Oh yes, ramblers are notorious for flowering only once per season. There are a few exceptions to this and the David Austin Albrighton Rambler rose from my garden is a repeat flowering rambler.
I have 3 Gertrude Jekylls planted 18 inches apart........so I have a HUGE show at the beginning of Spring.....they are so beautiful.....but I need to plant some every blooming ones too - so, I really needed to hear you tonight........thank you so much - also, do any of you have Cutter Bees making circles in your rose leafs in the late Summertime? I wonder what I can do ......or do I just enjoy my roses with Holey leafs???
Awww this is amazing! so exciting to hear about your Gertrude Jekyll. I am excited about how it performs next season in my garden. It it rose slugs or saw flies infecting your roses? I usually spray the roses with neem oil spray and that helps a lot. You can also add neem meal to the soil so it helps eradicate them from the soil.
Lovely video❤ I have started growing David Austin since last year- i have Gertrude, LOS, scepter’d isle, Boscobel and Vanessa bell. Love all of them dearly, so addictive to collect more😂
I read that rambling roses flower only one month a year . I have a climber that put out long shoots with flowers only at the end and I don’t have the space to bend the shoots horizontally to get more flowers. I am looking for one can grow on a trellis with flowers for many months .
Yes, that is true for most rambling roses. But the Albrighton rambler by David Austin is a repeat bloomer and it is reblooming in my garden as I write this. Have you looked into the Pilgrim and Lady of Shallot to grow on a trellis. They are both repeat blooming roses and bloom all over the rose even from the bottom. Hope that helps.
I planted 9 of my roses as bare root roses. Here is a video of planting 3 of them: ruclips.net/video/eXPppJ3bHQM/видео.html. They have no leaves and stubby older stems to begin with but within a few weeks started growing really well. You can look to buy them at a local nursery or you can buy them in US or UK at www.davidaustinroses.com/
Hahaha so true. That’s always my dilemma. I would suggest that you start with your favorite color and look at which one will grow best in your zone and the section of the garden you want to plant it in. Hope that helps. ☺️
Golden Celebration is a beautiful DA yellow climber, I live in cool Tasmania and this is growing on my veranda, in two years the display is magnificent and always gets comments, I also have Heritage a beautiful DA light pink, extremely romantic shrub and exceptional fragrance, one of my very favourites
@@AmritaBhortake Heritage performs exceptionally well in my garden, not a huge shrub after two years but good in frost and disease resistant, it truly is a very beautiful and romantic DA and does well in my cold climate
Hi! They last for a long time on the plant. I have never counted the actual days, will do it this week for you. But they are always in different stages of bloom on the plant especially because she blooms so voraciously. I have her in kind of a wind tunnel and she is doing quite well. The only thing I would suggest doing in putting her on a trellis. Mine was growing like a shrub rose until last year when it started growing longer stems. This spring I am planning to add a trellis around her to help with the long stems. I bought this plant in 2016.
Agnieszka, thanks so much! I will definitely add that to my list. David Austin doesn't sell this one on the US website so I will look into local nurseries if they carry it. Thanks again, really appreciate it!
They don’t lose their leaves but I do a winter prune usually in late December or early January here in zone 10A and that time I take out all the foliage. Here is my detailed video on my winter pruning process: ruclips.net/video/e396hzK8Jww/видео.html Hope that helps.
Thank you for the video, I have two varieties 2 Benjamin Britton and 3 Harlow Carr. We are moving and I need to transplant them, so fingers crossed that they make it!
Your welcome! Benjamin Britton looks so darn beautiful. Love that two toned color. How did they do in your garden? Did you like them? Good luck with the move!
@@AmritaBhortake I had them in the front yard and from what I can see from the rooting it was doing pretty good for just a over a year in the ground from bare root. I plan on adding either snow goose or iceberg climbing to the front of the house in between two Harlow Carr.. I’ll do plan on setting up a large arch in the back with iceberg
The colors and shapes of the flowers look similar but I Pat Austin looks like it is more upright shrub than the Lady of Shallot (which can grow as a climber). If you want Pat Austin, it might be worth looking into Lady of Shallot but just fyi, it grows as a shrub or a climber. It depends how you prune it.
Excellent video and I smiled when I saw how much you love Lady of Shalott (I love it too!). I got one in shrub format, propagated it and the second plant turned into a climbing one! I have another David Austin rose called Emily Bronte which is also gorgeous & incredibly charming (shrub rose). It requires a bit more patience in the beginning (Lady of Shalott is a beast in comparison!) but it is so worth it. I am considering getting a Bathsheba climbing rose next.
This gives me so much joy! She is such a beauty, right? I absolutely love her. I was thinking of getting Emily Bronte. Just ordered Pilgrim, Strawberry Hill and Gertrude Jekyll for this spring and am so excited to have them in the garden.
@@AmritaBhortake She sure is! Oh that is so exciting. I was considering Pilgrim. In the end, I ordered the Bathsheba. I would definitely recommend Emily Bronte. The flowers have so much grace and are so intricate. Very fragnant, much more than Lady of Shalott (I refer to her as Lady S). Free flowering, not quite the powerhouse that Lady S is but still very good. She does have a slightly slower, more controlled growing habit. I see Emily Bronte as the perfect English lady, whereas Lady S is brash, bold and beautiful. I love them both for different reasons.
@@costask3404 Hahaha that made me lol. I adore how you described Lady S (perfect name btw). She definitely is brash, bold, and beautiful. I say this as I look at my gorgeous plant that is growing in 20 directions and it's only March. Lol. Emily Bronte is definitely on my list and as soon as I have some room for a shrub rose, I might add her to my garden.

