  • With these 7 protection mods your CRF250L or CRF300L will survive most crashes. I had my two biggest crashes to date with these protective mods installed and in both cases, I was able to ride on and get home.
    All the mods are based on real life experiences - behind every mod is a crash that has led to some kind of damage. I hope this video helps you in making the right choices for your CRF250L or CRF300L.

    My son just broke his leg when he squished it under the bike - not saying the crash bar would have stopped it, but it wouldn't have made it worse! Thank you!

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад +3

      I doubt the crash bar would have prevented that, you only get like 5 centimeters extra, but it could save your levers more often than not. Sorry to hear about your son’s leg. Hope he heals up soon! There are crash bars that might give you more room but if your son is into offroading, I’d recommend a proper set of knee braces. I have the Leatt X Hybrid Pro. They cost a pretty penny but really do seem to offer good protection. All the best!

    They do indicators that you just plug in , when your off-roading you take them out , pop in the plugs to keep debris out of the sockets and when your back on the road just pop them back in .
    No more broken indicators .

    It's quite funny. I have a 2014 250L and I have a acerbis skid plate, acerbis frame guards (cheap and worth it, trust me) a xitomer radiator guard, double take mirrors, an amazon headlight guard and a JFG racing chain guard. I can't remember the name of the headlight guard but honestly these upgrades are all I need. I live in Nevada where the roads are essentially rocky washes and I feel 100% capable and I know my equipment can take crashes too. I fully recommend everything I listed

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve wondered about those frame guards! My boot rubs the frame quite a bit so I’m looking into a solution for that. I looked at the Acerbis frame guards but read that they can also cause damage due to sand and mud getting behind the guard and scratching the paint. Any experience with that? Thanks for watching!

    • @Chris-yy5pj

      @@FineLine-Mediathe guards are great. They are really solid plastic/rubber material to dampen impacts. I highly recommend them. And I've never had any problems with sand or dirt or mud getting in them. They have little ridges on them that make a C shape on the frame so that it protects the skinny sides Aswell. If there ever was anything that got Into it I'm sure a spray with a garden hose would clean it out lol

    Good video, thanks.
    One mod that is important is guards for the clutch cover and for the oil side.
    The Honda engine covers are made from cast aluminum that is soft and easily pierced by the gear lever (I learned the hard way) or by a sharp rock.
    I couldn't afford the RG Plastic guard covers so I bought cheap metal covers from China that glue on and work great.

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  7 месяцев назад

      That’s a good tip, thanks! I did notice how soft the OEM covers are. They’re completely scratched up from my boots as well. Others also pointed out that for this reason, it might be better to keep a soft gear lever that bends in case of a crash. Thanks for watching!🙏

    Great informative video. One word of advice, though: You gear shifter modification can hurt more than it protects, as it can twist the selector spline and break the casing. Better get a casing side reinforcement and keep the soft selector, I think (but am not sure). Best regards

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for your comment, appreciate it! That’s a valid point you’re making. Someone else also said it’s better to have a soft one, so maybe I’m wrong about it. I was personally thinking it wouldn’t hurt the engine as quickly because it won’t bend as easily, but that maybe that will result in other issues. I’ll look into it some more. Thanks for watching!🙏

      @@FineLine-Media I think you could actually modify the new shifter to add a notch like they do for brake and clutch handles, basically an intentional weak point so that during a massive impact it would shear clean off instead of transferring the load onto the splines and potentially doing massive damage.

    Honestly, it just seems like your tires are the cause for your crashes. Have you tried the Dunlop D606's? The plastic skidplates are supposed to let the bike slide over rocks instead of taking the hit like aluminum skidplates. I also run aluminum, but who really knows.

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад

      I’m running the D606 ;). With a Pirelli Rallycross upfront. I think a lot of my crashes just come from lack of skill, but the only way to get better is to try so the bike will likely take some more hits in the future.😅 I think the main problem with the skid plates is that they don’t create enough of a space barrier on the sides. That’s why I like the crash bar so much. It takes the first impact about 10-15cm away from the engine and other parts. The skidplate is great for bottom protection though and I do like the idea of a plastic one. Sounds like that should indeed slide over thing easier. Thanks for your comment!🙏

    Best investment I've made for crash protection was getting rid of the stock tires on my 300l. Next to that, hand guards are a must, then skid plate and radiator guard. Thinking of getting a rear rack like that to make it easier to lift the bike out of the bush 😁

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  5 месяцев назад +1

      I’m not 100% sure because I haven’t corrected my speedo yet, but I reach up to 137kph on the speedo. I think it translates into just over 120kph in reality. That’s what it feels like anyway.
      Going through the gears is fine, shorter, but not too short. Offroad it makes a pretty big difference. I was thinking about 43 or 45 in the rear. I feel 43 was the right choice. Although I haven’t tried 45 yet, I think that combo will be going through the gears just a bit too fast based on my experience with the 43. 42 in the rear seems like a popular option, but I was really looking for a big change offroad and felt like 43 would be the minimum. I would be more tempted to try a 44 than notch down to 42.
      I ride mostly offroad, although I sometimes have to ride 2 hours of highway to get to the best trails. With the 43, the bikes sits around 8,000rpm in 6th with the throttle fully opened. Hope this helps!

    Is your crash bar surviving the crashes or is it bending?

