Yeah, a flash cart basically lets you play ROMs the same way you would on an emulator. I used to play a lot of EO using them over the course of years due to lack of availability. Never had any issue running the series across multiple types of carts, firmwares, and DS models. So things like fantranslations, ROM hacks, and balance patches work well on them. For emulation, I'd recommend MelonDS, it's a very solid emulator that requires very little fiddling to work well. DeSMuME kinda works too, but it has some pretty horrific input delay that becomes more noticeable with action games. I'm not too familiar with the state of DS emulation on mobile phones or tablets, but I'm sure that's doable too since a friend recently replayed EO3 during a camping trip using a tablet.

I really enjoyed this review! As a lifelong fan of JRPGs as a genre, EO3 is my favorite game of all time full-stop, it makes me really happy to still see it be talked about. Certainly not a flawless game in terms of mechanics, but the amount of creativity present throughout the whole of its design is something that I find hugely inspiring; there’s not a single part of this game that feels tired or phoned-in to me, even after the obscene amount of times I’ve played through it. It’s a shame that its public reception seems so mixed, I’d personally heartily recommend it to any fan of the 3DS side of the series - though I’d advise that they expect to be relatively experimental with their party composition. I’m very interested to hear your thoughts on EO4 once you get to it! It cleans up a lot of the more clunky parts of EO3, making it a lot more accessible for those with a lower jank-tolerance while also taking said features in interesting new directions. Thank you again for reviewing this game, it’s silly to say but it really made my day! :-)

I don’t know why but the part 15:32 reminded me of this old story trailer for Etrian Odyssey 3: ruclips.net/video/gu1KGdig40I/видео.html I loved when Atlus did weird marketing like this these days they are more predictable. This is my favorite Etrian Odyssey title and I am so glad it’s get such an amazing video I’ll be looking forward to when you tackle the series next.
This is def a favorite of the series. I had a weird team mainly having a backline ninja for stealth strike and building zodiac to only use ST spells and enhanced damage on weakness to the point where they were hitting for over 1500 dmg and easily one shotting FOEs. The prince/princess class was easily my favorite though, to the point where i did not make a healing class at all and they were able to keep my team completely healthy throughout the entire game.
I never really was a fan of EO3 and 4 but they did some cool things for the series. I think Untold onward the series really hit its stride in perfecting its gameplay loop but I appreciate just how ambitious 3 was compared to 2
Etrian Odyssey is a series which I've never played, but always had a passing interest in, it's paradigm of exploration and mapping appeals to me more and more as I've matured. I want to say I had a demo for the 4th game early in the 3DS's lifecycle when I was younger, but never really got into it due to not appreciating the mapping feature at the time. Problem is, whenever I look up images or playthroughs of the game it never seems to fit with my memory of it, to the point where I have to doubt whether it was actually Etrian Odyssey or whether I've just Mandela effected myself into thinking it was. I suppose my point is that I should get around to playing them myself, and I'm hoping you cover 4 to see if it can help finally bury this phantom game.
I decided to give it a try and boot it up, and I can say that it was Etrian Odyssey 4. The timeline fits, and having decided to give the game a try, it probably is. It looks nothing like I remember, but my memory is almost certainly wrong here, but the core thrust of exploring Yggdrasil with an airship is the same.
This game is so good, well.. except the deep ones, those guys felt like reprinted forest folk, but at least we can fight their leader this time around and that reedems them.
