Very much so. It's basically the show's version of "Cat People."
They should never have messed with African soil. Alan's company probably meant well but to the locals they were being disrespectful to their land.
Yes, it very much works, particularly in that they were able to secure an actual lion for the ending.
I can't remember for sure, but doesn't this episode have Rod give the closing narration before the lion jumps? I remember thinking that was effective, but I could just be Mandela effecting.
This is gonna give me nightmares
I love how the lion shows up at the end, since we keep hearing animal sounds throughout the episode thinking one will show up, and finally seeing a real animal show up in the room
And they were kind enough to get the lion a Door Dash delivery in the end.
Seconded, it was similar to a season 1 episode, where they actually got an elephant to show up for a brief, singular shot.
I was surprised they actually got a real lion for the ending when I first read that in the “Twilight Zone Companion”
Just like a real jungle, the terror is unseen until it gets you. This episode was really well done.
This is a clear case of the power of the “show, don’t tell” rule of storytelling
This episode masterfully evokes the fear that can be felt while walking home alone at night. I loved the ending of this one. It's definitely an underrated episode.
This is an impressive psychological horror thriller episode!
This is my favorite episode because it was the only one that ever actually creeped me out. “Less is more” done perfect
Next to Rod Serling, I think Charles Beaumont was one of the best writers for Twilight Zone 💜 such a suspenseful episode
My favorite scene isn't the scary stuff, it's in the board meeting where Alan lets the other guys mock the "silly superstitions" of the African witch doctors while then pointing out all of their own such beliefs (one guy has a rabbit's foot, another believes in astrology and so on). He even points out the building they're in doesn't have a 13th floor (which is a fairly common thing in high-rises; you have a 12th floor and then it skips to 14).
My dad is a lot like Alan when it comes to superstitious beliefs. I once bought a book at a shop that explains how superstitions originate.
I like that too. He's not a racist hypocrite like the other board members, he's genuinely dismissive of all superstitions.
The short story it's based on was actually set in the 2200s, and the implication was that the curse fell on them for colonizing Africa with high-tech civilizations in domes. Very atmospheric either way, and one of my favorites.
I wonder why they didn’t use the original sci-fi context. Not like the show was shy about setting stories in the future before.
@@ThePa1riot Perhaps it would then require explaining the high-tech domes and they wanted to focus more on the curse?
I read the story and was disappointed that they changed the setting to New York (or rather the faux NY of Hollywood).
My number 54 episode. Good, but different from the story. John Deh-ner (reviewer misprounces his name) was a veteran actor and does a good job here. O.k but not special 😊
I used to hate this episode, but it eventually grew on me. The sound design of jungle noises always sounds so eerie with the lonely streets at night. And man that ending is brutal despite never seeing the violence
This is one of those episode that usually don't come to your mind when you think in The Twilight Zone, but when it's appears in a compilation you think: "Ohh, yeah, that was a really good one"... at least to me. I think this episode deserve much more in my mind
I always liked this episode in particular. To me, it’s one of the more underrated episodes of the series along with The Midnight Sun
Precisely, it's one of the more unsung episodes, in my opinion, and deserves to be more well known.
In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion kills tonight.
Rod Serling: A-WEE-MO-WEH! A-WEE-MO-WEH! A-WEE-MO-WEH! A-WEE-MO-WEH…
I love John Dehner's episodes, especially comparing him as the skeptic in this and the fantastic stuff he pushes in Garrety and the Graves and he plays both well.
This ones ending always stuck with me! Hearing the Lion roar and him scream!
He played JUMANJI and never finished. He dead
♫ Welcome to the Jungle! We got Terror and Thrills! ♫
Welcome to the Jungle! We have fun and games! Except when you're in the Twilight Zone!
I remember seeing the original when I was 11 years old. The episode was downright eerie and the finale freaked me out. John Dehner was great at ramping up the tension. Another superb script from Charles Beaumont. He wrote five stories for the Zone.
I Love ❤️ The twilight zone
Poor Doris, she had a brutal death that she didn't deserve, despite her husband being the one to cause the curse, not her.
She did warn him his actions would come back to get him. It’s ironic she says he won’t be back when he actually does return home only to be killed by the lion too
It's weird. They seem to have been given multiple protective artifacts and she was still in possession of most of them. The guy only took one of them, left it behind somewhere, and ended up lasting longer. Plot hole?
@@XenoSpyro the one left behind was the lion tooth. Maybe it was protecting them from the lion?
Also the poor cabbie! Unless it was all an illusion
Yep, rough go for some innocent folks... and will these deaths even cancel the dam?
Who else is waiting for five characters in search of an exit? It only took 3 years and over half a month for one of the best episodes of the twilight zone to have its time in the spotlight.
Toy story, but...unloved toys
Which didnt think they were, like buzz Lightyear
John Dehner. A wonderful actor, who was great in everything he did.
I just love John Dehner! He was great as Colonel Harvey in the Andy Griffith show :)
...Interpreting smoke signals. That's the first place I ever saw Dehner, playing that sleazy sort of guy, so that's the kind of character I tend to think of when I hear his name. He's clearly a good actor.
