I would like to thank you for such high quality of content. Your videos do not only teach us tech skills but also soft skills and all the different path that are available for us as web dev. This is super helpful! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while. I’m 40 years old and trying to start a freelance web business, so thank you for this.
Good stuff, Brad! Pricing - I used to own and operate another type of business that included a labor component. What I used to do is sit down and come up with a price that I thought this "project" is worth - for me to do and for the client (the fixed price). Then, I would also estimate how many hours it would take at a competitive rate. I would then compare the two as a sanity check. Sometimes they were close, sometimes not. The times they weren't close involved some more thought. I realize with web/app development we can reuse a lot of code and don't have to start from scratch every time - so this industry is a little different. The other component to this is competition. If you have a competitor offering the same thing for half, then you have some "selling" to do. I think it was the movie Boiler Room where it was said "Either you sell the client a reason to buy or they sell you the reason why they won't." Or, you just let the project go or figure out why you are double. EDIT: Also - Look in to liability insurance for in case stuff hits the fan. It's something we don't want to think about, but we have to. Thankfully I never had to use it, but it was nice to know I had it. Also look into a personal umbrella policy over the top of the business insurance. When you are a LLC or S-Corp/C-Corp, you are supposed to be somewhat isolated from liability personally. And at minimum - always get enough coverage to cover your assets.
Last week I was trying to figure out how to connect a contact form to firebase. I started watching a few videos from ppl wearing firebase shirts. I felt good about it at first, but they talk as if I should already know the info, they talk really fast, distract with useless sidebars that are jammed into place due to the rushed delivery. The whole things leaves me with a bunch of code that doesn't do anything. After growing a distaste for anything from firebase directly, I avoided them all and found Traversy Media. I watch 1 friggin video from you and boom...in like Flynn. That was the quickest I ever subscribed to someone. It's clear you care about ppl, and I appreciate the offering of knowledge that you put out there. Have a great day!

It's important to note that registering a DBA does not provide legal protection or establish exclusive rights to the name. It simply allows you to conduct business under a name different from your legal business name. Before obtaining a DBA, you should ensure that your legal business structure, such as your partnership or corporation, is properly formed and registered with the appropriate state agencies. The DBA registration typically assumes that you have already established your legal business entity. This includes Massachusetts and has been the law there for a long time now. Yes you can file for a DBA and not get caught (very very easily) but it is also not too hard to file the proper paperwork online. Here is the list of states that actually allow you to only file for a DBA: Arizona Colorado Georgia Illinois Indiana Michigan Minnesota Missouri New Jersey North Carolina Ohio Pennsylvania Tennessee Virginia Washington
