Great video and encouraging as a new fly tier. I like how you discussed your procedures with flexibility and demonstrated with a laid-back almost nonchalant manner. Some of these tying demonstrations and patterns can be intimidating for new fly tiers, and you can get paralysis by analysis if you don’t think you’re doing everything just right. Thanks again and you have a new subscriber.
Thank you for sharing your fly with us. This inspires me to get back to learning to tie flies. I would only tie when I was participating in a class, so my actual fly tying time is very little in total. I can only imagine the thrill of catching fish on a fly you tied yourself. I would love to experience fly fishing one day. I too like your easy going teaching technique. Having a closer view of the fly as you tie will be very helpful for me in any future patterns you share. ❤
I love the way you describe finding the materials and the tying process. I thought I perfected a similar caddis pattern a couple years ago. now, I can't wait to tie yours.Thank you.
Totally fed up of seeing showroom flies. Not only that its the same flies over and over again. This was a treat. This is a proper fishing fly. The way you thought of putting this fly together is exactly as I would do. Taken good elements and putting them together. For me its more sparse and simple. And the fly that looks a bit battered can often pick out those tricky fish. First time I have seen your channel. Love your take it easy approach. Will now browse other videos of your. Thanks. Shaun. UK.
God bless you. I have tied flies for over 50 years. I love this patter and I love your attitude about sharing with new fishermen and woman . I really enjoyed your video.
I love that you don't waste any of the deer hair. So many video makers waste a lot of material. I've found many ways to get more use out of my materials that aren't explained in videos. I usually have a scrap container for short pieces of chenille, unused parts of feathers, etc. Two lessons I've learned are opposites. Don't be too cheap to use your materials, don't waste them either.
Good innovation and adaptation of desirable elements into a dynamite pattern, Mike! Besides that, Doug Swisher would be proud of you for the dIrection you've taken the Madam-X in! PS - I tie on a Danvise too!!
I love this fly and an anxious to see if this works during the winter when the rivers are still moving as well as in the summer when those terrestrial are dropping in. Thank you for sharing.
Ok, have now tied a bunch and fished them,as per your guidance. Thank you sir ! Your approach to tieing it is indeed efficient and fast, just what is needed - there's some great techniques in your video too. I love the so called guide flies, all scraggly and quick to tie but fish well. And yep I did get a mostly positive response to these. They are easy to see and fish with (a bonus for me at my age). I do prefer the peacock herl body to a dubbing one I was contemplating. I do find however that fish break the herl - I might try a quick thread up it to the eye before pulling the deer hair to the eye. I'm not yet sure about the rubber legs. My results on first fishing were equal with and without. More to study yet before I decide.
Interesting approach to a problem. A friend of mine from many years ago had a pattern he came up with that became known as the "guide saver". It has many of the same features as your pattern. Such as bullet head , rubber legs, peacock herl thorax.and deer hair.
Yes , I'm sure there are many versions of this. Form meets function.

Very nice video. I'm tying your fly as soon as I say "Thanks Mike" ! Perhaps a video on the 3 most important knots to use in fishing. My choice would be: 1) clinch knot (w/wo hemostats 2) surgeon knot (+the surgeon loop) 3) the double uni knot. As for flys to teach, (in Mich.) I would choose 1) the parachute Adams , 2) the Borcher fly, 3) the Improved Caddis, 4) Hare's ear, 4) the Pheasant tail, 5) Pat's rubber legs, 6) the Wooly Bugger, and some simple beetle or hopper fly. All somewhat easy and they should cover a lot of fishing around our great state.
Wow, the list of flies is exactly what I would choose. I would add rubber ant and a sulfur. If you watch my video on the flies we assemble for the trout Unlimited fly fishing school you will find your choices there too. I have made videos on these knots but may repeat them.
I used to be a very hard core fly fisherman n tier. Pa guy so i have lots n lots of trout water around me. good trout water. I have not fly fished or been into my tying stuff for years. I have couple thousand dollars in materials. I couldn’t even imagine. What the cost of materials is right now! I was still expensive 9-10yrs ago. I had gotten more into tying jigs for crappie n smallmouth. Kinda got away from fly fishing. I will be back here a day soon. There probably been some neat gear n new flys in past 10 yrs. Last thing i was really into before i stopped was George Daniels streamers and got big into wet flys. Man on man! I fishing wet flies fun. I could believe i didn’t do that when i started over 25yrs ago. I was hard core nymph guy and did some dry fly stuff. Lots of small stream brook trout fishing thrown in also. Thanks for sharing. Bring backs lots of memories!
This is the first time I've ever been to your channel. And I had myself a little chuckle. Even before I found out that you were located in Michigan, your phrase about not putting the fly on your fly patch made me immediately think that it was something a Yooper would say. "Yah, Don't put dis fly on yer patch dere, da Smalley's will jump out da water and gitcha!"
Looks like a great fly. I am going to tie a dozen and give it a try. Would ne interested to see how you tie some basic "guide flies". Everyone ties the in a different manner with various materials. Thanks
Thanks for another enjoyable lesson . I believe this would really be good on the East Walker out of the Bridgeport reservoir here in Ca. Especially in late summer or a warm day when the hoppers are up and about and the Caddis are busy .
This is a cool looking fishy fly. I like the best of a few all in one fly. I like creating flies myself n mix different color variations. Its fun to see what works best in different waters. I wonder how it would do in still water impounds n the like. Thanks for sharing! God Bless n Fish on!
I like. I fish something similar that is also a combo like yours with similar thinking! - just with a strand or two of crystal flash in the wing, and a fine body using synthetic dubbing that when wet looks like peacock hurl - or peacock hurl. Going to try a few of yours for comparison. I like deer hair wings because the continue to float, look natural, and…. I can see the pale deer hair wing easily in the rivers/streams to locate the fly and know when there is a take. Oh, btw, i put my flies in my hat band but don’t worry - I always carry a walking staff for wading so when the fish try to jump at me and eat the ones in my hat i am already set to beat them away.
A fly that rises on its own is an interesting tactic. I will try for sure. Much like the Dalhberg diver or the Leisenring lift. After all that’s what the bugs are trying to do. I would say a smaller size might be appropriate. Fishing that mop in some of our selective trout waters here in Pa would probably cause the trout to flee.
Mike, I’m tying one already. Hey, it’s 17 degrees here. It’s tying season. Can’t wait to try them. Been fly fishing 60 years and tying almost as long. Always looking for that new killer fly.

