  • In this video I briefly dive into the all-too-often ignored or unknown topic of trailer tire speed ratings. Many who use trailers are unfortunately unaware that trailer tires have speed limits they can be safely operated it at, and often those ratings are low enough that many of us have unknowingly exceeded them while driving down a highway or interstate. Please check this out and give it some consideration for you own safety and the ones you love the most. I welcome anyone's questions, comments or feedback. Please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for watching! Please hit like and subscribe if you dig what we're doing here. Be safe out there and keep camping America!

    I have been running the OEM Castle Rock ST tires on our Coachman Apex. Right now, I have about 3500 mi towing on them. I don't roll any faster than 63 MPH and stay on top of tire pressure and loading. So far, no problems.

    Jim until you mentioned this at work I never realized this. I don't have a camper, but I have several tool, utility, and equipment trailers and know I have exceeded the speed rating before.. PS I have had a blow out on my equipment trailer and it does a lot of damage. Thanks for the info.

      My pleasure...I feel that so many are in the same situation...it's not widely known for some bizarre reason. Anyone who tows needs to know this!

    We had blowout twice on our fifth wheel. After the second time we got a TPMS. Great videos!

      Blowouts are absolutely no joke and can be very scary, not to mention damaging. A TPMS system is definitely in our future and I'll do a video about them too at that point. Thank you so much for your kind words! I have a long way to go and much to learn about making videos but I sure enjoy making them. The Goodyear endurance I have has a speed rating of N. This indicates a mX speed rating of 87mph. I'm trying to find out if it is safe to drive 80mph for a prolonged amount of time.

    Not just speed plays. If you’re doing 70 and it’s 100° out on asphalt, you’re tires are gonna heat up faster

    When should we replace low mileage tires. They look great but are 4 years old, no cracks, but worry that I should replace at 4 or 5 years anyway

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! I can totally understand your concern. I would personally not run my tires past 5 years even if they appear to be in good condition. I just feel that peace of mind has a significant value to and would feel much more confident rolling down the interstate after changing them. It may be premature in some circumstances but it absolutely would be weighing on my mind until I just gave in and changed them anyway. Most campers are heavy. Let's face it, even 'ultralight' units like ours, are in most cases, multi-ton boxes following us down the road at high speed attached by a tiny pivot point. This truth only strengthens my resolve to have rock-solid confidence in my tires, and old tires just don't instill that confidence for me.

    What temperature should the tires be?

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! In general, during the hot summer months my camper tires run anywhere from 105-130 degrees (F) depending on how fast we're going, surface temp and surprising it seems like, road material too. Truthfully, what I'm looking for is consistent (within a reasonable margin) temperatures across all trailer tires. A higher temp could indicate low inflation or other structural issues warranting further investigation. Also worthy of note. If you're towing a tandem or tri-axle trailer and both your tires on a given axle are hotter or cooler than the other axle(s) tires, it may indicate you're unevenly loaded front-back and you should consider re-distributing weight. Taking that further...if both or all tires on one side are hotter than the other side than it could indicate uneven side-to-side weight distribution. These are not hard and fast rules, just things to be aware of and to consider. I'm downright anal about my camper tires and want to do everything in my power to ensure a successful and safe trip.

      @@everythingrv2301 thanks for the info, also how fast do you generally try to tow?

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301  3 года назад +2

      We find that our rig is comfortable a towing anywhere from 60-70 on highways that allow it. It varies significantly on road conditions, traffic and wind of course.

    If you're towing a travel trailer at 70+mph, you have a death wish going on. There's a lot more to towing safely than tire speed ratings.
