- In this episode, we will try to mod my beloved Playstation 4 controller to USB-C. I hate the fact that micro USB needs the correct orientation to connect. We will try to use a USB-C connector breakout board to accomplish this goal.
Can We Mod It? We will see...

Great, very detailed video. I wasn't sure about the resistors placement, so thanks for that.
Thank you sooo much! Have fun with your modded device! ✌️
Great job on this mod! For what it's worth, Marius Heier has made custom USB-C PCBs for the DualShock 4 that make this job plug-and-play. You should check them out! Additionally, I think you got lucky with the USB PD by using a 3A cable. I'm willing to bet that using a 5A cable and wall plug would not work because there need to be two resistors on CC1 and CC2 separately. This is a bit difficult to do on this breakout board since they're internally shorted, but it is possible by cutting the line and adding in a second resistor.
Hi CSab, thank you very much. Yeah, I've seen some mod boards out here, but I wanted to accomplish it with generic parts. I don't know if a 5A cable would work, unfortunately, I have no such cable at my finger tips.
@@CanWeFixThat nice to see other options for a usb c mod, I didn't have a nice experience ordering the usb c pcb from Marius Heier, waited over 1 month and parts still haven't arrive. I'll give this a shot. thanks for showing.
@Sora019 You are welcome! Glad you liked it! Please keep me posted if you manage to accomplish this mod. 💪
@@Sora019I ordered two and had no issue. I think he may be outside of the U.S.
that's how I did mine. easy as pie and dirt cheap. Marius is awesome.
Amazing mod . Great work!
Thank you very much! 😉
Hey man, Amazing work on this mod, i have a few controllers here and just got all the parts needed for the mod. In a few days they should arrive, hope I can make it work out lmao.
Also for the people saying that this is pointless because there is a prebuilt board being sold out there, I couldnt find an affordable price+shipping for the country I live in, however i bought everything i needed for a fraction of the price, even got some extra parts for safety. Sure i have some experience with soldering, but the point is that this is a different proposal. Instead of "heres the board, buy it", we have "heres what you need, what you got to do and where to buy it, go wild."
Hey! Thank you very much for this honest comment; I really appreciate it. You are right; I love developing DIY solutions without prebuilt kits. Isn't this the spirit of tinkering!? Great, I could inspire you to try it on your own; keep me posted if it works out; if not, I can help! 🤘🙂💪
Nice video again :) The ribbon cable sucks, I have a PS4 controller that I modified with paddles and a couple that I replaced the USB connector on. the more often you remove the cable and reinsert it, the higher the probability that it will break ^^
Hi Sebastian! 😉 Those ribbon cables are really sneaky! I am always happy when I don't need to plug and unplug them too often! 😆
very cool mod new sub great video
Much appreciated! 🤘
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers! 😁
Great video ❤
Thank you so much! I hope this gives you some ideas for the USB-C modding. 🙌
Awesome video. Thanks alottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttTT!
Thank you very much! It's always so satisfying to get feedback. 🙏😁
Thanks For so detailed video. Everything was explained nicely.
I request you to change the TITLE of video to " How To convert PS4 controller from Micro usb to Type-C''or similar. Bcoz I was looking for the same video yesterday by searching key-words like this and Couldn't find any appropriate video as good as yours.
Anyways I really appreciate your excellent work and hopefully I would definitely do it by myself to my PS4 controller. Thanks.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I'm thrilled to hear that you found the video detailed and well-explained. Your suggestion for the title is great and I'll definitely consider changing it to make it more searchable. I really appreciate your support and I'm glad I could help you with your PS4 controller. Thank you again!
Hey Makus. Thanks for taking my advice. I really appreciate it.
I request you make a same mod for PS3 Controller. As the time has been changed , it is hard to find MINI USB cables these days. So I hope we'll get to see the video very soon. THANKS.
@jogasingh294 You are welcome! 💪🏻 I have to say; Thank you! I will keep it in mind for future videos!
4:25 fourth pin is for device to be usb host like for otg cables. if that pin goes to ground ur device typicaly cellphone become host for connected device for example mouse
Yep! That makes sense; thank you for the clarification!
Finally did this mod to one of my older PS4 controllers and it works wonderfully! Thank you so much!
Do you know where I can get those trigger spring things? I lost them somehow
Hey! Thank you very much; it's great that you could mod it successfully. I would check out Aliexpress or eBay, but unfortunately, I have no links for you; sorry!