"Pink cloud climbing rose" is a fast and strong growing, deep pink rose that blooms ALL summer, from may until late October. if deadheaded well. Her scent is a bit low key but she looks gorgious in my garden.
All roses look perfect in pictures but I would love to see how they behave in heavy rains of Ohio. Two of my young roses actually break their flower heads or even their canes under some rains here. Any robust roses suggestions?
Hi Maya, I recently made a video about my rose garden and it has all the climbing roses from my own garden. You can take a look there to see how they look in my garden. Here is a link to the video: ruclips.net/video/pQliinE1nqg/видео.html I would recommend starting with one rose and seeing how it does in your climate and zone and then building up upon that. Hello Ma'am . Love from India. I have some David Austin climber like Crown princess Margaretta, Spirit of freedom , The Wedgewood rose , The Generous Gardner, Teasing Georgia, Tess , The lady of the lake ( Rambler ), Abraham Darby etc & doing very well in Indian tropical climate. Some David Austin Shrubs perform like climber .
Hi Sonali, thanks so much for this response. I have so many questions 😁. Where did you buy these plants from? Does David Austin ship to India? Also, I am curious. How do your climbers bloom during the year? Do they take a break and bloom again?
@@AmritaBhortake Hi. Mine all DA bought from puspanjali pranabir (Kolkata) , KSG (Banglore) & Sikkim in India. David Austin do not ship rose plant in India. I don’t know what kind of colors you are looking for but here are a few options that will do well in zone 5: The Generous Gardener, Strawberry Hill, Lady of Shallot and James Galway.
Tbh, I don't grow any of my roses for rose hips as I want to maximize the flowers on my rose. I am quite diligent in dead heading the roses so that they don't form rose hips. Having said that, David Austin recommends Malvern Hills, The Lark Ascending and Tottering by Gently for rose hips. I have noticed that my James Galway roses also form rose hips quite easily. Hope this helps!
Zones are based on the USDA (US dept of Agriculture) Plant hardiness zone map and they go from 1 -13. The purpose of the zones is to identify how well plants will withstand the cold winter temperatures of these zones. UK lies in the USDA plant hardiness zones 6 through 9. Hope that helps!
What zone are you in? I’m in 9b, hot humid Houston. I have a few DA roses. They are babies. But DA roses have a mixed reputation for our area. Everyone loves them but some don’t do well here.
@@AmritaBhortake yes I think so. Our humidity is crazy. And it gets really hot. Lots of fungus and pests. But there are varieties of roses that do well here. I’m very jealous of your Cali weather! 😀
@@AmritaBhortake There you go! I started with roses this year and have been obsessing. Have Emily Bronte, Roald Dahl and Desdemona bare root. So far so good and I definitely want more DA roses. But I'm practicing restraint as I get used to the care and make sure I'm up for the challenge. Your vids are very inspirational and you are a delight! Thanks for the responses.
Which part of States are you located and what is your zone ? I am in Orlando, Florida zone 9 B. Besides the Pilgrim which other roses blooms not only on the tips but also the bottom bec i am getting a number of roses as climbers for a first time . Thank you so much ! 🌹🌹🌹
I been watching your old vlogs. Zone 10 A you must be in CA. You got great weather for roses. We in Florida have humidity all yr round n very hot with tons and tons of rain and tons of bugs and black spots.
Hello, I am based in San Diego and yes it is zone 10. I hear you about the humidity in Florida. That can be brutal on the plants. I would look into lady of shallot (I have it and absolutely adore it) and Strawberry hill (planted a new one in my garden last season so it's still tiny but still blooming well but need a few more years until I can tell how it performs.)
Thanks ! I bought Teasing Georgia on seeing your other video of DA roses to have but I see her missing in the list of climber ? Let me know . Now I am wondering if I made the right choice for climber
It is a beautiful climber. I wanted to include a few more options for people to consider so didn’t include it in this list. Did yours start flowering yet? What are your thoughts on it?
@mstormy I am not sure because I haven’t seen any rose hips on them. If you are asking specifically about the Pilgrim rose, it is a grafted rose so I bought it as such and also was a bare root rose when I bought it.
Gertrude Jekyll pronounced Jeekle. I didn't know either. From Australia, looking for a rose for my unloved rental. A David Austin rose would be perfect.
R u growing in India. I am from lahore. Roses doesn't perform well there there are few that performs but I Like old chalice chapped roses. And they don't retain. Shape
Hi Hassan, I grow these flowers in US. Have you tried planting David Austins? I have heard one of my subscribers from India grew them in India with beautiful results. What kind of weather do you have where you live?
Liz, I am probably going to wait until spring to buy the bare root ones. I like growing them as they are older plants, I think 2 years vs 1 year old potted David Austins.
Thank you! I appreciate your information! Did you find that rose which blooms from spring till the frost? I' m looking for that kinde of rose also 🥰. Thank you!
Thanks so much, Annette. I use an organic gardening approach towards the roses. The one pesticide that I found tremendously helpful with roses is Neem oil. I use it early in the mornings. That keeps most of the pests away. I struggle with Powdery mildew on one rose variety that I grow and this year I used Copper fungicide on it on the onset of spring and was hugely successful in little or no powdery mildew all season long. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

