My biggest lie....but I didn't know it was a lie until recently was......"The quilt top looks fabulous, but I am not good enough at the actual quilting part to finish it. And I don't want to mess my quilt top up with quilting that I will be embarrassed of." After I attended my first quilt show and saw my quilting was comparable in quality to many of the quilts in the show, I realized that I had believed a lie for years. Now I have started quilting my unfinished projects and turning my quilt tops into usable quilt. It is surprising what you can gain by appreciating the work other quilters do....and in turn, finding the confidence and encouragement you need to sew on.
Also we tend to compare our quilting to the perfect quilting done by a computerized long-arm. Even the most experienced quilter won’t have that level of perfection! I know I am not a master quilter, but my quilts hold together and are appreciated by the recipient. I’m not quilting for a national show or museum, I’m quilting for people I know and love, or for charity. Besides, I will never get better if I don’t practice!
Oh my goodness! I know this lie so well! Thank you for sharing this. This may be the biggest lie quilters tell themselves. Judging by the likes and the additional comments, I am sure you can see how much this resonated with others. THANK YOU so much for sharing this. You have helped so many, I am sure! ❤️❤️❤️
I also tell those lies. I am 79 yrs old, I'll never get done w/all my UFO's, but here lately I am not caring. If they get done, they get done. i could be sewing/piecing for over 3,000 yrs. and still be at it. I love your videos, and I enjoyed the one w/your son, and I learned a thing or two. It was a fun video. And I love to purchase fabric, while visiting my cousin in MO. last May, I was able to go to 2 quilt shops , one in Nevada, where she lives and the other in Lamar and I got some real nice fabric in 2nd hand stores that we visited, so much fun and so many memories. Thank you for your videos.
Oh, this is wonderful! I love this attitude! I agree--if they get done, great. If they don't, so what? Love it so much! So happy you love my videos! Thank you so much for sharing! This made my day! 🥰
It's a Positive Good Thing to have multiple projects on the go at once. When you lose patience with one, you'll get sloppy if you push on with it and you'll get more impatient and irritated and around and around. If you just put it aside and work on something else until you feel like getting back to it you'll do better work and enjoy it more. Really, it's the right thing to do! No guilt!
I used to be "strict" with myself about 1 project at a time but I discovered the same thing! You are very wise. I have found that sometimes when a quilt just isn't "working" for me--putting it away for a time really helps me to see it with fresh eyes & fix the issue. Good advice.
I think this depends what type of person you are. It stresses me out to have too many on the go. Even if I've made several charity tops and they are neatly lying over my landing bannister it stresses me out to see more than 1 or 2 there. I feel a sense of relief when I've quilted them. So I say do what works for you and don't worry about what others do. The main thing is enjoy what you make and USE them ( which I do) so everyone wins.
This year, I only 3 family members quilts for Christmas. (I just had shoulder surgery so I had an excuse, LOL, plus I have one queen size quilt in progress and a new grandchild on the way.) But I also promised myself that I would use some of my stash this year, like last year, making lap robes, wheelchair lap robes and shawls for my doctor to give out to her homebound and hospice patients (one patient last year was 93, another 108). That brings me joy so it is a private priority. --- As for multiple projects, I have a bookcase in my sewing area that is just for current projects. When I get ready to sew, I pick out whichever project calls to me that day. I know they will all get done eventually because they are all right there in plain sight, and not stuffed away in a closet or bin. No guilt on that one.
"I won't buy anymore fabric", my Daughter is guilty but I only say "I won't buy any today" and stay away from the fabric. Finish before starting another, again not me as I have unfinished welding projects and been collecting for a retirement project and 2 days ago I bought even more material for the next quilt. Yesterday re-started current quilt after 3 weeks not even looking at it. After only about 10 quilts over 5 years I don't have a real lot of scraps. I already told my Daughter she gets my stuff when I'm no longer able so no guilt there. Time for just a little more sewing. :)
I tell myself all these lies. I always love when someone says not to stress over quilting. It's supposed to be fun. I stress over it too much. Are my color choices "right". Are my seams straight. What if someone can see that point isn't exact. There are always so many quilt police.
Yes! So true! These are other "lies" we tell ourselves. Thank you for sharing this. I know it makes me feel I am not alone. I am sure it will do the same for others. ❤️
It totally helped - mostly to give myself some grace and that it’s not just me LOL. Good thing I am a process stitcher. Finishing is for whenever I get around to it but I MUST always be making something.
MetroStitcher- right there with you. And I need to organize all of it, as well as other craft projects that I've seen and bought supplies for. Slowly working on it.
Wow Kris you hit all the nails on the head!!! I tell myself all the time, but I am not going to buy fabric and then I do and yes, I feel guilty! I also feel guilty about being a squirrel and starting something before I finish something else. I have a whole big corner of this lie!! For our Quilt Guild we were told to make ourselves a name tag. I decided to make my background a squirrel. That’s me. I am a squirrel!!! I will never use all the fabric I have, but I keep buying more. Because it makes me happy! I have just decided to be happy. If I don’t get the Quilt done meh then it isn’t done. You’re right. We really don’t have deadlines with most of the things we make. So why take the joy out of it? Great video. It’s nice to know we’re not alone. ❤
Yes, yes, and yes! There is so much negativity that goes with this lies, isn’t there? I am with you-let’s just be happy and enjoy quilting! The guilt is toxic. No need for it. I try to give myself grace and enjoy the process. Some days are easier than others. 😬
I buy more than I need. Thank God I did. Had a good supply when the world shutdown. Then many stores closed not soon after. Quilters are ready for whatever life hands us!
I think we just have to ditch the guilt. It's a hobby - and "we" are the ones who should be making the rules or plan for ourselves - and we can change them. It's okay to change and evolve in what you do. I am positive not every painter only works on one project at a time. Authors often have several ideas simmering at once. We quilters are so hard on ourselves. Love those potholders you showed. Would love to get some of those for Christmas! :) (Not so much table things anymore - as my table is in constant use for fabric.)
