Sweet..... Maybe that's why you are always the dentist 🤔 Yes it seems Cambodia is much better in a few departments than some western countries. I think Covid had a huge toll on doctor's plus the huge amount of money and time it takes to become one is making a shortage.
Hello 👋 Yes it is confusing but in SE Asia if you have emergency medical insurance, everything else is pretty cheap. So get the basic insurance and then have some money put aside just incase.
When trying to figure out where to move to. All the fun things are the easy stuff to look up . The non fun things are unfortunately the most important to check into. You made this so clear with all this information! Very appreciative for you explaining all the this information. 😊
Wow, such timing. I am a long time subscriber, as I had intentions to move to Kampot when I took retirement. I had visited Cambodia, and Kampot in particular, many times in the years past. I left after only two months as I had been sick nearly the whole time and got a first hand look at the quality of healthcare and the cleanliness of the facilities there. After two visits to clinics and two to a hospital, I felt I was worse off than when I started. One "Dr" made four different diagnosis complete with treatment plans in less than ten minutes, changing her mind and actually telling me "No, that might make it worse". I finally made plans to fly back to the US while still sick to seek help from competent doctors. My travel insurance and BCBS health insurance were both rejected by all of them, and I was told to pay them and then seek reimbursement. Folks should be very informed as to what they are getting in to if they have ongoing health issues before moving to Cambodia. From your video, it seems that Siem Reap may have it together a bit more than other places. Cheers
Siem Reap is far bigger than Kampot, plus it has more Tourists and expats living here. It's good enough to help with almost anything or at least patch you up and fly you out. You could also get a video Doctor's call as well.
Great video. I live walking distance to Neak Hospital. I hope I never need it. At the age of 69 with no pre existing disease, aside from skin cancer treatments, the cost of being a surfer. You are from OZ, I know you are more than aware of different types of skin cancers. I have had all of them even Melanoma. I lived! I had three surgeries at the Phuket Bangkok Hospital. On the third surgery I told the surgeon cut in as deep as you can. He did and he finally got in all out before it reached my lymph nodes.
Wow, nice hospital. I've had a blood test which my local family clinic GP sent to Phnom Penh, cost about $130. Just had a hernia operation at a local polyclinic. Cost $1000. On the mend. Keep well
Wow, thanks..... more ads more money, more money we can give to charities. We aim for 10mins, where it seems some people are putting out 20 to 30 mins with heaps of fill.

