The Suzuki Ignis is one of the quirkiest cars on sale today. It combines the Japanese company's small-car expertise and 4x4 know-how into one package. While the name is a blast from Suzuki's past (most notably on the rally-inspired Ignis Sport), the current Ignis is a car that trades on its style, as it really stands out from the crowd.
Supposedly inspired by the Whizzkid coupe of the late 1970s, the main talking point is the raked rear windscreen and the design of the C-pillars. Combine this with the chunky wheelarches and distinctive front end, and there really isn't any other car on the road that looks like the Ignis.
At a time where living costs are rising and cars are becoming more expensive with each generation, the Ignis is a genuine breath of fresh air - it offers everything a city car should at a reasonable price, and it's a shame that few other manufacturers are building such affordable machines in 2023.

Here's the thing about these cars...
Everyone who buys them, LOVES them
I bought one and ended up hating it. Getting rid of it as soon as possible for a Yaris. Shame really, I liked the idea, looks and packaging but never felt safe on a dual carriageway in it.
How do these do on UK crash testing?
What do you mean ?
Folds like an empty water bottle in an accident
@@trissybabesdid it get blown around by the wind thinking about buying 1
Using this in India from 2018 , 47000 km , still the engine js so smooth. Using the automatic variant. This is no nonsense car. Great buy for me. ❤
Can you imagine what someone looking back on our driving habits would say 50 years from now... 'what, they used to take a 50k,. two tonne suv that did 20mpg, 1 mile to drop off a kid at school, then go and pick them up again 6 hours later'
The world has gone mad. Well done on showcasing smaller cars!
Having previously worked in the car trade (over 10 years) selling nearly new cars and drove pretty much every car on the road under £70k, I don't think any other car has put a smile on my face quite like the Ignis.
Used one for about 3 months, easy to drive, cheap tax and easy maintenance, relieable, fuel efficient as well, Absolutely Loved It !
Our roads are small. Car park spaces are tiny. On street parking difficult to find. A lot of us spend our drives in cars alone. So what to we do ? Force everyone to purchase an SUV ( by deliberately discontinuing alternatives ) to push through the electric agenda. There were loads of cars like these just a few years ago. Affordable transport for new drivers, people on a budget or people who just wanted a simple car. Well done greed. You've got the world you wanted through the green con.
Thanks for waking up to the big con. We need more people like you. They want to price us out of car ownership through the climate agenda. All that “own nothing and be happy” malarkey.
Plus, the larger the car, the more fuel it consumes, the more tyre particulates it spreads, the more damage it does to the roads, the more it encourages pavement parking, etc., etc. ad infinitum.
@@rogerc4963 The sensible thing would of been to allow petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric, hydrogen and anything else that comes along to coexist. Then if you want to by all means purchase an electric SUV. But they don't want that because they know if a petrol alternative for example is demonstrably better value those expensive electric SUV are going to sit there and go nowhere and in a year and a half be discontinued like any other struggling model. So they fix the game and do untold damage in the process
Here in the US we did have a period where there were many options of different body styles, sizes, and pricing. Everyone went for crossovers. So here I would say it's definitely was because of the consumer choice.
But tbh the smaller cheap stuff like Fiesta, Sonic, Spark, etc etc were really crap. Plastic fantastic. Low features and low safety. Plus people who could throw 16k ish on what the card cost new could afford something much nicer to be realistic.
Automakers barely tried here. The styling was also bad on most of them.
CAFE regulations and small profit margins helped kill them off.
@@baronvonjo1929 Assuming your Fiesta is the same as the UK Fiesta. That being the case can't say they are crap. Renowned as being good drivers cars. Interior is fine. Nothing outstanding but practical. As for safety they are perfectly safe. Is this due to it being a small car ? That's a misnomer in that case. We have motorways with 70mph limits and small cars are perfectly safe. It's how you drive and not what you drive. Modern safety scores are also skewed towards things like lane keeping assist etc. If a car doesn't have it then down goes the score.
Well done, brave Nikola, we actually need more cars like this!
Yes we do.
Have been using it for 3 years now. This car is nothing but a little sweet package of surprise! Never disappointed me. A delight to drive it.
They're actually pretty charming vehicles. I've driven them as they're like an original mini or fiat 500. They're just cheerful to drive. And you feel very socially responsible, too.
If everyone drove a car like this, the roads would be emptier, traffic jams shorter and the air clearer.