YES! Love this! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! WE do need to be easier on ourselves! My parents always tease me about the amount of fabric I have, but they don't seem to tease my husband (a woodworker) about the amount of wood he has. It makes you think about the double standards, doesn't it? I agree--we should be allowed to treat our craft how we decide to treat it. Thank you so much for sharing! As for the projects, I pinned a comment with the playlist! ❤️
What a perfect topic for us quilters! In my 45 yrs. of quilting, I've told myself all of those lies at one time or another. But finally coming to terms with how happy this hobby makes me helped me let go and just enjoy. Still struggle a bit with the guilt but there's nothing wrong with a little guilty pleasure, right? Thank you!
My pleasure! Love this! So true! It has taken me so many years to get over some of these hang ups and I’m still struggling at almost 52 years old and 25+ years of quilting. 😂 Some days are easier than others!
7 out of 7! I chuckled through the whole video. Thank you for setting me free from the guilt, and for letting me see I am not alone. I have all of my quilting sisters and brothers right there with me.
You are so welcome! I am thrilled beyond words that this is helping so many in the quilting community! That's exactly why I made this video. My goal was to help. ❤️ We are in great company! 🥰 Thank you for watching and sharing. ❤️
RE: Lie #3 - I will use up my scraps. The Good Night Irene tutorial proved to be the breakthrough scrap buster for me. Beth, at My Sewing Room, mentioned getting fabric from Marshalls Dry Goods in Arkansas, so I gave it a look. I ended up buying an entire bolt of 120" wide muslin. That made me feel safe. If I messed up, I had plenty of fabric for do overs. I forget if the bolt is 15 yards or 25 yards, but it looks like I haven't touched it yet However, I have "finished" 3 Good Night Irene quilt tops, another scrappy pattern, 35 10 inch string blocks (and counting), and a twin size quilt top of 4" half square triangles. Half square triangles were something scary to me. I would have never tried them without that safety net of a bolt of neutral muslin. That "bolt" has been my safety net so I know I will not run out of fabric. And, now the scraps are being used up. Life is good. PS. I also started the forever project of the Cathedral Quilt quilt. Simply because, if I mess up, I have more muslin for the squares.
I am a fabric curator for my museum of fabric. You cannot tell me otherwise. I have a basic stash now though so now I only purchase fabric I just can't live without or would be perfect for an upcoming project. And I replace the colors/prints I use a lot (e.g., black, white, and sepia tones) I clean up as I go as I find it's easier for me to keep my sewing room tidy doing it that way. Then, after each larger project (a quilt or a more intensive garment) I clean the entire room (dust, put everything away, vacuum, make sure the sewing machine is cleaned too) so it's a "brand new" sewing studio each time. I'm the kind of person that prefers to do only one project at a time - because I pour myself into my sewing projects and am exhausted when one is completed. But if I am doing a larger project that will take some time (like a quilt) I will let myself do other smaller projects at the same time, like a simple bag or an apron. Stick to the plan??? I have rheumatoid arthritis and learned many long times ago sticking to a plan doesn't work. I might have a deadline goal I can't reach due to pain. Or I cut the last piece of a fabric wrong and don't have enough to cut out a replacement so have to substitue a fabric. Or a friend drops over unannounced. Or a winter storm cuts out electricity. Or...or...or...well, you get the gist. I have a saying: Life gets in the way of living.
You are spot on! But besides fabric, I have a habit of buying project patterns. I have bags, table runners, aprons, and of course quilt patterns that I never seem to get to, but have fun looking at. But I think the worst bad habit I have that I am trying really hard to kick is that I tend to point out all my mistakes whenever somebody admires my work. What’s up with that? I also apologize whenever I give somebody a quilt that isn’t “perfect“. Which, of course is every single one. Thank you for putting so succinctly what all quilters deal with daily.
You are so welcome! I am happy it helps! Oh, these are great ones! I also buy a ton of patterns. It is crazy, isn't it? And I also say those negative things to myself about my workmanship, along with pointing out the mistakes. It is like I want to beat others to the punch! 😂 We both need to work on this. Thank you for sharing! I am sure it helped others, too. ❤️
Lie #5 and Lie #6 really hit home. I've discovered that I need multiple projects of different sizes going on at the same time. I need to have a variety to work so I have something that fits my time slot or mojo when I sit down.
I can relate to this so much!!! If that's the way we work best, we need to embrace it, right? ❤️ I am with you--many choices/projects make me happiest.
Thanks for the pep talk. I agree with everything you said.😊 We need to be easier on ourselves about quilting especially if it is a hobby and we do it for pleasure. Life is stressful enough.
You are so welcome! ❤️ Glad I am not alone. 😁 I felt it needed to be addressed, especially this time of year. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves! We need to give ourselves grace and enjoy the process.
Promising yourself to make "a block a day" of one particular quilt", as you know this does not work. But will tell you what does work, at least for me. I sew "every day" at something, usually about 3-4 projects and I am turning out finished projects on regular basis. Fact is you don't feel like working on specific project because I don't feel like cutting all day, or applique all day, sewing at machine all day--just does not work, but what does is work on something daily gets it done. And I enjoy my sewing journey. FINISHED IS BETTER THAN PERFECT!
Great tips! Love it! For me, quilting is my full-time job and because of that, I am at my machines 6-8 hours each day, It is tricky to make projects for myself! LOL! I need to be nicer to myself about this. Thanks for the insight! I appreciate it!