You have answered all my concerns about Siem Reap medical care and made me feel much better about a possible future in SR. I have been there before and have read the expat forums about local care, which was pretty rudimentary -- to be kind. Your report was so much better. I just had several blood test, kidney function, electrolytes, liver function, full blood, thyroid, count, urinalysis, cholesterol and a few more. Also consultation and medicine...I paid $33.2USD. Polyclinic in Taphul. Dr spoke good English and wait time was very fast.
@@ForRiel All is okay. Just in Hypothyroidism, I had thyroid cancer several years ago. Had a total thyroidectomy. I haven't been getting enough thyroxine. I'm was always tired and now doubled in weight.
@@ForRiel Thanks Claire, seeing I will be over 60yrs old when I arrive in Cambodia the SafetyNet Website would suggest I would not qualify " Eligibility up to 60 years old (renewal without age limit)". Siem Riep Expats FB page provided 3 recommendations LUMA Asia Care, April MHC LUMA & AIA and I am currently comparing Plan examples provided. One of the 3 provided an example cost of treating a broken leg at one of the main Siem Riep Hospitals to be around $15000 which seemed high considering a walk in non-insured foreigner to almost any German Hospital could expect to be charged around $3500 which would mean it would be considerably cheaper to fly back to Germany for treatment which doesnt seem right. Would you guys maybe be able to find out what the average charge for a foreigner with no insurance would expect to pay for a walk in to a Siem Riep Hospital to have a Broken leg treated as an example.
Planning to move to SR with my wife next year. I'm guessing I will be ineligible for health insurance due to pre-existing cancer. But I wonder if there is any insurance policy that covers accident only? I'm not worried about illness so much as I would just return to NZ for treatment. I have spent a fair amount of time researching health care options in Asia, I believe this is the first You Tube video of this nature with reference to Cambodia... so, you are performing a valuable pubic service. I clicked on the link to Safety Wing... apparently they didn't like my age, single status or dollar amount of coverage requested. Anyway, I'm probably covered for 95% of the risks I perceive with the AXA plan and it is affordable... at least for now. Thanks again for all that you two do!
For what it's worth, when I was staying in Battambang most of this year, the clinic that was recommended was Handa. I can't believe Jeremy got Typhoid. I'm surprised he is alive. How did the doctor say that he contracted it? I caught e-coli poisoning in the Philippines and was hooked up to iv's in the hospital for two days. The doctor thinks I contracted it from the ice cubes in some iced tea at a restaurant.
You could have got it anywhere, unfortunately sometimes you get unlucky. Jeremy was very sick and is still recovering, but it did have a few side affects that are maybe long term 😕 . We forgot to have a typhoid booster but we won't make that mistake again.
Thanks Clare for the Valuable info, Just a Heads up on Meds, find the Active ingredients (chemical compounds) and mention that to the Pharmacist, including any other names the said A/I may have. It makes life a lot easier if you have a basic knowledge on how "The System" works, Plus due diligence is required when researching Meds ie side effects especially when 2 or more Meds are used, i'm sure we have all heard of bad reactions due to drug combinations.
Thanks so much for this post. I am being approved for DSP back here, so I have outstanding medical conditions. It might be great if you can interview people who self fund and how they manage. I probably will have to do the same
Thanks for an interesting video. How far ahead did you book your tetanus jab? I think this might be an option on arrival for long stay tourists. Many pharmacies in the UK offer vaccine services. Is that the case in Cambodia? Thanks for the info!
question for you: after seeing your health video. Is there any recomended vaccines one should get before moving to Cambodia? If too controversial, where could one look for info? @@ForRiel
Overseas Health Insurance is a box of the unknown. I was watching another YT channel talking about world wide coverage health insurance carriers. The broker mentioned that U.K. based companies are better due to the strict underwriting impossed by the U.K. regulators. Especially in relation to pre-existing conditions. And be wary of Pre-Authorization vs. Pre-Certification clauses (Pre-Auth preferred). The broker mentioned that the most pushed carrier plans are the least protective of the consumer, but they make the carrier money.
Our health insurance is backed by Forte insurance. It's pretty basic but has the important stuff we need just incase. We will do a medical insurance video soon.
Great information, normal health issues can be dealt in a lot of places here. When it comes to bone fractures you better be with Royal Angkor, however you need to have health insurance coverage, pretty expensive. You get a professional service which is easily on European level.
What types of health insurance policies do you advocate? From Australia? International expat insurance companies? Cambodia based? Excellent video and very critical for older folk Keep up the fine work
We are in talks with our local health insurance company, so will make a post about that shortly. Plus we will do a full interview with a broker early next year.
Thanks guys for another informative/reassuring video on Siem Reap and by extension Cambodia. I was hoping you would mention specific insurers or brokers for health cover and I watched the video again in case I had missed it.
It's hard because many insurers won't take people over 60. If you are under that, have a look at Safetynet. If you are older, might need to use a broker.
Thanks Claire! Hope your husband gets well soon. I was thinking about moving there but I'm 71 and getting ins. at a reasonable rate seems impossible. Health insurance here in Cuenca Ecuador is much more reasonable through Humana.
Thank you so much for this excellent and informative video. All your videos are great and very much appreciated. My wife and I plan to visit Cambodia later this year.
Thanks, Claire - very helpful video. Very reassuring to see the options to have oneself assessed regularly even with stable chronic conditions... here's hoping I make it their one of these years.
Thank you! For minor day-to-day things, the care here is absolutely adequate. We have insurance incase of the big stuff, and hopefully it would be enough if ever needed.
I saw your vid on insurance earlier this year. I took your advice and am now insured through Safety net. 58 year old female, 482 USD per year. Good deal huh?
if you are really sick you always have Thailand extremely close..Thailand is ranked no 6 in the world in healthcare for all the normal small things i find that cambodian clinics are pretty good and cheap and fast..most times its just cash and no need to show the insurance
Yes, I agree Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are both very accessible from here and great options for more serious things. The clinics and Japan hospital are more than adequate for most things. 🙂
Question for you. Have you heard if the rabies vaccine for humans is available at Angkor Japan Friendship Hospital or anywhere in Siem Reap? The cost for the vaccine in the US is outrageous. We do animal welfare volunteering and I'd love to have the vaccine.
@@ForRiel Correct. 4 doses if bitten. 2 doses for pre-exposure prophylaxis - recommended if doing high risk things like animal welfare volunteering. At least that's the recommendation in the USA. A single dose of rabies vaccine in the USA is nearly $400. Just crazy. Do you know if I would need to go to a clinic like you did for your tetanus vaccine? Or do pharmacies sell the vaccine? We are both Registered Nurses and my wife could give me the stab! LOL
Another great video Claire. Wonder if you could venture a little further into retiring in Cambodia and do a video into the often avoided subject of what expat retirees are do in Cambodia when they reach late 70's & 80's++? Are there retiree villages/care centers or other ...or are they expected to return home? Anyone in that situation to interview? No one covers the inevitable last quarter but it will happen regardless. Cheers, John
So what is the cost for services at the best hospital? Thankyou for your videos! We are 4 years out from retirement but we are planning to be slow travelers and Cambodia is on our list. Also interested in yearly check ups and looking for good dental
Great video! Very informative. The annual checkup is a very good and affordable idea. Do they take Visa and Mastercard in the hospitals and medical clinics?
I have a question to ask I take pain pills because I had back surgery I take a small dose of Vicodin. Do I need to bring my prescription from the US from my doctor in order to get my pain pills for my back?
For Riel, I saw you being tested with your blood pressure and height or weight was that before your vaccination. Are those tests required? Here in the Philippines, vaccination used to be fast and direct without those check-ups before the start of the COVID pandemic but after that, I find it weird now that they require patients to have some tests even just for simple vaccines such as those for tetanus or typhoid.
Depends where you go. I had a typhoid vaccination and it was done in a minute, no additional tests required. For the record, they didn't charge for any of the additional tests, just the vax itself.
Hi I am just wondering if you have Australian medical insurance and how much per month it costs and what is covered as I am struggling to find and understand getting medical insurance.....I am 53 turning 54 on March 2024 and the onlt pre existing medical I have is Diabetes type 2 and a slightly high blood pressure which is not a big problem I believe!