EO3 is a game I wished I could love for it's style, class concepts, and pretty much everything about it, but I couldn't handle the gameplay. It somehow makes you feel underpowered when it came to character progression (ii part to me going blind and making "bad" decisions. Of course Arbalist is best as front row attacker! Of course Monk fist skills suck! My Zodiac was spamming the free TP skill for half the game with the occasional Charged Limit because frankly, unless you know some specific builds that work, it's the most reliable strategy you don't need to sink SP on like multi elements), while at the same time usually not being challenging anyways. This was me coming from EO4, which unlocked new stuff faster, gave you all sorts of fun toys to work with each other, did a great job at welcoming me as a new player without outside guides while still being challenging enough, and was the first JRPG in a long while I just had **fun** playing. Hell, in combat and customization, I had more fun playing the ORIGINAL EO1 a year later. I do plan to try EO3R, so maybe I will get to fully enjoy the game then, but from what I've read I'm not the only one thinking this game is incredibly hit-or-miss.
Wow i never had that progresión problems because sea quest let you lv up super fast. But yea some class are super slow to be useful, maybe you did a team whit 5 of those. Theres alway classes that are strong from the beginning to. Well the game does not explain a loot of extra mechanics until etrian 4. Like bind legs cause you not miss even being blind or using a low accuracy skills. Bind head make you receive and do more damage. Hands reduce your damage output. Fear makes you do and receive 60% more damage. Stun makes you do and take 50% more damage. Parálisis make you vulnerable to binds. Maybe that helps if you convine the hints the video gives like charge. Oh and make a team of farmers that avoid fights and escapes that makes you progres faster and get overpowered. Good luck.
@@ricardohernandezr5765 Well first of all, I've played literally every single game in the series by now expect the Japanese exclusive EMD2 (and EO Mobile lol), on Expert (barring some postgame superbosses, and not touching the DS postgames so far). I know how ailments work. (though the descriptions you list don't seem to line up, and I don't think EO3R makes such drastic changes? I heard only Curse affects infliction chances there, not Paralysis. And only sleep and head/arm binds affect damage in most games) Secondly, the game wasn't hard. There were some pretty difficult side sea bosses (which I probably did too early judging by how late the ship upgrades came), an enemy in S5 that would barely/almost 1HKO me (which I imagine you are supposed to avoid by exploring at night/day, and fighting it was just a matter of "can I take a hit with DEF buff") and the final boss (who I just didn't know hated my Princess' buffs, and folded in a few turns after unnecessary grinding) The problem wasn't difficulty. The problem was that the game was fucking boring in comparison to EO4, all the 3DS games I played afterwards (EDIT: Besides like EMD or PQ1 and maybe 2, but who even cares?), and hell, even EO1 (which had more simple gameplay, but also tighter balance with harder enemies/bosses, where my characters felt like they were actually progressing and contributing, with battles that would sometimes end at just barely enough HP/TP) Since you brought up ailments, my team only had Gladiator, Monk and Arbalist with skills to provide them. The first two had better shit to do, and when I gave the blind skill a try on Arbalist (because again, I figured it could work as a backline support class) it was shit. I imagine grinding for being overpowered or using Charge would make the game even worse. I didn't think about making a farmer team either, and it's not like I needed it.
@@dutczar5436 mm by what's You mention maybe your team has a Bad sinergy. I remember My harbalest/ Gladiator destroyed post Game bosses súper fast. Maybe Bad sub class alineation i mean theres videos of people beating last post Game boss alone,or using 2 characters, thats why i feel more Freedom in that Game.
