Bless them all, as a kid growing up in the 60/70s I knew all about the RN Field Gun Race, the history from The Boer War and why Devonport shouted 'Oggie, Oggie, Oggie!' My Mum and Dad both RAF veterans of WWII took me to The Royal Tournament twice in the late 60s and both times Devonport raced on the side we were sitting. I was a Devonport supporter from then as the MC encouraged all neutrals to cheer for the team nearest to them. The atmosphere and tension was amazing, it is such a shame it had to finish. We as a nation have lost too much tradition and are worse of for it.
I also grew up with this. And loved to watch it. Granted the history behind it is not the best of thoughts. War is never good. But put you foot on the other shoe. These guys had to do it. Or they were treated as a traitor. I would like to see some these SJWs doing something like this. 😂😅
I agree. Dad took me as a young lad back in the seventies. The crowd literally went mental when the teams marched out and the arena came alive!.. An amazing spectacle to watch!. Disgraceful it was cut!.
I had to watch and see what this is all about ! My daughter 's boyfriend is in the navy and yeasterday to drove down to Portsmouth to watch him take part in a competition against the army and RAF. How exciting but hard work !
Schofield must have beaten off a lot of competition to commentate this. I’m sure a few randomers got beaten off as well just for the hell of it. He did say he was exhausted.
Pompey last win in 87, crickey... the medic with Devonport that year, they were the best crew that year. If they did not win the 97 competition, then their 87 would be their last
too extreme for the Olympics people normally break limbs if they fail to do anything correctly for example the wall part its self the slats numbers if they let go they get the wheel to their back and the wall stopping them from escaping
@1978ajax I wasn't worried. I knew it wasn't REAL [As in lives in danger]. I was asking if this was a competition you could actually attend and cheer for, or if this was all staged for looks. This is something I WOULD ATTEND [If it was a real competition].
I was an American kid living in London in the 1960s and I saw this live in Wembley Station,as I recall. Unforgettable spectacle.

Centuries of military history.
Glad they are on our side.
Jolly good show.
A great piece of living history! This would be impressive as hell to see in person.
My brother was in this, I have a newspaper photo of him with the rest of the crew. It said Blonde Wiggy Wiggins..,,. He sadly died last year
The record, set in the last year, 1999, was 2 minutes 40.43 seconds.
Gotta admit, the Brits have some weird traditions that are pretty cool.
Use dto watch them train down at Whale Island when I was a kid. Loved it!
C'mon Pompey!!!!

And it's awesome :D!
Well done!
Are there many injuries doing this? I would imagine with that heavy metal flying around someone could get seriously hurt O.o

Jolly good!!!
@Pwnzistor Many occur, there's a video on MilitaryTattoo's youtube channel of a Field gunner having his head stapled.

What they don't show is all the injuries after each run.

'Tis Great Britain.
Because we're British.
I could do it at 50 try me
Is this a REAL competition?

Absolutely! The different Navy units are VERY competitive and very proud when they win. (I always support Portsmouth by the way).
