This shutter is something GM adds on to fix a cold weather problem. along with a shield over the charge air cooler (intercooler) Then they add insulation over the turbo control valve. Cold weather still causes problems. You should be driving one of these when it's -40 and half way into your 45 minute commute at 5 in the morning on a deserted road, and the engine goes into "limp" mode. about 7 times the dealer has remedied this by cleaning out (or replacing) the CAC and turbo control valve. Last time wasn't warranty but they snuck it through somehow. Anyone know of a real fix for this? I'm tempted to change the air filter housing so it draws air from under the hood instead of outside. If it makes this winter it's gone, somebody else will be driving this crap next winter.

It’s funny because Firestone and the dealership want me to get a whole new replacement grill shutter because I took it in for because my engine light is coming on and off and the diagnostic says it’s the grill shutter. The Malibu car I got it in 2020 brand new and now in 2024 it has less then 95,000 miles on it. And I never got the grill cleaned before. So I’m skeptical if I should just try the cleaning and see if that helps preventing the engine light coming on
Yes, the video will be similar for your Malibu. Yes!!! Try cleaning it out yourself before paying someone. Heck, you can do all the work yourself. More than likely, it just needs a good cleaning. The active air grille shutters really don’t do anything to begin with. They contribute to a vehicles’s aerodynamics and fuel economy less than 1%. Even, I would rock the car with the engine light on. Hi Ryan, thank you for your comment. Sounds like a defective part that may need to be replaced. This shouldn't be happening with this new of a car. I'm wondering if there could be something in the way like a rock or pebble that is preventing them from shutting or if there is a split in one of the wires. You'd have to do a little investigating. That’s very odd. I’ve done this several times with no codes popping up afterwards. Hopefully someone can chime in. Do you have a scanner to see what the code is reading?

Yes. An active grille shutter only provides just a smidge of improved gas mileage. It’s unnoticeable. But when the car does have that active grille shutter working plus all the other tech and design elements working in unison to improve gas mileage that’s when it’s noticeable. So having one thing, your active grille shutter not working or present, won’t be a noticeable gain or increase in MPG. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting!
@@wagonworks803 thanks for the response that makes perfect sense.. I ended up being able to pry the shutters out one by one without removing the front bumper. This saved me $1400 that was quoted by the dealer to replace the system which had malfunctioned and got stuck in the closed position..the car is running much better now.

You’d have to hook up a scan tool to it. A scan tool would be able to tell if this system is working correctly or not.

I’d call it an upper air baffle or upper rad cover, upper radiator baffle cover. Something along those lines. Let me know if that helps!

What year is your equinox?
Part number should be 84766744. Make sure it fits your model year and trim level before looking it up and buying it