I think they are more reliable then Mini's or Fiat 500.
This should be the way forward for cars in the UK.. everything you need in KEI CAR size . At last, a sensible choice .
This was the way forward....... then electric happened ( sorry was forced through )
A former work colleague has one of these and is very happy with it. OK it's about the size of a shoe on the outside but as you mention Suzuki have managed to make the most of the available space. If most of the time you don't need the extra space and do general commutes these cars could suite most of us. With city traffic slower than a triffid in a cracked plant pot and country lanes with err hmmm.... drivers that drive very, very carefully heading up a long tailback of cars, vans, tractor and the afore mentioned triffid there are fewer opportunities to really use the performance of most cars. It does not matter if 0-60 is in double figures. If like my former work colleague you need the extra space on occasion a roof box is available. Just take it off when you don't need it. Note, no triffids were harmed during the making of this post. Thanks for sharing Nicola.
Got one of these in the same colour. Great fun to drive, old school, a bit like an original mini. Easy to throw around the narrow lanes here in north Norfolk. Ground clearance is good for such a small car.
I owned one of these. Paid 13k 4 years ago for top of the range model. Written off 8 months ago and was worth £13800😂
mad deal isnt it
I drive a July-2022 model, Maruti Suzuki Ignis in India.
I love it's sharp steering and Explosive Engine and my 82 years old Precious Mother finds INGRESS and EXIT, so EASY!
LOVE MY IGNIS!
💯
What is there not to love about this car? Its perfect for cities and towns. Fuel efficient, compact, has all the must have features you would need in a car. I do not own one but my wife does. I myself drive a much bigger and heavier vehicle but I often love taking out this one. If you have the means I would say own a large car like an SUV/MPV and a small car like the Ignis. This car can get things done in less half the time I can with my big car. Parking in small, tight spaces? No problem. Narrow lanes? No problem. Definitely a great buy as a second car or a first car for anyone.
Misses has it, and it is brilliant. I enjoy it too, surprisely spacious and actually fun.
I think this is the first time I am watching a video from this channel. This is a very sensible and interesting review. Loved it.
The dealer I take my car to is a multi brand site and gave me a 66plate one a few years back, it was surprisingly fun to drive i think it was a 1.2 DualJet, I think you've hit the nail on the head, we need some more basic vehicles that just do the job, everything has to be premium and fancy these days!
I have a Citroën C1. I don't love it, but it's all the car I actually need. I question whether someone who drives, say, a Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, really needs all that much car or, if by buying a huge electric car, are really doing anything "planet-friendly" either. I don't think my conscience would allow me to drive around in something so grossly unnecessary. A Suzuki Ignis driver, on the other hand, has my respect.
Your thought is quite impressive
spoken like a poor person. These small cars do more damage than you wish to accept. These are made Cheap, made to be cheap - now go and try making something that is cheaper than the rest of the cheap alternative in the market. You will very quickly find out how dangerous this "cheap product" mentality is. They have it they can buy an EQS, you can't. Don't bring your conscience into this. you surely have things that most people in the world can't afford, Where did that conscience go when buying those things ?
@@f.c.2475 do more damage to what? And we're only talking relative to big cars here. That was kinda the focus of this video. If you have some general hatred of small cars, why did you watch the video? Anyway, cars - and other things - that are designed to be cheap, are better than cars not designed to be cheap but made cheap. Compare, say, the Aygo/C1/107 with some Eastern Bloc car from the 1990s. Both cheap, not both good. I remember Top Gear's review of the Aygo - they pointed out the cost-cutting (not "corner-cutting") measures taken to make it a cheap car, but not a bad one. E.g., single front wiper, single tailgate strut, pop-out rear windows, no redundant electronics, etc. That's what makes a good small car, not a lack of investment in passive safety or production tolerances like those Eastern Bloc cars.
@@joshbrailsford nice of you to assume that I have a general hatred for small cars. Small cars that are well designed does not include cars like Ignis. Minis are small, Alfa Mito is small, Fiat 500 is small. These have some standards, way more than ignis or such cars can claim. So, yes cars like Ignis are just made to fill the roads "each house with a car". No need. And I also commented on your Pure-Consciousness. Would like a response on that too, since you must be a really good person. And one more thing about that "planet friendly", if EQS doesn't do anything friendly ? But there's only few EQS, ignis might be "eco friendly" in your mind, but there 100s of ignis for every EQS. Rendering your claim hollow.
