Time for some fun! Here we take our Porsche Taycan 4s 93kwh on track against the Tesla Model 3 Performance.
We can see which is faster.
    Which is more fun
How are Pirelli tyres on the new Uberturbine wheels compared to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s from the previous 20” wheels.
How is the Taycan which is fitted with 21inch wheels, air suspension and 4 wheel steering (but no PDCC - Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control )
    How is charging?
How many laps can you do before battery is too low.
This is all at Thruxton Circuit which is the UKs fastest track and we see over 140mph on one of these cars!
And just have some fun before driving these road cars back home again!
If you want to really take track days seriously you can look up some of the specialist modifications available from companies such as our friends at TEVO !

100% agree. The very FIRST thing I upgraded on the M3P were the sway bars; didn’t like the way the car flopped around at speed in corners. $500 and a stupid simple install and the car holds absolutely firm in the corners at any speed. The stock Performance should get thicker sways from the factory! The rest of the suspension is pretty much on point for those of us not wanting to go to coilovers. Glad to see the brakes held up! Pads was gonna be my next move lol

And the Tesla warranty? When you start to modify be prepared to take huge economical risks. Taycan needs no modification, it is a real Porsche and when you once drive it you know why it cannot be compared in reality to any Tesla. By the way based on that Japan EV race Tesla needed to replace Sway Bar set, Camber arms, Brake lines, Coilovers, spring arms, trailing arms. traction arms, breakes itself fully! and still some 10 other smaller points. Having racing background myself, I would never race and drive daily with the same car. Not knowing, but can imagine that after those mods Tesla is not daily driven pleasure any more. Taycan was from the stock...

The true capabilities of both cars on the race track can be seen in the 2021 All Japan EV-GP Series. The Taycan has top speed but lacks battery life leading to power loss. But the Model 3 was better at keeping power up until the end of the race and overtaking The Taycan after lap 3.

The results seem right. I've got a 2021 Model 3 Performance and my buddy has a Taycan 4S. I think my M3P squirts around more rapidly, but the two gears of the taycan would help on a high-speed track like this and the air suspension is miles ahead of the Telsa. But of course a porsche is a porsche.

      @AllanSustainabilityFan 2 года назад +7

      Yep, here's a good example:
      ruclips.net/video/Qs6LcEO9tyg/видео.html
Professional drivers in various EVs on the track, notice the top 5 spots are Model 3s, then Taycan at 6th place.
For some reason the Taycan throttles its power after a few laps, it seems to be optimized for doing the Nürburgring, going past that and it appears that something is overheating due to the weight of the vehicle, but it takes some time for that to build up.
The channel shows this happening multiple times if you go through the race videos as the Taycan driver tries different things to get a handle on the problem.
The Model 3, on the other hand, seems quite capable as an endurance EV, it performs at consistent levels all the way, and is nimble enough to keep tailing the Taycan until it tires.
Kinda like how a nimble cheetah relentlessly chases its heavier prey and pushes it to exhaustion before the pounce.
TLDR: Some fairly affordable upgrades are quite worth the investment if someone wants to make the Model 3 a nimble full-time track champ without breaking the bank.

when you buy the Porsche you not only buy the physical car, but what the extra money spent (for better or worse) buys is the "intangible" in regards to VW's deep knowledge of racing and how to set up a car to perform at the limit. one doesn't build 16 cylinder Bugattis, set records at both Nurburgring and Pikes Peak (ref the ID.R), and dominate Lemans LMP-1 for years (both Audi and Porsche) WITHOUT learning a few things that they can then apply to the cars they build (ie, 911). were almost 70 years into the Information Age and 50 years into Internet Age, so viewed in this context it should surprise no one that DATA itself has "value".

I've been watching Porsche racing at LeMans ect since i was a kid, i would expect no less then excellent track performance for such a race experienced brand, especially for the money. But i got to give credit to Tesla's team, with no racing experiance and on their first try they hang very well with a Tycan, Bravo Tesla.
All they need is to analyze Porsche's suspension and track setup and imitate it, then iterate, no point reinventing the wheel, and if you wanna learn might as well learn from the best.

    • @knroo-j1487

Fair point. Personally, I think the Tesla (or other brands) engineers are capable of producing better track cars, but they also know these are primarily street-driven. Porsche has a customer base that likes more track-purposed tuning, and so their cars arrive like that from the factory. I remember for years, when people said Toyota/Lexus couldn't build fun cars, then they came out with the LFA. They always knew how, but it's a very niche demographic of people who actually buy cars like this AND track them.

Besides all the excuses made for the M3P being slower - 'it's half the price' (actually where I live it isn't half the price, it's considerably more than that) you can't judge a car just by watching a video, that's ludicrous. The way the chassis feels, the controls, the quality of the interior and body and paint, all these things are very important tangibles which affect the ownership experience.
You can pretend those things don't matter, but obviously in the real world they do. Mind you, the Porsche is too expensive for many folks to buy, I get that, but don't try to make it seem like it isn't the better car.
