Day 1: "Here's your WordPress credentials...are you able to center this picture on the login screen?"... It's like day 50 now and what I realized is about 80% of the job is just being the guy who just does it.
Remember you're doing something most people don't want to even do; people think I'm Neo when I say 'ran a query'.... Just know how the stuff works! Not every mechanic can work on any car, not every doctor can work on every body part, its absurd to think you need to learn every language.

Loved this talk. Gives me a sense of relief that the imposter syndrome is real, is everywhere and really is in everyone. I am not so keen to apply for jobs but really want to start a freelance web design and development business. I always worked as a backend developer, mostly as a consultant for projects with other developers and never really dived into client work myself so the web design + development work really is a little intimidating especially approaching clients and providing them with the web solutions they are looking for.
This talk really helped me understanding that its really is about putting yourself out there and then worry about the landing. As long as I am confident and proficient with my skillset I will land on my feet. Thank you Adrian and as always really appreciate Brad's talent to scope good such good mentors and making this possible.

    Nice points, Adrian!
A lot depends on whether you apply to a good organization, where the technical people help write the job requirements or a poor one, where some non-technical HR person pulls a bunch of acronyms off of the web.
In good organizations I've worked in, there's an expression people used to use when hiring -- "The purple squirrel".
It refers to the candidate that, on day 1, meets every single requirement specified in the job specification.
The secret all good hiring managers know is that there is no "purple squirrel"!
They look at your application to figure out if you have basic technical competence, have shown evidence that you have drive, like to learn new things and will be an asset to their organization. (At least for junior positions.)
My point is not to get discouraged if you can't check every box on the form. Apply, get an interview, think about what you can do for them and sell yourself!
    Good luck!

  • @JustScarl
    @JustScarl 4 года назад

    My expectation:
    - Design & create wordpress sites for small-medium sized business and have my work signed off by lead dev.
    Reality:
    - Helping support existing clients by answering support tickets. Could involve writing basic documentation on how to use a CMS feature/plugin, helping with common server issues or writing a small bit of custom code to implement a new feature. On occasion I'll produce a landing page or email to help with marketing, but beyond that Junior Web Dev is mostly about lightening the responsibility for the lead developer so they can work on bigger projects.
Of-course every agency is differen't and the smaller you get the more responsibility you'd expect to take on (Unless they use page builders). When looking into a job listing, I would look further into the company as-well to help you prepare for the interview.
Just apply to everything and find out if it's for you when you get an interview.

I have seen to many times where Senior Software Engineer or Senior Front End/Full Stack/Back End Developer is the title and I would speak with the recruiter and the description is not what I expected to out of a senior anything. Just give it a shot and believe in yourself that the hard work that you have put in is enough, because it is!

I have learned that one of the biggest requirement is to understand your data structures and algorithms very well and the ability to solve problems using code.

Just depends on the job. For your typical front end dev you don't need either of those things.

Great points. I have lived in that do-loop of trying to keep learning code. For 10 years and never have applied to a coding job. Same reasons. Which is why I ditched a lot of that and just fell back on Networking.

I'm out of work due to the pandemic so I'm all in on being a web dev. It's now or nothing, but i'm still not quite there yet, I'm halfway through "The Odin Project" javascript curriculum and it has been very rewarding. I promise when I finish this curriculum I will start applying for jobs.

I like the ones where they say it's a front-end web developer job with the typical requirements but then also 7+ years experience in software development, cloud computing, ux, and product development are the other requirements

After passing the Apache Spark interview there was a guy from San Francisco who asked me if I knew and could help with HTML-CSS also. I think in that case he was looking for an excuse :D Happy that I didn't end up there. Don't worry about the requirement lists. Worry about the team. What kind of people they are...

I've never had a job in the industry but I have been self-employed making apps for over 10 years now. Given the niche I work in, I qualify for zero, literally zero of all jobs being posted in 2020. I know from many years of experience that learning new frameworks, languages etc... is trivial and is something we do on a need-to-do basis. In a sane economy companies would be willing to give new hires a 2-3 week window to learn the tools and trim down the job requirements as they're posted.

Get a job in a warehouse. There are plenty of jobs in planning or scheduling for someone who is bright and willing to work with those on the production line. From there you will see people using all sorts of desktop and browser based applications . There will be a lot of gaps in functionality of those applications. That is where a junior dev can make a difference. Not working for the IT department. But for the production staff in the actual warehouse. Often the IT department ignores the needs of production.

My story is same as you *Adrian*, I know php, java, javascript, databases (SQL,Mongo), bit of designing. I wanna be full stack developer but i lose motivation of applying when looking at job advertisements. But i still applied at many but none of them gave response. I learnt laravel, django, MVC design pattern. I can solve real world problem and algorithms easily. So I stopped applying for now, and started working on my personal projects.
My point is that you don't need much only fundamentals you just need some who is in tech company who can settle you for your first job after that I'll become easy. Or you just need mentor who can guide you.

    • @AdrianTwarog

I think the basics of html, css and js is enough, especially when starting out, without knowing the inner depths of data structures and all that which isn't always as useful on the job when starting out