@@f.c.2475 The Ignis has a lot more standards in reliability and practicality than your Alfas and Fiats. That is a lot more important dor a lot of people than the bit nicer materials etc in some other cars,.
Don't only use mine as a city car. Top of the line in Aust so no hybrid, but gets 5 km/100l even on long freeway drives at 110 kph, and the seats are comfortable, same colour, looks like a shrunken bushmaster. Really appreciate limiter and cruise control. Have to do the run Sydney - Canberra often. limiter to Mittagong then cruise control to Canberra. Not bad on mountain roads either, enough power and roll is not much if you are carrying luggage. Runs rough on 91 but smooth on E10, 94. Great car.
Incredible I've had 3 small Suzuki's as a second car since 1996 with the latest being a Suzuki Celerio purchase new late 2015. These cars are incredibly reliable, incredibly cheap to run and seem to last forever even when treated as a functional tool with little live. They were incredibly cheap to buy and journalists never reported them for what we're with semi bad reviews! Move forward to 2023, the price has rocketed, the build and all the goodness about them is as always been and a journalist says how marvelous they are! Seems the lesson from journalists to Suzuki is bang up your prices and we will sing the praises!
Not so in Finland. Back in 2017 it was 15400 euros. Now, six years old and outdated, 22400 euros. 45% increase!
I have one - months now. This is a very honest review. My Ignis is a delight to drive - mainly being small and light - but is absolutely just as good on the long run to Truro where my Daughter lives as the bigger, thirstyer, Vitara we had before. And its big enough for three adults and a weekends luggage. 4 would be - interesting - but we don't have 4... Most of the time close to 60 mpg in real life motoring. On the long motorway trip 54 mpg without going slowly.
I have an Iggy and I love it, it's very economical , and it's fun to drive , the sliding seats mean I can get the dogs travel crate in the back and the 6ft4 offspring fit in the back where before I had a Fiat 500 they had to fold themselves like an origami swan .
This is a great review.
The futures hydrogen maybe ? .
"Origami swan." Tremendous imagery. Made me laugh. Thanks 😆
Pleased it made you chuckle 😃
As a Suzuki fan stuck in the US I would literally kill to get one of these
A word for Suzuki. Our country’s experience with them has been good, mostly with sensible, affordable, small domestic or commercial vehicles. The reliability/longevity factor is high, well up with that of better known Japanese car makers
Totally agree, its a toss up between Suzuki and Toyota at times, Suzuki is almost a secret.
@@rbnhd1144so sad they left the US
@@betteheadbettehead4800 oh I totally agree, I loved the 4 door Grand Vitara's.
@@rbnhd1144 how I miss simple, manual cars and 4x4 just makes it better!
@@betteheadbettehead4800 I've had a few 4x4s with manual and enjoyed them, that was the 80s and 90s, I'm older now and auto is OK for me, but tbh I miss simple cars, truly dislike all the electronics in today's cars, I see no real reason for everything to be on a screen, give me knobs and buttons everyday, that way I can keep my eyes on the road, plus they are cheaper and simpler to repair.
I have owned one for almost two years and I love it (previously had a BMW 3 series van and VW Golf). I drive mostly on very twisty mountainous roads, sometimes a bit of mild offroad. I love the looks, it has character, and reminds me of suzuki Jimny, Fiat Panda and other iconic fun cars with no nonsense that become classics. Also considered the Dacia Sandero, a brilliant car, but more expensive. It is small but I can fit 2 large surfboards inside or my road bicycle with rear seats folded. The fact it's very light and has thinner wheels makes it very fun to drive. I didn't know about this car, but when I saw one I was instantly sold on it. Sometimes I do longer trips on highways (once a month) and that is the only occasion where its shortcomings are obvious. It does the job and is fuel efficient tough.
It makes me really happy to know they offer this with a 660cc engine in Japan, so that it can fit under the kei classes. It’s tiny and stupidly lightweight to begin with, and then to have it offered with such a small yet (…comparatively) powerful engine is fairly good tbh!!
This car is not available with 660cc even in Japan,it's got 1200cc same as the rest of market.
And this car can't fit into Kei kar regulation. Too big both in length and width.
Simply brilliant. I wish most cars on the road are like this, good for the environment and your pocketbook.