When they wouldn’t grow in the ground I dug them up and put them in large pots with better soil but it got so blasted hot it shut them down last year. One thing I had not tried was fertilizing with rose food. I was using 13-13-13. So I’m doing fertilizer just for roses. Let’s see what that does this year. I had a gorgeous Gertrude rose but I killed it. I was so sad about that. Anyway I’ll try this good fertilizer and see what happens

Thanks so much for the kind words. Hahaha I absolutely feel this. Aren’t they just darling?
Did you plant the bare roots of the roses? How tall were your plants when you planted them? Could you recommend a place to purchase them. Thank you!
Wonderful selection of roses. So many choices, how to decide!
Wow, that sounds wonderful. Heritage looks so stunning! I have never seen it before. How does she perform in the garden?
@@AmritaBhortake Heritage performs exceptionally well in my garden, not a huge shrub after two years but good in frost and disease resistant, it truly is a very beautiful and romantic DA and does well in my cold climate
@LeeJahn-ih9xu That’s great to know! I will definitely add it to my list.
Thank! for your clip.
From Thailand, I have
James Galway,Lady of Shalott,
Charles Darwin and Golden Celebration
Oooooh such gorgeous flowers! How long do Charles Darwin and Golden Celebration bloom in your garden? Do they take a break?
Thanks for this great overview of these beautiful roses.
Your welcome. I am so glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful.
Hi! How does the Shallot blooms last? Do they last long on the plant or do they fall apart quickly? And do they do well in windy areas? Thank you!
Hi as regards lady of shalott I believe it depends how you prune it weather or not it becomes a climber or not
Ahhhh that makes a lot of sense looking at my Lady of Shallot plant. Thanks so much for the info!
Hi , I would recommend Spirit of Freedom - blooms all season !
Agnieszka, thanks so much! I will definitely add that to my list. David Austin doesn't sell this one on the US website so I will look into local nurseries if they carry it. Thanks again, really appreciate it!
I was wondering if david Austin roses lose their leaves in winter at all ?
They don’t lose their leaves but I do a winter prune usually in late December or early January here in zone 10A and that time I take out all the foliage. Here is my detailed video on my winter pruning process: ruclips.net/video/e396hzK8Jww/видео.html
Hope that helps.
@@steveo_o6707 That sounds absolutely wonderful. I am sure it will look gorgeous with the white flowers of Iceberg. Good luck!
What is the difference between Lady of Shallot and Pat Austin? I wanted to get Pat Austin really bad but it is not for sale anymore.
@@AmritaBhortake Strawberry Hill looks great ! I almost bought one; Not very fragrant though. I have lady of shallot, first year and I love it !
@@mypreciousgarden The strawberry hill has started shooting up new leaves from its bare root state and I am looking forward to seeing it's first bloom.
"Pink cloud climbing rose" is a fast and strong growing, deep pink rose that blooms ALL summer, from may until late October. if deadheaded well. Her scent is a bit low key but she looks gorgious in my garden.
What a gorgeous bloom! I will definitely add her to my list. Thanks so much for the recommendation.
Such gorgeous roses! Love all your collections ! Thanks!

