I told my daughter about this channel. I want her to feel the Pride, and know of the history of her world. Good good work. Love it. Love to you all, no matter who you love 🏳️🌈
I still am not able to watch a lot of videos about gay history. I came out right around the time of Stonewall and got coerced into a year of 'aversion therapy.' I still live with that horror 50 years later.
I've never understood why it was against the law to be homosexual. If a man and a woman publicly show their affection of one another, why the hell can't two men, or two women? That's never made sense to me.
Nanale I know. Even when I was growing up, you saw more heterosexual (male/female) couples getting married than homosexual (male/male) or lesbian (female/female) getting married.
It's hopeful that young people have the interest to study how the LGBT had to fight for respect and still have to in many places. Perhaps openness in the straight community can help get rid of residual prejudices.
I'm 29 and straight and want nothing but the best for yalls community. Things are going in the right direction generally. Y'all came a long way. I live in SF now and will go to my first pride this weekend. Stay up!
The tragedy of all this is the history of the number of suicides in the gay community. Get arrested in a gay bar in the 1960’s especially the early part - you worked for the city - your photo gets published in the newspaper - your boss sees it - fires you - blackballed how long does it take the average person to become so despondent to consider the unthinkable? And it doesn’t matter that you’re a 6’5” tall, blond, blue eyed handsome man. You can’t get work. You can’t support yourself.
This is so beautiful! Kudos to the youth for respecting gay/lesbian/transgender activists from the 60s/70s who went through the most unbelievable shyt because of how bigoted and homophobic society was. I've always wanted to see a documentary like this and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really like when the younger generation reaches back to the older generation because there is so much valuable information that NEEDS to be heard by today's youth and society in general! Thank you so much! ❤
I am 21 now, even though I was born 20+ years later after Stonewall I can imagine what it could have been like to be gay and live like one back then and it is always so interesting to hear these stories from people who were active then. They laid the path for the modern LGBT movement. And years from now, those guys will be remembered with more and more gratitude, respect and admiration as time goes by.
I have so much respect for our lgtb forefathers. I want to thank your generations on behalf of my own. We would have nothing without the progress you have made.
Well done, and I came out in the 1950s. And 20 years later I came out nationally and at that time, it still was not fashionable to do so,even in San Francisco!
There was the old guys who went to war in the 1940s, born in the 1920s when there had been more space for gays, met each other in the military, realizing they weren’t the only ones, then after the war stayed together, providing a base for surviving or progressing in the 1950s and gays emerging in the 1960s.
If Judy Garland had not have died just a few days prior to Stonewall, she would have used her "star power" and ripped the NYC cops to shreds. She will always be our "Best Judy".
This is an important reminder about the fact that we do need to maintain a sense of pride and community. We've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go and we can't let the partial acceptance that we've found allow us to be lax.
@@melissaadami3144 Oh melissa! I hate to bust your bubble, but we've been here since the beginning of time, it's just that "society" doesn't except us because of fear of the unknown. Did you know that there is a big percentage of gay people in the medical field? What would you do if you needed 911 desperately and a gay EMY, cop, or fire fighter showed up to help you? We are just like straight people. I'm sorry that you feel that way and hopefully one day you won't be so mad, hateful. Have a great day! 🙂
@Suicidal Vet You "supposed" straight people have more of a hang up with gay people having sex than anybody I know! Good god!! 🤦♀️ Is THAT thee ONLY thing you think of when you talk about the LGBTQ community? I hate to bust your sheltered, porn driven bubble, but straight people do the same stuff that you commented on, it's not only a gay thing. Y'all need to find a library to catch up on your health and sexuality classes! BTW, you are very good add descriptive writing? Is that from first hand experience??🤷♀️
This wonderful series has brought up an important point for me. I am cis straight and a passionate ally with a pan daughter and lots of gay and lesbian friends. I have never been to Pride. I wanted to go this year but didn't have anyone to go with and felt weird showing up as just a single cis straight woman. I realize I deprecate my place as "just an ally." This has shown me how important allies are. We need all the voices. Kind of like women only got the vote because men voted for it. We certainly couldn't. Only 10% of the population tends to be LGBTQ+. That is a LOT of people but not a very high percentage. I will find a better way to show respect and space for my LGBTQ+ friends.
Beautiful documentary......this should be taught in class as part of the American History. Sadly, our nation will never be well adjusted enough about being a human. Old history, has proven that money talks and being different is a threat. Well, maybe another 50 years will allow us to be a true United States.....Again..a very powerful bit if storytelling......Thanks!!
Thegayhistoryguy+ Im gay out and proud So glad i found your channel I knew about gay pioneers Read a lot about them Happy to be a new subscriber Love your stuff on this channel Thank you
We all owe so much to the countless people who stood up and in many cases lost their lives, were beaten, raped and destroyed by the status quo. One of the saddest thing is all the folks who kill themselves, and let the b*stards win. Don't give up on this life.
They tried to kick me out of the University, but the group unhappy about me did not know they were complaining to closeted men. Gay men could not go to medical school
This is an remarkable documentary. It would be wonderful to see this properly closed captioned. The automatic captions on RUclips are a disaster (try them), and the LGBT community has less access to positive images of the LGBT community than do hearing people. Captioning your documentary would demonstrate inclusion, and would make this important documentary available to a broader audience (more than 25 million people have a hearing loss in the US alone). Email me with any questions.
Arthur -- I would love to speak with you about broadcasting out video. PLEASE forgive me for waiting so long. I do not monitor this site. We have been working on COMING OUT IN THE 1970s
after hearing such inspiring stories from the sixties I can hardly understand why LGBT comunities are getting SO SOFT nowadays? I mean just go and get your equal rights and marriage!
I hope everyone didn't forget that we still have a lot to fight for! equal marriage is still illegal in several states including mine. Ohio. I have a transgender friend who doesn't have the same rights I do as a heterosexual male. He deserves the right to love anyone he wants to. I don't understand how we let people force their religious ideology on other people who may or may not share the the same beliefs.
well we need to feel obligated to "come out" because we're the minority... and people still don't understand.. i hope in the future (20-30 years from now) people can ask you without people getting offended.
Very cool and good video. I couldn't but help notice the white guy who interviewed the white guy.He got some hairy legs!! There is still a huge movement right today that still hasn't been won today. And that is Basic Civil rights.

Jason Carpp Because of heteronormativity basically I mean heterosexuality is shown like everywhere and taught to be "the norm"damn it sucks

This issue is really Confusing because in some Nations holding hands between men and men is seen as a bad thing.
Women to women is also seen as bad,
It is quite possible The Mossad is Spying on me.
@@jamesbedukodjograham5508 I don't get why it's against the law anywhere for a same-sex couple to show affection.