@@ricardohernandezr5765 Ironic you mention the superboss being beatable with one or two characters as an example of freedom, when from what I've heard it's generally considered to be one of the worse superbosses in the series with limited options for casual players. And from what I've played, only EO4 and 5 had reasonable superbosses, so that's saying something. The game does have more *options* than EO1 or EO2 on the sheer fact that the skills are more varied and with many more gimmicks. The problem is, for every good skill/tactic/synergy this game has, it feels like there is another one that is underwhelming, despite *seemingly* being a reasonable idea. You could also just not have options synergies between classes. My Gladiator/Monk/Princess/Zodiac/Arbalist team didn't seem to have them, besides maybe some healing shenanigans. And looking up some skills and guides later on, I fail to see any. Sure, maybe I got unlucky here, and got lucky with my EO1 party comp, but I didn't have this occur in any later game, so clearly EO3 still had a *lot* of things to improve on. If you mean main class/subclass synergies, I imagine there is a LOT of options I had I didn't use, but with the 5 level rest option the game isn't exactly welcoming to experimentation. I remember doing Princess/Wildiling because I figured I could fill up that empty 6th slot and use some extra ailments, and ended up being both disappointed by how ineffective it was, yet also not punished at all because my Princess was fine spamming buffs for the rest of the main game anyway. Which is another thing, the game just doesn't give you enough SP to experiment for my taste - EO1 didn't have much either, but it also didn't have 2 classes worth of skills available to everyone. Slapping Gladiator on Arbalist and spamming Charge to kill everything doesn't really translate to "fun" for me. In fact, recommending "meta" builds for someone in general is a pretty shitty way to advertise the game's freedom. "Oh look you can beat the superboss with a single character, just use these specific strats no player would reasonably come up with on a blind run!"
@@dutczar5436 im almost finishing My homework so last reply for me. I dint stick Gladiator because of charge it was because of the multy hit. Anyway i dint use any guide, My team was purely combined by reading the skills. Like monk has fire fist, so it combo using a Zodiac elemental. Ninja by example needs 2 slots to work properly cause if not his primary skill doesnt work. Or My monotype run that i tend to do on all etrian Odyssey games. I mean once i got to deep city i feel i could do a lot of combos. Un comparation to etrian Nexus were You unlock sub class at 9 story maze. Or Eo5 were imperial can one shoot by exception 2 bosses. But then again You can do a run of one characters almost in all etrian by exception of súper BOSS. Only Nexus,3 and original 2 are posible at least to me. By the way amrita 3 farmers... Well see You around , have a good night? Or day? I'm going to finish My homework and rest. Thanks for the distraction helps to rest the mind.
Some notes on this: • General consensus is that the 4 floor stratum is because they needed space for the Sea Quests, which are good in their own right, with a final boss fight against the Elder Dragon that, frankly, makes for a better sendoff *than the actual super boss.* • Floor 25 is *Heavily Implied* to basically be the Abyssal God. • The Unlockable Classes are…interesting. The Shogun (side with Armoroad) is generally regarded to be the better one, especially given the Gladiator Subclass. The Yggdroid (side with the Deep City) isn’t very good normally, but in a very strange example of gameplay and story integration, the one thing they excel at is fighting the Superboss (provided you GRIND them up).
Well as much as I love my robots there's no denying that Shogun works better as a class in a team oriented game. Yggdroids are too gimmicky with not great stat spread, bad equipment options, static TP and half of their tree demanding free slots in a party. They are powerhouses solo though. Been able to solo the main game pretty easily with one. Admittedly I was abusing every avenue I could (there isa reason why in latter games you can only equip one acessory) but still it wasn't exactly hard.
Love the DS trilogy to death. The general jank actually makes them better than the successive titles in my mind, they're fun to experiment around with - Caduceus in EO1 for example. That said, EO3 is probably the most polished of the three and also the most approachable. I'll personally always hold EO2 as the pinnacle, but damn if this game isn't amazingly fun.
Newcomer here. I've never played this genre even if I'm already 37. First party of 5 i tried had a hard time on the third floor. Content to give you a heads up to get on tracks are not many on RUclips. I decided to make a new game with a more standard composition (tank, warrior, archer, caster, healer) and what eased considerably the beginning of my playthrough was clearing the first 3 missions on ship. Got me extra cash and rewards which missed me when I began the first time. Are there mandatory advices like always have the item to tp back in town ?
The game you (and I) have to pay 250 bux for. And I did. Cuz I couldn't miss out ony my favorite EO's game cartridge. So much better than the first two installments imo :3
Mmm i almos played all the Eo to 100% except for Eo5 cause broken 3ds. But i can say my favorite is Eo3. I have 3 reasons. One: you can for first and only time play along whit a friend, do all the sea quest together. Second:the white forest , the bes stratum along whit the song of post game. 3•sub class let you buff any character to be the best character cause you can grind stats its infinite and easy using hammer or special drop condition. Great vid and Edition. That joke…haha.
