You make us all feel normal because, come on, dorkiness rules in the quilting world! And you were on a mushroom high thinking about that mushroom tree that's going to be in your cute corner in your dining room! 😘 Which, I didn't vote yesterday but I vote green! I love this critter quilt. When you started with these quilts I wondered how in the world this was going to work and you made it not only work, but it is just an amazing quilt! The recipient is so lucky to be on the receiving end of this! So fun to just look at all of it! From a distance that binding is perfect. It does not stand out at all and lets all of the critters shine! I love it! That unicorn in the middle is perfect! You have a gift for arranging the critters so that each one gets to stand out. I also baste with 505 spray and it is the best! Thanks Pat for this video. It is so helpful to know that even someone with as much experience as you, struggles with the same things we all struggle with when trying to get a quilt based in the space that our sewing room is and not with the help of a ginormous work space. Let’s be real here! Most of us do not have enough space to spread it all out! Thank you so much for showing it for real how to do it! You are awesome!

Love that Critter quilt! Such a happy thing to share, and so many contributers.
As for spray basting, I use my dining room table, since I'm way too old (81) to be crawling around on the floor. After I spray baste, I move the quilt to my cutting table and add a few basting pins around the edge and maybe a couple in the middle. I do this because I don't always get the quilting done right away and this holds everything stable until I get to it.

Hi Pat. I also live in a small home so I use the ironing board. I spray & pin after ironing the quilt back and top little by little as I move it up. When I get to the end, I trim with at least 3 inch extra around. I one time ran short on the back or batting so I make sure to have extra now so I don’t have to piece extra in later.

Great demo of basting with 505. It is my go-to method. I find pressing top and bottom after the spray basting helps eliminate ripples also. Large quilts can be a bear to manipulate, but I think I get better results with spray basting than with pins.

Pat, My grandmother had glass candy jars lined up on a shelf in her kitchen. When I was a kid I used to love seeing those jars filled with all those wonderful candies you're talking about. One that I really loved were these little mints that I think were called butter mints. When putting one in one's mouth they melted into this wonderful buttery/minty taste. Now that we're back living in the area where I grew up I need to see if they still sell those. So delicious! I really don't remember there being much chocolate. I wonder if it was too expensive. My mom would always buy a box of the Whitman's Sampler chocolates every Christmas. Those were such a treat.

My husband made me a rectangular iron board that’s awesome. Found the pattern on Pinterest. I used 2 layers of cotton batting and covered it with muslin. I need to change out the muslin, since it’s so stained from using spray starches. I have a piece of Teflon fabric to put on there. I need help from my hubby to do that. Some day we’ll get to it.

    • @katherinephillips8952
      @katherinephillips8952 Год назад +1

My husband made me one, too! I started with my ironing board, folded flat, on top of the dresser holding hand sewing supplies. It saved floor space. To replace it, we cut a piece of plywood the same size as😊😊 the dresser top. Then, covered it with 2 layers of thin polyester batting. We held it in place with staples. For the final layer, I used a piece of brushed denim left over from my garment sewing days for the ironing surface. It works very well. The nap helps hold the blocks in place while I'm pressing seams. Because it is a rectangle, it's easier to press quilt tops and backs. The overhang is square to the item I'm pressing. If I need to starch, I put down a pressing cloth, ie. a piece of ooold calico. It doesn't need to be muslin, it can have a pattern!!
Thanks for showing how to get different size blocks together by successive approximations!!! My husband and I use this method in many ways. Even getting to our destination with less than precise directions.
You always start my day with a smile 😊 : )

I wonder if it would work to pin the background onto your design wall first. Then measure and cut your batting to the same size or a bit smaller. Pin that up and then spray baste the quilt top in place. If you would be worried about basting spray hitting the floor you could lay down a couple of beach towels to catch any over spray. It might be less fiddly than dealing with the ironing board. I'm fortunate to have two folding tables touching side by side so I have a fairly large space. I have clamps that I use to clamp everything in place and then I pin baste most quilts unless they are really really small. I use a couple of chopstiks that I tape in place perpendicular to where the two tables meet with painter's tape so I can feel the center. Then I fold each item in quarters to make it easy to find the center. It's brilliant and saves so much time. I got the idea from a gal on RUclips who shows how to sandwich on one small table.ruclips.net/video/jnke_KzeTI8/видео.html

I make sure I have enough backing and batting and trim off the excess after I finish the pinning. I mark my upper left corners with one of my quilt pins. I spray the wadding (batting) with the 505 and the smooth the backing onto that in sections. Then I spray the other side of the wadding and smooth the quilt top onto the wadding, again in sections, letting the weight of it hand over the ironing board. I never spray fabric as I’ve found it can stain. I press with the iron as I go and leave for a while before stitching to allow everything to adhere.

this is how I spray baste, as well... it takes a bit of time, but all in all it works well. After it is spray basted, I run the iron over the backing to make sure it is smooth. And sometimes, the batting may not be exactly on the end... if I notice this after I start quilting, I attach the needed batting before I sew that area.

That’s hard when you can’t see everything…I started doing that when I ran out of backing while I was already quilting…what a hassle that was.

You can wash your wool pressing mat. But it is advised not to put it in the washing machine as wool retains moisture and the vigorous spinning motion by your washer and dryer can distort the shape and form. Also drying time will take longer when the mat is soaked.
If you decide to wash your pressing mat, hand wash it and hang or air dry flat.

i guess i thought i did spray. As you know, this is real life. i have sprayed in several other videos, use my search bar on my youtube channel. There isn't any way for you to 'see' spray. so that will be hard to answer. Best thing is to find someone local so you can stand with them and see their technique, which most likely will be a little different than mine

Nothing sexy about basting. Just focus and precision (as in don't get sloppy). I do mine as often as possible on the rectangular patio table in the yard in nice weather. Sometimes in the fall I will do three quilts in a day getting ready for all that backed up quilting I have to get done in the winter. I never thought of the ironing board as an option. I live in the PNW ( no AC) so quilting is hot work in the summer, so I only piece then. Then I have a backlog of quilts to baste and quilt. When I get bored or sore doing one, I switch to another. Eventually they all get done. :)

  • @manuelashannon1369

Why have the batting larger than the backing. I cut my backing larger so I can see the edges. And I cut the batting about an inch smaller all around. I can align it better. I will try on the ironing board, but use my cutting method. I sew a label by machine to the backing , so I want yo be straight.