another idea I have for a video is, making your own dubbing with yarn and a coffee grinder (and the multi space box to hold all of them that you make)
When letting the fly swing at the end of your drift do you find the fly getting water logged. Madam X is my best and favorite big fish fly it has brought a lot of big browns to the net. Thanks!
Where in Michigan are you? What river(s) do you fish here? I’m in Michigan. Extreme SE Temperance. I thank you for teaching me to put a loop around the deer hair first then around the hook! I’ve been tying just 2 months and haven’t got many flies wet yet. Please show more I really enjoyed this video. I’ve fished at Labo park !
Hi I'm in Ann Arbor and a member of the Ann Arbor TU which covers your area. I fish mostly the Huron for Bass and also Mill Creek in Dexter for trout. Took me a while to figure out the Loop thing
@@MikeMouradianthank you for responding Mike. I’m 68 but diaper new to all this. It would be great to see you fishing somewhere. I wouldn’t be a nuisance I promise ha. I just subscribed to Trout Unlimited I’ll look for you
Enjoyed the video, what do you recommend for a start up kit if I wanted to learn more about fly tying? It seems like a great way to pass the time during the cold winter months.
First start slow and don't buy a lot of stuff. Practice tying Rubber spider, Clouser minnow, Wooly bugger, then Caddis. That will teach you most all the techniques.
Well what does it even look like? He holds it up but I can't even see a hook or anything. . I don't need anything special but I do need to see an eye to attach my lone to! I think I missed the part where he reached into discarded clippings and called it's a tie.
Quite interesting. You didn’t specifically mention it, but it looks like you created a bullet head on the fly. Looks good. On the use of half hitches, Al Beatty mentioned in 1 of his videos that 3 half hitches is equal to to a 5 or 6 turn whip finish. I tested it & found he was correct. He got a good chuckle when I commented that he was right. You actually used double half hitches, so they should really secure the materials. Thank you for sharing your pattern. I look forward to additional flies that you post.
Thanks for sharing not only the fly pattern but your presentation. I like the simplicity and water pushing design.

I love tying, and it's a great way to learn about the flies that work for a specific area. Its a joy to give a new fisher a few flies on the river.

I find many fly formulas Have you cut and them reapply the same material. I like my flies simple and fast. Honesly I'm too impatient.
I loved "I can find my fingers most of the time"! Great looking fly. If I ever get back to Michigan I will have these with me.

I love the Danvice. I’ve been tying on mine for 10 years. I really enjoyed the commentary as well.
I also love my danvice. I've had mine for at least 20 years
Best fly tying video ever, period!!! Thanks for it, and all the best for you! I will try to tie it with my son and use it in our european rivers...
Wow, thanks! Hope it works in Europe.
I love this fly and an anxious to see if this works during the winter when the rivers are still moving as well as in the summer when those terrestrial are dropping in. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like a winner. MY favorite is the HORNBERG original fly developed by a Maine game warden. Thanks for the info.

Good show, great tie,all you really need! Fish gotta eat,we gotta fish! Good days to you!
Absolutely beautiful work sir
Thank you kindly
Looks great! I’ll try a few on our local bass here in central Texas. Thanks a lot! 👍👌🎣
works great for bass. Treat it like a popper.
Please video your version of tying a Hellgrammite and as always thanks for your videos

Very unique tie, thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome 😊
I always love watching your videos and listening to your knowledge. Do you have a Prime Mouradian fly for saltwater? Thank you, Mike!
I don't salt water much. If I do I listen to the old guys I would fish with.

Thanks! Its pretty easy and effective.

The wading stick is a good idea for the hat band! Dubbing idea is good too.
Is that dubbing a fly or drubbing a Smalley? Happen to enjoy both, just got cornfused about the two terms. 😮

thats the joy of deer hair it resists water. if it gets wet I just tie on another. its easy and cheap.

It's all about getting out there and fishing!

I agree. I'm working on a series of those videos.

will mule deer hair work if so what part of the hide is best?
I have no idea. Is a mule deer a deer?? You want long straight fur that fans out when you cinch it.
Kewl Mike!
Gonna go toss together a few right now.
....lee s.
Thanks for showing this. Do you find it works on small stillwaters for trout.
Yes they do. Its also a great blue gill fly.
Who do you buy the bulk Peacock Hurls from?
I often pick it up at fly fishing shows. I use a lot of peacock hurl.
kind of a quickie madam X. after about 70 years of fly tying i will quit trying to make them perfect. too shaky now anyway LOL
yes ! the fish don't care. Keep at it.

So, we should be looking for our local deer hair connoisseur to purchase instead of roadkill? LOL! Thanks for sharing.
You bet!
I can see with all that hollow deer hair, that the fly should float well.
Thats the point. I should have mentioned that. Thanks
madam X fly?
similar but simpler to tie and with deer hair.
Nice bug.
Looks like a hopper
Very similar but much easier to tie
