Battle of Dhi Qar (609) - Arab - Sassanid Wars DOCUMENTARY

  • Previously we have made animated historical documentaries on the battles of Yarmouk (bit.ly/2MAasKX) and al-Qadisiyyah (bit.ly/2QwTBvL) in our series on the rise of the Muslim Caliphate. Yet, there were many other reasons for the rapid expansion of the Rashidun realm, and the fall of the Lakhmid kingdom, which was the vassal of the Sassanid Empire for centuries was one of them. It sparked an anti-Sassanid sentiment among the Arab tribes and culminated at the battle of Dhi Qar in 609.

They say that the Sassanid killed him by getting him stomped by elephants, and that his sisters cried on his grave and red wildflowers grew where their tears fell. That's why red wildflowers are called Shaqa'iq Al Nu’man in Arabic, meaning Al Nu’man's sisters.

      Doesnt surprise me as Numan played a big role in early history Islam. Hanzalah for example is muhammad, and Hani, another leader of the Bakr in this Battle is Ali. These names didnt exist back then but were later invented when coming up with the hadiths and sirah of the "prophet".
      The chinese have an account about the first arab envoys coming to them in 651 and telling them about how there empire came to be. In that account they tell the chinese about exactly this battle and how it happened.

It's like they were asking for the Americans to come. Fully knowing that they have imperial agenda against them.

    Just so you know Al-Numan refused to sell his daughter to Khosrow although he knew how strong the persian army was.
    He went there in the hopes that Khosrow would imprison and kill him then forget about his daughter. That is why he took his family to Bani Wa'il.
    Remember this whole battle happened because Arabs held true to their word and protected Al-Numan's family.

      Oh arabs defeated us before and after? Then you surely remember Phillip the arab kneeling before our Shahanshah after being captured together with valerian, a scene which is carved in stone in our great mountains in Pars for the whole world to see.

      Being portuguese I can't really understand the obcession somalis have with this war. It's completly forgotten in Portugal and we were on the "winning" side of it. The only reason I got to learn about it was due to the portuguese commander, Cristóvão da Gama, being a son of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama. The portuguese contigent was about 400 strong, and even though it ended up changing the outcome of the war considerably it was merely another proxy war between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Ottoman Empire in the Indian Ocean. Given that the ethiopians revere a portuguese chainmail in one of their most sacred churches I'd say it's also a big deal to them. Neither side really won anything from that costly war and it paved the way for the Oromo to succesfully migrate into southern Ethiopia, further plunging the region into chaos. Guess it's just being used as nationalistic propaganda for both countries to fuel the dispute over Ogaden and K&G would be wise to stay away from this topic. The comments on the fall of Constantionople video were toxic enough.

    • @aden6832
      @aden6832 5 лет назад +4

      @@JoseSantos-xn4lp ita true that we somalis talk about it alot. But thats because it was a war of survival for us. It's just like how the poles say that they saved europe( by talking about battle of Wien). For us Somalis it feel like we won the war ( not in the abyssinian front which ended in a stalement). I kinda hope you understand our point of view. If the portugese had decisively won the war. Then probably we would have been one of the slaves sent to Brazil. Hope you understand.

    One thing I can't get my around in this period is just how these Arab tribes (and later the early Muslims) were able to not only fend off an established empire like the Sassanid Persians, but decisively defeat them in battle over and over again, and then against the Eastern Romans too. Can someone explain?

    • @heavenwatcher100
      @heavenwatcher100 5 лет назад +24

      Arabs had religious zeal and extreme morale at that time while Persia and East Rome were almost drained due to their constant wars. Later Arabs subjugated some remaining parts of Gokturk after it was decisively defeated by the Chinese. Later, Arabs advanced and conquered 90% of the Iberian Peninsular until Charle Martel stopped them with winter attrition and infantry. On the eastern front, Arabs also beat us Chinese in the battle of Talas since the general on the Chinese side was too cruel to its Turkish subjects thus got backstabbed by the Turks during the battle with the Caliphate.
      Finally, there was the siege of Constantinople during both 710s and 806. Really crazy to think in less than 200 years of time, Arabs fought all other great powers in this planet with religious zeal and some luck as well.

    • @pleasereadyourholybook2116
      @pleasereadyourholybook2116 5 лет назад +19

      It's a question that always bugged me as well. Both the Byzantines and the Sassanians were militarily and financially exhausted from near constant warring for centuries, culminating in the final Romano-Persian War of 602-628. Neither the Romans nor the Persians could afford another war so soon, and a big reason why the Byzantine Empire survived while the Sassanian Empire did not was mainly due to geographic proximity.
      Success of the Arabs had much to do with the Persian emperor belatedly recognizing the Arab threat until significant damage had been done. In his defense, the Arabs had tried forays and uprisings in the past and all were easily stomped out, so why would this last time be any different, right? The Persians also had lost their buffer state of the Lakhmids, providing easier access for the Arabs to invade.
      Worse, the Persians lost a shocking number of Spahbeds (generals) to Arab assassins in duels before battle even began. Persia's best generals (namely Shahrbaraz and Shahin) from the Romano-Persian War of 602-628 were all dead or retired by the time the Arabs attacked. One of the most competent generals the Persians had during their fight against the Arabs, Rostam, was killed in the decisive Battle of Qādisiyyah.
      Even worse, the Persians were not particularly united during this time. The final Sassanian Shah, Yazdegerd III, took power when he was 8 years old and was the 5th(!) Persian Shah to rule between a two year period of 630-632. Many nobles families in the empire did not respect or trust this newest ruler and some were quick to jump ship and surrender to the Arabs in hopes of keeping their privileged status after the Sassanian Empire was gone.
      Finally, The Arabs had one of the greatest military generals of the Medieval Era in the form of Khālid ibn al-Walīd, whose strategic and tactical brilliance cannot be understated. The man dismantled both the Byzantine and Sassanian armies sent against him. If you're interested in military history, I highly recommend checking out the book, The War of the Three Gods: Romans, Persians, and the Rise of Islam. www.amazon.com/War-Three-Gods-Romans-Persians/dp/1629145122.
      If you are interested in the fall of the Sassanian Empire and its gradual conversion to Islam, I can provide you a link to my Masters Thesis paper. Cheers.

      @@7yearsago440 The only surviving Kisra was Pahlevi Dynasty but they only reigned less than 50 years. Before them, Iran was constantly ruled by foreign dynasty.
      - Rashidun Caliphate (Arabs)
      - Ummayad Caliphate (Arabs)
      - Abbasid Caliphate (Arabs)

      *Samanid, Buyid and other Persian petty kingdom cannot be counted as Persian Kisra because they were actually vassal state of another bigger empire
