Your video was a life saver. My retroarch stopped working out of nowhere and couldn't read my usb. I just deleted my retroarch after backing up my games and redownloaded using your instructions. My retroarch is now more organized thanks to the provided folders. Thanks.
For anyone getting the payment issue when trying to pay for the dev mode, i was having this issue for like two hours and decided to try it with a new account, and that worked for me! Just make sure all your info is the same all throughout the account and payment process.
For anyone stuck with the directory page just keep hitting parental until you get to the page hes on, i was stuck for 30 minutes trying to figure it out. And the n64 lock is gonna be under nintendo , hope this helps someone
Sadly it's saying there's nothing the drive. Even though I've been using this drive for dolphin and xps2. Got it but its D drive on there although E on my laptop wtf 😂

Then today I got bored and thought I would try emulation on the Series X, googled guides, this came up and about 20 mins into the video I thought "this dude sounds familiar", checked the name and it realised it was you. Anyway long winded way to say you're a legend and thanks for the all the videos, they are so easy to follow and also straight to the point, I'm using all the Series X tutes right now.
That xbox usb app is a must. Just installs retro arch settings right away. Easier to do than any other game console. Every system should do this. Just pay a fee and be done with it. Instead of jailbreak.
I've set this up a few times now due to updates, and the Directory setup section always goes a bit too fast, where I need to set the speed to 0.25x. I wrote down which directories get changed and what the values are in the video so it can be easily referenced in the future - if they aren't listed, they weren't changed as far as the video goes! System/BIOS - E:\RetroArch\system Assets - E:\RetroArch\assets Thumbnails - E:\RetroArch\thumbnails Configs (Now listed as Configuration Files) - E:\RetroArch\config Core Info - E:\RetroArch\info Cheat Files - E:\RetroArch\cheats Video Shaders - E:\RetroArch\shaders Overlays - E:\RetroArch\overlays Playlists - E:\RetroArch\playlists Save Files - E:\RetroArch\saves Save States - E:\RetroArch\states System Event Logs - E:\RetroArch\logs Hope this helps! (or maybe I'll use my own comment for reference in the future at the very least) :)
I've also seen recommendations to lock additional Angle cores in addition to Mupen64 as mentioned in the video. Instructions are as follows below. Settings > Core > Manage Cores > Lock and Backup the following: Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (Mupen64Plus-Next) Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (ParaLLEI N64) Sega - Saturn (YabaSanshiro) I'm including Mupen64 for completion's sake and future reference. Personally speaking, I don't know if these additional cores are still necessary to lock and backup, but I'm just bringing this recommendation forward here as I've seen it discussed and referenced to add to the setup tips of my original post.

So I formatted my USB drive, and chose media on XBOX, but now when I connect the Harddrive to my computer to add more games, etc, I get an error and access denied. Any help would really be appreciated please.

Amazing guide! I get to the step to lock the N64 cores. When you select the manage cores menu option a list of .dll files come up, and you select the mupen64plus_next_libretro.dll. For me that list isnt there i Have just for cores for consoles that comes up. What am I missing?
If you're getting error code 400 when trying to add your Xbox console to the developer console list, typically waiting about 2 weeks and then trying again should work - that's how I solved it.

Great tutorial! My only worry so far is that after starting RetroArch, I get a (presumably unrelated) message that "Optional Data Collection is on". Can this not be disabled in dev mode?!
So I got to the point where you going to settings inside of RetroArc on your Xbox and then you go down to directory to change the file type I believe to 'f'or whatever it is for you. But for me when I click on it it says parent directory, use this directory, and no items. Those are the only options. I don't know what to do

Can you show how to manually add thumbnails to the games please? I have a list of thumbnails that I placed in the retroarch folder in thumbnails and the worked (for the most part) when I was using retail but now on dev mode none of the thumbnails I have (E folder) and the ones in the retroarch list (Q folder)are showing up in the thumbnail next to the games even when I manually scan them.

I got all the way to the following step in your guide 20:06 , but once I reached this point my "manage cores" page only shows an "Install or Manage a Core" option, so it appears that for some reason I don't have any cores downloaded by default like the way your guide shows. I went to "online updater" and tried to manually download cores, but I get an error that says: "failed to install core XXX". Any recommendations on what I could do next to get cores successfully installed on retroarch?

