@@imnugget8085 bruh just because there's a few bad apples doesn't mean every band is bad. Rappers must be bad too because certain rappers are arseholes too
If you notice, the bands are from like 20 years ago. Nowadays it's "cool" to treat nardwar with mad respect, and all the rapper interviews are recent. Even if they hate nardwar and people "like him", they'll still treat him very kind because it's good PR, because of videos exactly like this. What I want to see, is interviews from 20 years ago, where people treated him super kind. Back then it was a kind of schtick to treat journalists this way, so it would be extra impressive to see an old video of someone treating nard, who wasn't even close to as famous, with mad respect based on human interaction alone and not clout like it is nowadays.
Some rock artists/bands don't treat him like trash. Jello, former lead vocalist of the Dead Kennedys, was only slightly snarky/sarcastic in the first few, which were from the late 80s and early 90s respectively, but didn't treat Nardwuar like trash in any of them. Henry, the guy in the first clip with the grey shirt, did another thirteen years later, where he was clearly much more polite and respectful, rather than being as rude as he was in the initial interview. But yeah, Blur and Sonic Youth were absolute jerks in those interviews. No two ways about it. Especially with the Sonic Youth one, you don't break someone's record that they bought specifically for you as a gift.
The rock bands didn’t respect him because they felt like he was a nerd and wasn’t “ cool “but the rap artist loved it because he did his research so it felt like he cared. That’s the difference.
No back in the day before nardwuar interviewed rap artists his whole schitck was he would ask intrusive questions to try and provoke the artist he's since changed and now has the "nice guy" persona
Nardwuar is a punk rock legend, most rappers are punk fans but its so sad that so many punk-alternative musicians were such posers that they thought treating one of the sweetest people on the planet was part of the "punk" attitude. Treating people like shit and being a general ass has nothing to do with punk and it makes me so happy that so many rappers are carrying on some of the best attributes of the genre.
if nardwar was a random with no following at all i bet those rappers would just tell security to shoo him away... you really cannot compare interviews from 20-30 years to today to judge someone's character. like you said it was part of the "punk rock image" to treat interviewers like this, but also nardwar did not have the same reputation as he does today. It's been known in modern times that treating nardwar without respect is just plain bad PR.
Have to give him props he broke through the usual barriers to get to the artists that definitely is punk rock. But sometimes you catch an artist on bad night problems with the performance drama within the band etc. Usually after a show the bands just want to chill and Nardwar gets in their face. Thurston Moore helped get my sisters book produced Punk House seems like a good guy but maybe caught him on a bad night. Rappers seem to enjoy publicity I had an online magazine Publicity Whore so I know a bit of the game. I've tracked down band artists for interviews now just get a photo quick conversation but I live in SEA so just the ones who come out here that I can connect with or even put on shows with as well. Nardwar created a name and gets the interview and knows who he's chatting with as well. He made it on his own so have to give him props in a the competitive crazy world of the entertainment industry.
In the first interview the member of the band was being unprofessional and childish. Thurston more is an artist he was trying to be cool with Nardwar. Some artists don't want to be bothered its their right and usually interviews are set up through pr people or even photos. Its tough to break through though and Nardwar got in their not sure now if he contacts the bands via online or just shows up. I grew up around punk rock in the 80s and 90s in the Inland Empire also rappers as well. Its funny as Thurston Moore wrote "most punks are nice people" think now a lot of us older not into the destructive behavior that destroyed the scene in the early 80s. Imagine though this guy throwing a microphone in your face right after a performance at times that can be annoying I'm sure. Though he made a name for himself on the internet without the internet many would not have careers these days in the entertainment industry. I left just before the boom happened right before social media became huge as it did. Though moving to Asia discovering real people who struggle through barriers most Westerners would never understand is eye opening to say the least. Next I hope to explore Europe the scene is a lot bigger over there working on my own writing projects as well.
THIS! Not defending how anyone treated him, but it feels like the initial gimmick with Nardwuar was to be an instigating, overbearing, and annoying fanboy parody. He dresses eccentrically, his voice is screechy, his questions are extra personal, and some have even commented on his odor in the past and present. People aren't going to accept that out of the gate as something to be respected or endured, especially if you don't go away when they show general disinterest or outright aggression. He's called the human serviette for a reason. The man deserves all the daps and respect in the world, but let's not pretend and say he initially didn't intend to incite a negative reaction.
@@ItDoesntMatterReally he also asked really creepy questions, the case with blur was pulling out a photo of a band members ex (who wasnt famous) and asking questions about his sex life.

