Charlestowne Mall is now closed as of December 1st, 2017. Carson's, Von Maur, Cinema 18, Power Athletics, and Threading And Henna will remain open. Final Night Tour on my other channel: ruclips.net/video/pAFnSOZeaEg/видео.html
I can't believe they closed this and tore down this mail. I lived in Elgin for 21 years and I moved to Rockford, Illinois 11 years ago. I really loved visiting this mall and I remember seeing two movies there at the movie theater. It was a big surprise when I came to this after searching about dead malls to see this is no more.
Looks like an exact replica of my local mall Freehold Raceway Mall before they renovated it and Macerich took it over, this looks like a Wilmorite mall design to me. Quite eerie!! At least my mall isn't dead and is doing better than it ever has since it was renovated!!
This mall was originally built by wilmorite. Freehold raceway was built almost exactly the same as this one. Charlestowne failed because of horrible management as well as other malls opening nearby.
Freehold Raceway Mall, fortunately, hasn't had the issue of bad management that you speak of, even though this mall has intense competition from several malls, such as Monmouth nearby, it has not fell hostage, and has actually continued to grow and grow to a point where it is now the 25th busiest in the nation I believe in terms of foot traffic with 12-13 million visitors annually. This was considered a dead mall when it first opened.
Sure but the good news is there are still plenty of other malls in the Chicago area to go to. The problem with this one is it was too far from an interstate highway.
I grew up about a half hour away from this mall. It was nice, clean and active mall back in the day. I was in there recently and it was slightly spooky in there. It was the theater, one of the anchors( I'm not sure which one) and a place that did 3d printing and that's it. And the 3d printer place was staffed with a man who I think was the owner and I felt so so so sorry for him.
There was a Carson Pirie Scott downtown in Decatur, Illinois when I was growing up in the Sixties: haven't heard the name in a long time. I think that that one closed in the Seventies and eventually the building was demolished. At least there's a downtown. How many malls will vanish leaving nothing recognizable?
From my first visit in 2013 where there were still a few stores open this was really depressing. This mall will become demolished like lakehurst soon sadly.
Elevators +More Do you know why there are no photos of the mall from when the mall was busy in the 90s and early 00's? I know that the mall security is known for being very strict. Also, will most of the mall get taken down or will it be just the section between where the 2 new walls are?
I show the plan for the mall at 14:35, That plan has a chance for change. I don't know why there ar'nt many photos of the mall online. My guess is that people didn't think to photograph it back then. Then if anybody tried they would get yelled at by security, since it was more hard to be incognito.
That's pretty interesting and not bad to keep some of the stores and the cinema that's doing pretty well but tear down the rest of the mall and make it into Apartments I think that's a good idea
I think so as well. Driving by on the weekends the two anchors and the Movie Theater fill up the parking lot enough to make the mall look moderately busy.
Elevators +More yeah because the only think one is the cinema. The other part of the mall I’d cut off. 😞 I remember going with my mom when I was like 6 years old. My dad has a picture of him and us and the mall was full.

Elevators +More It’s sad I wold have loved to go thare
But the real question is, will Gumball Gourmet remain open??
Quinn F lets hope it stays open
I miss this mall so much. It was so nice when it was in its prime. My mom worked there and I had a lot of good times.
I used to work in Charlestown Mall, at the Carsons before it closed down. Seeing all those huge empty spaces is a bit sad :(
Beautiful and unique mall, such a sad tale of malls disappearing all over the globe
Actually, it's similar to Woodfield. The same company, Wilmorite, developed both.
Pretty mall. Too bad it closed. Thanks for filming.

They actually have not demolished it (yet). But the interior has been collecting dust since the end of 2017

That's Awesome!!!
I remember when I was little and I used to go here all the time. Is it still open somehow?
It closed. Von Maur and theater are still open though.
Yeah can u still walk in the mall even tho it is closed? Sorry I'm asking so many questions.
@@lesliebustamante777 You cant walk through the mall anymore. It closed December 1st, 2017.
Sad, just sad.
It is

@@dvferyance It wasn't very convenient to get to, no matter where you were coming from. It was more like "Little Mall on the Prairie".
Do we know wen thay are taking it down it is sad and I wish that we could get parts from 5+elvators the main Kohl’s seres mabe Evan 10 elvators lost
I was surprised to the escalators were running in front of that empty anchor
H.H. foxaddict its because it is right next to the movie theater. In center court there is the elevator also Von Maur
what is the song at the begging i kind of like it
I was here a few months back, I really need to give it another walk-through while it's still in one piece.

I hope the renovation/plan is worth it, it is sad though to see the condition the mall is in now :(
I do too!
Music is too loud can’t hear him

This is just so sad. I grew up in St. Charles. I would go here every other day. Then it started slowly dieing.. One store after another.
Looks even more deserted and blocked off than when I visited in Aug 2016. Slowly continuing it's journey to become like Lakehurst mall.
From my first visit in 2013 where there were still a few stores open this was really depressing. This mall will become demolished like lakehurst soon sadly.
The saddest part? When a mall lists a gumball machine as a dining option.
What else is there though?
Maybe, we will call it Assaffield Court
What will happen to the former Kohl's space? By the way did the former sears there have an elevator? RIP Charlestowne Mall. 1991-2017
The former kohl's will become apartments. Sears did have an elevator, I don't think anybody filmed it though.

No Clue.

When will it be demolished?
I've heard in about 6 months the other day from msj191961

It's probably a good bet the Carson's will get torn down since the plan was released before the Bon Ton liquidation.

No, I have heard that it will probably be in 2018.

Will the interior of the mall look the same or be renovated?
It will be the same in the section that remains in front of classic cinemas. The rest is getting demolished to become apartments.
Will the remaining part between the movie theater and Von Maur get filled with new stores?
carsons is closing i bet it will get torn down to
Does anyone have any quarters for the gumball machine?
A TOUR OF EMPTINESS AND EXTINCT IS SHOPPERS where did they all go?
Maybe we should this mall Ghost towne Mall.
I live here