Totally agree! I’ve the all grip version, excellent off road too
This car is just a bliss to drive, maintain and just to live with.. so comfy, has all the creature comforts (you actually need), the manual is good, has a lot of space, goes offroad, is reliable, has plenty power in traffic/city and then after all this, gives you 50mpg. This car is one of the purest examples of "If you buy a car by looking at the features, tech and gimmicks you are always going to end up with a wrong car." and this car is just the opposite of that. Fab!
It's very popular among elderly couples, here in Denmark
I have ignis..love it and happy ❤️😍
Absolutely love this "segment" - Searching for something along these lines as a first car, albeit leaning towards an older Panda 4*4 for the extra capability and slightly cheaper used prices.
The problem with cars today is that people expect all cars to be built to the same spec as a 'luxury' car. 20 years ago a Corsa or Fiesta was filled with 'scratchy plastics' and nobody complained. The other issue is that a car with 'scratchy plastics' back then was less than £10K now it's double that, so I guess people better quality for the higher price.
Suzuki’s KeI cars took the ‘Mini’ concept to a whole new level. And we must appreciate Suzuki for that! They are great cars. Totally reliable. Absolute value for money. Suzuki’s space design and engineering is typically Japanese. Do much more with much less. Very good cars. Well Done Suzuki!
Highly underrated Car.... Exceptional performance!! Love the Ignis
I bought it . Ignis is my fav car
Truly as simple as that thanks for the review and a reminder of what cars are supposed to be
I'm very happy with my new ignis. Its absolutely amazing for daily use
We have got one. It’s great
How much did you pay for it on road
Its not a bad little run around
Great review Nicola
This is where driving should be going. Small, simple practical and low environmental impact. To influence the future of driving, discourage people from cruising around in vast SUVs with a smug grin on their face. Driving should be done with the least impact. Why does one person need a 2.5-3 tonnes behemoth to go to the shops/pick up the kids/commute? This car can hit 70mph, so why hundreds and hundreds of bhp in most cars? They don't offer anything over what this can. If one has any morals, this is the car to buy. Don't make cars an expensive delight to drive, make it a bit more basic and people will drive for necessity, not excess. Great message, great car. Also Suzuki produces cars that in another universe would be considered prestige, ie they are reliable. BMW and Mercedes also Range Rover are disastrously unreliable, like an old FIAT, so why are they prestige? History, from when they were actually good, and a bit of leather and wood (how original).
Great video guys! Ignis not available with a hybrid option in NZ (yet?), sadly.
love the color!
Had 2, a 2016 and a 2019 and loved them both.Went to an EV Corsa e and its been nothing but trouble.Back to a new Ignis come Saturday
We need more cars like the wagon R . Love the doors , big windows , ease of ingress and the space inside and love the engine --- the 1.2 lts one .
Fantastic video.❤
Underrated in India. Only because of back design. Rest of others are superb. Justfying its tagline.
I enjoyed watching the Video Review. Looks very nice for a Small Style SUV 😊
I wish we had more of these in the USA
You Don't see too many if these parked outside the local gymn..usually it's who has biggest suv competition 🤣💢👌
Love the Ignis but own a Vitara. We get 57mpg😊 suzuki rocks
Love it
Cars like these are great as long as one doesn't have to do long stints on the motorway. Got a small car myself (Pug 1007) and can do motorway due to engine (1.6) and soundinsulation. Smaller engine cars could as long the insulation is there and the tiny engines make use of a 6th gear.
Sounds a lot like my Kia Venga. Looks like a hatchback on the outside, but it was like a plush van on the inside…
My wife wouldn’t agree even to a test drive for 2 years, but once she did we got one, and she drove it most everyday and left her Lexus in the garage…
Well said
I believe that these smallest petrol cars should not be banned in favour of EVs. Lots of people will not have access to home charging or can afford the high price tags. I wouldn't mind betting that the carbon footprint of this car is very little different to an EV anyway.
finally someone that show respect in afortable vihicle..car that make sence to exciste
So beautiful and so nice
It‘s a honest, tiny and affordable car. Hard plastic inside, not to much „trainee systems“, agile and reliable.. Just great.
It certainly looks perfectly good enough for the price, but I wonder how it stacks up against the latest (allegedly much improved) Dacia Sandero, which now rides on the latest Renault Clio floor-pan, and compares well on price?
I hav top range cvt and was surprised it did not have heated mirrors or intermittent rear wash wipe.