I never found the Gladiator broken , in fact I found it underwhelming . The true overpowered class from my experience is the Ninja , with their Izuna skill they can steamroll nearly any random enemy , and those that don't fall to it get obliterated by the rest of the party . Not to mention they have a skill to reduce TP consumption which is passive , unlike the Zodiac's Dark Ether
Still need to play that at some point, as well as games by that developer. Saw a recent teaser for future Experience games and it featured art that I'm pretty sure was Himukai's. ruclips.net/video/-pKUYgEIrto/видео.html
Love the series, though, the only one i have finished, Is the IV AND i fucking loved that game story, still currently playing the first remake, fatal error to change clases.
I'd already finished my first playthrough, and a large part of the first draft before that happened. Returning to the project was a big "Oh... Yeah.... That's messed up." moment. Used to have that a few times when I named parties after online friends, then returning after a break and seeing a name of someone who'd slipped away a few times. Didn't think it'd ever happen while working on one of these videos. Third gen of Hololive seemed especially stable too.
I still remember watching trailers of EO IV to help me decide whether I should buy the game (I'm a huge JRPG fan) and thinking something along the lines of "meh, this map drawing looks kind of tedious and there's barely any story in the game. I'm really not sure if it'll be my cup of tea. It's one of my favourite games ever now! :D I played EO I, II and III later. Many people said EO III is the best in the series, so I had a lot of expectations. After having played it...Not really, EO IV is much better, imo, but EO III is still an amazing game. Just wish the post game boss wasn't so BS. I couldn't beat it, that left a bad taste in my mouth. Still waiting for Atlus to continue the series. Sigh... Hope to see you cover EO IV some time soon! :)

Also while i agree a New Game+ probably is smart before the nightmarish Post Game Dungeon, as i have my usual masochist needs i just finished 99% of all content in the game in the first playthrough :O
But yes i sure got the challenge i thirsted for in that hellhole...
I don’t know why but the part 15:32 reminded me of this old story trailer for Etrian Odyssey 3: ruclips.net/video/gu1KGdig40I/видео.html
I loved when Atlus did weird marketing like this these days they are more predictable. This is my favorite Etrian Odyssey title and I am so glad it’s get such an amazing video I’ll be looking forward to when you tackle the series next.
4 is my all time favorite. I've never had the chance to play 3 but it seems really interesting.
6 days ago!? I thought this game was long forgotten about by now. I was just playing with the ROM hack.
I never really was a fan of EO3 and 4 but they did some cool things for the series. I think Untold onward the series really hit its stride in perfecting its gameplay loop but I appreciate just how ambitious 3 was compared to 2
27:27 Those erratic FOE patterns are in Strat 5 and post-game Strat 6 definitely.
thanks for the vid, you've pushed me to try ds emulation, really looking forward to playing EO2&3
Etrian Odyssey 3 is where I think the series "starts", and it's the only of the DS trilogy I can still stomach playing.
Nice review!
I made it to the Deep City solely by the strength of my Princess' passive healing.
Maybe you played Etrian Odyssey Mystery Dungeon, check it out
Highly anticipated video 💪
Ive never hears of or played this series but I'm interested and wanna play it now
This game is so good, well.. except the deep ones, those guys felt like reprinted forest folk, but at least we can fight their leader this time around and that reedems them.
This is the first video I came back to after the announcement of the HD remaster.
all of these games's settings give big Made in Abyss vibes
Imo i feel like it's kind of a shame that you don't talk about the other class even briefly something that happened too in your review of EO 1 and 2
2:00 dude... I'm playing my first Etrian Odyssey (4) and I named them after Hololive 4th gen. And Subaru for my ShubaLuna duo.
