Yeah it was a pretty stupid thing for the interviewer to ask Slash if he wore the hat and sunglasses so he wouldn't be recognized considering it's the most iconic image in rock history.
Slash said how he does it in public, sunglasses but no hat. He usually also looking down in the ground. It might be hard to imagine but he is a real shy guy private.
I interviewed Slash back in ‘98 for Gitarre & Bass and I have to honestly say he was the coolest dude I ever interviewed. Super friendly. Super down to earth.

This has basically happened to me. At the start of the pandemic I broke my regular glasses, only pair I have left is my prescription sunglasses. So I just got into the habit of wearing them all the time because I couldn’t get an optician appointment for new ones. Everyone has been claiming I’m doing it as part of a ‘cool new look’ but it’s not. I do admit I look cool 24/7 now though. I also have developed supreme night vision.

Not only the shredding but doing so on modern high tech guitars. Slash chose a Les Paul and a Marshal......when you listen to his solos they are carefully thought out, melodic and emotional. I can relate to him as far as Getting used to wearing sunglasses all the time. I've been wearing sunglasses since I was 6 years old. I live in Florida and is always fucking bright. I wear them non-stop to a point where I forget I even have them on. It's just so damn bright in this state. Not really complaining, probably better than a gloomy region like the Pacific Northwest.
I always wear sunglasses too for the same reason. Bright lights hurt my eyes, and looking cool is an added bonus minus the looking like a douche part that comes with it :(
