Thanks for mentioning the fact that lots of wraps along the length of a piece of foam will compress the life (floatability) out of it. I've watched many fly tying videos that show the guy cranking down on the foam to make a big, bulky base, and the narrator will talk about how this will add to the floatability of the fly... which it totally wrong. Compressing the foam makes it sink like a rock. It's also worth noting that if a tyer used a long, skinny strip of foam and wraps it along the length of the hook shank (sort of "palmering" it, I guess), the tighter he wraps it in creating a long, slim body, the more he squeezes the floatation out of it. If you wrap foam strips, wrap gently. Tie it in tightly with thread wraps at the front and back.

Not sure if it's because I'm newish to fly fishing, but I love those foamy flies. They sit nicely on the water and stuff has always eaten it up

Excellent as always. Foam is my nemesis when tying, and these tips will no doubt greatly improve my relationship with the material!

When layering sheet foam, I use 3M spray contact cement. It works like a dream.

the grasshopper at the end was a Mop Hopper and he already did a video on that. Its an amazing fly that can be tied in a wide variety of colors. search his channel for "mop Hopper" and it will come up.

Went to Hobby store and bought a pack of 6 colors 10x18" long. Cut a strip of each 10x6" and gave to a fly tying buddy. Then I cut whats left in strips when I need them. If you buy at a fly shop you will pay 3 or 4 times the cost of the 10x18 sheets for a couple of 3x5sheets.

All very true, but I really like to support my local fly shop whenever possible. It’s a tough business and they regularly supply incredible advice.

@@tightlinevideo thats nice. The nearest flyshops for me is 33 and 43 miles away. One shop makes me feel like I'm an inconvenience and I do support the other 2 when Iam in the area. But I get most of my supplies online. Enjoy your videos

I love how ALL videos on this tell you how to use it, but NO-ONE tells you where to get it from. I’ve looked EVERYWHERE. Even AMAZON doesn’t have glow in the dark sheets of foam. They have foam, but already made into something or it doesn’t glow. I’m giving up on using foam. It’s impossible to find. And the nearest bait shop for me is over 100 miles away. Yes, I live in the south, no I’m staying right here! If anyone has tips on how to get some, please slap me across the face with the info! I don’t want to not know how to fish and have the best chances to feed my family! Plus I need to show my baby boy!

When your fly explodes you just threw garbage into your river. So no thanks.

Interesting Idea ... But compared to Feather and Fur Flies that look so delicate and realistic ... those foam flies look crude and like bits of garbage ... their stark colors and sharp edges makes them look seriously Unnatural .... If fish eat those foam bits , I'd be surprised ... But if they do ... I guess they will eat Anything .... You could save yourself a lot of work , time and money ... by buying Plastic Insects from China at $1 a dozen and Tying them to your hook ! ..... Good video though !