Hi Kris No truer statements. There’s not a quilter out there that hasn’t told these fibs. 😂😂 #8 I’m not going to tell myself anymore lies 😂😂😂🥳🥳🥳. Love your channel
I put the worst guilt trips on myself over not having a project done when I initially said I would and over wanting to start another project when I don't have the first done. I thought it was just me as a new quilter! 😂😅 Thank you for this video letting me know I'm not alone! 😊
My pleasure! I am so happy this video helped you! No, you are not alone, and judging by all of these comments, we are both in very good company! I have been quilting for over 25 years, and I still struggle with most of these. ❤️
Oh, Kris, I’ve told ALL these lies! Good video! And thanks for the permission! I just starched fabric for a quilt for my son-and I bought background fabric, border fabric AND backing fabric for it. In fact, all I had to start with were two jelly rolls. Well, as you say, I’m making a new memory, so who cares that I’m (temporarily) “ditching” my BOM and my new bed quilt for myself. It’s true that things can suddenly inspire you to go in another direction. So I’m going! 😊
LOVE this, especially the part where you say, "things can suddenly inspire you to go in another direction. So I'm going!" This is wonderful! THANK YOU a million times over for sharing this and watching my video. ❤️❤️❤️
The lies we tell ourselves messes with our enthusiasm and creativity. I'm learning to give myself some grace and permission to just go with the flow. 😊
I really love this topic, Kris! We all can benefit from hearing, "it's okay" if you choose to do that--don't feel guilty talk. Quilting truly is not a "one size fits all" process.
Thank you so much! I really felt these things needed to be said. I am hearing them far too often in my guild and with my quilty friends. Glad it is helpful. That's what it's all about about. 🥰
I can relate to all of them. But I’ve put things away for a small season and not quilting for a while. I love it so much I am being convicted for giving it first place in my life. I homeschool my last two kiddos and very involved in church I feel like I don’t have a lot of time for quilting some days. That’s depressing. I am a work in progress. God is absolutely good! Blessings from Texas.
Oh wow. I am so sorry you are giving up what you love, even if it is for a season. I wonder if you can set some time aside to quilt, since you love it so much? I wish I could help, especially since it is making you feel depressed. One of my favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 31: 13. Maybe it will help you, too? Or even adding a quilting minister to your hobby. Just a thought. Love and blessings to you, too. ❤️
I loved this video so much, I've watched it twice! My biggy is number 5. I have finally imbrased the fact that organization is not a one time thing but a continuing process. I am trying very hard to deal with putting everyting away, dealing with the scraps and cleaning at the end of a project. I work so I don't always get to sew every day, so this helps the sewing room stay relativly neat. I do have multiple projects going on, but at least it helps locating things. Thanks again for a great video.
It is my pleasure! I love that you watched it twice! I also love that this has helped you some. Number five is a big one for me, too! It is tough to figure out what works for us, isn't it? Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Wonderful monolog! I'm guilty of all of these things and my additional one is that I know I won't live long enough to use all my fabric! I always have a quilt I'm binding, a quilt I'm piecing, a quilt I'm quilting and a quilt I am cutting out. I can always make progress somewhere!
I have bought too much fabric recently. I know the reason. Lately, it seems like the fabric lines I like have sold out quickly before I have had a chance to buy all the pieces I want. I don’t have a local quilt shop, so I have to order online. I don’t buy precuts, so I like to buy just some of the fabrics to see if I like the line. Then if I decide I want more, the major online shops have sold out, and I’m sent scrambling to buy the other prints from a series of small shops because no one shop has everything I want. I worry that I might not have enough of a print to make a background or border, so I buy a larger amount than I might buy if I knew I could find more later. Does that all make sense? It seems to be a never ending cycle.
Oh my goodness-this makes so much sense! I am starting to believe that is part of the marketing strategy! Companies only do one run on fabric now. It didn’t used to be like that. It is super frustrating. No wonder quilts shops are struggling, too! They can’t keep up with the big guys. I can relate to everything you are saying. It is so tempting! And you don’t want to be searching all over for that one print that is out of stock. Completely understand. ❤️
Thanks for describing your experience because I’m finding it increasingly stressful to shop for fabric. Within a couple of weeks of the release it’s difficult to find a store that has the complete collection. Then it becomes very time consuming and expensive because of shipping charges. I do think it’s a marketing strategy but in the long run people will become frustrated and possibly move onto another hobby.
@@dianelouise3944 It would be a shame to have this fabric frustration drive people away from quilting. I think some of the fabric lines are just too big. Smaller quilt shops can’t afford to carry entire lines. When I had a local quilt shop, I mixed fabrics from various lines. Now that I can’t see the fabrics in person before I buy, I choose from one line so that I know the colors won’t clash.
This is so me! We must be related! LOL! I love it! Maybe that is our hobby--starting new projects! Not a bad hobby, in my opinion! 😂 Thank you for sharing this! I know I can relate, and I am sure others can, too!
Hi Kris. Okay I'm guilty of several of those. However it's my family that calls me out on them: the fabric purchases, not finishing a project before starting a new one, missed deadlines-you get the idea. I know I need to tune them out but with family it's really hard to do. Thanks for the grace! I needed it today. ~~ Lynne
First, you are very welcome, Lynne! I am so happy this helped you. Next, I completely get that! I get grief from my family sometimes, too. I think, at least in my situation, it comes from a good place, but still. I understand! I wonder if they would feel the same way about a chef or an artist or a carpenter. It may be worth asking them. I am sorry you are dealing with that. We are hard on ourselves. The last thing we need are people we love coming down on it. Love to you!
I can relate to ALL the lies. I’ve found I really have to tell myself there is no one putting these pressures on me. I am putting pressure on me to make a wedding quilt for a specific date and I’ve procrastinated all the way to a month before the event to finish. They don’t know I’m doing this, but I’m determined. That’s really the only time I stress about quilting. It’s usually my happy place otherwise.
So happy you could relate! I have been there many times with procrastinating in making quilts! Oh my goodness! This really resonated with me! Thank you for this. ❤️
With regard to the tendency to grow our fabric stash much faster than we can use it, there is also the consideration of how much disposable income the family has. I have to be very careful most of the time not to overspend my income, and so I realized now that I cannot afford much impulse buying. But I do allow myself to buy fabric if I have a specific project in mind or if it will be the perfect thing to help me use part of my stash.
