Great video! Important to mention: The Golden Pass Express nowadays runs with an MOB locomotive on the 1 meter rail network from Monteux to Zweisimmen. There, the bogies of the passenger coaches change to the normal gauge (1435mm). This procedure takes only a few seconds. After that, the journey continues with a standard gauge BLS locomotive.
Nice viewing. I really love old good livery. And it's just like British that you chose tea without hesitation. (Seeing relationship with 南海電車)なんだこれは・・・たまげたなあ。
Very fine report! (Note: the cars are from Stadler, but the bogies from Alstom). I was fascinated to watch the bogies being slowly widened or narrowed in Zweisimmen - a matter of 2 minutes. The whole technology is very new, and not all the trains have been delivered yet. The BLS not only fears damage to its switches - such damage has already occurred. Hence the resort to changing trains at Zweisimmen. In addition to the new "gpx", MOB runs most long-distance connections between Montreux and Zweisimmen with various special trains: Panoramic, Belle Epoque (in the Art Nouveau retro look) - and this without any surcharge! These trains are marked in the timetable.
As I hike in this region every now and then, I‘ve already taken all sorts of trains - including, as a child, the old 3000series from the 1940s which needed two locos for long through trains. (This train is still depicted at a wall at Montreux station.) Aditionally trains pulled by the brawny 1930s double locomotive and the powerful and racy double railcar from the 1960s (or 1970s?). To say nothing of the steam loco journey from Zweisimmen to Chamby: They had to bring back the loco and wagons after steam days in the Simme valley - and I happened to be there exactly in the right moment 😁😁. My eyes are still half blind from the smoke in the tunnels…
Thank you for this great video. The Prestige Class seating is truly superb. What a shame that the BLS are finding fault with the MOB gauge changing bogies, and one can but hope the issues will quickly be resolved.
I can also recommend the RhB from Chur to Arosa. A amazing train with the train driving through Chur like a tram and the climbing all the way up to Arosa.
A review of the spectacular BLS line (Bern -) Neuchâtel - La Chaux-de-Fonds would be cool for several reasons: The great views, the MIKA trains also run on that line, the unique stop with direction change at Chambrelien, the line will get replaced with a more direct line mostly through tunnels (unsurprisingly called "Ligne direct"). Possibly the journey can be connected with the Le Locle-Les Brenets line that will be replaced by a guided bus or the CJ line to Glovelier (with the perfect timetable synchronisation at Le Noirmont thanks to a long stop of the branch to Glovelier at Saignelégier).
I rode the Golden Pass recently - twice! - once to Zweisimmen and then a second time only to Montbovon where I changed to the train for Gruyeres, a much more scenic option than the 'normal' route via Palézieux and only 10 minutes longer. I think you missed a trick however by not getting, or featuring, a train using the Belle Époque carriages. A step back in time to the, pardon the pun, Golden Age of train travel (if today isn't classified as a new golden age as well), the carriages are absolutely stunning and while not matching the new trainsets in comfort make up for it in spades with character. The Prestige class on the new trains is totally overpriced, especially considering you can't even [currently] ride them all the way to Interlaken. The Belle Époque carriages also have the distinction that second class is utterly indistinguishable from first class. I had to check that I hadn't wandered into the wrong section by mistake because I could not tell the difference. Maybe there is a different meal service or something, I don't know, but the interior was exactly the same. Save loads by buying a second class on the Belle Époque and riding in the equivalent of first! The trains are also back to running on a hourly schedule. Purchasing e a point-to-point ticket, such as one might if using the half-fare pass, allows the freedom to hop off the train at any station and then grab another one when it comes through. I would contend that the Rochers-de-Naye railway, also leaving/arrving Montreux, is more spectacular than the Golden Pass. Being a cog railway it reaches high altitudes very quickly: 45 minutes after leaving Montreux you are at 2000 metres with stunning views over the Bernese Alps to the Eiger and Jungfrau. A must-do if in the area.
I also chose the Belle Époque carriages which are very limited service daily, I believe there is one in the morning and one in the evening only. This was back in 2017.

You’ve now done 1 of the three big panoramic trains of Switzerland. Where are the Glacier Express and Bernini Express? Great job though, just missing the lead carriages they used to have where you sat in front of the driver for that service.
So, if I understood correctly, they installed some sort of gauge changing device (similar to the one that Talgo uses?), but it doesn't work properly and therefore isn't in use. Is this the case?