@erraddict I definitely can recommend UNI-T Products. But I am not sponsored in any way; I like their products. How about the UT61E+? That is the one I am using. amzn.to/3PybSZX (Affiliate Link). 🤘
33:04 those are regular 20 Ohm resistors one each line and multimeter must not beep when u probing them
What temperature do you set your soldering iron? I wish I knew ro use 500C when desoldering... Took me forever to get the USB port off my Vita. Also!l, thanks for showing how to add that resister to enable PD charging. I'm trying to get my PS Vita Slim to USB C. I dont think my hands are steady enough to solder on a tiny resister like that though
Hi! Nice that I could help you a bit. I really recommend low-melt solder for such desoldering stuff, it makes it really easy. Regarding the resistor: it is possible, you can do it! 💪
@@CanWeFixThat I only have a pack of 0805 resisters, I wonder if I can try and fit that on there?
I ordered MAIYUM 63-37 Tin Lead Rosin Core Solder which claims to be 'low melt' but when I tried using it, my soldering iron was sticking to it for some reason. Maybe my iron was not hot enough?
@ErrADDict Of course, you could try to fit them. If you need help getting it to work, you can buy the proper size afterward. The solder you mentioned is for standard soldering. I am referring to low-melt solder's only purpose is for desoldering, e.g., CHIPQUIK SMD4.5NL 😉
// If your solder won't flow correctly, use flux and try a higher soldering temperature.
@@CanWeFixThat I'm happy to announce that I was able to solder on that 0805 5.1K resistor! Wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be! Thank you! I'm super happy with my USB C (PD) Vita now! And.. off it goes to my drawer lol
Next project, installing a Picofly chip in my Switch Lite!
@ErrADDict Perfect! Very happy that you made it! Good luck with your Switch Lite mod! 🙌
Hmmmm; might tackle this on my DualShock with a broken Micro USB port; have you tried modding a PS Vita 2000 with a USB C port by chance?
Hi TechnicaVivunt, I have done it with a PS Vita 1000: ruclips.net/video/179Zr8-UA_Y/видео.html
Where did you get the binder with all the SMD resistors?
Hey Scott! Have a look at my newest video. I linked them in the “consumables” section. ✌️
What kind of Flux and hot air station do you use?
Hi Matt, I use the original Amtech Flux and the QUICK 861DW hot air station.
Since both CC lines are connected together, this mod won't work properly with e-marked cables. (the usb-c cables that comes with laptop are usually e-marked) The Raspberry Pi 4 had this problem when it got released in 2019.
Hi! Thank you for bringing this up. I personally don't own such cables, but it's very valuable information-thanks again!
@@CanWeFixThat You won't encounter problems with cheap cables. And I personally wouldn't use my expensive cables on my game controllers. So it's not a big deal.
@InfoDav Yeah, I would guess most people won't be affected by this mentioned limitation, but anyway, good to know!
It gives more responsible and good latency in PC ?
Hi! No, it is only a conversion from micro to USB-C.
@@CanWeFixThat because I compared between 4 and 5 controllers And I noticed that there is a significant difference between them in response speed type c is better in ps5 controller
@@robotly2325 I think that the PS5 controller has an updated chipset. That's why it's faster.
Why my audio port does not work without the battery? I solderd a usb into the power input and now I cant use headphones
Mhh, does it work when you put the battery back in? Or could it have been harmed during your process?
@@CanWeFixThat ye it does work with the battery when i put it back but it does not charge..
To be honest, it's hard to say remotely, but I would assume something went wrong during your soldering process.
can someone explain why is that resistor for ?
Hey! The resistor is only needed if you want to use a USB-C to USB-C cable. This resistor tells your charger that it needs to output 5V. 😉
@@CanWeFixThat whoah thank you for replying and can you tell how to identify vbus , d+,d-,ground without using mutimeter , or is there labeling of those somewhere online on both type c port pcb and controller charging pcb
@rahathunnisa7667 You are welcome! Do you mean specifically for the PS4 controller?
@@CanWeFixThat yes
@@CanWeFixThat and mine is abit newer version controller after yours so it has 1 screw on it not like your one which has 2 screws
😳
Not satisfied? 😁
bro just buy Marius Heier's.
Hi! This mod seems like a great option, no doubt about it! However, I was hoping to discover a solution that utilizes a more commonly available generic board. I still hope you enjoyed the video.😉
@@CanWeFixThat oh, my bad. now that i get your point i can understand it now. maybe you can mass produce it then that would be cool.
@@CanWeFixThathe released all of his stuff the dudes a great guy maybe u can use his schematics?
Hi! I don't plan to create my own custom boards, or what exactly do you refer to? 😁
