  • We finally arrive at the fifth and last numbered entry of this dungeon crawling series so far. So far all four past entries have brought something new to the table, and they've all been quite enjoyable. Can the same be said about Etrian Odyssey 5? We'll see in this review.
Massive thanks to Huckebein for information on the series over Discord. And Fuchsia for finding and isolating that image of Lina holding up the meat that I vaguely described I was looking for.

I just question how well that would work considering how reliant EO is on a touch screen. I know the Switch has one, but it's barely ever used (And for good reason, it feels terrible and doesn't support the same type of stylus as the DS/3DS). :/

So happy you got to 5. This is one of the best RPGs I've played. I played a couple other EO games before, but when I got to this, I was like, "this is the start of a new era for EO-and maybe dungeon crawlers at large!!" I was wrong, of course...
But yeah, THIS is how you streamline a series. Every QoL feature or simplification feels justified by a design shift (like more involved floors justifying floor jumps). You touched on everything I could think of. And it was great to see every one of these games get the attention to detail it deserves.

Awesome review! EO5 was my introduction to the series and still my favorite. Love the little flourishes that elevate the feeling of adventure, like the dungeon events and cooking. It's also nice how the different racial skills aid in roleplay, loved making my murderous Harbinger (actually a softie) the one responsible for animal care.

All I can hope is that it gets more and more love in the future. Especially if atlus releases another game in the future, I feel as though it would be optimal for them to do so on PC as it's systems and layout fit perfectly to the platform.
    Tldr; amazing work!

Despite the questionable voice over, Etrian Odyssey 5 is probably my favorite entry in the series. I agree with most of the points you raised. The first playthrough is pretty rough since you won’t know about advanced classes and building your team around them half way down a playthrough and how difficult the bosses are. Glad you were able to play it as well, albeit not on original hardware.

"Iorys" is a bad corruption of "Aeolus". This game has a lot of weird localization quirks where it's clear that the localizers did not understand what the original material was referencing.
And fun fact: the dragons were supposed to return at some point, apparently. I found their assets, rebuilt for this game's new format, lurking in the game data. I appreciate that this game has a lot of new monster designs but they went really hard on the reskins here, to make the burden of creating new stuff easier. I feel like EO4 did the same thing.
And I'll say that advanced classing is better than multi-classing. Subclassing has been a complete failure each and every time and the grimoire system, while fun with monster skills and certain passives, was a disaster with class skills.

Been looking forward to this review all week! Currently in the 5th stratum of EO3, which I’m playing largely due to your reviews getting me interested in the series. Can’t wait to get to the 3DS entries. They look like they smooth out a lot of the rougher edges that I’ve had to learn to live with in 3. I’ve been really enjoying the game and I’ve enjoyed all your videos on the series! Yours is probably the best EO content on the whole of English speaking RUclips.

Advanced classes is an idea i love because it allows for a great Conceptual difficulty (conceptual difficulty is the knowledge and information you have to handle in a game) increase without overwhelming new players with future options. They also make classes very distinct in a way that i prefer to subclassing: and with subclassing you have to balance it in a very different way, while with advanced classes you can make some super powerful abilities that would be broken in sublasses.
I liked Etrian odyssey nexus a lot, but an issue it had was that its conceptual difficulty was that i sort off... knew everything about the classes halfway through, and just kept leveling up their skills in certain ways. So i didnt have the same decisions about what to level up as i do early game, and since the game is very very long and a bit bloated tbh, I had to switch out my c lasses to keep me from getting bored. But that requires retiring them, and grinding more (even with the EXP dlc), and getting new equipment and a lot of work.
I loved Advanced classes in EOV, because just as i had gotten used to the classes abilities at the end of the second stratum, suddenly a whole new sleuth of options opened up! In the first few games, they tried to give novelty via unlucked classes, but that required switching your party and abondoning a lot of work. With Advanced classes, its like making a whole new party but with the current members! And if you regret your decision about which advanced class to have for a character, its pretty cheap to rest someone to pick the other class.
My only real complaint is that, as you say, if you had planned out your whole party with the skill tree you had seen before, and if you then wanted to switch directions after the AC unluck, that is was annoying and felt out of your control
My suggestion for fixing this would be: When you first unluck the advanced classesm, you get a opportuniy for a free rest which doesnt cost levels: So then you can explore and play around with the new skill trees! That way, you can keep the suprise element of it, but also allow for even smoother midgame party planning.

