Hey Josh, I really liked that you empathized something that most reviewers about the I360 & Gopro don't talk about.... software and workflow on a PC. Most of those guys are Mac users and have nothing but praise for the Hero 8 or Max. What they don't mention is how nightmarish working with the H8 & Max on a PC can be. I am like you where I do 95% of my editing on my computer. Great review, keep up the good work, dude!

The H8 sounds pesky, but not as much of a headache. From what I've researched about the H8, the majority of the complaints for PC users has been that it can't be recognized when first connecting it to a computer and one has to go to the Task Manager to uninstall from there, then unplug and re-plug for Windows to recognize it. Or I've read that just using another cable other than the one GoPro supplies will work better. Have these issues been solved by now, or is still the case? I don't own any of the cameras Josh mentioned and trying to narrow it down to the One R or the H8. The Max is definitely out of the question.
@@maximusolybrius4612 99% of the time I just plug my SD card into my PC directly and don't use the gopro to do it at all...maybe that's why I have no issues. But the times I do use the gopro directly into my PC I've had 0 issues with it. I also don't use the standard usb c cable they provided me because I have higher quality cables anyway...shrugs. It works great for me though, never have any issues with it

I ordered it mainly because of the modularity. I can imagine scratching a lens and replacing the mod is much easier and cheaper than replacing the camera.
I like how 360 footage let you choose camera angles during video edits. I might have gone a bit extreme in this edit of me in a fullscale aerobatic glider. Do not buy Insta360 One R BEFORE checking out ALL the fogging issues! I brought one and got the fogging issue straight away, then found out many more users are getting the same issue. Personally I would stay right away, but the choice is yours! BTW the sealed bag and supplied silica sachets DID NOT WORK FOR ME! Camera has been returned! PS, what annoys me is, every youtube reviewer raves about the insta360 One R but NONE say about the fogging issue which is plaguing the product!
I can only speak to issues I had with the camera. I didn't have this issue. The issues only began to be posted about on the Internet around May, 2020, so it's not even like it was all over the Internet at the time this review was released.
Still amazed at the lack of windows support for the MAX. I ended up buying an iPad to edit with it. Works well with the gopro app, but quite expensive. Plus still no dive case 9 months after release. Insta has all kinds of mods for theirs already.
I use a Max with a iPad Pro and find I get no dropped frames with fast 360 rendering, something even powerful computers struggle with. However, you made a good choice, I had a one r and got lens fogging from day, tried to fix it following their instructions but no go, returned it and brought a GoPro Max, so much happier, feels and works like a quality product should, way better than the cheap toy feel of the one r
Okay, I have ordered a GoPro Max recently before watching this video. I do some hobbyist 3d modeling and scenes. I would use still images or stationary video as the environment. So like it would be a room wrapping around a toy on a desk or maybe some metal balls reflecting the background or a reflective car sitting in a garage. I would like some spherical projection maps of just anything to see the quality of a map that wraps around seamlessly. If you have some images from both cameras, could you post a link? I was looking and looking on GoPro's website for the PC editing software and couldn't find what I needed. Your right on the 'not everyone uses a Mac' comment. Even though the interface is better on the Max, I prefer the flexibility in editing that the One R offers. This is a really great review! One minor note is the 5.7k resolution is the total once both cameras are stitched, it's not 5.7k x2. I've been doing some side-by-side tests with the Hero 8 and the One R myself and having a hard time picking my favourite!

So glad you focused on the workflow pros and cons. Grateful I never bought the GoPro Max now. I have both GoPro 9 with lens mod, and the Insta 360 one r with 4K mod, and 1" mod. I'm sold now on completing the Insta360 one R Trifecta..lol
I don't know... ONE R I hear so many problems of lens fogging. I also cant handle the super distracting red dot that the lens produces with sunlight. The MAX can become a regular GO PRO with just pushing a button is called the "hero mode" and not having to take it out of the case and switch. The red dot in the ONE R is just a deal breaker for me. I do need to take the camera to the ocean a lot and MAX is better for that. I haven't bought neither but Ive been researching for a long time what the best one for me is.
The Max can become a regular gopro but it lacks all the great features of the Hero 8 (although locked horizon is pretty good). Also, I have had problems with footage from the Max switching randomly from front to back camera, making it impossible to use the footage. In the end, I keep turning to the ONE R when I need a 360 cam.
Joshua Bardwell when you switch to the back camera do you mean on HERO mode? Cause the hero mode only works with one camera you wouldn’t be able to switch. I got no issue with that. But the ONE R fogging and the red dot on the footage makes the quality look so cheap i feel. Its just s deal breaker for me. Really having a hard time deciding but the go pro feels is more for professional use. Im waiting for the 9 to come out then i will see what happens.
I hate RUclips auto resolution. Spent the whole video thinking this camera looks like crap. Double-Checked resolution and of course it had auto-set to 480 for the hundredth time in a row.