I would recommend starting with one rose and seeing how it does in your climate and zone and then building up upon that. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy gardening!
A rose among weeds. That's what you are Amrita darling!!🌿🌹☘️😉👍
Omg hahahaha that cracked me today. Thanks for your kind words.
@@AmritaBhortake 😁👍
Which rose do you recommend for rose hips?
Tbh, I don't grow any of my roses for rose hips as I want to maximize the flowers on my rose. I am quite diligent in dead heading the roses so that they don't form rose hips. Having said that, David Austin recommends Malvern Hills, The Lark Ascending and Tottering by Gently for rose hips. I have noticed that my James Galway roses also form rose hips quite easily. Hope this helps!
What do zones mean I’m in UK 🇬🇧 and never heard of this ?
Zones are based on the USDA (US dept of Agriculture) Plant hardiness zone map and they go from 1 -13. The purpose of the zones is to identify how well plants will withstand the cold winter temperatures of these zones. UK lies in the USDA plant hardiness zones 6 through 9. Hope that helps!
thank you for the video Amrita.
Glad you enjoyed it, Rob. Thanks so much for the kind words.

One of my subscribers suggested trying Mainaam gardens in India. They sell David Austin roses.
Second time watching your video. Great information about these roses!
Thanks so much for your kind words. It made my day that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful.
What zone are you in? I’m in 9b, hot humid Houston. I have a few DA roses. They are babies. But DA roses have a mixed reputation for our area. Everyone loves them but some don’t do well here.
I am zone 10A, now 10B. That's interesting but I can see why. Do they have a lot of issues with powdery mildew or other pests?
@@AmritaBhortake yes I think so. Our humidity is crazy. And it gets really hot. Lots of fungus and pests. But there are varieties of roses that do well here. I’m very jealous of your Cali weather! 😀
That makes sense. Hahaha well some benefits of the high taxes and prices. 😄
@@AmritaBhortake There you go! I started with roses this year and have been obsessing. Have Emily Bronte, Roald Dahl and Desdemona bare root. So far so good and I definitely want more DA roses. The yellow ones
@mstormy I am not sure because I haven’t seen any rose hips on them. If you are asking specifically about the Pilgrim rose, it is a grafted rose so I bought it as such and also was a bare root rose when I bought it.

How you combat insects to your rose they are gorgeous
Thanks so much, Annette. I use an organic gardening approach towards the roses. The one pesticide that I found tremendously helpful with roses is Neem oil. I use it early in the mornings. That keeps most of the pests away. I struggle with Powdery mildew on one rose variety that I grow and this year I used Copper fungicide on it on the onset of spring and was hugely successful in little or no powdery mildew all season long. Hello 👋🏼 ☺️
David Austin is by far the most beautiful of all roses. The quality is outstanding. However I’ve killed almost every rose I’ve set in the ground or pot. I’m not sure what I’ve done but i can’t seem to figure it out. I live In Missouri.
Awww I am so sorry to hear that. Is it because of the weather (micro -climate) or do you get a lot of pests on them?
@@AmritaBhortake I’m thinking it’s soil. It’s high acid and I know it should be higher ph.
@@bwiseok I hope it works this year. For fertilizer, try amending the soil with alfalfa meals and worm castings. Alfalfa is one of my fav fertilizers for roses.
I live in central Illinois and have had incredible success with roses developed by Dr Griffiths Buck. They were bred to survive the harsh Iowa winters where he lived. I buy mine from Heirloom Roses but they can be difficult to source from most rose growers. Some of my Bucks roses I have had for over twenty years. My favorites are Hawkeye Belle, Carefree Beauty and Winter Sunset. Like you I was an unsuccessful rose grower until I found this group of gorgeous roses.

The roses are the same it just depends how you grow it.