The best game in the series, I would say. Nexus has more content, but V is more focused, and the number of options is still very large (even when removing bad race/class combos). I love the music, the classes, the world design, the encounters... heck, I even love the voice acting! The main drawback of the game is that it kinda peaks in 3rd Stratum, so it kinda loses steam with the 4th. Still an absolutely amazing game, with lots of synergies to think about. Sad to see the series disappear, with the 3DS eshop closing down soon, and no news... :(

Awesome review as always. I'm probably not unusual from many others in that I started the series with 3 and thus have a particular degree of affection for it, but I've found something to admire in subsequent entry.
5 has been on my backlog for a decent chunk of time (and learning that a Necropolis is the THIRD stratum in the game has bumped it up the queue) and hearing you put you put it within the vicinity of 3 has me excited for when I actually commit to starting it up. Funnily enough, it seems that the briskness of the combat and rather generous opening up of party composition options may have been course corrections from the quaint but sluggish early game of 4, so this may be a case of the Etrian team's patented "reactive balancing" across iterations actually working out.

Etrian Odyssey 5 was the one where I actually kept track of all developments leading up to its release both in Japan and in the west, I even helped compile a few pages on the english Etrian Odyssey wiki during that time. What I loved seeing the most was the character customization. It was the most logical step up from the alternate portraits that EO3 and EO4 had, but the voices just gave even more life to your party and I loved the little barks they had, even if there was only little variation in what you heard as you went through the game.
The narrator was really awesome too. It gave so much more depth to the dungeon.
The Mastery Titles just make your team even more unique too, even when you have two of the same class. Simply because people want to give them unique names.
Where EO3 was, in my opinion, the pinnacle of what Etrian Odyssey should be, EO5 is definitely the height of what it could be. It has everything you want and then some. It's just the modern version of EO3.

I still haven't beaten it yet, since it was the first game in the franchise that I played, so once I got to the end of the 4th stratum I decided to put it down until I beat the previous games, and am currently on the 4th stratum in Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold.
I liked Etrian Odyssey Untold and have been enjoying EO:U2, though I've always been more of an Icewind Dale than Baldur's Gate guy, so I prefer the full player made parties in EO5 to the premade parties in EO:U and EO:U2.
I know that I could have chosen to play through those games in classic mode, but in EO:U they only gave you 1 save slot 😞
I have a classic save in EO:U2 that I occasionally boot up when I want to vary things up a bit, but the brokenness of the Fafnir Knight is fun enough to keep me playing in Story Mode lol
I highly recommend playing Infinite Adventures on PC.
It's the closest dungeon crawler to the Etrian Odyssey games that I've found on that platform.
The dungeon crawlers from Experience are also quite good, but they're more inline with Wizardry than EO.
    Keep up the great work!

5's my favorite too. On certain... places... it's often dismissed as below average within the series. But despite loving 3 too, I much prefer the focus on the single dungeon without major side-map/ship distractions, and the lack of multiclass is also lovely for cutting out 6 hours+ of my usual pre-planning. Splitting each class into 2 well themed and focused choices is a MUCH better solution than multiplying each class by the number of all classes and adding that to my decision paralysis, it also cuts the cheese out (such as dipping your feet into another class just because it has that one OP skill) - much like how Pathfinder2's system improves on 5E.

Fun fact: you can solo this game with an Earthlain-Dragoon or a Therian-Rover (and I think a Celestrian-Necromancer can do it, but it’d be a hellish task). The former is easier, though.
The Dragoon is my absolute favorite EO class for good reasons.