Yes and no, no and no: - yes, there is a gauge changing system. - no, it's not like Patentes Talgo, but way more complicated, as the gap to change is much further (almost twice of what Talgo does), and also the elevation of the coaches is changed in the process to deal with different platform heights and general clearances. Google for 'EV18 rail boogie' for detailed information. It's a nice piece of technology😎 - no, this system works fine, so... - no, it's not the gauge switching system itself that caused the interruption of services. It seems that as we have not only two different gauges but rather two completely different specifications, there is a hidden issue with the shape/tolerances of the wheels, especially their interaction with standard gauge frogs and adjacent guard rails on switches. Call it some teething problems🤷♂️
Getting off at any station: certainly, but in this case you would lose your seat reservation. If you already know when or with which next train you intend to continue your journey, you should make as many reservations as there are intermediate stops you intend to make. Be that as it may, in Switzerland it is almost impossible not to find a seat
I might have missed it. How long is the train journey please? Which other Countries are available Panoramic trains are available when you arrive? Thank you for the invaluable info.
The real reason for the delay in running through onto BLS was the problem with the sliding bogie technology (ala Spanish Talgo style). Also, I was disappointed to note that the Prestige seats do not exactly line up with the windows, so your seat only had about 2/3rd's of a window to see out of.
The seats are lined up with the windows. The reason why the window starts "behind" the seat is because the seats can be rotated the other way around and then this way will still align with the window.
@@some-online-dude So in other words, it's pure luck whether you have a full window depending on whether the seat has been turned? The seats are not lined up with the windows (see 3min 54sec). The only winners are the first 2+1 forward facing seats which have a full window on either side. If the inward facing seats are "reversed" then they will still have the pillars to partially block their view. I suspect the real problem is the depth of the Prestige seat (from front to back) which is too great and a compromise has been reached.
@@harri2626 No, ffs... The seat is placed that way so that no matter which way it is turned, you get a full window width's worth of window. That window is also wider than a normal window for exactly this reason.
I fell in love with Switzerland when I visited a few weeks ago but it drained my wallet. I would love to know how to live there and prosper financially. Beautiful country and beautiful trains.
The simple answer is that wages are correspondingly high. A grocery store worker earns something like 4000 Swiss francs per month, which is about 4500 USD. (Not that poverty does not exist in Switzerland - it does.)
Gotta say the price was pretty decent. It’s about the price of a first class seat between Stockholm and Gothenburg (though a meal is included in that price).
You forgot to mention the third railway in the Montreux Station- to the Rocher de Naye on 80 cm gauge…it’s a cog railway. Château d’Oex is the home of the Piccard -Family August- Jacques & Bertrand. A worldwide balloon meeting is held once a year. Plans exist for the new trains to complete the journey In Luzern, when the technical issues are solved…
Was thinking about a summer trip, after ridicules high price for flight - just 1.5h prices starts from £150 one way in EasyJet O_o, to staying one night in Montreux £200, train from Geneva £58… and then I stop checking XD But lovely video 2 watch :]
Our guests from Luxury Travel Switzerland visit Montreux and Interlaken on their 10-day luxury tour through whole Switzerland. GoldenPass Express train is unique and luxury. The guests love it very much… ❤
When is the “end of the winter season” in this area? March? April? May? I am planning a rail trip through Switzerland and would like to see a mixture like you experienced in this video. When was this filmed?
I'm surprised this train still hasn't gotten regulatory approval for dual-gauge through running. It was literally built to change gauge from 1,000mm to 1,435mm but as you said, BLS and other entities refuse to allow its service.
I suggest you try Doğu Ekspress, departures from Ankara riding all the way to the Kars, located in the northeast of Turkiye. It's a 1.310 km journey that takes about 25 hours. Btw, you can use a polarizing filter to manage reflections when shooting from windows. There are also clip-on options for smartphones.
You have to be careful with polarising filters. They only work at certain angles to the sun and glass, and certain types of window (with multiple layers) can cause a rainbow effect. They can be useful, but they can also completely ruin your shots if you're not aware of this.
update 1: As from June 10 (2023), the gpx runs again directly from Montreux to Interlaken. update 2: from the same date, 3 additional gpx will run - but till July only Montreux-Zweisimmen, where one has to change trains.
Great Video 😎 Pretty sad, that they have the technology now, to switch the gages, make it a direkt line and all those new locomotives and carriages that would support that, but they can't use any of it because of BLS... 😕 (Would've been nice to include that in the video too 😉)
To be fair; it's not that BLS is like stubborn or something. They indeed had damaged switches, or the frog of it to be precise. And it is pure luck there was no derailment. The cause is still to be determined, but the issue seems to be, that we do not only have a different gauge, but two totally different specifications (in contrast to standard gauge vs. spanish gauge, which are way more common to each other). Especially the tolerances and sizes of the gap between the (regular gauge) stock rails and the guard rails and how they interfere with the wheels, which also need to fit the meter gauge specifications, are the main focus of ongoing investigations.