Thanks for covering this topic. I thought I was the only one who did some of these things, or thought some of these thoughts. I feel better knowing I'm in good company!😊
My pleasure! I can't tell you how much I am excited to hear this! It was my goal with this video. I feel like this stuff isn't discussed enough in our community. So happy you can relate!
Oh my goodness you hit the nail on the head! You just listed everything I have been saying for years and struggling with. Thank you for sharing this and the bravery to be honest enough to make us all feel better!! You're the best!
Oh wow! Thank you!!! I felt this video needed to be made because we tend to struggle with this stuff. I want people to know they are not alone. Thank you so much for watching and for your kindness. ❤️
Thank you pointing these out. I miss quilting because I work a lot but also because I told myself I can’t sew another stitch until I get my sewing room organized. It is going very slow. And you are so right about the guilt! I am giving myself a cleaning deadline & once I hit that date, I can going to start quilting whether I am done or not….and thank you for your help in holding up the mirror to myself! You are awesome!
You are so welcome! Wow, I am humbled that this has helped you so much get away from telling yourself you can't sew another stitch until you get your room organized. When I read that sentence, I audibly groaned and felt terrible for you! I also see myself in it. I am better now, but I am so much like this. Love to you! I hope you are back at your machine soon! ❤️
I have a TV in my sewing room and that is my best tool for allowing me to enjoy tidying up. I can watch something fun while doing not so fun chores. This is really a wonderful video tackling many of the guilty aspects for a guilty pleasure.
This is a great video. My Mount Scrapmore is taking over my house. In thinking about it, I’m not ready for crumb quilts so I’m motivated now to donating at least that much to a friend or thrift store. Love your “whatever fits in the bin” idea!
I relate to all the lies. I have at least 12 projects in process. I decided to only start another project when I have an empty bin. I think most quilters are creative and have a need to create more. I can't ever imagine finishing a project before starting another. That would make my quilting life too boring. Love your videos! Keep them coming!
Thank you so much! More to come, I promise! ❤️ I am so much like you! I have so many projects in the works. Great philosophies! I need to be more like this!
Love this video. Thank you for sharing the things you are guilty of when it comes to fabrics, quilting, sewing, etc. I can relate and I'm sure others can as well. ❤😊 Have a wonderful day.
Like you, I like to clean my sewing room before I start for the day. I’m in no mood for cleaning when I’m done sewing and I’m very happy to close the door on any mess I’ve made. But when I walk into the room for my next sewing session I get energized by making it all tidy so I can really enjoy working on my project. If only I felt that way regarding the rest of my home . . .
Hi Kris. You were reading my mind!!! I have one extra guilt issue: I make lots of things for charity, so find myself guilt tripping if I don't sit at the machine for "just another 15 minutes" which turns into an hour. By then, my back is sore, I've overdone the work and the joy is gone. I'm working on this by telling myself that the energy in the project has to be joyful or it has to be put away for now. This has helped me stop while I'm still having a blast to enjoy a cup of tea (and a cookie of course!) Thanks Kris!
You are so welcome! Oh, that’s a great one! Thank you for sharing this! This is something I struggle with, too. We should make things for others with a happy heart-not always the case, right? 😂 This really resonates with me as I sit here drinking a cup of tea. I need a cookie, too! Thanks again for sharing, washing, and commenting. ❤️
"I have a fabric problem". I have a little sign I bought at a quilt shop. My fabric problem is that I don't have enough money to buy all the fabric I want!! But the 7 lies you went through I totally have told myself. Your video helped my so much! I'm gonna go clean my sewing area right now. Well, in an hour .......or so
Yay! I am so happy it is helpful! That’s why I wanted to make this one-to help other quilters with those crazy voices in our heads. ❤️ I love your “fabric problem.” 😂
This is a great video. I’ve written in my quilting journal every month “I’m not buying anymore fabric”. Hasn’t worked once. And I have to be working on more than one project at a time. Else I start hating the project. And I am making a quilt for everyone at church-but I don’t have a timetable. I just know when the time is right. As for scraps, more than once I have put on Facebook “free fabric “ or “can you use these scraps.” I always have takers, strangers are always glad to get the fabric. Many thanks for your insightful video.
Thank you so much for loving this video! This is such great insight! Love the idea of putting "free fabric" on Facebook. What a blessing this is to others, I am sure! A quilt for each member? Wow! Amazing goal! ❤️🥰❤️
You are so welcome! That is exactly why I made this video! I got the idea while on a quilting bus trip. I kept hearing other quilters say some of these things (including myself) and it dawned on me: This is a problem! Glad it is helpful! I really wanted to debunk some of these lies and help quilters. You are in great company, especially judging from these comments. ❤️ Thank you so much for watching and sharing. 🥰
(Jayne) as a fairly new quilter, I have found when a new line of fabric comes out and a pattern, if u don't buy it fairly quickly it maybe sold out when I'm actually ready to start the new quilt and then I'm scrabbling to find all the fabric and ending up spending alot of shipping from a number of shops I had to go to to get it all.
So true! I have had that happen to me more than once. It seems to be getting worse, too. I honestly feel it is partially a marketing strategy to create frenzies around new patterns and new lines of fabric. A great example of this is the pumpkin pattern I show in the video. The pattern works really well with 2.5” strips but the pattern has you making it with a specific layer cake. Unless you really have some experience, it would be difficult to transfer/translate that pattern to use other cuts of fabric. I wish I knew how to help. Just know you aren’t alone, Jayne! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm going to take to heart the "clean before I sew". When I get to myi space.....I just want to sew. But after time, things get crazy. This was a really good video to hear and process.