Our family has 3 members, so we didn't wanted something big, a small car is more than enough for us. So I started looking up small cars and this Ignis was definitely on the list as the potential winner. Eventually we bought a Mazda 2. In my humble opinion, it's the best small car money can buy. It costs only a few thousands euro more than the Ignis, but the quality increase is absolutely worth it. We are extremely satisfied with this Mazda 2, it's quiet, it's comfortable, even in winter it eats only 5,6 liter/100 km, the 90 HP is more than enough for everything. I've looked up other small cars too but nothing comes close to this, even though that other cars costs more.
This Ignis is still a great car, it's just my opinion about the topic.
2 years ago i owned this car generation 1. only AMT transmition. Very good fuel economi 1: 17 km/ L
Yes, more small cars in review is good
Fewer collosal and waaay overpriced Duracell cars is good too
A cool car. As light as 900 kilos but it looks like a very sturdy muscular SUV. The 1.2 liter engine is enough for travelling in and around towns.
Does it come with left steering side?
Actually the car us economically challenged Brits need is not the £16k 50mpg Suzuki Ignis but the £8k, 70mpg Suzuki Celerio. I've driven the car for a couple of months in South Africa where they come with Brit-friendly right-hand drive. The range starts at R183,900. The car screams 'budget & basic' but as the nation regresses back to the 1970s, maybe it will fit right in!
Beautiful colour offered! Although this colour is not available in all countries 😕
awesome & clever! well done suzuki!😉
very nice car
We need this in Canada
I would expect this to be a welcome product in the US.
I wish Suzuki would come back to the USA. I would buy a Jimny and an ignis.
Nikola did you get your Sportage allready?
Hello. Is this exported from Thailand or India.
Hi Nicola, Great review, Umm... the Ignis, it's not a bad car, never really driven one, my sister has, and she didn't mind it. Was a car hire anyway, I prefer the more grown up Suzuki Swift, I had the previous generation 1.2L engine and I loved it, to me its a very capable car, probably won't do very well on the UK motorway, the Swift sport will do better there, however let's be honest, I live on an island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Paradise on Earth, narrow roads and it's just perfect,
No reviewers ever mention that there is room for a spare wheel. It was a basic requirement when I went looking for a new small economic car. They always mention the 0-60 time even though you are never likely to go from a standstill to 60mph if you are in the market for such a car.
There is a spare wheel boot under the luggage boot itself . Such a clever one too
All you need and a fraction of the cost of any EV to buy and run. Buy one while it's still legal.
One of the best in Indonesia. I own one.
The Awd version is sofa King cool
I booked ignis..♥️😌
I agree…
What is the best car cheap car for commuting? like 10 km through country roads and then 35 km on the motorway
Très bon véhicule, agile en ville et très pratique en région de montagne. En apprenant à bien doser la pédale d’accélérateur, la Suzuki Ignis hybride consomme très peu de carburant.
I always have the impression that the English drive on the wrong side.
That being said, I ordered the Ignis this week.
Cars have got toooo big and toooo expensive, great video by someone with a cheeky personality, bit like the car.
I got a Suzuki Jimny by coincidence, just looking to downgrade from a big 4x4.
After a short while we understood Suzuki´s philosophy, and man, they are right, no nonsense, not expensive, reliable cars with everything you actually need and not many fail points from stuff you don´t need. (Jimny is not expensive compared to comparable 4x4s).
Now we have 2 Suzukis on the driveway (hybrid Swift) and couldn´t be happier.
As an engineer, "modern" cars make no sense to me: fail points on wheels; the fact that you can automate something doesn´t mean you should do it and doesn´t make it better.
Not to mention that the 4Grip is great off road....
I have one....clocked 5500 kms last 6 months
How fast can it charge?
Recently got one in October. Very zippy car . Zip zap through anywhere without headache. 182 km/pH is max speed though i won't recommend. Just touched for 2 seconds. You can easily maintain 90-100 km on highway. Space is surprisingly adequate.
I am the proud owner of this little beauty and o boy it's amazing, taking it where I think I should not take her to 😂😂
If they had a uptuned version with 120 hp same for the swift and the swift sport gets a 30hp bump too
Simple is better, less to go wrong. Happier ownership experience. Im tired of the EV Lies.
In India we don't get hybrid, torque converter gear and rear sliding seats in ignis. Also recently ignis scored 0 in gncap would you still recommend it?
Can it go on long journeys and rough roads?
I think the Ignis is cute. People are mocking it, but I like it.
I love cars under 4 metres in length i had. A fabia 1,9 sdi good for motorways now aygo my upgrade in 3 years will be the suzuki ingnis hybrid woo