Idk about Sonic Youth but I think Dave Rowntree has already done his time at least for that incident. Its been 20 years and he's gotten off the drugs since then and made numerous statements about his remorse about the interview. Though you can dislike him for many other reasons (particularly political ones, if you're so inclined)!
Not at first but afterwards Rollins was extremely nice to nardwuar. I think for Rollins he had lots of interviews that probably tried to really attack or try to paint him a certain way. But nardwuar knew exactly what questions to ask him. And you can see the change during the interview.
No Wave underground royalty for 15 very brief minutes. Read Kim Gordon's book Girl In A Band for some more lovely insights on her sterling personality. 🙃
I'm about Nardwuar's age and I am so happy that he is getting more respect from Gen Z, and I always tell my peers to stop and take the time to talk to kids these days, they have something to say.
The reason Dave Roundtree behaved how he did was because he was an alcoholic at the time. He says he watches his Nardwuar interview every time he gets tempted to drink again. By contrast, as far as I know, Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch never had the bravery to apologize to him, the cowards.
Not only booze, but also coke. Not a good combo. I’m not justifying his actions, but both substances really deteriorate one’s mental health over time. I respect Dave for actually apologizing and even writing a letter to Nard the next day after the interview. Sonic Youth on the other hand…
Edit: I have since changed my view on this, as stated in a later comment. I’ll never respect someone that bullies what they perceive to be the weakest person in the room. He only apologised due to the scrutiny, and if Nardwuar hadn’t become what he is today, that apology would never come arrived. He’s a coward in wolf’s clothing.
his research style resembles the basic FBI field screening for anyone who applies for public trust clearance. 1) call family members 2) call neighbors of family members.

@torquetheprisoner You're not wrong. Dave had a drinking problem and used cocaine frequently. He has extremely poor behaviour in a few interviews, but his mic would either be turned off, or the cameras would focus on the other members. Damon Albarn also had drug issues later in life, but he did his best to focus on a cleaner image. Thankfully Damon branched off, and created Gorillaz.
I'm sure he was bullied his whole life and then when he finally found someone he could pick on it turned him into the bully that he always hated. Man looks like he's the captain of the debate team.

When I was younger, Rock was supposed to be the, “alternative” genre where the weirdos, rejects & outcasts were accepted. Seeing this video it just looks like the once bullied are now the bullies. (If the cliche fits of course). It’s so disheartening. I must admit it’s extremely sad seeing these grown adults act like middle school bullies. I’m glad the Rap & Hip-Hop community have enough heart to appreciate Nardwuar. That was so beautiful to see. Also I love every interaction between Nardwuar & Tyler the Creator. I’m glad to see that none of these rock bands were ones that I remotely like. Sonic Youth definitely went down to a 0% for me.
I played in a ton of no-name rock bands and played alongside lots of similar bands. Some were cocksure assholes (Devil Wears Prada) and some were cool as fuck (The Swellers). There is definitely a link between being a self-serving dickhead and achieving high popularity. If you don't care about other people then it's easy to use and abuse whatever resources (including people) will raise your status. It's a safe assumption that any band that were raised to high status were led by at least one asshole member. Talent and ability have nothing to do with it. I've seen and heard countless bands who made killer, mind-blowing music, but never got recognition because they weren't in the game to garner praise or reinforce their fragile ego. They were just doing what they loved because they loved to do it, and had a blast doing it with friends while going on to lead normal nobody lives.
Ya gotta think how he came off when he first started he seems like a wierdo but thats his character i can see why lydia lunch wasnt interested in an interview seems like a serious person and nardwar def isnt serious

You’d expect outcasts to treat fellow outcasts alike and with respect and love but some people are just simply fueled by their hateful inner emotions .
He was a much more antagonizing interviewer back then. This interview is awfully out of context.
@@bfg_pz2213yup. Before social media, we didn’t know who Nardwuar was and his entire persona and schtick came across as one of an annoying troll, not an endearing fan boy who lavishes his interviewees with trivia and gifts.
The word started spreading about how great of an interviewer he was and it helped to earn him a reputation where musicians were looking forward to the interview.
In the early days, a lot of musicians were annoyed by his over the top persona. David Cross called him out on it. Even in later years, you could see Marc Maron not being into it, and Kid Cudi literally left because he’d had enough.
Everyone loves him now as an adorable geek, but he’s also softened his approach and has become more inviting and not as antagonistic as he became more well known.

Most rappers spend their youth writing introspective and poetic 16 bar essays. They are in fact nerds themselves.
Yes your right
Nardwuar is a punk rock legend, most rappers are punk fans but its so sad that so many punk-alternative musicians were such posers that they thought treating one of the sweetest people on the planet was part of the "punk" attitude.
Sonic youth members are posers now because they don't fit in your narrow definition of a genre formed decades before your birth. Haha
Nothing more punk rock than proper manners.
Seeing him getting bullied was breaking my heart, he’s such a genuine person
I think its really showing how most of the interviews where he gets disrespected are his older ones. He’s really come to gain a ton of respect.
