I just read how she died, so sad 😢
I am just now listening to these early opera recordings on in the Prima voce series. Love them! Supervia and Ponselle are two of my favorite women so far...

This is the second clip of Conchita Supervia I've come across in the last two days. Very pleased

Conchita Supervia one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. How grateful we must be to have these film clips of her and what fun she is to watch as well as hear as Musetta. Evelyn Laye is excellent dramatically and it is surely one of her best films from that perspective .

Sad to think that Supervia was dead 2 years later (childbirth) but Boo, who played 'Melba' lived on for decades. The REAL rivalry was not between Melba and Toti Dal Monte but between Melba and Tetrazzini...around 1908!

My Grandad George Treger was in this movie, playing the gypsy violinist.

nada es muy triste que la muerte de Supervia en el mundo de canto. For me, she was one of the best women singers ever

I totally agree. Dying in childbirth aged 36 I believe was terrible. I adore Conchita and have done so for many years. Her recordings are now difficult to
      obtain.

Has anyone tried recording some of our currently premiere singers using this technology? It may answer a few questions.

Evensong was a novel written by Beverley Nichols (?) who was a confidant of Dame Nellie late in her career. He says the novel was not about her, but many thought (and still do) that it was based on Melba, especially on one of her final tours of Australia. About an aging diva who is reluctant to give up the spotlight to younger singers. Supposedly there was tension between Melba and Toti dal Monte that inspired Nichols to write the novel after Melba's death. Though Dal Monte never admitted to this and she had kind things to say about Melba later in her (dal monte's) life. Without a doubt, Melba was hostile to any soprano who sang Melba's roles and she kept many of them out of Covent Garden. Selma Kurz and Alda to name but a few. Melba was also reluctant to sing with ANY singer who garnered as much applause as she. There is a famous tale about Ruffo that demonstrates this.

@Loobs666: I assume that's a cheap joke based on the word 'gypsy'. Then let me rephrase - my Grandad was a violinist dressed up as a gypsy in this film; he serenades the blonde actress with a beautiful solo. He died in 2002.

I've just been reading now, and it seems to be as De Lucia: witnesses say they didn't sing with the vibrato, and that the vibrato is sort of some distortion of the grammophon.

I know that Supervia is highly regarded but her very narrow or rapid vibrato is not attractive to me.But its all very subjective I know.

This is a tremolo vibrato ( hammer vibrato) what did conchita used. Although it sounds so amazing, it's not also the best because it's caused by a big preassure and tension in throat and then muscles in throat doesn't get power enough. But still Conchita had a beautiful voice and her acting skills looks so terrific.

@@discover4701 Thank you very much for that information discover. Now I know what a 'tremolo vibrato' is.
