Trailer Tire Speed Ratings: Are You Towing Too Fast?
In this video I briefly dive into the all-too-often ignored or unknown topic of trailer tire speed ratings. Many who use trailers are unfortunately unaware that trailer tires have speed limits they can be safely operated it at, and often those ratings are low enough that many of us have unknowingly exceeded them while driving down a highway or interstate. Please check this out and give it some consideration for you own safety and the ones you love the most. I welcome anyone's questions, comments or feedback. Please feel free to leave them below. Wait, what?! If it has a 7 pin plug how do you back up and run it to hook up using a remote if it's not plugged in? Where does the power come from? I'm really confused by these Huskys 7 pin plug, I've been thinking that my power would go through that, from my truck, so I wouldn't be able to raise or lower my trailer unless I had it plugged into my truck and that would sure be a pain.

    • @flavius29663
      @flavius29663 11 месяцев назад

      The 7 pin showed is the trailer's 7pin, the jack just has a support to keep it safe from elements. The jack ( I believe, you should check) comes with a single wire that goes to the positive terminal of the trailer battery.

    When should we replace low mileage tires. They look great but are 4 years old, no cracks, but worry that I should replace at 4 or 5 years anyway

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301 3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! I can totally understand your concern. I would personally not run my tires past 5 years even if they appear to be in good condition. I just feel that peace of mind has a significant value to and would feel much more confident rolling down the interstate after changing them. It may be premature in some circumstances but it absolutely would be weighing on my mind until I just gave in and changed them anyway. Most campers are heavy. Let's face it, even 'ultralight' units like ours, are in most cases, multi-ton boxes following us down the road at high speed attached by a tiny pivot point. This truth only strengthens my resolve to have rock-solid confidence in my tires, and old tires just don't instill that confidence for me.

    What temperature should the tires be?

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301 4 года назад

      Thanks for watching! In general, during the hot summer months my camper tires run anywhere from 105-130 degrees (F) depending on how fast we're going, surface temp and surprising it seems like, road material too. Truthfully, what I'm looking for is consistent (within a reasonable margin) temperatures across all trailer tires. A higher temp could indicate low inflation or other structural issues warranting further investigation. Also worthy of note. If you're towing a tandem or tri-axle trailer and both your tires on a given axle are hotter or cooler than the other axle(s) tires, it may indicate you're unevenly loaded front-back and you should consider re-distributing weight. Taking that further...if both or all tires on one side are hotter than the other side than it could indicate uneven side-to-side weight distribution. These are not hard and fast rules, just things to be aware of and to consider. I'm downright anal about my camper tires and want to do everything in my power to ensure a successful and safe trip.

    How does your Expedition tow this big boy?

    • @everythingrv2301
      @everythingrv2301 4 года назад

      Thanks for watching! We have a 2017 Expedition and it tows the Mallard with ease. The GVW of the Mallard is 8600 and the Expy has a towing capacity of 9200 so we have a decent margin there even if we were traveled fully loaded. Power from the EcoBoost is effortless; we go down the interstate @ 65mph in 6th gear with no issues. On steep long interstate grades it may briefly drop down to 4th gear but rarely gets above 3500rpm. The brakes on Expeditions are quite large and have never showed any signs of decreased performance or fading; even after long down-hill descents. We certainly use 'Tow/Haul' mode when towing and it helps a lot with the shift patterns for both accelerating and downshifts to utilize engine braking when going down a hill. The integrated brake controller works wonderfully with the Mallard. The only spec that I wish I had more capacity on is the 920lb tongue weight limit that the Expedition has. I have a tongue scale and we usually run 800-850lb on the hitch. I'd like a little more room there, but that's just because I like to have a wider buffer zone on my specs. We use a Reese trunnion style WD hitch with Dual-Cam sway control (I hope to have video coming this spring) that keeps our rig level and all-but-eliminated any trailer sway. We love the Expedition for towing our Mallard; it has proven to be a solid and comfortable setup. Thanks for the question ; please let me know if you have any further questions or would like me to elaborate on anything else. Thanks again for watching.
