The Sassanid Empire was weakened after the war of 602-628 against the Byzantine Empire bit.ly/2BLg5lV and their defeats at al-Qadisiyyah bit.ly/2QwTBvL and Nahavand at the hands of the Caliphate forces effectively ended the empire. Still, representatives of the House of Sasan continued resisting and found allies - the Tang dynasty in China.

Rostram1369, The Sassanid empire =/= the persian emprie.
I am talking about what is colloquially called THE Persian empire, ie: the Achaemenid/Persian Empire that was ultimately put in power by Cyrus the great, and overthrown by Alexander the Great.
They seemed to have a great C&C infrastructure with their various governors, were handling rebellions well, still had a lot of wealth, troops, and people loyal to them in a lot of the more important places. They seemed to be just overthrown from without by Alexander. And of course, the inability to conquer greece in the centuries prior, but that still wasn't from within.

Ironically enough the Sassanids had no one to blame for this but themselves.
A few decades prior to the big arab expansions they had destroyed one of their client states, the arab Lachmids, who had functioned as a reliable bastion against any potential attacks from the arabian peninsula or the South-west in general.
This caused a power-vacuum that the new direct persian administration was unable to fill, which gave the newly united arab tribes the perfect opening to strike.

Persia/Iran is an interesting country. It's like the gate to east for the westerners, and the gate to west for the easterners, also the gate to the Central Asian steppes (north), and India in the south(-east). In a way it's in a similar position as Russia, and those nations have some sympathies towards each other.
And the core country of Persia is mostly protected by mountains, it's like a natural fortess. A 'plug' between Asia and Middle-East/Europe. Just think: there was only one country between Rome and China - Persia.
I think Persia is there to stop any one empire to grow too big. If Rome and China united - they would have ruled the whole world eventually. Or if they ended up in a power struggle, like empires often do, they would have burned the world.

The Inca's were great but their defeats were sooooooooooo embarrassing and due to bad luck from the tactical standpoint... If just one butterfly flew in another direction the day the Inca's fell the Incan empire would still be here today,,, because Yikes the Spanish were evil and got really lucky for their dirty tactics. Alexander was defeated by the Persians at the battle of the Persian Gates... It wasn't only a last stand it was a victory by outnumbered Persian troops who made the Greeks retreat... At the 300 battle the Persian's suffered heavy losses but they didn't retreat and still won over all those Spartans and Greeks.

    Amazing video!
Slight mistake at 1:43, the Shahnameh ("Book of Kings") was written by the persian poet Ferdowsi, around the year 1000 CE, some 500 years after Khosrau I. It was written to preserve the memory of their persian ancestors in the midst of cultural displacement by the Arabs. The book which Khosrau had commissioned was the Khwaday-Namag, ("Book of Lords"). It was written to preserve their own history, and may have even recorded information about the Achaemenids and Parthians, but this book is now lost.
By the time of Ferdowsi, the Persians did not know too much about their ancient ancestors, and it was before the works of Herodotus had been translated to Farsi. So during that time, the Persian scholars would rely on Jewish sources such as the Old Testament to gleam whatever information they could about their ancient ancestors such as Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes. They had even forgotten that the ruins of Persepolis was built by Darius, and so they called it Takhte-e-Jamshid, which means "Throne of Jamshid", attributing it to an ancient mythological king by the name of Jamshid. It was only in the last 150 years through archaeology and the deciphering of cuneiform that the truth started to come out.

Awesome work, guys! Also wondering, are you going to make any of your other series (Justinian restoration, Ottoman battles) into one long movie like the Mongols?

    • @KingsandGenerals
      @KingsandGenerals  5 лет назад

That is hard to do with Justinian and Ottoman. Stylistically they are different, also, the storyline between episodes are not connected well. Technically it is easy to stitch videos up, but it will be the combination of episodes, not a full movie.

This is the beggining of an era when Hungary was divided into three parts. One third became the part of the Ottoman Empire. The other two third parts of Hungary became an Ottoman and a Habsburg vassal. This is also a beginning of an era when Hungary has been continuously fucked and became the Habsburg dynasty puppet. Hungary never could recover from this. Indeed, battle of Mohács was one of the biggest tragedies in Hungarian history. Despite this, Ottoman series is one of my favourite series on this channel, and cannot wait this battle.

Great video, and I'm glad you're continuing to do stuff on Persian and Chinese history, but I am also somewhat annoyed by the little mistakes, like nails on a chalkboard for a pedant. Why was Roman Britain not part of the empire in your map of the entirely united Roman Empire? It was a province until 410 AD, long after the Sasanian Battle of Hormozdgan in Iran in 224 AD. And for that matter you misspelled it as "Hormozgan" without a "d", which I don't think is some alternate spelling.

Also, at 7:00 you show several sculptures of the Chinese Tang dynasty when talking about Sasanian Persians, but these statues, while probably showing people of the Zoroastrian faith, were Sogdians (an Eastern Iranian group) who weren't necessarily under Sasanian rule. In fact, at least one of those sculptures is a Sogdian from the 8th century, a considerable while after the Sasanian Empire had fallen to the Rashidun Caliphate.

Probably your most interesting video, and I've almost seen all of your videos multiple times, if not all. This is truly an interesting period in history as one of the greatest, what would you say.... cultural geographical empires ever came to an end and it also ties in very very neatly to an expansion of your earlier videos of the arabic/muslim conquests. It got me interested in this period and I've tried to look into it, but with little success. Especially Khalid ibn al whalid!! This video contains so much information, I must know your sources so I can plunge into useless information and satisfy my inner nerd!! :)

Extremely interesting topic really. So maybe, taking in account the sassanid-tang relations, during the battle of Talas some sassanid commanders fought alongside the Chinese. Also, a small note, Bactria is the name of the region next to Khorasan. Bactra (now Balkh) is the name of its capital city.
