Love how you always compare budget lenses and abit more pricey lenses to show us the differences. You provide sufficient reasons to purchase the budget ones which will probably comfort those who are on the budget side(like me) Awesome job! Hope to see more of these reviews!
I love the 60. Had it for years. I've been using it for macro this weekend with a couple of cheapo extension tubes. I'm getting amazing results. Super sharp.
I do have a flickr account. Scott_Williams_Photo. The middle spider pic where it is facing front is taken with the 60mm and a couple of cheapo Neewer extension tubes. There are also a few more images in there taken with the 60mm. I do recommend the 60mm for the money, but if I had to choose it would be the 56mm 1.4. It is such a lovely lens.
I just love this line of Sigma f2.8 lenses (19mm, 30mm, 60mm). Maybe AF is not as good as Sigma's f1.4 series, but the f2.8 line bang for a buck ratio is incredible and the best thing is how sharp they are, in terms of optics these are brilliant.
Fascinating review. My memory is that the Sigma 2.8 series (60mm, 30mm,19mm) only had phase detection in the center spot, otherwise using contract detection, which is probably why eye autofocus struggles intermittently (although it's possible that those lenses behave better with the latest Sony APSC bodies). If you "focus and recompose" you can boost the hit rate but that diminishes the utility of eye autofocus.
After your videos, I could not resist to buy both the 30mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.4 for the Sony A6300. Thank you, they were REALLY worth it :) Sharp images, fast AF and nice and compact.
@@HantuBorneo Hi, I can totally recommend the contemporary line for eye af. You need to activate AF-C and bind the eye-af feature on a User Button (like C1 or C2). Tested on the 56mm, should also work on the 30mm just like that.
Go for 16mm 1.4 first. It is more practical for many situation. Otherwise if you love making portrait then go for 56 f1.4. Edit: Didn't notice you already bought all :D
Looks like the 60mm f2.8 has more global contrast and the 56mm f1.4 has more micro contrast (sharpness). Focus looks way better on the 56mm and I like the bokeh on it a bit more. The only thing going for the 60mm f2.8 is price to performance ratio (it is unbeatable) and I like the background compression more vs the wider 56mm lens. So for portraits and low light 56mm all the way and for landscape both are going to be great!
Thanks to your video, definitely don't see a need to spend $200 more on the 56mm. Plus, manual focus may be preferred for some. Thank you for the research and work needed to put it together!
I too have the 60mm lens, and the difference between it and the kit lens was amazing. One thing to note however is that on my A5100, you can only make use of the very centre phase detect autofocus points. You are restricted to just 5 of the 179. Since the autofocus is on the camera's sensor, I have no idea why this is. Maybe it's crippled by Sony? So pretty much the autofocus of this lens has to be of the contrast variety, and AF-C is not really useful.
I'd be happy with either of these 😊 I'm still building my E-mount collection. I'm torn between the Sigma 16mm and the 30mm at the moment. It's nice to have options! I just wish there were more stabilized lenses in this price range!
Sigma's discontinuation of the 60 mm f/2.8 is a tragedy. I have owned one for about 3 years and it is one of the very best lenses I own. It is light, and super sharp, and inexpensive. I hope very much that Sigma is only withdrawing it to soon bring out an updated version with improved autofocus. In the mean time, if you own a Sony APS-C camera - rush out and buy one! By the way, thanks too for a video that is useful for still photo photographers. You recent videos have been very much videocentric and I was thinking of abandoning my subscription. Cheers
Just bought the Sigma 60mm 2.8 from a shop. It arrived today and there is something inside (like a glass component) that moves when tilted. It happens on and off the camera, but doesn't when the camera is turned on. Is this the way it should be? And then I watched the video and got the answer. Thanks
The Sigma f/2.8 APS-C lenses (19, 30 and 60mm) use electromagnetic focusing elements. When they are not attached to a camera that is powered on, the elements move freely (hence the noise when you tilt them), but there is no danger to them moving freely unless you throw or drop the lens (in which case, you’re more in danger of scratching or breaking the glass elements or denting the body or front filter threads). These lenses will not give you the bokeh, low light capabilities or fast autofocus of their newer f/1.4 counterparts, but their small size, common filter thread size (46mm) and affordability (won’t hurt your wallet as much if you damage or lose them) make them a nice alternative. But the Viltrox lenses (like the 75mm f/1.2) are a new contender in the APS-C lens arena. And Sirui will be launching their own line of f/1.2 lenses in 23, 33 and 56mm. So lots of choices including the Sony OEM lenses!
Hi Arthur, i have a6400 and a kit lens 18-135. I need a good portrait lens for both indoor and outdoor. My budget is 500$ or below. My main usage would be still photography. Since the Sigma lenses are all without stabilastion how good are they when you shoot moving objects on the a6000 when you shoot the 11pictures/second? Can you get decent results with that?
TBH, the Sigma @ f1.4 vs the 2.8 shot of your wife at 6.00 was somewhat of an unfair comparison simply because the background (the trees) were distantly behind that you couldn't tell the bokeh difference between the two lens. Maybe if the objects in the background weren't that far behind, it would have been a fairer side by side
how do they perform in terms of distortion ( I mean it should not be a dealbreaker at 85mm) ? As the 60mm is an art lens it should perform better right?
Love how you always compare budget lenses and abit more pricey lenses to show us the differences. You provide sufficient reasons to purchase the budget ones which will probably comfort those who are on the budget side(like me) Awesome job! Hope to see more of these reviews!
Fun fact : while photographers look for lenses to see the face in great detail, the selfie generation uses smooth skin filters to hide face details 😀
people have been relying on softness in lenses and filters for years and years so there is no need to slander the younger generation.

The A6400 has better autofocus and video and the Sigma lenses are tack sharp. You might sacrifice a little bokeh but for almost $4000 you'll be getting a very capable portrait and 4k video system.
Samyang 85 vs Sony 85 1.8

Где цветок?
well dont know 60 2.8 is that good before

so its just a waste paying more than double $ for 56
The 60mm is macro lens, and it should be for different purpose.
The Sigma 60mm is not a macro lens. Both the 60mm and the 56mm have a minimum focus distance of 0.5 meters and x0.14 magnification.