I just love the dude's reaction before the lion pounced was like "Well shit"
I'm SO enjoying these! I've watched the 2020 and 2021 compilations several times... so much great info! Thanks!
I like this episode when I first watch this. So suspenseful without the use of music. But instead the use of sound here. Especially the jungle sounds here.
This episode always creeped me out! Just the creepy jungle music in the park. Idk why but it gives me chills
As soon as I see a lion in the room... I shut the door... and NOPE the F out 🤣🤣
Easily one of my top 3 favorite episodes!
As Guns and Roses once said, " welcome to the jungle, we got fun and games!"
We got fun and games
This reminds me of a short story called 'Tiger in the Snow' which had an extremely similar premise.
I wonder if the movie "Jumanji" took some inspirations from this episode for the movie. "Sounds of the African Jungle" could've been what inspired that eerie drum beats coming from the game that made people find it. And the lion attacking at the end is like when the lion was summoned from the game when Judy and Peter started playing.
I know that the movie was based off a children's book, but drawing inspiration from this episode of The Twilight Zone is probably what gave the movie a dark edge to it.
The best part of this episode - John Dehner. If they cast literally anybody else in the role, it would just not be right.
If this episode was redone today, the lion would be CG and made to look more monstrous/supernatural.
I remember watching the ending when I was younger, and my first thoughts of the final scene with the lion in the bedroom, signified that Doris turned into the lion. That was my original Remembrance of this episode.
Watching it again years later, I was able to look closer and see her body lying lifeless on the bed, next to the lion as the room lay in a wreck, before pouncing to Alan and finishing the episode there.
Truly an underrated and scary episode, since Dark Magic is something that people can psychologically fear, and this episode really brought it front, and almost like edge of your seat, waiting for what will happen next.
Also, another thing I found pretty interesting, with its “Show, But Don’t Tell” attitude, it reminds me heavily of what Steven Spielberg did for Jaws. We all know there was technical issues with the Mechanical shark they used for filming, but using the idea of doing it from the Shark’s POV is kinda ominous. Obviously we know it’s a shark, but we don’t know exactly what will happen.
Overall, this episode is definitely up there with my favourites!
It’s interesting that they used the sounds of a zebra for the sounds of the “jungle” (should be safari) since it gives the sense that Mr Richards is the prey to those who recognize the sound
Primal
This episode reminds me of a Val Lewton movie - done low budget, but with various stylish tricks to make it seem more scary.
This episode is in my top 25
I made this joke to myself, and I'm secretly proud of it: A lion's tooth? Why would he leave that lion around?
Probably one of my one and only favorite Twilight Zone episodes
I hope once you run out of twilight zone episodes you do Night Gallery !!
Great video.
Great upload !
Edit: btw, the lion was furnished by Gay's Lion Farm in El Monte, Calif.
Finally! Literally the first twilight zone episode I’d ever seen. I’m happy we made it to this.
Think this has the best final twist ever ... and for those who know the background sounds in FarCry2 are so similiar to the scary sounds in this episode!
wow this was good
So Alan heard some drums in the background, you know what that means, he has been playing JUMANJI! Now that’s a crossover or it might just have been some random drums playing, but nah, that would be too obvious! 😂
When got to the twist and put it all together. My brain just went “oh! Fairies! He’s pissed off a bunch of fairies!”
Because that’s what this plot is, a fair folk story!
Shadows in the corners, taunting from nowhere, people suddenly dead or whisked away never to be seen again, and turning into animals to attack you.
One of my favorite TZ episodes ever. I've always felt sorry for Doris. She didn't deserve what ultimately happened to her. Alan was such a smarmy and arrogant fink. His actions and attitude ultimately got him killed. And the same thing will most likely happen to the rest of his colleagues who participated in colonizing Africa and not respecting the land.
Dude should've just screamed "JUMANJI!!!!"
Interesting to know that the nostalgic critic still uploads great
dude
Forgot how much I love this channel
What makes us scared more than anything is when we’re alone with our paranoia. Because your mind can’t help sometimes but think of the things that scare you the most. Sometimes when it gets the best of you… It can make nightmares come true.
This episode reminds me of Jumanji(1995).
I wonder If Jumanji (1995) was inspired or aware of this episode given the similarities as well as having a scene very similar in which a character opens a door only to see a lion on a bed.
Honestly I never spotted Doris body when watching this (to focused on the lion) thought the twist was his wife had been turned into a lion to eat him
That almost sounds like Cat People!
What a nice episode
Thank god. This episode always confused me on what’s going on.
This is a good episode the lion at the end was pretty ominous and scary too
This was a good episode but what I think would have made it better is to have more of a twist at the end. Rather then ending with the Lion attacking have another scene where the wife comes home and finds him dead of a heart attack with no signs of a struggle or marks on his body. It was all in his head and his scoffing at the supernatural was hiding a dread of it that kills him.
Hey guys
I guess those protective charms only worked when they're all together? The one he forgot @ the bar is the one that got him, the lion's tooth! Yikes!
