listening to this was very interesting. my mother is 91. she is young in every aspect of her life, but always was very young looking and had beautiful skin and nothing going on with regard to arthritis and diabetes and heart disease. we were raised on whole foods, so 90 percent of our diets was home cooked whole foods - and my mother never ate fried foods - never went 'low fat', never stopped eating animal products and ignored the heart foundation low fat dogma. in her eyes, nature tells us our food supply is what god provided, animals, plants, seafood and eggs milk etc in their natural form. We didn't have cereals growing up we had a real whole food breakfast, including eggs and fish and so on. never had juice or cordials or soda drinks, raised on milk and water. Point being, her dietary patter overall was (in the context of not drinking and smoking), real whole food, shop around the supermarket, make your own food, and she cooked in lard, butter, dripping and ghee, with animal products, vegetables, fruits, beans etc. She did make a few cakes now and then but never bought any. she grew all her greens as they were the biggest pesticide crops (leafy greens) for decades. Anyway overall, she didn't have food addictions, ate within her energy requirements, walked daily kept active and drank about six million cups of tea or coffee in her lifetime, but never a Coke, never been through a drive through, never eaten chips, never bought a packet of biscuits from the shop. She today, has nothing wrong with her, on no medications, and still driving. Alzheimer's runs in our family so if she gets it now, she's had 90 good years! Oh yeah she's been on HRT for 60 years since surgical menopause. She's still whacking on the patches.
I was working in general practice (allied health) when those headlines came out regarding the womens health study, luckily I was able to look deeply into the study as I can read a paper and am qualified in analysing statistics. the headlines were touting percentage of risk increase, but it was obvious that the women in the study has more mammograms, and that breast cancer takes longer than the study to appear - and also that they were putting people already with risk factors on HRT - however women who had been on HRT for years already were at no higher risk of clots or anything. I encouraged my mother to stay on it and she signed a stat dec with her doctor that she understood the risks and was able to stay on it.

My mother is 96 and still sharp. She has the standard conditions that are controlled by medication; diabetes, high BP. She smoked until she was 50, eats tons of fat/sugar and doesn't exercise. Her mother lived to 95. I never saw either one of them run or do any cardio...lol. After observing older friends and family it seems clear that genetics with medication management is the key to a longer life span. The ones who are vigilant don't seem to live longer or better. In fact those that were fitness fanatics in their prime years are now dealing with knee and hip replacement as well as some nasty complications.
