Every year a new university is throwing their hat into the ring of making a online CS masters available. Coursera now has 13 programs in CS/Data Science!!!
Its untrue that UIUC MCS is newer than OMSCS, I was looking at it years before OMSCS even came up in the radar. They may have made it more massive recently, but they have long been providing a distance program. Other Universities that have had distance (online) programs before OMSCS include: CMU, Stanford, University of Colorado, as well as University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (and probably others I don't now remember). I know this because I was long considering these, but ended up jumping on OMSCS (when it just started) because it simply didn't require a GRE and was a fraction of the cost, while still being from a top University.
I have heard that many people have to repeat several classes in the OMSCS to get a passing grade, is that also the case with the MSC? On another note, I have taken a handful of Coursera courses and several of them are traps - they aren't super in-depth or have weird/highly variable expectations and mixed quality of delivery. This problem has driven me away from the platform. Would you say that the MCS is more like a college class simply hosted on Coursera or does it have that overly scripted feel?
I haven’t heard about a lot of people needing to retake any courses in the MCS. The grading is quite fair in most courses and there are very little surprises. The free courses and the full MCS program is a completely different experience. The courses lectures are shared with the full program, but the full program courses come with live instructors, TAs, access to course forums, and course Slack channels. The assignments are different as well. Coursera is just the platform where content is delivered and assignments are submitted, but it feels like a regular (virtual) college class with instructor and peer interaction.
@@willelliottYT That's a relief. Now I am really torn between these two. My interests are in AI and ML which seems to be covered in more depth and by more courses with the OMSCS. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to risk not completing my degree or dragging it out for too long with the OMSCS. Have you taken any of the ML or data science courses for the MCS and do you think they were rigorous?
@@BananaPieGaming I am on the general, non- data science, track but have taken Theory and Practice of Data Cleaning, which is an option in both tracks. It was a fairly straight forward course and not terribly rigorous, but that is due to it being a more approachable topic. Both colleges are top-flight CS programs with excellent students so they have a need to keep the rigor high, but nothing out of reach causing students to drop or look elsewhere for their degree. You can't go wrong with either program. I'd take a look at the Illinois MCS-DS track and see if it has the courses you want covered when comparing to the OMSCS.

If you don’t have a lot of the technical prerequisites you will want to first know how to cover those. Object oriented programming, algorithms, and data structures are the primary ones. UIUC offers a data structures proficiency exam if you don’t want to take a college credit course. As for programming, they recommend taking this course at a local college before applying - community college would suffice.

Really appreciate your effort on adding quality information..I have a question - whats your suggestion for online masters in computer science between UT Austin vs UIUC..I couldn’t get much reviews on UT Austin MSCSO anywhere and also they don’t have much detailed syllabus of their courses (specially no details for elective courses) ..currently I got confirmation from both of the universities and it would be helpful for me to get some details regarding UT Austin as the price is cheaper than UIUC..I am average in c++ language as part of my project work enhancement ..so considering my experience I am looking for a masters which will basically help my development skills..thanks

These are master's programs. As such, many COMPANIES have tuition reimbursement programs. So your daughter needs to get a BS in Computer Science, then get a job in a big software company, then take advantage of tuition reimbursement. Having said that, in the case of OMSCS, most Software Engineers in the US can afford the $500 per class that OMSCS charges even without the reimbursement.

I have seen a lot more universities adding their own online master's programs during COVID as well.
@@mannyd629 Agree, only 5 years ago it seems like the OMSCS was the only player in town. Now there are a ton of options!
That’s the development and use of technology. In 100 years or less school will mostly be virtual.

They don’t, the program website has a breakdown of what courses are offered in what semesters