Each item seemed to be connected to the frightening sights & sounds haunting him: a feather, a claw, a finger, a tooth, etc... So if he lost the feather, he'd be pecked to death? Or if he lost the finger, the witch doctor wld have speared him... I'm guessing? Just an observation
This was the episode that actually made me sweat from the suspension that was going on
This reminds me of a Batman TAS episode
"Welcome to the jungle! We've got fun and games!!"
(Singing) Welcome to the jungle, we've got fun and games. We got everything you want honey, we know the names. We are the people that can find whatever you may need. If you got the money, honey, we got your disease. In the jungle, welcome to the jungle. Watch it bring you to your sha-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n knees, knees.
what an odd prequel to guess whos coming to dinner.
?
When I first saw this, I expected it to be like Jumanji, a jungle taking over a big city.
I found it interesting that there were no establishing scenes of Africa, where the characters had returned from. It would have provided an interesting contrast to the main NYC setting.
I wonder what the meaning of the closing narration is.
At timestamp 3:01.
John Dehner is a common character quite well known from the radio days, specifically, the Gunsmoke radio program starring William Conrad
Alan's dismissal of superstitious beliefs reminds me of my dad's views of the subject. The title of this episode does work here because New York City is a concrete jungle.
This kinda reminds me of Tintin comic (and cartoon) seven crystal balls
I mix this up in my mind with a movie called Night of the Eagle (or Burn Witch Burn). Both involve a skeptic getting involved with real magic.
Aka "the call of Kipitu"
I wonder if Mr King borrowed from this episode for his hedge animals for the Overlook hotel
This is one episode I would never want to be caught in.
NURSE JESSIE BREWER! (Emily McLaughlin.) I grew up watching General Hospital with my mother from around age 5 to 18! I'm always bad about recognizing actors, especially when they're much younger than when I first knew them. But I thought it was her right away then looked it up on IMDB to confirm. As to the ep, it was so-so for me. I found it slow moving and predictable. You knew that guy was toast. It was just a matter of when and how. Don't get me wrong, it's all beautifully done. There was just no real suspense for me. I didn't feel emotionally connected in the character either, so I guess that's part of it. I didn't hate him, but I didn't love him either.
Not gonna lie I kept getting distracted by the music and trying to hum Thorntail Hollow
But dayum is this episode good or what
It seems rare to see someone who was perceived as innocent die such a horrific death. It's especially dark for the era this aired that the character was a young attractive woman.
You realize many of these episodes were filmed at a time where black and brown people were murdered on the regular, right? Innocent attractive young women too.
What you meant to say, was you weren't used to innocent young attractive WHITE women dying a horrific death.
Actor John Dehner was a very tall man as I recall
Who does the voodoo that you do so well?
I will say they probably blew the budget on the lion, but I will say it is a beautiful lion
One of my all-time favorite movies! Also to give you an idea how much further 20 bucks used to be able to get you and why it was a big deal he offered it to that homeless guy to walk him through the park that's the equivalent of like $100 today with inflation
I always wondered why the flame from the cigarette lighter went so high 😮
@@jeffreyberkin-ez3uh probably modified to have a gas feed instead of a standard lighter
Nice
What a creepy episode. 😳
Alan should have never shot Alisha in The Lonely. Lol
It came back to haunt him 😂
I Love your videos!!! Also Tamera is adorable and your crew are soo talented! I would really like you to review Hulu's Hellraiser and for Nostalgoween review the Nightmare on Elm Street Series. Not that my opinion matters but I think I'd really value your analysis on the titles.
Hey Nostalgia critic, do a review of the movie PCU
Notice how you never see the lion actually roar. It was a tame circus lion actually.
How did you think the lion got into Alan's house eating Doris?
It's like Jumanji without dice.
He forgot he was playing Jumenji.
The street scenes kept me on the edge of my chair. Also enjoyed the banter in the boardroom by the xenophobic men. Even today Cruise ships and many buildings don't have a 13th level, superstition being there were 13 people at the last supper in Christian beliefs, Jesus then was crucified, which of course depicted 13 as an unlucky number. I'd like to know the details of getting the lion to pounce toward the camera
I like how he points out the hypocrisy of the other characters mocking superstition but then he reveals theirs. It's subtle but it is almost a racial comment saying "Oh African black superstitions are to be laughed at but our American white ones are okay?"
I have to admit that I crack up at the lion on the bed. We have cats and they love to take ownership of beds, couches, whatever they consider theirs. The lion looks like no matter how big they are, a cat is still a cat. "Bro, this is my bed now!"
The more you mentioned creepy animal sounds, the more I’m reminded of getting off work at Kings Dominion going through Jungle X-Petition when all the guests have gone and it’s just loud buzzing flies and an angry cat yowling constantly
I never seen this episode but it has a lot in common with Jumanji
When the curse effects the cab driver and the wife.
two people that did nothing wrong.
Kind of like the supposed story of God killing all the first born sons of Egypt.
does this episode even really have a twist to it???
