This performance is so charming, simple, and captivating. If only opera directors could return to this style. It lets the music and drama speak for itself, which is always a GOOD THING! Ms. Piazza is completely charming and sings beautifully. Thanks for posting this.

NBC's comedy variety program "Your Show of Shows" inspired the format of Saturday Night Live." Over the years SNL had guest hosts with the same show biz stature as Melvyn Douglas, but I can't quite remember SNL doing opera, especially opera this good. And on live network TV yet. In Puncini's La Boheme, Musetta sings her waltz on Christmas Eve. Let's see someone top this at our Christmas Eve parties.

Just lovely, Marguerite! She was introduced by always dashingly handsome movie star Brian Aherne, once married to Joan Fontaine. Ah, early TV. So different and much more cultured than the too much pap we now get. No more Voice of Firestone, Leonard Bernstein Concerts, Omnibus, etc. TV has gone downhill ever since it started with few exceptions like PBS, BBC America, and other individual programs here and there..

I had the honor of meeting Ms.Piazza recently, and her voice is no less impressive now as it was back then. To answer your question she does not and did not smoke, yet ironically was a advertisement model for Camel Tobacco. (Back when smoking was considered a good choice, mind you)

I recently perused a copy of Life Mag from 12/4/1950. She was hawking Camels because they were (miraculously) easier on her throat! But almost every star was plugging cigs. Darn good money they paid.
Stan Freberg did not, and would not, sell his name to be used for either alcohol or tobacco. (I must say, I love pipes and cigars!)

You'll never see the major networks broadcast classy scenes like this anymore. Instead they show such junk as Amer. Idol, Dancing with (so called)Stars, etc., ad nauseam .

Is there some way these comments, that have absolutely nothing to do with the video selection, be removed?
I enjoyed Mdme Piazza's performance, by the way, thanks for posting!

  • @Thirdgen83

No you didn't. You meant to say exactly what you said. What are you gonna do, name every style of music until you guess what I'm into, by process of elimination? The music I am into has nothing to do with the fact that Opera sucks, AND you have just shown me that people who are into Opera are not very intelligent...

How sad, in a way, to again be reminded of how American tastes have shifted from the sublime towards the ridiculous-and fetid.

Where the hell do you get the idea that I'm into Country music? I HATE Country music. So what exactly does that "explain"??...

  • @Thirdgen83

Opera sucks. It's among the most nerve-wracking forms of cacophony I can think of...
