I was very young when saw this terrific match in Portugal by TV. At the very start of the game,N.I. supporters throwned some petards behind Manuel BENTO,Portuguese best ever goalkeeper! Was really scary and intimidatory athmosphere then, in Belfast. And in spite the defeat,Portugal did a great performance since that team and generation was incredible talented but also unlucky. In that time (1981),Portugal Football Association haven't yet reached the level of ORGANIZATION and PROFESSIONALISM that they have nowadays...and it reflected in the performance of the several National Teams! ( Was a major disaster for European and World football haven't see EUSEBIO play after England1966,where he was giant...and for him, too!) But in that generation of Portugal 81, there was also great footballers that Europe didn't watch play properly in Spain1982 : Minervino PIETRA (Benfica),Joao ALVES (Benfica,Salamanca,PSG), Antonio OLIVEIRA (FC Porto, Betis Seville), COSTA (FC Porto), Rui JORDAO (Benfica,Zaragoza,Sporting Lisbon), CARLOS MANUEL (Benfica,Sporting Lisbon).Only the last two of them were later,in Euro Champioship,in France1984,where Portugal was the best team together with France of Platini,Tigana,Giresse,Bartez...where Fernando CHALANA showed what is play football in its high level of purity and class (I do recommend to all football lovers to watch the Demi-Final match between FRANCE-PORTUGAL,in Marseille,a real hymn to the best ever football and see that Portugal had Chalana much time before that Argentina got Messi! That's why Portugal do not envy Messi or Maradona when we had Eusebio, Joao Alves,Oliveira,Chalana, Paulo Futre,Luis Figo,Rui Costa,Simao,Quaresma and Cristiano Ronaldo. But in this very day,in Belfast,Northern Ireland was simply brilliant, did a great match full of wish and brave attitude and did deserve go play in Spain82 !!! In my opinion, that was the best ever Northern Ireland national team...without stars like George Best but very strong collectively,as it was showed later during the World Cup,in Spain82. ONGRATULATIONS, NORTHERN IRELAND !!! Great match. Well deserved qualification.

You are more or less right, tem razon, mais o menos.Bento was playing well and there was no way we,Northern Ireland, was going to score then an idiot threw a bottle onto the pitch behind the goal, not near Bento but onto the pitch,Bento looked round and saw another bottle land at the side of the pitch,he completely lost concentration and yes was scared.A coulpe of minutes later the ball was crossed and we scored.I am convinced that if the idiots hadn't thrown the bottles we wouldn't have scored. The atmoshphere that night was electric and very, very intimidatory because of the importance of the match and political events in Northern Ireland.I always remember Bento as Benfica played Liverpool at that time and he had a great moustache, all Portugues players at the time did,and was sad to read that he died a couple of years ago.Tenho uma morada em Portugal.

Windsor Park, home of Linfield FC. The Oval is the home of Glentoran.

That was Windsor Park as it had been pretty much since the 1930s. The stand opposite the camera was replaced in 1982 by the current North Stand, the Kop behind the goal to the left was replaced with a proper stand in the mid-90s [more on that in a moment] The Railway End behind the right goal was closed in the early 2000s but not redeveloped until the South stand, from where the camera was situated, was replaced by the recent redevelopment in the last decade. During that redevelopment, Windsor Park came horrifically close to a stadium disaster when, after a game, the stand behind the left goal was found to have dangerously come close to collapsing while full. Had it happened, dozens or more could have died. The stand was knocked down and included in the redevelopment. Today Windsor is a small but neat 21st Century stadium, though it's 1982 North Stand now looks a little out of place. The atmosphere in the stadium these days is also very different from what it was in 1981 and is much more family and visiting fan-friendly.
