      Legit, he's the only person outside of a family member dying that I really felt upset about. COB were the first "extreme" metal band I got into after the usual Iron Maiden/Metallica thing. This band holds a special place in my heart, and always will. Nice to see Janne doing things again with Warmen, they have Petri Lindroos on vocals and guitar which is cool

He seemed genuinely happy with her and if you read his last interview from December, he was excited about future and had been spending some quiet time in 2020 (like many of us). I wish his partner would have tried harder to keep him away from alcohol, but I mean.. An addict is an addict. He was a grown man who made his own decisions.. I don’t think anyone could have necessarily done anything more. He was loved and had a lot of people who cared about him.

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  3 года назад +24

      The sound itself may be original, as in they didn't edit anything to fix wrong notes and stuff, but professional DVD releases like this are always mixed and mastered afterwards. In the credits of the DVD itself, they have mixing (Mikko Karmila) and mastering (Mika Jussila) engineers listed along with someone separate who did the live recording (Hans Ostlund).

      I have seen cob many times in the 2000s and tbh. they never convinced me live. (I like their studio work a lot!)
      Alexi used to say that the drinking etc. esp. in this time never affected the performances, but thats not true !
      What I have heard about the last years is that alexi was more professional on tour and that the quality improved. but just hearsay, I havent seen them for a decade.
      we all know that drinking and excessive behavior is part of the whole thing. but I think that artists also have the responsibility "to be in shape" for a good performance. it´s a thin line and cob is, i dont like to say it, one of the few bands I have in my mind that crossed it more than 1-2 times.

    • @metalftw9652
      @metalftw9652 3 года назад +3

      @@TankTheTech yeah that lead in the chorus is difficult to get down on it’s own. I say that as someone who’s trying to get the string skipping down at that speed, I can’t imagine how much it would’ve taken to get that same part down while singing.

    • @AgeofJP
      @AgeofJP 3 года назад +6

      @@metalftw9652 the most insane thing is that most of his solos are still leagues above in difficulty...once you can play the chorus you just have to play it so often that you basically play it by muscle memory, then get the vocals down individually and combining the two at this point isn't that hard. It's just a matter of time you have to dedicate to every song individually and it is generally only dependant on your confidence. Also a great way to get better with that is by simply not looking at your fretboard (unless you jump like 10 frets)...compared to playing and singing this chorus, the first solo took me like two more years of learning completely new techniques and developing the left hand dexterity required to play at that speed. And even now it would take me weeks if not months if I were to learn another solo of his, the stuff he wrote and performed when he was 17 years old...I'm so sad he's gone but he left a great legacy and created thousands of new guitarists. I've spotted many younger bands where the lead guitarist plays an ESP Alexi signature model and that's when I know... "One of us"

I would put Alexi's instrument domination 1st and Marco's 2nd, but vice versa with vocals: Marco 1st, Alexi 2nd. As bands and genres, I always preferred COB, but with Marco's training and talent as opposed to the screaming vocals...Marco.

    I was soooo waiting this, thank you Tank from bottom of my heart 😍
    My first touch, as a teenager, with metal music was Stone (Roope's ex-band). Stone is one of the biggest reason why Finland have so many metal bands. I was musically a little pit lost between ages 16-26. After that I founded my musical interest again, it was mostly metal and classical. I was over 30 years when I founded COB 🤩
    Now I'm almost 50 years old and the death of no other celebrity has touched me so much than Alexi's death. First 2 weeks I cryied every day... And here we go again 😭
    Even I'm from Finland, saw them only once on stage, precious memory 😊 and I have this dvd, it's one thing what "I will take with me if house is burning".
    I know some people criticized these "reactions", but I don't feel the same. As a fan, I see if some reactions are false. Atleast for me, in this pain of mine, it was great relief to see and hear people who shared their memories of Alexi. And found out how much people appreciated him, not only as a musician, but also as a person who was so funny, humble and warm hearted. He was so down to earth. Always had time for fans and shared his passion and knowledge to a novice musicians.
    He left us way too soon, but I think he lived his life as fullest. Made his dreams come true and still was his own self. Some people criticized him earlier how he changed their music during years. What I loved about COB that they was evolving all the time, always something different. One thing what make me even more sad, is that their last album Hexed is one of my favorite. How much awesome music Alexi took with him, we will never going to know that...
    Hugs 😍

    Alexi never played LTD ALX600. He was photographed with them and may have shot a few promo videos with the LTD models for promotional purposes / endorsement obligations. Live he only played Custom shop ESP 1000s. The LTD models were a completely different shape than the real signature ESPs. His signature was too similar to the Jackson Rhoads shape which Jackson had a copywrite on so the LTD models and the ESP models made for the American market were closer to a king V shape than a Rhoads. He said unofficially he did not like them for that reason and I 10,000% agree.