You are so welcome! I love that it is resonating with so many quilters and am thrilled it is helping so many, like yourself, too! For me, switching to cleaning before is a game-changer. Cleaning up actually motivates me to sew now. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! ❤️
Oh, that's a great one! Especially as I sit here listening to the laundry tumble, telling myself I can't sew until the laundry is not only done drying, but also folded and put away. Hmmmmm. Perfect timing to read this comment! 😂 Thank you for this!
An excellent video, we all have at least some of these in common as quilters. I have all of these but I have solved most of them by saying, "Quilting is not a job, its a hobby, do it at the pace you want, dont work on deadlines. I also tell myself I can judiciously buy what I think I will use, as long as I don't spend myself into financial difficulty. I have several people I want to give quilts to but I have limited myself to one to two gift quilts a year. Everyone knows who is getting a quilt because I work with them to choose designs, etc. And I make them and give them and dont wait for the holidays. It saves myself deadline pressure also. The main problem I still have is keeping neat and tidy. I try to clean after every quilt but before I know it, scraps and strings are everywhere.
I love the fabric that you bought at the Oaks Quilt Show! You purchased it from my local quilt shop and favorite store, Capital Quilts, Gaithersburg, Maryland!
Oh my goodness! I LOVE their booth! I really wanted the winter hat flannel quilt kit, but I didn't get it. I still think about it. 😂 I would love to visit their shop sometime. They were all so friendly and had a wonderful selection. I can't imagine living near them. 😁
I've done pretty well with not buying fabric this year. I didn't swear off completely but buy it as I need it. I don't live near quilt shops so I'm not as tempted. Scraps are my downfall though. I need to part with some of it. Great suggestions!! Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Thanks for this video, Kris. I get support from you in my slightly quirky approach to quilting and other crafts! Trying to keep it fun, trying not to be super critical of my finished products, trying to allow myself to have a Plan B when the first iteration of a project is a flop! I am also a multiple project person. Usually a quilt or two and a knitting thing are ongoing. And sometimes I put something away for months (like the Pumpkin project) if I am not jazzed about it. Often when I look at it again in a few months, I get interested and off I go again to finish it. Anyhow, thank you again for the helpful and supportive video!
You are so welcome! Slightly Quirky is a wonderful way to describe it! That's probably what my parents should have named me. 😂 Thank you for watching and sharing this! It makes me feel like I am not alone and hopefully makes others in our community feel that way, too! ❤️
Thank you for these words of wisdom. My husband has unopened packs of paint, hundreds of pencils and half a dozen blocks of drawing paper. This is not a horde! But my fabric is! I have permission to feel better. ❤👍from Somerset UK
You are so welcome! Glad you could relate! YES! I know what you mean! My husband doesn't really give me a hard time, but others do. My husband is a woodworker and has a ton of wood, but no one says anything to him. If anything, they commend him for having so much. 😂
I haven't been quilting that long but, I so much understand the lies and guilt. I will take your advice and not be so hard on myself. I quilt for my own pleasure not to shame myself. ❤
I have all these!!!!! You hit the nail on the head!!! I have made it through September so far not buying fabric and trying to use stash. I had no clue what I did have until I started digging. I think it’s good to have a no buy week/ month. Thanks for video!!!!
You are so welcome! So happy you like this! We are in good company. Do you listen to the podcast The Inappropriate Quilters? Rochelle, one of the hosts, does a No Spend September. She is so ready for it to be over. LOL! I don't know if I could do it! Thank you for watching and sharing! ❤️
Nice to have company in my issues!!! Hahaha. I quilt alone because no one understands the organized chaos I have created!! I use to quilt all my quilts, now I send them out and I’m loving the freedoms to be more creative with more tops!!!! I have been able to complete 50 quilts so far this year! Just picked up 5 and dropped off 2. Seven more Christmas quilt tops then I’ll start on Christmas/birthday gifts. Love my hobby…. Love my personal time… love my happy mess!
We have a great group of fellow quilting "liars," don't we? 😂😂😂 I love this! This is a great tip! I should do this. Thank you! That last line needs to be put on a t-shirt or a sign. 😂
I've a love-hate with QAL's for that guilt reason. Life happens and i get behind their schedule at some point, and i have to allow myself to be ok with this and not pile on the guilt of "falling behind." Yes i might miss out on some prizes but i can still enjoy the ideas, extra tutorials, and sharing, without being too hard on myself for not following the official schedules.
So many of these i have said at one time or another , but 20 years in to the hobby im getting to know myself and im good with what limits i put on myself now .
wow you hit the nails on their heads with this... so happy to hear I'm not the only one replaying those fibs in my head. I do have trouble not buying more fabric ... dont but one precut get 2 or 3 just in case oh and gotta have same line borders... add a couple yds 😂 I do have to keep my sewing room clean... kitten eats string and little pieces of fabrics which has resulted in multiple emergency surgeries ( ca-ching ca- ching). I tend to clean up before I close the door to keep miss gobble scraps out. I do have a shelf of WIP, a couple of planned with patterns fabrics stored in ziplock bags (thank you dollar general), and a couple of ready to quilt projects again stored in big ziplock bags. took a couple weeks to organize but it works for me. loved you lighthearted presentation... had a good laugh...THANK YOU ❤❤
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching, laughing with me, and sharing. ❤️ Sounds like you have a great handle on these things. That’s so awesome! ❤️
Yep I agree with them all. I used to buy projects and say I'm gonna do that when I retire. Well now I'm retired and too many projects to do. Oh no! Best thing I've done is make myself a monthly list and work from that. What I don't get done it goes on next months list. I love marking stuff off. Then I add those completed projects to 2023 and it makes me feel good to look at projects that I've gotten completed. Thanks for video. Enjoyed!
