I was diagnosed at the age of 5 after a very bad fall where I landed on my right side - on the kidney. Since I was constantly sick with high fevers I was being admitted to hospitals frequently so they decided to operate by age 8 (1968). The surgery took 8 hours, my mom had to donate 3 pints of blood to be used to replace my blood loss and the incision (andscar that was left) started at my hip bone and went up in a half-moon shape to my shoulder blade. It was huge and I was hospitalized for 45 days. Luckily I did not lose my kidney. By the time I went home from the hospital I weighed about 45 or 50 lbs., and was very weak. The surgery didn't eliminate the issue though. I continued to have infections regularly. At age 12 my tonsils were removed and as if by magic I never had another infection or UTI again. Maybe it was coincidental. The only times that I've had kidney infections after that were when I took hard falls. The last one was in my mid 20's. I'm 62 now and have never had any more issues.
I was born with this and my kidney was removed when I was in my 30's. Mine wasn't picked up when I was born, I was classed as a mard baby and left to cry. Once I went onto solid food as a child the crying stopped. When I went for a beer as an older teen the agony I experienced was similar to a kick between the legs. Every time I went for a beer it was the same. I stopped drinking. Eventually picked up with a pyelogram after passing blood, by which time the kidney was working at 3% and had to be removed. After various testing it was detected that he has reflux in left kidney and some narrowing of ureter in right kidney. Righ kidney is dilated moderately. What can be done?? Is there any chances that he might get cured as he grows
i have the same case for my daughter. We undergo lab test, VCUG and it stated there that she had bilateral reflux, the doctor suggested us to have an operation for her. Our Pedia also told us that propelaxis alone is not enough to prevent case.

Hi Abhi. The hydronephrosis if not due to reflux could be due to obstruction. If the obstruction is not significant (I usually get a MAG3 scan) then we can just follow up with ultrasound and see how it develops. Some hydronephrosis will resolve with time.

The question is if you left the kidney as it is, what will happen? ... with an obstruction and poor drainage, it will progressively worsen the right kidney function below the now 43%. With infection it may knock off the function even more. It seems like something needs to be done. A permanent solution which will allow him to have reasonable functioning right kidney for the rest of his life, is surgery, so I agree with your surgeon. Other options such as stents etc are often temporary. Hope that helps, all the best.

Each situation is different. You need to see what is causing the hydronephrosis. Reflux or obstruction. Then the flow studies if it’s obstruction. Only if there is significant obstruction on the renal scan then surgery may be indicated. You need to discuss with your doctor.

Hello Ms Suraya. Congrats on your baby. Let’s see how the hydronephrosis progresses, your obstetrician will do regular scans for this and advice. Let’s see what that shows. If it’s safe to carry on till baby delivers then we can wait and scan baby once born. There is little you can do yourself other than pray for good progress.

@@azeebahanum9652 It resolved on its own as my son gets older. We did sonography a few times to take notes on the growth of the renal pelvis. But, now he's completely fine and doing magic.
Congratulations! Some babies can have hydronephrosis however if it’s mild there is nothing to be done during the pregnancy. Just wait till your baby is born and after 3to 4 days do an ultrasound scan of babies kidneys, this as a baseline to see how things progress. A good number of babies with mild hydronephrosis do improve by itself and the hydronephrosis may disappear. For now enjoy your pregnancy and all the best with the delivery.

@@bhagyashreemondal2114 when needed then the surgery should be done. On balance, the condition should be serious enough to need surgery as a newborn. However surgery for neonates is pretty safe, this day and age.

do not worry. my 50days old baby with 45mm pelvis diameter got operated laproscpy 3days ago. doctor may suggest drops for a months and see whether any improvement, if the pelvis diameter gets keep increasing, doctor will suggest surgery.

La operacion fue bien grande y se demoro 8 horas pero ahora dicen que es mucho mas sencillo y el/la paciente regresa a su casa el dia siguiente. Si usted esta en Cuba no sabria que decirle porque mi familia vino a los EEUU 10 dias despues de la fecha en que me dieron de alta. En los EEUU cualquier Nefrologo Pediatrico la puede aconsejar y diagnosticar; quizas no la tengan que operar. Mi operacion no resovio mi condicion y en el 1972 me sacaron las amigdalas. Eso fue lo que sano mi condicion. No se si fue coincidencia pero en el Miami Children's Hospital fue donde fuy tratada durante mucho tiempo. Le deceo lo mejor para su nieta. Las enfermedades renales dan mucho asco a los olores y a las comidas. Muchos vomitos tambien. Yo casi no comia y todo me daba asco y vomitos. Estaba bien flaquita y muy desnutrida y la situacion en Cuba en esos tiempos ya estaba mala con mucha falta de alimentos.

Hi Sir... It was very informative... My baby is 16 months old with Hydronephrosis ranging between 18 to 22mm in the left kidney... Both MCUG and EC scan tested negative.... What will be the further evaluation and treatment options?
Hi Abhi. The hydronephrosis if not due to reflux could be due to obstruction. If the obstruction is not significant (I usually get a MAG3 scan) then we can just follow up with ultrasound and see how it develops. Some hydronephrosis will resolve with time.

The question is if you left the kidney as it is, what will happen? ... with an obstruction and poor drainage, it will progressively worsen the right kidney function below the now 43%. With infection it may knock off the function even more. It seems like something needs to be done. A permanent solution which will allow him to have reasonable functioning right kidney for the rest of his life, is surgery, so I agree with your surgeon. Other options such as stents etc are often temporary. Hope that helps, all the best.

Each situation is different. You need to see what is causing the hydronephrosis. Reflux or obstruction. Then the flow studies if it’s obstruction. Only if there is significant obstruction on the renal scan then surgery may be indicated. You need to discuss with your doctor.

Let’s see how the hydronephrosis progresses, your obstetrician will do regular scans for this and advice. Let’s see what that shows.
If it’s safe to carry on till baby delivers then we can wait and scan baby once born.
There is little you can do yourself other than pray for good progress.

My son is 3.5 month old and he's detected with mild hydronephrosis in right kidney with renal pelvis maximum AP diameter Renal pelvis is 17 mm, suspicious faint echoes noted Within dilated Pelvicalyceal system. No evident dilation ureter noted.

Congratulations! Some babies can have hydronephrosis however if it’s mild there is nothing to be done during the pregnancy. Just wait till your baby is born and after 3to 4 days do an ultrasound scan of babies kidneys, this as a baseline to see how things progress. A good number of babies with mild hydronephrosis do improve by itself and the hydronephrosis may disappear. For now enjoy your pregnancy and all the best with the delivery.

There is no real minimum age. Once it’s a significant problem risking the long term function of the kidney, we tend to take action.
Newborn baby surgery is safe

do not worry. my 50days old baby with 45mm pelvis diameter got operated laproscpy 3days ago. doctor may suggest drops for a months and see whether any improvement, if the pelvis diameter gets keep increasing, doctor will suggest surgery.
