The backing tracks, which seem so random and chaotic to many listeners, are really very carefully composed and rehearsed and played by supremely talented musicians. The way that Van Vliet employs extreme rhythmic syncopation and his use of space is not unlike the methods of Thelonious Monk, the other true American musical iconoclastic genius of the mid twentieth century.
I'm a vet of numerous Fillmore shows, Woodstock '69, CBGB;s etc. I saw this band play in NYC 1/'1971, but with 2 drum kits and Elliot Ingmer on 2nd axe. The ferocity of their appearance and playing, to my mind is still unmatched against all shows I've attended.
There´s also the TMR final rehearsal with no vocals on Grow Fins CD set. Shows you in an incredible detail the guitars interplay, and all... just after that, they went to studio and recorded it all one take (exl. Blimp, China Pig and 2 old numbers already recorded) - note to note 100% perfect. A feat no one ever can duplicate. That´s the Magic Band for you 🤗
With Jeff Cotton gone, Mark Boston really steps up. It's amazing how Bill Harkleroad is able to carry every song with one guitar. Artie Tripp adds delightful counterpoint throughout, but my ears miss Jeff here.
It is always illuminating to hear Beefheart tracks without vocals, especially from Trout Mask or Lick My Decals, due to their complex arrangements/performance, which is not true of most rock music presented without the vocal tracks. Big thank you for uploading!
They were all playing in different time signatures usually, so counting down wouldnt work well. John French decided he would just scream "and!" and they would play.
It's John French (Drumbo) shouting "And!". Since many tracks had parts in different time signatures a traditional count-in was pointless, so he settled on just shouting "And!".
i love captain beefheart on vocals but the band playing instrumentals on recordings way to me it goes more very interesting musically specially on demos and rehearsals, to me to me to me it sounds like proto: math-rock, post-rock, grunge and similar weird cool things
DON VAN VLIET (CAPTAIN BEEFHEART): Harmonica, Sax BILL HARKLEROAD (ZOOT HORN ROLLO): Lead & Slide Guitar MARK BOSTON (ROCKETTE MORTON): Bass Guitar ART TRIPP III (ED MARIMBA): Marimba, Drums & Percussion JOHN FRENCH (DRUMBO): Drums & Percussion
This makes me want to start a kar-o-kee show at the reno senior ctr.... they just don't know the tunes. I tried a dancing queen version like gibby from the b.h.s., it didn't go over well...bob
This music 🎵 is the equivalent of the alien language in the film "Arrival" it is past present and future all at once ,it is non linear , absolutely awesome even more left field than TMR !¡
Is there any chance you could create a download for these tracks? I would love to have them in high quality. Downloading youtube videos tend to chop the quality up a bit.
Knowing how the creative process actually went, it's not only interesting but also musically pleasing to hear these tracks unspoilt. Beefheart had a great voice and wonderful poetry, but arguably that was more of an overlay on the music than that the whole were an integral composition by his hand. I've always liked the groovier stuff better - it was still special enough. On this album Woe-Is-Uh-Me-Bop is probably my favorite.
you can do that yourself; take the original decals tracks and these instrumentals, put them in audacity, INVERT the instrumental track, line up the waves so they the peaks are directly opposite of eachother (not hard, just zoom in!), and you should get isolated vocals that way. if that doesn't work than do it reverting the other track.
@@Buccarado phase cancelation rarely ever works quite like that with analog sources, especially those which have been pitch shifted (like these recordings) - the best way for extracting vocals from Decals would be thru something like iZotope RX 9 Advanced's Music Rebalance tool
The latest delusion I have is that Captain Beefheart communicates with me from the underworld (he is dead) through his moustache. and that explains why I had an episode while hearing his song "hair pie", with my head changing size & shape. he was sending a message to me telepathically. funny delusion..
Fantastic...perfect for a Beefheart Karaoke...why was it nescessary to pitchshift the tracks? Does that mean the original album was pitchshifted in some way?
I don't think the album was pitchshifted. The tape these songs were on was pitched up, though. All other sources have the same pitch as the original release.
Sounds like...the album that got them to Trout Mask Replica. Fucking genius. If I may ask, what type of tape did you take this from? An ADAT? Reel to reel?
Guess you and I are just Spudhearts, looking for a Real Potato. btw, John French looks like a Devo fan in those glasses{20:53}, or maybe it's vice versa.
One of the greatest albums of all time