You also get very very high points that you didn't use any cliches like "cinematic "or" it's a way to tell the story "my pet peeve which makes my skin crawl for years when people used those expressions. I love this cam, but it has severe issues handling vibrations. It's horrible on a motorcycle to the point, where the cam just crashes everytime you go over 50kph. It works decent on a quad though and I never had any issues with the 360 mod on 5 and 7 inch, but the 4k mod always crashed, when saving the recorded flights. THREE TIMES IN A ROW. Kudos to Insta360 though, the last updates fixed a lot of problems, so I still have hopes.
Hello.. I tried to mount GoPro Max on my HGLRC 35 veyron and it seems so heavy and the quad flying so loud. Then my full battery at no time getting low, I got low battery warning on OSD. Should I keep using it and flying it with GoPro Max like this or do you have any suggestion?

I still take Insta360 One X over either of these 2 cameras, same quality as One R except the stitch line doesn't ruin the flying quad footage because the lenses are much closer to each other.
I currently have a Hero8 and am looking to add a 360 camera for some cool looking "B-Roll" and random other shots that 360 cams can produce. If I have Powerdirector (editing software) which would make a better 360 camera GoPro Max or Insta360 One R?
Am I the only man in world who thinks gopro max image quality is much better than insta one R. I think the main use of thesse kind of cameras is to reframe and create a regular video. From my point of view , and I could thy both, Max gives you a better final results. In the other hand, i totally disagree about the app. Insta360 gives a lot of features that Max doesn’t. After using the Insta360 One X for a year now, I'd say the most powerful aspect of it isn't the gimmick shots, it is being able to reorient shots in post, allowing further creative control. My PC sucks, and I think that insta360 really nailed it with their app, you can very easily do everything on your phone with most free video editing apps. Gopro's phone apps are inferior and super frustrating and were the reason I dumped my Session5.
Great video, informative, but I’m still wondering wether to get the insta or max. I’ll wanna use it playing ice hockey, including playing goalie, so I’m wondering which one is more durable. Like if I take a stick or puck to it, which one will survive better? Or do they both have some kind of protective case u can put on them for rugged activities?
What about the condensation and the overheating in the Insta360? And the stupidly over-priced 1-inch add-on that isn't any better than a GoPro? I like the idea of 360 video, but the footage always looks so shitty, to me.

Damn it Joshua, you are gonna make me go out and buy one lol I do have 360 now but Samsung fubared us on the app so it is unusable for a app basicly , email I got back basicly said we don't care . It's a giant pain to take the videos off the camera , put them on the pc just to edit them and some are in the 7gb range who has time for that these days , then prosessing to make it 360 takes almost 24 hours to do 7 videos . I do not have a slow pc , if prosessing was done via the camera this would not be such a big deal . I do love gopro but I'm leaning towards insta360 .
I've watched dozens of videos trying to conclude whether I should get a gopro or the insta360 one r for fpv.. And this vid ended the conundrum for me. Insta360 one r it is.
Insta360 does isnv files so that you can change it in post and the app gives more options, like turning on and off flowstate. Gopro makes you do those things in camera before recording.

How would the 360 be for motorcycle use is there an external mic available to get the camera mic shielded from the wind. Not doing commentary so maybe some tape over the mic to stop the wind. I like simple to use was going to look at the gopro but now I need to check this out first

Painful... I'm currently waiting for a mate f722se since I ditched the quad in the sea... But in your case I think you can order any fc but you need to consider if you need power distribution or not. I think the H7 extreme has power distribution.
Josh, question... off topic. That is a really nice property you're living at . Can you tell us what state its in? Or what coast you're on or near? It kinda reminds me of parts of Oregon, (I live in Seattle), and then again the barn and fence make me think of upstate New York, (where the family farm was and Mom's side of my family still calls home). Loved the video! Just got one further question: you said the gopro max locks some decisions at the time of shooting and you’re stuck with it during the editing. But if you get the footage to premiere pro, do you get the ability to change it or is still locked? Basically what I’m asking is: for a professional filmmaker with experience in premiere pro, is the insta360 workflow still more appropriate? Thanks a lot!
The decision that gets locked is whether to use stabilization. Or you can elect to shoot in action cam mode instead of 360 cam. These changes can't be modified after the footage is shot.
That's a bummer you don't have a Best Buy affiliate link. Any cam I get will be purchased through BB so I can make use of the warranty (unless that's no longer a thing, but it appears to be a thing).
Best Buy affiliate pays 0.5% for any sale of a new customer and 0% after that. It's a totally worthless program to be honest. By comparison other programs pay 3-6% of any affiliated sale.
The insta360 during quad flights kept the quad a few inches in front of camera in focus, however the flight scenery (the ground, trees etc) were out of focus and blurry. In comparison the Gopro maintained crisper video quality with less blur to the flight scene imagery. I dont care what the quad looks like its the flight scene that needs to be in focus
You definitely should make sure you're watching in 1440 resolution before you draw a conclusion like this. RUclips bitrate is affecting these results but there's not much else you can do.
Ok, you lost me with the drone doing spins and loops but the walk and talk allowed me to really compare footage. This review is excellent but you might want to skip the footage that would give someone seizures. Besides that, you have earned a subscriber because this was really good.
Great comparison, I was about to get the go pro but simply because of the extended workflow I might just take the 360.