Etrian Odyssey 5 was epic from start to finish. As a veteran of the series, you can feel the amount of Quality of Life changes when moving from 4 to 5
I do hope the series continues onto the Switch. It can be tricky to hand draw maps on the switch but honestly, I wouldn't mind if *maps were auto-drawn like in SMT Strange Journey or even in EO Nexus where you got the option for auto-draw if you are lazy*
Just walk to a tile and everything is drawn out.
As for the poll at the end of the video, I would choose multi-classing. I do appreciate how class mastery gives you more skills to further your build specialty but multi classing gives a wider berth of freedom on how you want to build your OC characters.

I kinda regret not buying this before the eShop shut down (Especially since I *did* get 4, 2U, and MD), and the first physical copy I've seen online is double what the digital price was at that time (If I remember correctly), so getting a copy will be a bit difficult, but at least the DLC wasn't super exciting overall (Unlike 2U), so I didn't permanently miss out on anything I'd particularly care about.

I'm currently developing a dungeon crawler designed after Etrian Odyssey and especially the game Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei which I recently played as someone who is half the age of that game it has held up immensely well, specifically the exploration, it has significantly better exploration than SMT 1 which pretends to be open ended but in actuality is entirely linear with a bunch of incorrect paths
Anyway I wanted to ask 2 questions to DRPG fans
1, Would you prefer auto-mapping or drawing the maps yourselves in a game like the one I'm developing which has significantly more verticality in map design, the verticality might make manual mapping confusing to a player as each level will have multiple mapping layers you can swap between
2: Do you prefer your DRPGs to have a set story such as SMT 1 or 2 with a set cast, or your DRPGs to allow full control over your party, furthermore if a story has you make your own party are you fine with NPCs playing an important role that may take away from your created party like in many DRPGs made by Experience

EO truly works best on its home console with the screen to draw maps. (I own all of them and cherish the franchise a lot)
However, I would give ANYTHING to have them on PC or switch. Any platform to make them more accessible.... I also hate using the 3DS.
After playing EO1 on Emulator for a few hours earlier this week, it's really not that bad of a trade off.
I've been looking for an alternative to EO for so long... Nothing compares, man :(

Very awesome review! I also think 5 is probably the best EO but 3 is my favorite because it was the last game that really captured me like games would as a child. Advanced classing is really cool and kind of gives you 20 classes to experiment with. I really loved getting to name the classes also. My only real disappointment with the game was the final stratum having a kind of boring bgm compared to other final stratums in my opinion.

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  Год назад

Yeah, that's fair. Etrian Odyssey 3's setting is one of my favorites of any game, so it's a difficult game to compare to any other entry in this series. It's so much in its own field, doing its own thing and handling that very well.
I also kind of just want to space this out to avoid spoilers for people who aren't familiar.
But I really enjoyed the massive, massive misdirect 5 pulls with its lategame content. Using familiar visuals and setup from across almost the entire series only to not quite play it out like any of them. Pretty inventive.

Hi could you do a review on Evil Twin Cypriens Chronicles? Its a Horror 3D platformer with a great style, good music and alot of imagination. And on top of that its a rare case of a game that was only released in Europe. Also if you decide to do it play the PS2 version and not the Dreamcast version. The Dreamcast version is more expensive and actually has some content taken away.

NGL, I didn't like the advanced class system when I first started EO5. EO4 was the first game in the series I played to the end, so I was trying to build my characters as jack-of-all-trades in 5 as well. Once I understood how to build effective characters it became my favorite game in the series.

I wasn't ready for the memes in this video lmao
Also , I love voice acting in this series , but I understand it's not for everyone . However , if you brought up how repetitive and amateurish it is , I was hoping for a gag about the skill tree .
When you rest/retire a character and come back to allocate skill trees , they say the same line for *every single point you add* ! You might want to see that for the meme material that it is . Thankfully in Nexus this was fixed , by having you allocate multiple points at once and allowing you to upgrade skills in places of the tree that you haven't reached , assuming you have enough points
