Lots of companies still make these as well. There are currently two companies who supply sirens to Fire Emergency NZ (formerly NZ Fire Service). The first is PSL Fire & Safety and the second is Carrell Electrade.
And you said that you looked over to the siren and it went off 10 seconds later as if to say "Hey, Alex! You want to see the fire trucks? Let me call them out! WHIRRRRRRRRR!!!"
The roof over the siren is not to keep the rain off, it's there to try and keep the noise down at ground level where it will be most effective for the firefighters to hear.
UPDATE: This siren has been replaced with a brand new one (same design), and is now mounted on a pole: www.nzherald.co.nz/resizer/eDKQ6CA1IVyDVMMrEiTDvVHRb-E=/1440x1920/smart/filters:quality(70)/cloudfront-ap-southeast-2.images.arcpublishing.com/nzme/BWXFMDRL3FXMQGOQLBFGX3PXYE.jpg This was done due to the demolition of the training tower that the old siren was mounted on, due to it being deemed unsafe.
What I find interesting about this siren is that it's fire call-out is programmed similarly to the attack alert that was used to signal an air raid during World War II
A live down on the same street as a fire station and every night I hear the sirens of the truck go off. What has Australia come to where everyone decides to have an emergency.
Yes, it was quite easy on this one, as it didn't have any wire mesh on it (which they now fit to these to prevent birds from getting in them). The new siren that replaced this one has the wire mesh on. www.nzherald.co.nz/resizer/eDKQ6CA1IVyDVMMrEiTDvVHRb-E=/1440x1920/smart/filters:quality(70)/cloudfront-ap-southeast-2.images.arcpublishing.com/nzme/BWXFMDRL3FXMQGOQLBFGX3PXYE.jpg

Wow that was great timing. What use to get me when i was a younger lad and use to stay with my Grand Mother (Who in those days lived in Levin), Was the fact this siren sounds more than twice. I kept thinking it was some other warning like civil defense, But now i'm guessing that's because someone has to turn it off once they arrive at the station??
@J.T.E Rail Productions - yes, the siren is usually 'canceled' by whoever arrives at the station first. Given that it may take someone a couple of minutes to arrive, the siren can potentially sound 4, 5, 6 or more times in that period. All of the volunteer fire crew have pagers which are also activated, so the siren is just one means of alerting them.

PSL and Carrel Electrade currently make this type of siren for NZ. This one was made by Carrel Electrade. Other types of siren can be found though. There was a company in Wellington called "Tactical Tooling", but their website has been taken down, so I presume they went bust. Tawa has a Fire Station, and it has a siren (was replaced in 2018). There are no Car Washes in Tawa - the nearest ones are located in Porirua to the North, or Johnsonville to the South. I'd recommend going onto Google maps, finding Tawa and typing in "Car Wash", and have an explore for yourself.