I like you
Some of the best EO content I've ever seen tee bee aych
Hearing such a serious tone while discussing freakin hololive is surreal.
Probably the best soundtrack of the series besides 5. Yuzo put a ton of work into this one.
This honestly has the best soundtrack of all.
Wow this game looks awesome, surely this game doesn't cost an arm and a leg to have a physical copy.
And only sleep and head/arm binds affect damage in most games)
Secondly, the game wasn't hard. There were some pretty difficult side sea bosses (which I probably did too early judging by how late the ship upgrades came), an enemy in S5 that would barely/almost 1HKO me (which I imagine you are supposed to avoid by exploring at night/day, and fighting it was just a matter of "can I take a hit with DEF buff") and the final boss (who I just didn't know hated my Princess' buffs, and folded in a few turns after unnecessary grinding)
The problem wasn't difficulty. The problem was that the game was fucking boring in comparison to EO4, all the 3DS games I played afterwards (EDIT: Besides like EMD or PQ1 and maybe 2, but who even cares?), and hell, even EO1 (which had more simple gameplay, but also tighter balance with harder enemies/bosses, where my characters felt like they were actually progressing and contributing, with battles that would sometimes end at just barely enough HP/TP)
Since you brought up ailments, my team only had Gladiator, Monk and Arbalist with skills to provide them.
Some notes on this:
• General consensus is that the 4 floor stratum is because they needed space for the Sea Quests, which are good in their own right, with a final boss fight against the Elder Dragon that, frankly, makes for a better sendoff *than the actual super boss.*
• Floor 25 is *Heavily Implied* to basically be the Abyssal God.
Ive always thought it was for the different endings replaying.
You need to give a shot to EOV (definitly the best one). Great review tho
My first game in the “E.O.” series and still my favorite! (Although all of them are pretty good!)
I know most people prefer to choose shogun than yggdroid. But i really love yggdroid, and the only class that cant be subclass from another classes
My one complaint about this game is that it doesn’t exactly deserve its E10+ rating.
Marine being a cute but useless mascot is on brand tho.
Etrian Oddesy untold 3: The alien Buccaneer.
Coming to the nintendo switch early 2023.
I have played Etrian Odyssey series for a while and I am surprised there's newer people having a interest in the series and enjoying it.
Lessssssgo i was waiting for this one!
Good review!
Yes! On to the 3DS titles soon!
Loving the game, although it is kicking my ass. Worth the amount to get a physical copy
Do you have any plans on doing a review for Ys 9 btw?
I'd say 5 is my favorite in the series
Nexus DRAGS too long but I did play on heroic so....
Is Nexus too fat compare to the other?
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809

YES. YESSSSSSSSSS
What's your take on Undernauts Labyrinth of Yomi?
Still need to play that at some point, as well as games by that developer. Saw a recent teaser for future Experience games and it featured art that I'm pretty sure was Himukai's. ruclips.net/video/-pKUYgEIrto/видео.html
i have two mages one monk fist healer and one archer my cloudia barbarian
Bro what is Mandalore doing here ?????!!!
is that Fred Savage at 5:44? i feel like i'm missing some context
Look at the enemy name at the top when Fred Savage shows up.
@@Aboveup that's crazy. i was too confused to notice the name when it flashed by😂
@@immanisaur It was on my mind every time I fought that enemy, so I just threw that in there as a joke in the video. No worries.
Oh this should be nice
*Marine pops up on screen*
Oh no...
Love the series, though, the only one i have finished, Is the IV AND i fucking loved that game story, still currently playing the first remake, fatal error to change clases.
"Rushia"
im sad now.
Arbalist seriously broken you can max attack stats before max level lol
AHOY
Can somebody tell me why getting poison in these game are like getting inflicted with instant death? Poison take out like 75% of hp.
Let's gooo
ur voice is so unique