I still take Insta360 One X over either of these 2 cameras, same quality as One R except the stitch line doesn't ruin the flying quad footage because the lenses are much closer to each other.
I currently have a Hero8 and am looking to add a 360 camera for some cool looking "B-Roll" and random other shots that 360 cams can produce. If I have Powerdirector (editing software) which would make a better 360 camera GoPro Max or Insta360 One R?

Am I the only man in world who thinks gopro max image quality is much better than insta one R.
I think the main use of thesse kind of cameras is to reframe and create a regular video. From my point of view , and I could thy both, Max gives you a better final results.
In the other hand, i totally disagree about the app. Insta360 gives a lot of features that Max doesn’t. The last one, jump cut
After using the Insta360 One X for a year now, I'd say the most powerful aspect of it isn't the gimmick shots, it is being able to reorient shots in post, allowing further creative control. My PC sucks, and I think that insta360 really nailed it with their app, you can very easily do everything on your phone with most free video editing apps. Gopro's phone apps are inferior and super frustrating and were the reason I dumped my Session5.
Great video, informative, but I’m still wondering wether to get the insta or max. I’ll wanna use it playing ice hockey, including playing goalie, so I’m wondering which one is more durable. Like if I take a stick or puck to it, which one will survive better? Or do they both have some kind of protective case u can put on them for rugged activities?
What about the condensation and the overheating in the Insta360? And the stupidly over-priced 1-inch add-on that isn't any better than a GoPro? I like the idea of 360 video, but the footage always looks so shitty, to me.

Btw Insta360 One R looks like much better experience for 360 footage... But Gopro is still the king of traditional action cams

Damn it Joshua, you are gonna make me go out and buy one lol I do have 360 now but Samsung fubared us on the app so it is unusable for a app basicly , email I got back basicly said we don't care .
It's a giant pain to take the videos off the camera , put them on the pc just to edit them and some are in the 7gb range who has time for that these days , then prosessing to make it 360 takes almost 24 hours to do 7 videos . I do not have a slow pc , if prosessing was done via the camera this would not be such a big deal . I do love gopro but I'm leaning towards insta360 .

I've watched dozens of videos trying to conclude whether I should get a gopro or the insta360 one r for fpv.. And this vid ended the conundrum for me. Insta360 one r it is.
Insta360 does isnv files so that you can change it in post and the app gives more options, like turning on and off flowstate. Gopro makes you do those things in camera before recording.

How would the 360 be for motorcycle use is there an external mic available to get the camera mic shielded from the wind. Not doing commentary so maybe some tape over the mic to stop the wind. I like simple to use was going to look at the gopro but now I need to check this out first

The only cameras that work with the DJI FPV system are the DJI FPV cameras. HD cams don't work as FPV cams anyway because they have too much latency.

I have received everything except the SP Racing H7 EXTREME. I ordered it almost 2 months ago. I really want to get in the air. Do you know anyone that has this part locally or is there a different part you can recommend to replace that part that is local and I can purchase and get it here quickly? Painful... I'm currently waiting for a mate f722se since I ditched the quad in the sea... But in your case I think you can order any fc but you need to consider if you need power distribution or not. I think the H7 extreme has power distribution.

Josh, question... off topic. That is a really nice property you're living at . Can you tell us what state its in? Or what coast you're on or near? It kinda reminds me of parts of Oregon, (I live in Seattle), and then again the barn and fence make me think of upstate New York, (where the family farm was and Mom's side of my family still calls home). Often times I watch your videos just to see the country side. Always like it when you punch it and give us that birds eye view. And the cherry tree in bloom .. nice. Just got one further question: you said the gopro max locks some decisions at the time of shooting and you’re stuck with it during the editing. But if you get the footage to premiere pro, do you get the ability to change it or is still locked?
Basically what I’m asking is: for a professional filmmaker with experience in premiere pro, is the insta360 workflow still more appropriate?

The decision that gets locked is whether to use stabilization. Or you can elect to shoot in action cam mode instead of 360 cam. These changes can't be modified after the footage is shot.
I like the balance lead handing out on the bottom of the quad in the beginning, I wonder whats it's thinking?

That's a bummer you don't have a Best Buy affiliate link. Any cam I get will be purchased through BB so I can make use of the warranty (unless that's no longer a thing, but it appears to be a thing).
Best Buy affiliate pays 0.5% for any sale of a new customer and 0% after that. It's a totally worthless program to be honest. By comparison other programs pay 3-6% of any affiliated sale.
whats the best quality 360/action camera?
The insta360 during quad flights kept the quad a few inches in front of camera in focus, however the flight scenery (the ground, trees etc) were out of focus and blurry. In comparison the Gopro maintained crisper video quality with less blur to the flight scene imagery. I dont care what the quad looks like its the flight scene that needs to be in focus
You definitely should make sure you're watching in 1440 resolution before you draw a conclusion like this. RUclips bitrate is affecting these results but there's not much else you can do.

Ok, you lost me with the drone doing spins and loops but the walk and talk allowed me to really compare footage. This review is excellent but you might want to skip the footage that would give someone seizures. Besides that, you have earned a subscriber because this was really good.
