I'm about to turn 30 and start my 1st day as an apprentice. I've bounced around many careers since I got out of the.military, I dont care about hours or pay, I just want to feel useful and that I accomplished something rewarding at the end of the day. I hate when I go home and feel like I've wasted another day at a dead end job
@@abe_linc02 Its been good, the company im with does service and commercial so I get the best of both worlds, the commercial work is rate work so the money is really nice for an apprentice! So far it's been worth it and im at the point where I can do small side jobs(replacing oil tanks) recharge systems, clean dryer exhaust, duct work, coil replacement..
The best advice I can give to anyone considering an hvac apprenticeship: 1-Don’t bother with a technical institute, its a complete waste of money, just go straight to a contractor and apply for an apprenticeship position. 2-invest in tools, you dont need to show up as the Snap-On guy, but at least have basic hand tools. 3-Keep your mouth shut, and your ears open. Currently, the industry is hurting for good employees that show up on time, put out quality work, and don’t constantly call out of work. Dont just settle with your journeymans license, go for your contractors license, OSHA-10, 30, EPA-Universal, Aerial lift certification, get shop experience, residential, commercial, and industrial experience, and invest in yourself. Become an “A” mechanic, take pride in your work, do things once, do it right, do it by the book, and stay away from “hacks”. The best advice I was ever given: “You can’t soar like an eagle when you surround yourself with turkeys.” True story. 🇺🇸
@@jaybrick8973 Contractors aren't looking for rocket scientists, doesn't make sense to waste money and time with a technical institute when you can just go start your apprenticeship right out of high school, completely skipping the over priced tuition, as well as wasting the time.
I had my first official day with my HVAC company! I love it so far! Anyone that’s nervous, relax! Do what you have to do and take your time but be efficient! Don’t know something ask, double check! Good luck everyone! Remember positivity is key!

I actually live in Sacramento my self north highlands area. I have been really wanting to get into HVAC. 24 years old want to start young and very hardworking. I did military and epoxy as my main jobs through my years. Epoxy we great this became a problem in winter months slowed down really really really slow and couldn’t afford to work there really. I am happy and appreciate this video even if it’s 4 years old, for when I do land the hvac job. Have a good day dude 🤟🏼
Great tips my friend! Just finished my first week of my hvac apprenticeship, and man especially the first day I was making love, nursing it, then become the go get it guy. Now I finally feel confident in my work so I can work on my speed and not get side tracked
I’ve been in the healthcare field for 4 years as a certified nursing assistant/technician while working at a hospital. I thought of furthering my career, but I’ve come to the realization that it isn’t for me. I came across HVAC because I would like to work in a field that’s hands-on and not a desk job. It also sounds very rewarding, and I'm willing to learn. However, I’m not really confident I'll succeed because I'm not much of a handyman and have very little knowledge of tools.
My first day on the job as an apprentice was very different. I work for the family business so I had been exposed to hvac for most of my life and had been working as a labourer for 8 months already. So my first day as an apprentice we are tasked with building a still chiller for a distillery with much higher operating temperatures than you’d use in a traditional air conditioning. At that point I learnt that this industry will forever throw you curve balls, and you’ll never know what to expect.
Been doing service, maintenance and installs for 6 years at a small residential/ light commercial company. Jumping into Ingersoll Rand/Trane next week for commercial service. Very excited.
Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏽 Came across this video. I put in my resignation at my current job yesterday to go into the HVAC industry. I’m excited and scared at the same time (being green as grass lol) This video kinda calmed me down. I start on the 18th of this month.
Don't sugar coat it. 1st day as an installer you will be dirty and gritty and sweaty/cold/wet and bewildered and basically clueless that you're slow as a snail until 2-8 weeks later when you've been trained up to 5 % of what you will be learning in the next 12 months (if you're smart enough and have the work ethic). If you study and have the work ethic $25hr is not unreasonable in 3-4 months.
Great video Greg! It’s very similar to how I started HVAC when I switched careers. It’s been 6 months now and I love it. Great video I’m a 17 yr old kid who is seriously looking into the HVAC trade
It's great. Not hard at all😁 good luck
this is most graded video i needed to watched just now. got an apprentice job in an HVAC academy , but still having that furious and timid mind of how to start. i needed this courage , so im getting right away, to start soon, thanks to FOX FAMILY, FOR THE COURAGE and mind blowing courageous few words
Starting my first day of hvac tomorrow at 19
Update: it’s going great I like it so far besides my 6foot self having to maneuver through tight spaces filled with rat poop sometimes but overall it’s a great learning experience I can use for the future
Loser Hooligan how was the first day, I guess I’m just nervous about not knowing a lot even though it’s an apprenticeship. I just don’t want to make an ass out of myself.