Ditto, ditto, ditto!!! Especially buying fabric. It’s on sale so that makes it OK even though I already have enough to last a year or two. But of them hit home. I’m a new quilter so it makes me feel better this is just how it is. Thank you
True about fabric and memories, and why I love my scrappy quilts so much. Quilting is emotional - who knew! lol. Years ago I made a scrappy doll quilt for Granddaughter using 1.5 inch squares, since then I save all scraps. ugh! Good video,,, we should try to feel less guilty about all areas of our lives.
So happy you love this video! 🥰 Love that you made your granddaughter a scrappy doll quilt. 🥰 That is so sweet! Quilting is so emotional! I think that's what I love most about it. ❤️
My lie is that I will use already fabric in stash for backing, but I'm very fussy in having the right backing so off I go to my quilt shop, now buy wide backs and find some times I'll make a scrap quilt in colours that suit the backings I have on hand. Do a lot of charity quilts but just feel the backing is just as important as the top and they must complement each other.
Great video. Another lie: I will finish every project I start. - No, some project can just "die" and it's ok. I've learned something and my ideas, skills and mind set have changed.
I love love love you....laughed at myself because truer words were never spoken about me . Thanks for the chuckle and confirmation I'm not alone in my quilting journey.😅
You are so welcome! So happy you love this (and ME! 😂)! This was the main goal of this video--to make other quilters know they are normal in these crazy thoughts we have! 🥰 So happy it helped you!
I cannot start a new project until the on I am on is finished.. so this week I finish a baby quilt n will start a thanksgiving table runner for our daughters long table. It motivates me to not stall a project bc I want to start another one soon.
I wish I were like this! Well, mostly. 😂 It is so wonderful that there are different types of quilters out there! It makes the quilting community even better. Thank you for sharing this! ❤️
One of my retirement goals is to make a quilt for each family member. I send them out as I finish them. This has put a lot of pressure on me because life happens. I have one getting tyed and 3 more to make, then a break to make something for me. I don't let the guilt in though, this is my release.🎉
Oh my goodness! It is my pleasure! 🥰 I am so happy this has helped you, especially as a new quilter! Thank you for watching and sharing. The more people who comment, the more others will know they aren’t alone. ❤️
Hi twin! I thank you for letting the cat out of the bag about my lies. Thanks for all of the suggestions and I am relieved of the guilt and embarrassment. Happy sewing is on the way.
Oh my goodness Kris, I was laughing through this as I am guilty of all of this. You know the lovely scrappy hoop hangings you made. I was totally inspired. I searched Op shops and have four great hoops. I bought some extra little trimmings and then thought about the fabrics I would use. That's as far as I have gotten so far. You have liberated me though about feeling guilty about buying more fabric etc at our up and coming quilt and craft convention in October. I said I wasn't going to buy anything, yes I will, I may as well just admit it now and start my budget! haha. Enjoyed this video.
I love that you are going to make those! They are fun! So happy this video resonated with you, too! I felt these things had to be said, mostly to make others realize they aren't alone. Quilting can be an isolating hobby sometimes! I got your email and will be responding soon! I have SO much to tell you! I love that we are friends! ❤️
One tip for Ufos: the pumpkin quilt will also be great with a pumpkin center out of the finished or started blocks plus a big border. A finished quilt is usable, a box of blocks not so, your original idea knows nobody but you.
I think I am thre president of the support group for everyone of these. I did 6 quilts at on Christmas but I had made some of the tops in previous years. I vowed to quilt them myself and that didn't happen 2 local quilters finished them with the Credit Card method thanks for this video and all you do
I am all too familiar with that credit card method! 😂 Glad you could relate! Being the president of this support group is a great place to be! Judging by these comments alone, we have a wonderful support group! ❤️
I love your happy personality so I am subscribing because you make me smile after a long day after quilting. I agree with all your lies, however #5 I clean my craft after every mess I make, and I make a mess! It’s like coming home from vacation to a torn apart house. No one wants that. So each day I go into a clean organized craft room and it feels so welcoming.
You are so sweet! Thank you for your kind words. 🥰🥰🥰 I’m the type who comes home from vacation to a torn apart house! 😂 But I understand what you are saying. For me, if I didn’t do it before I start sewing, it would rarely get clean. I love that we are all so different! Thanks again for subscribing and being so sweet!
Kris I tell the same lies you do! I just ignore them as lies! I tell myself I am 70 and I should do what I want. Then I think I really need to use what I have because when I die my family doesn't sew or quilt and they won't have anything to do with it. I think I should leave a few names to send my fabric to. Would you like to be one of them? I can put you on my list. I would like to make the list of people that struggle that don't have the money to purchase the new lines that come which is what I buy. Cory Yoder, Sheri and Chelsi, Lori Holt, Camille Ross-Kelly.
Oh, thank you so much! How wonderfully generous of you! I am so glad I am not alone with these lies we tell. It can be tough, can't it? Thank you so much for watching and sharing! ❤️
Your ideas are spot on, we all do things differently and we need to do what works for us. Ummm, I’m a big fan of a double wedding ring quilt, and I L😍VE your friends double wedding ring quilt!!!
Were you? That is awesome! I LOVED it! I went on a bus trip with my guild. We went on the first day. I had so much fun! Those quilts--wow! I can't wait to go back next year. I think we are making it an annual thing. ❤️
Oh my, I am guilty of every one of the quilting lies to myself. I love love what you do. I have been quilting for 40years now and have many many projects going at once. Ha ha ha . Best wishes from down under. Australia 🇦🇺 😊
I check boxes on every item. I al see o have one more. I give myself permission to quit a project that I have come to dread looking at. Life is too short to make myself do something that I loathe. I return the materials to my stash and go on to something else. Occasionally I have restarted the project and AC finished it. Oh, the satisfaction!
LOVE this! YES! I feel the same way about the books I read. I will keep reading a book until page 100. If I still hate it, I don't continue to read it. I need to be better at this rule in my quilting life, too! ❤️
Outside work and life gets in the way. I can set my goals; however, something always gets in the way. So I just keep muddling through the best that I can. I will get to the project(s) done; but, not as quickly as I would like to. That's why I don't want to take in sewing, make repairs, cut, piece, or quilt for someone else. Deadlines upset me and slow me down.