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Alexander, it's holding up pretty well except for the little brand name tags coming off. That being said, if I were to shop for a crash bar now, I'd probably try a few other ones. This one is nice and compact, but I would have preferred it extending out like 1 or 2 cm more on each side.

      @FineLine-Media OK, thanks for the reply... Holding up pretty well is certainly better than being rubbish. I have just bought some lower crashbars, so I was wondering how they go.! Thanks again for the reply .!

    Tell me - is this bike for me I am 5,7?

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад

      I’m 1,74 meter and have no issues with the bike. 5,7 is about 1,70 though, so you’re a bit shorter than me. It could work but also depends on your inseam, if you really want to be able to put two feet down etc. Best is to try it at a local dealer. They do make a LS version now specially for shorter people. You can also lower the original with an extra link so there are plenty of options to make it work. Good luck!👍

      Don’t listen to this guy. But if you ride mostly off road, a competition 250R will be 100 lbs lighter and have twice the horsepower. An 85R of the same year will eat a 250L for breakfast.

    I’m just gonna buy a used CRF250R to ride in the dirt and keep my CRF300L for the street.
    The “L” sucks in the dirt anyways and I want to keep it scuff free. (Like a street bike)
    It will never compare to a competition dirt bike no matter how much money I put in it, so why try?
    This way I’ll have the best of both worlds, a trail and track bike for the park and a street legal bike for around town.

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I totally get that. I love my L but it will never be as good as a dedicated offroader. The CRF250F also seems quite nice but with the stretches of highway I have to do to get to the trails that’s not really an option. For now this bike ticks a lot of boxes for me but I could see myself upgrading in the future. The 701 and 690 look quite nice too.

    • @FineLine-Media

      I bought it secondhand, new it costs about €100 here. It’s made in Germany so shipping is cheap. I do think there are better options if the price is that high. I wouldn’t mind if it would stick out 2cm more to either side. Any crashbar that creates a bit of space around your levers and engine will do fine. Bikers Bitz in Thailand had a nice one too. That might be cheaper for you? Good luck and thanks for watching!🙏

    Dat bagagerek... mmmm dr is een reden he waarom enduro mannen zoiets juist niet monteren.. Als je je motor denkt beter op te kunnen rapen.. Dan kan ik enkel zeggen dat je dat verkeerd doet.. Buiten dat om.. Dat rek is een mega grote verlenger. Je subframe zal daardoor aanzienlijk sneller krom worden bij een ''goede'' crash.
    Enkel voor echt het reizen dan is zoiets wel vrijwel een pre. Maar een enduro rijder reisd niet met hun motor.
    Wel een mooi machine wel hoor.. Vraag me alleen af hoeveel power dat hij heeft. Maar ook dat is net wat je gewend bent. als je altijd MX gedaan hebt voelt dit soort motoren [maar ook bijv. klx drz en dat soort motoren] al snel traag en loom aan.. ik rij zelf met een 450. vind ik echt zeeer aangenaam zeker bij hillclimbs. die power trekt je vanzelf naar boven.

      Thanks! Motor ziet er sportiever uit dan dat ie is. Ik denk heel vergelijkbaar met een KLX. Miste tijdens de OTR Eindhoven wel wat pk'tjes in ieder geval. Had daar een stukje op een 2-takt Beta gereden van een vriend. Dat is een andere wereld.😂
      Interessant punt over het bagagerek, zo had ik er nog niet over nagedacht. Ik rij een beetje van alles, wat TET, wat trails in Belgie, laatst mn eerste OTR gedaan, wat crossdagen gedaan, en wat motortripjes idd. Had 'm geinstalleerd voor een weekje TET Slovenie. Daar kwam die heel goed van pas. Raap m'n motor wel beter op tegenwoordig. Ook erg veel oefening gehad😉

      @@deeno_berlin those look pretty nice and more affordable too! I just installed a set of bar-mounted mirrors though. Acerbis handguards are garbage. Do yourself a treat and get a set of Zetas. Aluminum pedals are for racing. Steel bends... and bends back. Aluminum breaks.

      @@FineLine-Media I think the Acerbis are made of butter. The Zetas paired with the triple tree mount are the pinnacle of handguards. 👍 So glad I went that route. I went ahead and drilled and retapped the bar end weights for the standard 8 mm and got high grade bolts.

      @@phantomshtter I don’t have the triple tree mount but just looked it up, that looks interesting indeed! I think I’ll keep them mounted to the bar for now but this may be a nice upgrade in the future. There’s always room for one more mod😉

      @phantomshtter 9 месяцев назад

      @FineLine-Media if you wanna free up bar space for other mounts like navi and such those mounts are great. Above all though significantly strengthen and protect the entire bar setup and rigidity. Pricey couple of brackets though🤑 I hesitated on them quite a while. Might not work with some high or wide bars or riser setups. They have a fair amount of adjustability.

    Id rather have a bendable shiften that a stiff shifter that can damage my internals.

    • @FineLine-Media
      @FineLine-Media  11 месяцев назад

      Totally understand. I first thought about just replacing the shifter but had the same worry you have. That’s actually the reason I decided to also add the crash bar. I hope that with this set up, the gear shifter won’t take a hit too quickly, but in case it does, it will be able to handle the impact better. If that’s really the case is another thing of course. We did have quite a bit of trouble bending the old one back.