I essentially just restarted everything over from scratch and was able to get it to work by having mostly everything downloaded to my Xbox's internal storage except for Roms and Bios which I had on a thumb drive. For some reason doing it that way got the core downloading option to work

I want to play the old Armored core on my series S, if I buy and use the emulator only in devmode can my Xbox be banned? The only thing I want is to use the devmode in emulation and after playing go to normal mode. Is that possible?

Hello! I'm able to get retroarch installed onto Dev mode, complete all the steps and even play a game or two for a little bit. But everytime I come back to dev mode to play again, my menu screen reverts back to the 8-bit style and my USB drive suddenly isn't readable anymore and I can no longer see the games within my folder on retroarch....it happens every single time. any idea what the problem is? Is it possibly the USB? Thanks!
Is there any particular reason as to when I set my hotkeys to start select and save the configuration, it doesn't work at all during in-game? Idk what else to do, I've tried everything. I'm trying to have access to the quick menu so I can play wii games due to not letting me use my Xbox controller.

Registration into the partner program always fails when processing payment. I tried two different microsoft accounts and two different credit cards on each. Always gives a "something went wrong, please try again later" error. Contacting Microsoft about the issue is impossible as well, support line (phone) is always a bot who ends up disconnecting the call.
I accidentally set a second controller as my main input. Problem is: I don't have a second controller! So now I can't navigate/do anything in RA. Tried to find the config file via FTP to change/delete it but I couldn't. Any ideas?!
Hey, I have a problem when trying this out. Whenever I plug in the USB drive into my Xbox series X and redirect the directories to the SSD it does not show up, like there is no A, B, D, E, etc. only parent directory and no items show up.
I was satisfied with my older build of Retroarch(that I installed with the help of your video) but I’m going to have to reinstall because after Safe Exiting back to retail mode, I got an E200 error and had to factory reset. Even though I pressed the button to keep all games and apps, My Retroarch, safe exit and everything I had in Dev mode had been wiped out. So I’m starting from scratch. Has anyone else here had this problem? How can I prevent this in the future? My wife and brother also experienced this same issue on their respective Xboxes, so we’re all going through the same recovery process.
Hello David, I am not very familiar or knowledgeable with the xbox but I faced this E200 issue aswell while exiting with safe exit. The problem that is probably occuring is that you did not have enough free space on the console (that was the issue for me, i had to delete all and start from scratch). I hope you managed to find the source of the problem.
@@davidmccright3764 I read somewhere that you should atleast have 5GB free, so I am trying to keep around 10 gb free to be safe. However i cant open devkit app anymore now.. lol many problems! :(
i had the same issue. I won't install safe exit again. it looks like the auto checked delete everything is no more. When i press leave dev mode,it isn't checked anymore.Maybe they updated dev mode to do so...
Awesome video. I followed it and everything was great, but I must have done something incorrectly: I ssd a 56gb SSD however when I mapped it to my pc it shows a capacity of 5gb. Please can someone tell me where did I fail?

After following this guide, I'm running into an issue with the N64 cores. Trying to boot any N64 game gives me a "failed to open libretro core" error, but as far as I can tell, every other core (including those requiring BIOS files) are working fine. After backing up Parallel, I also updated that core just in case that solved it, but it did not. Any advice on what might have gone wrong with N64 specifically?
@@matteonompenso973 no I sent an email but no reply. I’ve refreshed the site once a day but no luck. I believe it means the servers can’t handle the load. Reddit said wait it out because it happens time to time until they fix it. If you find out anything yourself let me know.

This latest version seems to be the problem, and I don't know where I can get the previous version. Have you noticed very high latency in games? The USB directory structure has a GAMES folder. I notice that MAME is missing. I can add it, but how do you tell Retroarch to look there. Setting that directory was in the video. I didn’t see a MAME tutorial in your playlists

@@PickleThePimp I managed to buy today, basically I tried every day. I think it’s just a matter of buying when the MS servers are working. This time I used Firefox, but it probably has nothing to do with it, because I had already tried it before and it didn’t work. After filling in the address details, when the site asked for the account password again, I ended up leaving it on the password form for about 20 minutes without filling it in, as I went to resolve an issue, then I came back, filled it in and continued the process, which worked. But this waiting time probably has no relation to the success.
As of April 25th, 2024 (when i did this), using "Leave Dev Mode" does not default check the delete data option! The default method is now basically risk free.