I don’t hoard fabric, I just shop faster than I quilt.😂
😂 Oh my goodness! This is great! I love it!
Love this ❤
This is what I am going to tell my kids. 😁
That would be great as a shirt 😂.
Stealing this!
Good one
My mom gave me the saying “less guilt = more quilts” we have a limited amount of energy, spend what you have thinking about quilts, not about guilt!
OHHHH! I love that! I need to post that about my sewing machine! Thank you for sharing this! ❤️
I agree. 20 yrs of this lie. I would actually apologize for my straight line quilting. Your friend from New Mexico, Carla 🎶💐💖
Go you!!
Done is better than anything!
Happily guilty of all lied! But so what- completed and used is better than perfect but not finished!
Tootie
🥰 So true!
No guilt!
I agree! But sometimes those voices in my head lie to me. 😂 I am a work in progress.
I totally agree!! I like having several projects on the go at once. I like being able to switch between them.
What a wonderful system and ideas! Thank you so much for sharing! I hope your shoulder is better. Happy quilting! ❤️
I tell myself that I not going to buy any more fabric but I always do when I see some I like
That’s a big one for me, but I’m working on it! ❤️
Love it! So happy these systems work for you! I need to be more like this. 🥰
I think we quilters all believe these lies too! LOL! I have never seen a clean and organized quilting room.
So true! We tell ourselves such terrible lies. I hope this video helps others. ❤️
Glad I have some company in all these lies! My problem is that I also crochet, cross stitch and knit so my WIPS quadruple LOL!
I love it! We are in good company! 😂
Wow, you are busy! I hope this video helped you in all of these areas!
Oh KRIS! YOU ARE SOOOOO SPOT ON.❤❤
We are kindred quilting spirits! 😊😎❤️
So true! LOL! When we were even in the toilet paper crisis, I kept telling my husband that I had us covered. 😂
No guilt! I’m Making sure the quilt shops stay open!! And also help the economy with my online shopping😄😄😄😄
Thank you for watching and sharing.
I forget if the bolt is 15 yards or 25 yards, but it looks like I haven't touched it yet
However, I have "finished" 3 Good Night Irene quilt tops, another scrappy pattern, 35 10 inch string blocks (and counting), and a twin size quilt top of 4" half square triangles.
So much great information in this comment! I love this! Thank you SO much for sharing! I also love the you are making a forever project, too! ❤️❤️❤️
I am a fabric curator for my museum of fabric. You cannot tell me otherwise. I have a basic stash now though so now I only purchase fabric I just can't live without or would be perfect for an upcoming project. And I replace the colors/prints I use a lot (e.g., black, white, and sepia tones)
I clean up as I go as I find it's easier for me to keep my sewing room tidy doing it that way.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing you thoughts on these tips! Wonderful insight. ❤️
Oh my goodness. I have said all of these 7 lies especially since I am now retired. Thank you for posting this video it has hit home with me ❤
You are so welcome! Glad I am not alone. 😁
I felt it needed to be addressed, especially this time of year.
Guilting is not a good hobby. Quilting is.
Yes! SO TRUE! Thank you for this! ❤️
Wow, what a great line!
Hi Kris No truer statements. There’s not a quilter out there that hasn’t told these fibs. 😂😂
#8 I’m not going to tell myself anymore lies 😂😂😂🥳🥳🥳. Love your channel
😂 Love #8! Thank you so much! I am glad I am not alone!
Well said!
Love this attitude! So true! Thank you for watching, sharing, and your kind words! 🥰
I think our creative nature is what prevents us from doing only one project at a time. I must have several going at once!
Oh, could be! Love it! That makes me feel better. 😎
@@SewtheDistance I agree. FOMO is real.
I agree! I hope this changes sooner than later. It is super frustrating.
I tend to get highly motivated at starting a new project but then not finish it because I get highly motivated to start a NEW project.
This is so me! We must be related! LOL! I love it! Maybe that is our hobby--starting new projects! Not a bad hobby, in my opinion! 😂
Thank you for sharing this!
Very good point! Thank you! ❤️
Love that! Great idea! Thank you for sharing!
Hello, I just came upon you site on" 7 lies Quilters tell" I can't tell you enough how much your input helped me . thanks so very much!!!
You are so welcome! I am so happy to hear this helped you. That was my goal in making this video. ❤️
This is a great video. My Mount Scrapmore is taking over my house. In thinking about it, I’m not ready for crumb quilts so I’m motivated now to donating at least that much to a friend or thrift store. Love your “whatever fits in the bin” idea!
Thank you so much! I am thrilled this video helped you! ❤️ Scraps can take over a space so quickly!
Guilty of all of the above. So I have to stop telling myself these lies. Thanks for sharing
You are so welcome!
Yes! Although I still tend to tell myself some of these lies, even though I know it shouldn’t. ❤️
I am so much like you! I have so many projects in the works. Great philosophies! I need to be more like this!
Love this video. Thank you for sharing the things you are guilty of when it comes to fabrics, quilting, sewing, etc. I can relate and I'm sure others can as well. ❤😊 Have a wonderful day.
Thank you so much! I feel like it includes many things quilters don’t talk about. I hope it helps others. ❤️
If only I felt that way regarding the rest of my home . . .
That is how I feel, too! YES! Just flipping my thinking helped me so much in this area.
Hmmmm. The rest of the house? Let's not talk about THAT! 😂
I love your “fabric problem.” 😂
@@SewtheDistance 🤓
Thank you. It's great to hear these lies out loud. It has eased some of my guilt knowing I'm in good company!😅
You hit so many of my “lies” that I tell myself. The worst for me would be that I had to do a certain chore before I allow myself to sit down and sew.
