    Hi Jeremy and Claire , I hope things are going well for you both in Kampot , in looking at the roadways you have shown , I can't help but feel we are seeing what Siem Reap will eventually look like , or at least a close proximity , I do wonder about the effect upon pedestrian traffic , driving should vastly improve , but will it come with some sacrifice , improved roads have always brought more and more motorists here in the States , the results being far too much traffic congestion , the charm that once was , may be replaced with something far less appealing , only time will tell , have fun traveling about discovering hidden treasure , I really enjoy browsing in second hand stores , so much fun , stay safe , take care , and as always , Peace ...

    • @ForRiel

      Hi Brian, those Sakura stores are the best for nosing around and seeking out hidden treasure. They also have a lot of household objects that I don't recognise, so working out what they are used for is interesting. There are some mockups of how Siem Reap is going to look once the roads are done, and there are beautiful, wide footpaths. I think they realise that with it being a tourist destination, a lot of the visitors will be on foot. The drawings also had cycling lanes marked onto the roads. If these things eventuate it will be fantastic! Take are and stay safe!

      I can imagine how you would miss the markets. There's no way the atmosphere can be recreated outside of Cambodia. Sakura is good fun and I have purchased several treasures from there. Siem Reap has two branches to browse, but I always thought the furniture was expensive. Take care and thanks for watching.

    So fun exploring a new town. Enjoyed the video.
    Chomping at the bit to move to Cambodia. Just retired and
    about to bite the big "Q" of 2 weeks. Hopefully, it may change
    like in Thailand. 1 week would be very doable.
    Maybe in June, I will take the leap.
    See ya then

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  3 года назад

      Yeah I wouldn't enjoy 2 weeks in a hotel room, mainly because I am a fussy eater so I'd be living on instant noodles. Thailand announced that Phuket is opening to vaccinated travellers and there will be no quarantine. That's supposed to commence in July. Could be a good alternative while waiting for Cambodia to open.

    • @AutumninAsia
      @AutumninAsia 3 года назад

      @@ForRiel Thank you for that info. I do follow Thai news very closely and have been for a few years now. And it is because I see how things seem to go there in Thailand that I do believe that that will not happen in July.
      The only way it would is if the business owners get what they need to get everybody the V.
      Then, theoretically after being in Phuket for a given amount of time one can travel anywhere in Thailand.
      I wouldn't put my money on that. Thailand was my number 1 place to retire to, but not anymore. Cambodia, Laos, or maybe Malasia (but I haven't been there yet.)
      Only time will tell but I would rather not have to wait.
      I may go to Mexico for the summer and then see what is happening.
      Sorry about the rant.

    I enjoyed watching your trip to the market. Kampot appears to be charming. Are the local people as friendly in Kampot as the folks in Siem Reap? Do many of the locals in Kampot speak a little English, or is it more of a rarity? In the time you've been in Kampot have you seen many other expats? I checked the weather online, and it looks like your in for scattered thunderstorms for the next week or two, so stay dry! BTW, I've been watching more of your ads!

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much for watching, and glad you enjoyed visiting the market! Kampot is very charming, and in the centre of town there are several streets full of colonial buildings that are very picturesque. We have found that locals speak enough English to get by, and people selling things ALWAYS have a calculator on hand to show prices, so that makes life very easy. There are a lot of expats here, and they're from a wide range of countries, at least it would seem so. We had big thunderstorms yesterday and lying around with the window open getting the storm breeze was a pleasant change from the April heat. Seems we are having an early wet season this year. Thanks for watching the ads, it really helps!

    While I was in Kampot I didn't have cooking facilities, so I mostly ate in cheap restaurants and street food. I've been in Kep for about 3 weeks, it's really quiet, I think I prefer Kampot. Kep is a good place for a day trip from Kampot (when travel resumes) but not really much to do, I went to Kep beach yesterday and had the whole beach to myself. Kep is more expensive, quite a few expats living here mostly French, so, for right now, I'm kind of undecided on where to go next, either back to Kampot or possibly PP

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  3 года назад

      Kep is an interesting and strange place. It's strung out along the coast with no discernable town centre, at least that we could make out. The abandoned villas there are a big drawcard for me as I love to wander around inside them and take photos. Kampot has the benefit of being small compared to PP - it's just so hard to get around in that city, and if their covid numbers don't decrease, it might be a good place to avoid.

      No problem at all, Angela! Yes, there are a lot of people not wearing masks - that's why we are so vigilant with wearing ours. We wear masks whenever we leave the house. It just makes sense to take that precaution. I think Kampot is probably better in the mask-wearing stakes than a lot of other towns and villages, but at least there are very few infections here. Kampot is indeed a lovely place to settle. We moved all of our stuff including all of our personal belongings and two motos in a van. We came the whole way in one hit, so just under 9 hours. It was a long day, but there were no issues and everything went smoothly.

    How do you register to get the Vaccine in Kampot?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  3 года назад

      I think you can register through an app, but it's only in Khmer. You can also go to the local sangkat office I think, but haven't tried.

      Yes, the roads and construction was just too much. Kampot is beautiful and new places to explore. We are just finding out feet so it's a fun adventure.

    smart fruit seller, cleaning the money that she took from you.

      Absolutely, I think it's great that she took that precaution. Unfortunately that market is currently closed due to a Covid case (maybe cases?) discovered there.