Hey there, it seems like retroarch only recognizes my usb drive sometimes, do you have any idea what the problem is?
Is there any particular reason as to when I set my hotkeys to start select and save the configuration, it doesn't work at all during in-game? Idk what else to do, I've tried everything. I'm trying to have access to the quick menu so I can play wii games due to not letting me use my Xbox controller.

If I purchase a series s and dev mode and later upgrade to the X, would I have to purchase dev mode again and/or attach it to another XBL account or can I use the same dev mode and/or account ?

Registration into the partner program always fails when processing payment. I tried two different microsoft accounts and two different credit cards on each. Always gives a "something went wrong, please try again later" error. Contacting Microsoft about the issue is impossible as well, support line (phone) is always a bot who ends up disconnecting the call.

Is safe to use retail mode into Dev Mode?
I mean the Home experience, can i use the Retail Home?
Dev mode is an official Microsoft operating mode for Xbox consoles. Using emulation in retail mode is what is getting banned.

@@MartySims-qb8xo You should be able to transfer games to a folder on your Xbox. I use a 10 year old ext hard drive on my series x and it works great.
Hey, I have a problem when trying this out. Whenever I plug in the USB drive into my Xbox series X and redirect the directories to the SSD it does not show up, like there is no A, B, D, E, etc. only parent directory and no items show up.

Yeah! I found if you just hit parent directory non-stop it will eventually show you what you need! Hope this helps!
I was satisfied with my older build of Retroarch(that I installed with the help of your video) but I’m going to have to reinstall because after Safe Exiting back to retail mode, I got an E200 error and had to factory reset. Even though I pressed the button to keep all games and apps, My Retroarch, safe exit and everything I had in Dev mode had been wiped out. So I’m starting from scratch. Has anyone else here had this problem? How can I prevent this in the future? My wife and brother also experienced this same issue on their respective Xboxes, so we’re all going through the same recovery process.
Hello David, I am not very familiar or knowledgeable with the xbox but I faced this E200 issue aswell while exiting with safe exit. The problem that is probably occuring is that you did not have enough free space on the console (that was the issue for me, i had to delete all and start from scratch). I hope you managed to find the source of the problem.

i had the same issue. I won't install safe exit again. it looks like the auto checked delete everything is no more. When i press leave dev mode,it isn't checked anymore.Maybe they updated dev mode to do so...

After following this guide, I'm running into an issue with the N64 cores. Trying to boot any N64 game gives me a "failed to open libretro core" error, but as far as I can tell, every other core (including those requiring BIOS files) are working fine. After backing up Parallel, I also updated that core just in case that solved it, but it did not. Any advice on what might have gone wrong with N64 specifically?

@@matteonompenso973 no I sent an email but no reply. I’ve refreshed the site once a day but no luck. I believe it means the servers can’t handle the load. Reddit said wait it out because it happens time to time until they fix it. If you find out anything yourself let me know.

Good afternoon, man. I downloaded the latest version of Retroarch, but I'm having a huge latency problem in games. I've tried everything, but the problem continues. This latest version seems to be the problem, and I don't know where I can get the previous version. Have you noticed very high latency in games? I've tried everything in the settings, but if I change it, the latency in some games disappears, but the game becomes slow. It wasn't like that before. Happy New Year and thank you!
The USB directory structure has a GAMES folder. I notice that MAME is missing. I can add it, but how do you tell Retroarch to look there. Setting that directory was in the video. I didn’t see a MAME tutorial in your playlists

This time I used Firefox, but it probably has nothing to do with it, because I had already tried it before and it didn’t work. After filling in the address details, when the site asked for the account password again, I ended up leaving it on the password form for about 20 minutes without filling it in, as I went to resolve an issue, then I came back, filled it in and continued the process, which worked. But this waiting time probably has no relation to the success.

As of April 25th, 2024 (when i did this), using "Leave Dev Mode" does not default check the delete data option! The default method is now basically risk free.
