14 HVAC Sales Clichés to Avoid: HVAC Salespeople and Their Unoriginal Myths

  • HVAC salespeople are notorious for using the same old clichés to try and close a sale. But if you know what to look out for, you can easily avoid these myths and get on with your life. In this video, I'll be going over some of the most common HVAC sales clichés and why you should avoid them at all costs!
HVAC Salesmen will say "It's not if your furnace breaks down, it's when." "You don't want to be left out in the cold." "If you don't act now, you'll regret it later." They might as well be speaking a different language. But here's the thing: they're not. HVAC salespeople and "Comfort Advisors" are using tired old clichés because they work. And why do they work? Because they tap into our deepest fears: the fear of being without heat in the middle of winter, the fear of making a costly mistake, and the fear of regretting our decision later on. So next time an HVAC salesperson tries to close you with a cliché, don't be afraid to call them out on it. With any luck, you might just get a discount.
    I hope this video helps.

My a/c and heating system is 41 years old and this past summer the a/c unit crapped out. 3 different hvac techs told me they couldn’t get parts. The heating system still working ok but it’s time to start looking for a new system before the summer.

Ya chances are there are no parts for a system that old.

Texas EPA life expectancy of an AC system is 10 to 12 years I like what you do trying to help inform homeowners because there are a lot of grimy, HVAC technicians and salesman but sometimes you put high expectations where there shouldn’t be it’s all case by case with usage maintenance done environment, etc. Someone who lives on the coast near sea water is not gonna get 15 to 20 years.

Only wish that you folks serviced where I live. (Not sure I'd want to pay a trip charge to my current location :^) - Have a great weekend!

Might be worth it in some cases. Finding good help these days is a real chore. In fact, finding a decent licensed and insured HVAC company is just a hard.

So true and more HVAC companies need to control their appetite to hussle customers around their exisiting equipment's age for replacement. Many of them truly aren't good enough to put in a new system and have them function per factory spec.
I was looking around for a condenser fan motor OEM as I wanted to retain the 3 or 4 wire leads vs. universal type with 7 or more. Can't find any...The existing motor is an Emerson K55HXKDM 1/3 HP 1105 RPM 208-230 V 2.50 amp class B air over 7.5 mfd. Trying to find a quality brand ball bearing motor with OEM wire leads is impossible !
I also have to agree with Fox that older systems do not need replaced if they are repairable. The cost of a new HVAC will never pay the home owner back in saved power consumption during its lifetime, most likely. All of these DOE, EPA and CARB rule changes do everything they can to condem older systems when they don't need to be. The cost of refrigerants is a complete rip off and as much as I hate to say this, the sales price of R should be regulated in some way that everyone after the producer of those gases only make a reasonable margin vs. hundreds per pound.

This is helpful have a few questions - I have a home in Las Vegas and we have two r22 units. One is a 17 year old York and one is an 11 year old Goodman. They are attached to Carrier Furnaces which are 25 years old. Everything is still working. When the units eventually are beyond repair do I need to replace both the ac and furnace since they are r22? Also is it worth looking into two stage ac in an area where it is mostly triple digit heat in summer anyways? Thanks for the help.

I've gotten a few quotes and they're all around 11,500 for a new system. All electric. 1300 sq ft. I have broken ducts so to replace PART of the ducts is 2200 to 6500. None of that is for all the duct work. They smile A LOT when quoting. Also, the units quoted to me were a trane, a goodman, and a rheem. The second 2 were 2,000 to 3,000 dollars when i googled them. 8,000 for installing the unit in my attic. Not including the duct work!

“That’s why we don’t fix them.”
This is what our owner-tech of nearly five years said after we told him that we were going to pass on new unit after he swapped out a blower motor on our old unit. My wife had agreed to consider an estimate for a new unit, but after the repair, I decided to ride out the old unit until it broke.
Time to find a new tech.
P.S. This tech told me almost five years ago that it was time to upgrade to a new system.

Except for some of the off brand ductless systems. If it’s not Mitsubishi, Daikin, or Fujitsu then likely it’s phased out every few years and you literally can’t get replacement parts

Thus is very true. EMI made single speed ductless units a while ago, and I had to get the manufacturer to send me a letter stating no replacement boards.

I tell my costomers "Manufacture and import of R-22 was banned. And it's become so scarce that the company I work for can hardly get our hands on it. And even if we could. I'm sure you don't want to spend $200/lbs. Just to recharge your system."

Please help. HVAC TECH is coming tomorrow. My R-22 1999 Rheem model # rpka-049jaz with scroll compressor was making a squealing sound the day after the severe 13 degrees cold mornin. Immediately I turned it off i noticed that the auxiliary heat kept cycling on before it died.
The last TECH who checked it last year says it was repairable and parts were available. I'm pretty sure the compressor died suddenly. I don't want to invest in a new system because I don't anticipate keeping the house much longer plus the EPA is already holding hearings on banning R-410A so if compressor can't be repaired i was thinking to find a used compatible condensing unit as the air handler in Attic was running fine.
Any advise appreciated this unit is very common in my subdivision of homes built between 1998-2005 im in deep southeast in zone 3 but only 70 miles north of zone 2 bellow the hot humid line