It is not that uncommon in SR. I have heard of quite a few expats getting it. So get your booster!
My friend John H said you might know about health care there. So I looked and it was just posted! But Safetynet won't insure me.
We know another insurance broker, they are expensive but unfortunately it's that or self insuring. Just message us on Instagram so we can chat.
Thanks again great info. 😊😊😊😊😊
Our pleasure! 😇
Very informative thanks for sharing
Glad it was helpful! 😇
That's kinda what I meant by it's generic name, active ingredient sounds better.
Definitely always do your research before mixing medication 💊
I vote for 'generic'.
Thank You so much for your compassion in sharing and helping to keep expats healthy and providing the needed information.
Our pleasure, we are just passing on our own personal experiences as we know it cam be hard moving to a different country
Thanks for your tips. I am following them verbatum. I will be there august 2024
Wonderful! Good luck with your planning :)
Claire, do they accept oversea insurance, like Aetna? Thanks 🙏
Unsure you would have to contact your insurance company.
Thanks so much for this post. I am being approved for DSP back here, so I have outstanding medical conditions.
It might be great if you can interview people who self fund and how they manage.
I probably will have to do the same
We have a few friends who do this so we could do that early next year.
Great, I will have another go at coming in February- March.
I will look forward to it.
Thanks for an interesting video.
How far ahead did you book your tetanus jab? I think this might be an option on arrival for long stay tourists.
Many pharmacies in the UK offer vaccine services. Is that the case in Cambodia?
Thanks for the info!
Most boosters or Vaccines you just go in and ask, if they haven't got it they will refer you. All extremely simple 🤩
thank you so much for the information!!
You are so welcome! 😇
question for you: after seeing your health video. Is there any recomended vaccines one should get before moving to Cambodia? If too controversial, where could one look for info?

Always helpful insights. Great topic and covered well. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! 🙏🙂🎉

Yes, I have heard a lot of great things about that hospital. It's great to have it there in case of emergency. Thank you for watching ☺️
What types of health insurance policies do you advocate? From Australia? International expat insurance companies? Cambodia based?
Excellent video and very critical for older folk
Keep up the fine work
We are in talks with our local health insurance company, so will make a post about that shortly. Plus we will do a full interview with a broker early next year.