Thank you for this! These are all excellent tips for coping with those negative voices in our heads. Love it! ❤️
Great video, Kris. Not to mention - you look gorgeous!
Wow! Thank you! ☺️ You are so sweet! 🥰
I've done pretty well with not buying fabric this year. I didn't swear off completely but buy it as I need it. I don't live near quilt shops so I'm not as tempted. Scraps are my downfall though. I need to part with some of it. Great suggestions!! Thanks for sharing your ideas.
You are so welcome! Glad it is helpful! I need to be more like you with fabric. 😁
Thank you for watching and sharing this!
That's such a wonderful attitude! Thank you for sharing. ❤️
I have organized my Christmas fabrics and why do I have so many? 😂 I didn’t buy any fabric this month
I love this!
So true! Great points! ❤️
So many of these i have said at one time or another , but 20 years in to the hobby im getting to know myself and im good with what limits i put on myself now .
That’s awesome! I’ve been quilting for over 25 years and still struggle. 😬
Whoa!! That wedding ring quilt is stunning!!!
Isn't it? If you are on Instagram, he has more pictures of it there. His user name is JoeInPA.
wow you hit the nails on their heads with this... so happy to hear I'm not the only one replaying those fibs in my head. I do have trouble not buying more fabric ... dont but one precut get 2 or 3 just in case oh and gotta have same line borders... add a couple yds 😂
I do have to keep my sewing room clean... kitten eats string and little pieces of fabrics which has resulted in multiple emergency surgeries ( ca-ching ca- ching).
Enjoyed!
Love, love, LOVE this! Great idea! So happy you enjoyed this! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️
I can relate to all of these. Right now my biggest struggle is with #1 and #7. Thanks for helping us all get these out in the open. ❤
It is my pleasure. ❤️
Those are tough ones! I really struggle with #1, especially. I am so happy it has helped you. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, I do all of these lies to myself. Thanks for the encouragement
My pleasure! I am happy I am not alone, and judging by these comments, we are both in good company. ❤️
Ditto, ditto, ditto!!! Especially buying fabric. It’s on sale so that makes it OK even though I already have enough to last a year or two. But of them hit home. I’m a new quilter so it makes me feel better this is just how it is. Thank you
You are so welcome! I am so happy this made you feel better. ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome to quilting! I am so happy you are part of this amazing community!
Love that you made your granddaughter a scrappy doll quilt.
That's a great "lie." I can relate to this so much! Extra wide backs have been helpful for me, too! Thank you for watching and sharing your ideas!
Gosh this is the first time I have found you and this is a GOOD VIDEO full of freeing truth. Thank you!
Yay! So glad you found me! You are so welcome! ❤️
Great video. Another lie: I will finish every project I start. - No, some project can just "die" and it's ok. I've learned something and my ideas, skills and mind set have changed.
Thank you! ❤️
This is a great one! I completely agree. Sometimes it is just about the experience. Thank you for watching and sharing!
It is so wonderful that there are different types of quilters out there! It makes the quilting community even better. Thank you for sharing this! ❤️
Love, love, love this!
Thank you! I am happy it spoke to you. ❤️
They’re all just so pretty!
Right? Too many pretty things to make! I totally get that! 🥰
OMG Chris! You must have been in my head and extracted all the "lies"! I enjoy your videos.
😂😂😂 Great minds think alike! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! ❤️
One of my retirement goals is to make a quilt for each family member. I send them out as I finish them. This has put a lot of pressure on me because life happens. I have one getting tyed and 3 more to make, then a break to make something for me. I don't let the guilt in though, this is my release.🎉
So glad you don't let it get you down! I love that you are making family members quilts! What a wonderful gift! ❤️
This was great!!! And, as a new quilter, I have told all of these lies and it good to know that I am not the only one. Many thanks.
Oh my goodness! It is my pleasure! 🥰 I am so happy this has helped you, especially as a new quilter! Thank you for watching and sharing. The more people who comment, the more others will know they aren’t alone. ❤️
Great Video Kris❣I clean up before I sew too✅Totally Helps❣
Thank you, Tracy! It’s so interesting how that one flip changed how I view the mess in my room. ❤️
Hi twin! I thank you for letting the cat out of the bag about my lies. Thanks for all of the suggestions and I am relieved of the guilt and embarrassment. Happy sewing is on the way.
Twinsies for Life! 😂 You are so welcome! I am happy this helped you feel less alone and thrilled it has helped you! 🥰
I relate to every one of these! Thank you for this video. It’s nice to know that I am not alone 😊
You're so welcome! I love that it helped you! You are in very good quilting company. 🥰
LOVE THIS ! Thank you, spoke to my guilt and was a perfect encouragement!
Yay! So happy you love it. We are in good company. 💕
@@SewtheDistance I enjoy your friendship.
One tip for Ufos: the pumpkin quilt will also be great with a pumpkin center out of the finished or started blocks plus a big border. A finished quilt is usable, a box of blocks not so, your original idea knows nobody but you.
Great advice! Thank you for this! ❤️
I’m the type who comes home from vacation to a torn apart house! 😂 But I understand what you are saying. For me, if I didn’t do it before I start sewing, it would rarely get clean. I love that we are all so different!
Thanks again for subscribing and being so sweet!
I love and strive for grace, joy and hope....
Such a wonderful way to live. 🥰
Also, I just enjoy my hobby, and I don’t worry about all this stuff.
That's fantastic! ❤️
Thank you so much! ❤️
Isn’t that quilt amazing? All of his quilts are stunning. Super talented.
I was at Oaks quilt show, too. You are the 2nd person I follow who was there. Too bad we didn't get to meet.
You're welcome! So happy you loved this video! ❤️
Austrailia is on my bucket list! It looks beautiful! ❤️
I can completely understand this. Love to you! Going at your own pace is so important. ❤️
