We haven't covered Xu in a while, but he's still going strong. His RUclips channel is in the description and endcards. Also, upon reflection, I realize maybe I should just translate this entire event or at least more of the debate about the rules. If I do so, I'll put the extra content on Fight Commentary Extras. Make sure to subscribe to that channel. I remember a part before the match where Xu also explained that they already agreed on the rules and had it in writing. That sounds like a good part to translate and put on Fight Commentary Extras as an accompanying piece. Stay tuned!

Traditional martial artists are ALWAYS shrieking about: "the reason nobody uses our martial art in 'sport fighting' is because there are too many rules! Our martial art was created to fight without rules, where anything goes!"
And the moment you challenge them to a fight, they keep trying to impose crippling rules that prevent the other side from doing any techniques on them.

Ignoring the fact that some professional fighters do implement traditional martial arts in their training.
It's more the fact that these "masters" spent their life lazing around and scamming instead of putting in the hard work, so at best, they are mildly trained in the basics...at worst...well, they get annihilated in a matter of seconds.

The only issue I have with this is that there were a heap of rules put in place in this bout. Who's to say which side they benefited? I would prefer that both sides agree to no rules bouts. Maybe 1 rule - No killing or permanent maiming (Like gouging out the eyes for example). Then no one could complain about being artificially suppressed.

Kung fu practitioners have honestly allowed their humility to become prideful. I really believe that there are great techniques in many kung fu styles, but there's no excuse for neglecting sparring in this day and age. Clinging to the past, to tradition, to an environment that's easy to cultivate respect and never get challenged. The whole mentality of training is just wrong. Go find a 20 something kung fu expert, they don't exist, because somewhere along the line, people thought it made sense for it to take students 10 - 20 years before they had any competence at all, and even then they don't spar.

But I was thinking about all the "Kung Fu", "Silat", and so on, type of guys who showed up with fancy outfits and exotic bowing and scraping, mimicking David Carradine on TV, I guess. It was embarassing. These guys weren't really experts in "Tai Chi", "Kung Fu", "Silat", etc., and they did a lot to harm the reputations of those styles. Same with the bozos who claim to be "Tai Chi Masters" and fight Xu Xiaodong ("Xiaodong" means "Little Dong"). So all the know-nothings jump on various forums and talk about how Xu Xiaodong has "exposed" Taijiquan. SMH.

If you fight in the streets there are no agreements, and you ain't going to do s*** with Tai chi in the street you going to get your ass kicked, with a fighter who trains in boxing and wrestling or just a straight up boxer or a straight up wrestler. Never mind putting in other styles of kicking and kneeing like Muay Thai. This is why we have the MMA it's been proven that none of those styles work, you have to have a complete style That's why the Gracie's beat everybody in the UFC, Kung Fu guys karate guys boxers, even a sumo wrestler. And now MMA so complete that you need the full spectrum, of the blended arts called MMA.

I like that this channel finds cool footage. I’m a little confused by all these challenges and supposed split between “traditional” cma and “new”. One of many examples would be Chen village folks. They fight in kickboxing and other types of tournaments a lot. And do well.
This Taiji guy just didn’t realize what he was dealing with cuz he’s gotten older and fatter but not more humble. He may be good at push hands in his bracket but they don’t go for the legs as far as I know and usually don’t even snap the back of the neck down. And he may have never crosstrained. I’m 45 and do some Taiji and Bagua and sometimes boxing and mma and Muay Thai. But I more focus on going slow because that’s what my body type needs.
I have read that back in the day Bagua guys usually also did wrestling. That’s good and I know lots of guys that are missing that element in their practice.
The younger guy looks to have a good amount of wresting. And IMO wrestling has the toughest conditioning. So trying to wrestle a wrestler is usually gonna lead to a good humbling lesson. These guys are just all up in their feelings.

I practiced Tae Kwon Do for 7 years, i can safely say there are no wrestling style moves, or really any grappling at all. Most of it looks really cool, but is not practical in an actual fight, basics and conditioning do help but if i were to go against a BJJ guy or a good wrestler he'd tear me apart. Once you get grabbed its like "ok welp, meh kicks are useless now"

this "master" probably have outpushed all his students and most other hobbist martial artists that he met, and probably developed certain attributes to win over those who are weaker, slower and less skilled. before Xu's student he has never faced that level of pressure and speed, couldn't follow the pace of the wrestler.
Let's say he can probably outpush 80% of those who never trained, but all it does is boost his ego, make him a big infant so he can't accept failure. Sadly many traditional artists- or most Chinese- were not properly educated about failure.

Chi as used in chinese and Ki as used in japanese translates roughly to "breath". it has nothing to do with projecting or focusing some magical energy that can do incredible things. as far as i know, every or almost every martial arts style teaches some kind of breathing technique to help with not running out of gas in a fight. this also involves increasing lung capacity through extended exercises that require more lung capacity and lung control than most people have.