Yea don’t worry expect to make a lot of mistakes man no ones perfect on there first day I was definitely nervous as well but I’m getting the hang of it a little

Im 17 as of august and tomorrow is my first day as an havc installer I have already had 4 months on the job training but im still not truly confident of doing alot of things on my own there really is alot to learn in this trade but im loving it and plan on sticking to it and going to school for my epa certification
I started college for Hvac right out of high school company took me in with 3 months left of school they said they’ll train me until I was done with school worked on a lot of combos so I had someone looking over me making sure I did things right I’ve been lead installing for the past year and I’m 20 years old now
Im 30 and looking for my first HVAC job as entry level apprentice. Ive always loved working hands on. Anything in my home that broke ive fixed on my own from plumbing, furnace water heater swamp cooler and appliances ive fixed them all on my own. I think i have almost every tool for the job except electrician grade tools and maybe HVAC specific specialty tools. I just wish i would have started doing this career out of highschool.
Nice!
Good vid bro, I’ve banged my head on uni struts, stitches in my hand, burned myself with nubrite and I gotta admit that I still wake up every morning exited to go to work
Great video after I work on stores supermarket for about 15 years I just star working on hvac … I’m feel really good 👍🏼
Me too, how’s it going?
This is literally how my first day went, one week in and this video helped so much!
June first is my first day. I have a few years of demo under my belt...4 years as a mechanical technician on a diesel assembly line for industrial Air compressors. This company im going to be working for in newburg oregon really seems like they take great care of their employees...they are paying 100% of my schooling...its online so thats very nice...while i get hands on training on the job. I feel really blessed with this opportunity and really hope i can be successful in this field.
Finished my first mo. As a apprentice/helper and also was in school, school isn’t needed but a plus.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Heck yeah!
I'm 18 in hvac school now im 2 months in an im loving it this summer ill be done
I got 2 weeks left and I already passed the Core Section, Type 1 and 3. All that's left is the Type 2 and I'm set on getting my EPA Universal.
@@joscar062 awesome man when you mean core are talking about NATE I'm trying to get that before I finish school
I waited 12 years to get certified by NATE, if you are gonna be calling yourself NATE certified tech you will also need the experience to back it up. That’s my opinion.
@@JohnHVACR I hear you on that if anything I'll take a NATE work ready exam I'm also staying extra to time so instead of leaving summer I'm leaving December
BASS _MAN101 good for you my friend, my advice for you will be to always do the job the right way no matter if it takes longer than expected, you’ll gain speed along the way. Invest in tools as well, using the right tools makes the job go smoother. Good luck.
Now I finally feel confident in my work so I can work on my speed and not get side tracked
i’m about 3 months way from getting my certificate and getting an hvac job. i’ve been nervous since i started but this video helped a lot.
Thank you very much sir for this helpful info! About to start my new apprenticeship in a couple weeks so I’m beyond excited!!
Loved the video! Today was my first day at college , taking the HVAC class.
Congrats bro... Been doing HVAC since 2013. Awesome trade with a huge sense of pride!
that's great. I hope you like it!
Getting my HVAC certification done this fall and my EPA universal. Starting work next January. Can't wait. I love this trade.
Good luck man!
i start my 1st year program next month for HVAC, is there any advice to get myself prepared mentally for the upcoming semesters?
Monday will be my first day and you taught me alot already! Im super nervous cant lie but this video is awesome bud
Ramiro Mayen what is the pay system for hvac installer I know it’s not hourly
any updates? how is things goin
You are very easy to listen to and learn from, thank you!
Wow, thanks so much!
Great video brother. Reminds me of my first days on the job. Everyday is a school dayin the HVAC field.
$18 to start for me. Hopefully I get the job.
@@DaltonPepple where?
Agreed. He explains it at 8:22
Wow, i got paid 7.50 an hour for installs,
...the attics were the worst
This guy said here in maryland its 18 as starter and you could buy your first house once your 22
Great video Greg! It’s very similar to how I started HVAC when I switched careers. It’s been 6 months now and I love it. You really did a great job articulating exactly how I feel about being in this field! Thanks and keep up the great work. Sincerely, HVAC install helper (working in El Dorado Hills).
Very cool Gene! Maybe we'll run into each other!
@@foxfamilyheatingandaircond4696 It would definitely be great to meet you in person Greg I have been watching your video's even before I started doing HVAC! Thank you for being so helpful to the HVAC community! It's cool to see your FOX Family vans once in a while:)
I’m in Redding recovering from dual
Foot and ankle surgery but plan to go to HVAC school. Looking forward to working and learning in the field
I’m 27 and I want to learn this trade, only thing that somewhat scares me is that I’ve never been a handy man, any advice? I’ll be going to school for it soon, I’m excited to learn something new and I can honestly see myself do great in this
How old were you when you started doing this? I got my license at 34, procrastinated, and now I’m 41 about to start.
I remember my first day working for Air Technology. It was a house in Gold River.
Thanks for the video! Says alot of your character to want to provide encouragement to others. I'll subscribe for sure. Going this spring for HVAC in Las Vegas NV! God bless you and your family...and business as well!!!
Went to school for plumbing. Not my thing. HVAC was my first ever introduction to trades. So far it looks awesome. Any recommendations? I have a small child and a busy spouse at home. Looking for a great trade!