Greatly appreciated
Good info. Many don't think about these kind of things while traveling or relocating.
Yes, the longer you stay, the higher the likelihood you'll need these things.
@@ForRiel Thank you.
The Royal Hospital or the Japanese Hospital are great options for me. Are they connected to hospitals in Phnom Penh?
Unsure if they are connected but I'm sure they all work together in some way.
What all documents to you need to bring to Asia to teach English long term?
Police check is about it. Highly recommend doing a TEFL course, a referral link to Destination Tefl is down below.
Do I have to do a police check in my home country before arriving in Cambodia? I will be teaching English. Thanks
Thanks Claire! Hope your husband gets well soon. I was thinking about moving there but I'm 71 and getting ins. at a reasonable rate
seems impossible. Health insurance here in Cuenca Ecuador is much more reasonable through Humana.
After 70 people usually self insure here, and have a yearly major check up as well.
There is a dearth of information for what the best hospitals / clinics are from real people living in a city. Thank you!
Glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching.
Great info Claire. Thank you. I would love to see the same type of video about chiropractors, eye doctors, physiotherapists and dentists in SR
You got it! 🥰
Thank you so much for this excellent and informative video. All your videos are great and very much appreciated. My wife and I plan to visit Cambodia later this year.
That's wonderful, thanks for watching.
OMG, typhoid sounds very serious. Hope he doesn't have long-term problems.
It can, as we have found out. Luckily there is a vaccine, that's why it's not that common anymore.
Fantastic, yes. We are talking to them about a For Riel deal, that sounds good. Will post that when we finalise the details.
I think this video is especially for a certain age demographic. 😊 Enjoy retirement! ❤️
It is also helpful for anyone wanting to live here for a short time also. Knowing you can get general health care is good to know.
Very useful and well presented video Claire with lots of good advice!
Glad you think so! 🤔 But are we driving up prices for local people 🤔
if you are really sick you always have Thailand extremely close..Thailand is ranked no 6 in the world in healthcare
for all the normal small things i find that cambodian clinics are pretty good and cheap and fast..most times its just cash and no need to show the insurance
Yes, I agree Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are both very accessible from here and great options for more serious things. The clinics and Japan hospital are more than adequate for most things. 🙂
Greatly appreciated, thanks for your efforts
My pleasure! 😍
Question for you. Have you heard if the rabies vaccine for humans is available at Angkor Japan Friendship Hospital or anywhere in Siem Reap? The cost for the vaccine in the US is outrageous. We do animal welfare volunteering and I'd love to have the vaccine.
Yes it is readily available here, I think it's around $20 per shot. I think it's 1 + another 4 if you get bitten but not sure.
LOL
Great vid, awesome information. Thanks Guys!😊
No problem 😊
Excellent info, thank you bunches.
Glad it was helpful! 😇
Can I use my US credit card in supermarkets here?
Yes you can 🤩
Very good video very informative
Thanks very much! Glad it was useful.
hi... please tell me the cost of getting your blood test?
There is a list of think you can get, so anything from $5 up.
Possibly! There are several different projects being built at the moment aimed at retired expats.
great vlog
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent info!
Glad it was helpful! 😇
So what is the cost for services at the best hospital? Thankyou for your videos! We are 4 years out from retirement but we are planning to be slow travelers and Cambodia is on our list. Also interested in yearly check ups and looking for good dental
The Japanese Friendship Hospital has a good checkup starting from $80 and we recommend Master Dental in Siem Reap.
Great video! Very informative. The annual checkup is a very good and affordable idea. Do they take Visa and Mastercard in the hospitals and medical clinics?
I'm not sure if they take Visa or MC, but you can transfer from ABA once you open an account here.
@@ForRiel How did you pay the hospital?
Debit card, unsure if you can use a credit card 💳
@@ForRiel can you use a debit card from your home country? Can you use Visa or Mastercard to pay for hotel?
Could you recommend an affordable dentist in SiemReap? Thank you. A friend needs a tooth pulled
Jeremy has been to Master Dental and said they were good. A lot of expats here use them, but check the reviews on Google Maps.
@@ForRiel thank you very much. I will pass the word onto my friend.
Great video thanks for the info. 😁
Glad it was helpful!
We have policies with Safetynet. It costs 5-600 a year depending on the level of excess you choose and the level of cover. Their website is good and they are responsive by email.
I have diabetes type 2 and I don't nelieve that they will cover me@@ForRiel
Thx, good info.

As a 61 years old male, ill go to the platinum services at $300 for everything, they might find something age related faster, than getting the regular one, only to be on the safe side of aging in a foreign country!!
Yes, it really seems like a great option, and for that price you get a really good sense of what's going on with your health. Thanks for watching.
Very useful info
Thanks a lot
May i request you whom or which agent can i approach for long term visa 1 yr renewable. Also do we get any Tax residency certificate and if yes after how many months. I am a trader in interactive brokers. Do we get taxed on foreign income? I am 52 yrs old and planning to retire there.

What is the emergency ambulance system or 911 like in Siem Reap?? And typical surgical procedures not coveted by insurance?
Ambulances are privately owned and run by the hospitals and clinics. Insurance coverage depends on your level of insurance, so I can't answer that.
Hi I am just coureous if I can buy a very good high end cappacino machine for home use in Siem Reap and is there fresh cows milk available just like you find in Woolies and coles here in Australia?
Yes, absolutely on both counts.
are the high end fully automatic cappuccino machines expensive like they are in Australia or are they good prices?@@ForRiel
@@ForRielWould it be possible to find local butcheries in Siem Reap that sell 🍖 beef? Thanks in advance.
Hi again and a happy belated Christmas to you guys.......Does Siem Reap Cambodia have turkeys for sale please?
They do have turkey at some of the hotels over Christmas but not a common thing to see.
Please all dont skip adds
Unfortunately ads are annoying but they pay the bills.... 🥲
Royal Angkor International hospital.
Yes it is good, but very expensive.
Be wary of fake drugs.
Very rare here as the real thing is pretty cheap anyway.
What does Cambodia have for eyecare? I need prescription glasses I have transitions. Is it possible to get a good set of transitions made In Phnom Penh.
Yes they have everything, but we recommend Kuala Lumpur for all your optical needs. Plus it's a fun place to visit.
Thank you