Well put👍🏻
Be sure to read John "Drumbo" French's book "Beefheart: Through The Eyes Of Magic" for detailed insight into the creative process on this and TMR.
Nothing beats this Mama mia

Wow! - I can - at last! - clearly distinguish and enjoy Mark Bostons excellent bass!
Thanks!

Incredible drumming by John French on verse of first track : -D 👍
There´s whole lotta incredible Drumbo´s drumming .. here, there and everywhere 😂
21:32 amazing little section where they all lock in together.
Love this record, great to hear the musicians play as they were meant to be heard.Thank you so much for posting this gem in it’s entirety. A treasure!
Eureeka!
You've invented Captain Beefheart Karaoke !!!
Imagine if all Karaoke Bars had the Beefheart option! Anywhere, anytime, some Beefheart freak could hijack Karaoke nite!
Appreciate hearing these tracks with the guitar and bass up front in the mix -- and the period photos are wonderful!
effin glorious
Anuth'a great masterpiece from the Captain, the one & only
I like how every track starts with a scream
it means "play it right or i will hurt you"
They were all playing in different time signatures usually, so counting down wouldnt work well. John French decided he would just scream "and!" and they would play.

I agree: " What this world needs is a good two dollar room and a good two dollar broom."
It ought to be "a meme"
DON VAN VLIET (CAPTAIN BEEFHEART): Harmonica, Sax

MARK BOSTON (ROCKETTE MORTON): Bass Guitar
ART TRIPP III (ED MARIMBA): Marimba, Drums & Percussion
JOHN FRENCH (DRUMBO): Drums & Percussion
Beef & His Magic Band is the best, wtf bruh
Phenomenal Thanks so much!!! I have a boot cd with instrumental tracks.CD is called THE EARLY YEARS 59 - 69
Great stuff , very rare
you made me happy - thank you
This music reminds me of a girl I know, she has three heads, I like the three of them, although sometimes they fight among themselves.
Mm Mm!
Holy shit Ive always wanted to hear a LMDOB instrumental
Doctor Dark!
Yes, amazing track!
It took me a while to understand the middle part 4:30 - 4:49
Amazing!

A few years ago someone put up the same thing with Clear Spot....good quality instrumental versions of all the songs.......

I’d really love to hear the opposite of this, isolated vocals of Beefheart. I’ve only been able to find Buggy Boogie Woogie’s isolated vocals

if this is higher sound quality than the original, is it possible to make a better sounding version than the original with the vocals?
I wouldnt want Beefheart quieter in the mix

funny delusion..
Om Sadasiva. Are you Mental? Just asking.
Same here dude...
a hair pie is a vagina
Yeah he does that I've started leaving the toilet seat up at night tho

I have a "live at My Fathers place" album that is obviously at the wrong pitch (its too fast) I need to sort that out....
Beefheart Karoke, priceless!!! :-)
thats strange cuz I have a bootleg of Fathers Place thats too slow
Sounds like...the album that got them to Trout Mask Replica. Fucking genius. If I may ask, what type of tape did you take this from? An ADAT? Reel to reel?
This came immediately after Trout Mask
Get your facts straight first and comment later
sounds like a overture of Devo tunes, just add or substitute a little synth, beefheart was a genius, way ahead of his time .... but of course
Guess you and I are just Spudhearts, looking for a Real Potato. btw, John French looks like a Devo fan in those glasses{20:53}, or maybe it's vice versa.
...Stupid songs -- but wait - .ya we'll hmmmmmm ... yeah, okay you win - we'll call it music (harumpffff cough cough ....[clears throat ] )
intricate music often confuses some people.
You've perfectly summed up Top 40 hits.