The GPX was refused by the end of febuary by BLS beacause they noticed abnormal wear and tear on the tracks, mainly on the switches. Investigations are still in progress. During test runs no abnormal wheel spacing could be detected. On the MOB tracks the train is still running, but they noticed the problem too. I heard that the train is currently allowed to drive only 20 kph over switches. Currently they're talking about a renewed introduction in October, but from my experience and reviewing the progress they've made... i guess next timetable change seems more realistic. However, this is not the first time that BLS has been unsure about this train. Shortly after the train was introduced, it was only allowed to run at max. 80 kph because they had uncertainties with the brake type.
ofc it was awesome but will be better if u be able to watch toward but not only by sides . or will be amazing if locomotive will be behind the all vagons and this prestige vagon first
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have reserved my seats on Prestige Class as well but wanted to know if Swiss Pass is applicable for the actual tickets of prestige class?
Nice Video. Seen several of your videos. Could you please try out Konkan Railway journey (India) in MONSOON season especially Aug or Sep months. @@SuperalbsTravels Thanks for your reply. But it's totally different in the monsoons. I have travelled both in dry season & the monsoon. Only issues you could face are train delays.
This is in the video and the description. Also, you can find panorama trains in many countries, such as USA, Japan, and Kyrgyzstan.
The real reason for the delay in running through onto BLS was the problem with the sliding bogie technology (ala Spanish Talgo style). Also, I was disappointed to note that the Prestige seats do not exactly line up with the windows, so your seat only had about 2/3rd's of a window to see out of.
prestige class and they cannot get the seats to line up with the windows!! something else the japanese routinely get right even on regular trains.
Also, these luxury tourist resorts are also incredible expensive for Swiss people. Its not like every Swiss goes to work daily with the Golden Pass.
@@nilnurium231Woulnd say incredibly expensive, but its definitely up there.
15:30 yes I would love to see the film from the ordinary train.
Very nice
You are going to a lot of troubles calling the Leman, lake Geneva
Yes ❤
Amazing views and amazing prices 😂
It was beautiful! 😍
Can you tell which is best, most interesting, way to go by train from Paris to Munich or Innsbruck?
MOB stands for “Montreux Oberland Bahn”.
I'm surprised this train still hasn't gotten regulatory approval for dual-gauge through running. It was literally built to change gauge from 1,000mm to 1,435mm but as you said, BLS and other entities refuse to allow its service.
We need scotrail HST first class review
Montreau was a home to Freddy Mercury Queen’s singer. There is a statue in his honor there.
Have all dining cars disappeared in Swiutzerland?
Great Video 😎
Pretty sad, that they have the technology now, to switch the gages, make it a direkt line and all those new locomotives and carriages that would support that, but they can't use any of it because of BLS... 😕
(Would've been nice to include that in the video too 😉)
It is included isn’t it?
Very unusual indeed. Hope things work out else it will be a shame if the train has to run under restricted conditions or will have to be modified.
ofc it was awesome but will be better if u be able to watch toward but not only by sides . or will be amazing if locomotive will be behind the all vagons and this prestige vagon first
The other direction will allow this, with the loco position changing en-route.
oo thats great@@SuperalbsTravels
Yes please, give us a review on the Ic2000/2020!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have reserved my seats on Prestige Class as well but wanted to know if Swiss Pass is applicable for the actual tickets of prestige class?
As long as your pass is first class, this will be fine! If not, I'd speak to staff at the station, as you may be able to just pay the difference. :)
@@SuperalbsTravels Thanks for the info.

Nice Video. Seen several of your videos. Could you please try out Konkan Railway journey (India) in MONSOON season especially Aug or Sep months. From Mumbai to Goa or till Mangalore in Vistadome Coaches. The scenery at that time in Konkan is one of the most beautiful in the world. In 2015, I had travelled in a regular AC compartment during the day. I was so mesmerized by the scenic beauty that I was standing/sitting at the door from Morning till sunset, only taking washroom breaks & i want to do it again.
Thank you! 😁
I have already done Konkan Railway in dry season... ruclips.net/video/Glq6WY2CT0w/видео.html
@@SuperalbsTravels Thanks for your reply. But it's totally different in the monsoons. I have travelled both in dry season & the monsoon. Only issues you could face are train delays. The Greenery, the pleasant cool Breeze, small streams that comes alive. The small railway stations covered with trees & fresh grass, unlike the main stations which are covered & commercialized. It's like English weather minus the bitter chill.
@@ashwindhareshwar469 That sounds great actually! I'll have to consider it. :) Thank you.