17 going to school for hvac certificate. tbh jus cant wait to get this shmoney
Ogin Same here but I realized we won’t get that money until we bring value and knowledge to others
Congrats man hope you made it
Lmao i got my g3 and certificate but covid fked the graduate recruitment program. So as of now every employer requires g2 and years of experience 😂😂😂😂. Im hoping to get connects with like 2 places rn but shits fucked. they made it sound like they hire people endlessly
@@TheRolly11 I got hired at an Hvac company in a training position until I turn 18, gives me a year to get my masters. Where around do you live? I was hired in the middle of covid in kansas, might be easier in different states.
@@emilya3552 Ontario, Canada. I managed to get connects with a place that specialize in sheet metal but i still need to get a higher level driver license and a car. so in the mean time im saving for that and they got me on the back burner now.
I'm 36. I started with my current company as an apprentice installer in January of this year being paid 14/hr. Since then I have been moved or "promoted" as my boss said to service. To date I have received a $4 increase to my hourly, a take home van and endless potential. The money and possibilities are very real in the trades. I wish I would have got into this industry earlier.
I'm 24, start tomorrow in hvacr with no experience at all, and I make 17.50. you need to ask for a raise, or switch to a company that pays you more.
@citricdemon Whats your job title?
@@PIndyJones something lower than a technician apprentice. installing, like you. No service work yet. Actually I think 20$ is considered "entry level" now

Just got my adult apprenticeship at 26 so keen to learn watched a few your videos your awesome bro
Adult apprenticeship?? As in how to adult like an adult?
I hear those can be brutal. Mine lasted 18 years
Great video brother! Really summed up my first day almost 6yrs ago. Keep it up! Support from NC
I’m brand new into installing and the hvac trade in whole and I died laughing about the thermostat part because that is me
Thank you for your videos and thanks for your timing
How long did it take for you to grasp entire residential maintenance stuff I'm also looking to get into this field
Make the trades great again!
I wish I would have watched this before my first day, a year in now and we’re pumping out full system before clock out time.
Do you always work with teams ? Or sometimes solo.
Tonight could be taught in the time of tomorrow honestly more exciting thinking of your last day on the job as a HVAC tech

I'm going tomorrow with a family friend who owns his own hvac company super nervous and don't know anything about it wish me luck
Great bud bud! I’m keen to get started.
When did you start?
Ive been working for this company for 3 days now, they say in 3 weeks i get my own truck. Im excited but nervous. What should i expect on my first day by myself?
I took electricial in boces in highschool and I want to do an HVAC apprenticeship, will I be clueless? In class we learned services changes pipe bending how to install outlets lights and lace walls.
Thanks you're a good mentoring
Thank you. I am Universal certified. But I am changing careers from a cool. Ughh. Here we go. I want to retire an Hvac technician.
I've been a bartender for seven years and am thinking of doing this trade
Thank you for making this video.
I've been a sheetmetal worker for 5yrs and I'm looking to move into HVAC and this was helpful.
However I will add...if u think sitting down for more than 30min for lunch is lazy...don't ever get a gov job. 😅
I want to work independently but i dont have the courage to do it from scratch.
Really wish I had an hvac apprentice position.
I'm starting my first hvac job as a install helper like I know stuff about heating and cooling like ik how to braze soft solder and charging and recovering and recycling and wiring I don't want to come off as a new guy that thinks he knows it all how would you suggest that I can let the tech know that i know what I'm doing I've done change outs at my trade school
Or do you think the tech might ask about the stuff
Thank you for this video I'm 21 and start next Thursday for a company where they teach and show me at the same time I haven't gone to school for this but do have some knowledge about copper wire since I used to work with movie production boxes any do's and don't advice? Really want to make it in this field I'm just ready to soak everything up
You'd be a great guy to work for.
We certainly try to take care of our own! Thx👍
I'm 18 two days from my first day can't wait
Going for an apprenticeship interview tomorrow:) I'm sure I'm going to be fine as I'm an army infantry veteran and wildland firefighter, so I've got the hustle down....and about the messing around, I can swing it too as I've been in construction before, so I've heard or sent a lot of people for non existing samples or tools 😂 any other tips you dint mention in the video to help me stand out?
Other of 2 and married just trying to provide so looking to make a solid statement:) thank you in advance!
Thinking about getting a voice recorder for the notes and numbering the records so when I need to return to the topic I can go back and get the full information just incase I miss something
I like it. Shows you want to learn
So do you get paid to be an apprentice, like do you get paid every week.
Yes you do. It's a great career!
I just finished HVAC school a couple weeks ago, and I am taking my 608 tests next week (shooting for universal). My aim is to be a commercial service tech, maybe some industrial, and I’d like to stay far away from residential if I can. Well I’m possibly only a couple weeks away from that first day. The career services advisor from my school informed me of a local company that needs a full time installer (another one I’d like to not do lol). Should I just go for it anyways? Gotta start somewhere right?
I already have many of the tools I need, I have no issue getting more because I am a total tool fanatic.
I'm 25 and I start school next week.. 6/4/21 i should be graduated on 01/04/2022.... wish a brother luck im excited and nervous at the same time
im so glad i took the initiative too look for schools and get started! i think im gonna do really good with this career choice