It's still my favorite but others I love are "Chindren of Decadence", "If You Want Peace... Prepare For War", "Living Dead Beat", "Towards Dead End", "Blooddrunk" and "Everytime I Die". Would be cool to see reactions on them in due time ofc but that's not the underlying point of me mentioning them. The news didn't hit a soft spot for me due to being so new to the band as a fan but I understand what will be missed whenever I hear new music from them now. Back in the 90's CoB played Jackson guitars. One night their entire backline got stolen. Esp helped out and offered them to play on their gear. After that they signed a deal with esp.
    Henkka played Ltd f104 and 105. He has one with a rose inlay. Beautiful piece. I also started to play Ltd F104 in 2005 after I parted ways with scheckter.
    Alexi tho has an entire 600 custom line. Most are scythe models. I am almost certain the pinstripe is.
    Friend of mine collects them. He has 14 models of the alexi 600. As true metal heads we are we loved the pink one. Hahaha.
    But hey... This was hard to watch man. I also had a tough time when he passed cause CoB was important to me especially back then. They helped me through some rough times in my life.
    The friend I mentioned, he and I had a special bond with angels don't kill. We learned to play it and made a cover of it with the band I was in back then.

    Yooo I have a very similair experience with this band as you do bro', I was about 13 years when a buddy of mine made me listen to COB, I was "into" hiphop back then, and I absolutely hated it at first, I thought it was pure noise. Then about a year or 2 later, I was chilling at his place, and he had one of their CD's playing in the background. I went home that evening with CD's "Hatebreeder" through to "Are you dead yet?", and while it still took me a while to actually get used to the sound, they still ended up being the reason I started listening to metal. Even though I haven't really listened to them for a long time, I was still gutted when that same friend told me Alexi has passed away recently, they hold a special place in my heart :(

    If my band wasn't medieval themed, I'd 100% have a classic car on stage too, I loved that Alexi and I always had cars and guitars in common. I have a white Monte Carlo alot like his and I've played Bodom songs on my guitar sitting in that driver seat more times than I can count. Fuck I miss him. The last show I ever saw before the lockdowns were Children Of Bodom and it's going to remain my last show I ever attended until I can return to the stage myself.

    I like that the bands you mention at the start are all from the classical metal countries Sweden (In Flames), Finland (Children of Bodom) and Dimmu Borgir (Norway). Another thing I thought about was when you mentioned the keyboards, for me so is that also a way of showing to the crowd that they are actually doing something. I prefer a player that has it like that over something that is flat and sort of hidden.
    And once more, do a video with Ghost live!

    Even though I don't like Children of Bodom and never really enjoyed a single song from them, they still managed to take a place in my heart. Back in early 10-s I've been working in a local music web-media as a photographer. Sure, as the beginner I've been getting assigned to local artists or ones from neighbour countries, mostly in small venues with smaller audience. And the first show of really popular respected band in a huge concert hall I've been working on was Children of Bodom gig. Sure, my photos were not as great as they could've been cause again, it was my very first experience in such circumstances, but still this show is a sweet memory of mine.
    When Alexi died, I was thinking about reprocessing all the photos from that show, but unfortunately I've lost the original files, so all I've got is 900x600px pics. Still love them though.

    Anyway, you said you haven’t seen this show, so you definitely should take your time and see this whole gig, I think there is a complete playlist of the dvd (each song in a separate video, but from the same source including all the speaks and stuff) on YT in HQ. @@TankTheTech Sorry brother, didn't mean to be an asshole. You are one of the best YT at the moment! (Y)
      1. The guitar is ESP, not LTD. They sold that particular ESP Alexi signature -model for some time, but haven't since. The alexi LTD signature scythe is nowhere near the real ESP-lineup -version of it. Those two guitars really couldn't be more apart and he never played a single LTD-guitar on stage. He also had more sig-models over the years (like you said), but that's a whole different story. Alexi signature-ESPs (not LTDs) has been on the market over the years all the time.
      2. That mike is his signature thing and the guitar indeed has a battery and an on/off -switch. It is true that the passive EMG-HZ mic is basically on the guitar, but there’s a twist: the guitar has an EMG F-ALX -set, which icludes some EMG-mic (like I said, i think it’s basically EMG-HZ) and preamp! The pre-amp switch is located under the volume-knob, it’s very small and kinda impossible to notice from the video if you don’t know it’s there.
      I could say something about the differences in ESP CS USA and the original ESP CS in Japan (in whitch the og scythe is made in), but that might not be relevant in this case.
