangy) root with level 9 (yellow) highlights. Most shades I’m choosing for the root -to counteract the orange- seems to leave me with a little green tinge... especially if it rinses over the highlights (which I understand the yellow highlights + obviously the blue in the formula = greenish😩 & kinda makes me think I’ve got a more orangy/yellow root..?.). I’ve been trying the colors with a blue/violet base thinking I was on the right track 🤷‍♀️ Watching your video, the info about adding the N to keep things balanced and keep the 6.12 from over toning too much blue.... made me think this might possibly be the trick for me..?... My ultimate goal (eventually) is to go back to more blonde -or really heavily highlighted- once my hair can take it. I can never be blonde to the root cause it washes me out. So I’m generally a dark root (level6) with heavy highlights.... always on the cool side -what a battle to keep that up.. lol So I’m in love with the fact of possibly pulling the color in this video off until I decide to highlight again down the road. Do you think this will work for me with the situation I’ve got going on here?.... any info will be appreciated. You’re very talented! And I look forward to any help you may offer.

    • @hairbykristijennings6648
      @hairbykristijennings6648  3 года назад

      Yes! I definitely think adding in some "n" will prevent it from going to drab or ashy. That is tough with all the tones going on
      The blonde is porous so it could really grab dark and absorb the color. Maybe do a stand test, let it process and see if you're happy with the color. Good luck!

      I would think those sound ok? From not using the line I really don't know tho. I would think maybe to add a tiny bit of natural to the formulation? That way it prevents your hair from grabbing too ashy/ grey/ muddy.
      Maybe try just a strand first before you go all over to make sure you like how the color turns out. Good luck!

    Hi thanks for the video, the end results look amazing. I have natural black hair at my roots and slightly bleached (nutmeg colour) ends. Do I have to bleach my roots first or do I just apply the toner to my hair? And how long does the toner stay on the hair?

    • @hairbykristijennings6648
      @hairbykristijennings6648  3 года назад

      Yes, to get a lighter color your hair would have to lighten up quite a bit. Toning varies, just have to watch it to make sure it doesn’t tone too ashy and have a grey/ green cast to it

    hi Kristi, I have watched your video more than 5 times .thank you for posting . My hair is dark may be level 3 or 4 I am not sure .I had a box colour 4 months ago .it was loreal 7 . now there is a line of demarcation . the lengths of the hair are brassy .
    1 .how can I cancel the box colour ?do I need to change my whole hair colour? if so what should I use? or would the toner even everything?
    2.regarding the lighter toner combination .there are some grey strands obvious in the lady's coloured hair how can I avoid them Please? do I add more of the 5 -0 ?and how much? or do i add any other tone ?
    3.is bleaching to level 7 enough to achieve a similar result ?
    your response is highly appreciated.

    Thanks for sharing this video! Really helpful! I've just dyed my hair a dark ash brown (but almost looks like my natural black colour) and want to go for something lighter than my current shade but darker than the one in your video. What formula should I use to achieve a darker brown mushroom? I'm planning on trying out bayalage at home and then tone. Should I use less of the 5-0 and more blonde shade or the other way around since my base is dark? Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!!

      Thank you! And yes I would lighten your hair to probably a level 8/9. I would think that you could try and switch lines and see if you can come close to formulation, however I use the igora vibrance because I feel like it really cancels out brassiness. I use Paul Mitchell also but don't find that it deposits as well, it's more translucent. You might get lucky tho and be able to color match to the line you use

      Hello! Are you doing it on bleached hair or dark hair? Or natural hair?
      I wouldn't recommend using permanent color or 20 vol on previously lightened hair.
      However if you're using permanent color on dark hair, it will most likely just neutralize warmth but not make it nice and ashy. You'd have to lighten the hair then tone back down for a true ashy color. In my experience, anyways.

    • @hairbykristijennings6648
      @hairbykristijennings6648  3 года назад +1

      Ok I just watched it back lol for the root color I added the level 5 cause I wanted it to blend in with her natural, level 3 roughly. I didn't want to darken too much to her natural, but enough that it blends with her roots. If I didn't add the 5 then you'd still be able to see her grow out line with Just the 6/7 levels.
      I added the 5 to the lighter area just for some depth to the color so it didn't grab muddy, if I only used ashy tones. The 5 was "n" to balance the tones and prevent over toning. Also, I was playing with this line so I didn't have every color available.

      I have a hard time formulating in my head, sometimes I think I over think it but then it comes out ok. I never walk away from my client tho for this reason. Sometimes the hair grabs darker than it should. Sometimes you don't have to let it sit for the full time, well, I don't..... if I'm ever worried how a toner will grab, I start in the back and let it sit a few minutes. That way if I need to readjust my formulation it's no biggie.

      @@hairbykristijennings6648 hey kristi thanks for getting back to me. Yes I did but I dont think it actually said exactly how much of each color you used? I do better if I know if its 1 ounce each plus a splash of etc? • @hairbykristijennings6648
      @hairbykristijennings6648  3 года назад +2

      Oh ok! My math sucks so I'm not sure what grams would be in ounces. I usually try to record or explain the formulations so you can see exactly how much of this or that so you can make the formulation too. "0" means natural 5-0 would be natural level 5.
      Usually for any ashy tones, generally if you want it very ashy, just add 1/4 natural in your formulation to help prevent it from going muddy or over grabbing.

      @hairbykristijennings6648  3 года назад +1
