Wow! Very intellegent design. I love the extensive use of low tech on many of the systems. I also love the versatility of the pod. I've never been a fan of the big luxury cats. But I've got to say, I really love your boat. Excellent choice!

I would likely have a little ( 20- 50 sq feet /hmm apprx 5 sq mtr?) on deck garden - but have it in nets and with hydroponic drip system - that would be something to grow all your herbs and tomatoes on deck ! Thanks for your great adventure - a personal inspiration for me really. I am looking at boats, but Mono-hulls are the only ones in my price range it looks like... Currently anyway ;-) But I sure like multi-hulls - and simplicity - cheers ! - Scott and son

Thanks for the interior and deck tour, lovely boat! I have been very impressed with Wharrams after discovering your channel, brilliant design, fair lines at anchor, and under sail, beautiful! I learned to sail on a tiller steered double ender, and everything thing about a Tiki said, "This is your boat!" I was so impressed by the Tiki and Pahi designs you almost met me at the Hui, but then I discovered that unless you were lucky, buying a ready made Wharram was not an option, as used Wharrams are rare. You had to build your own boat, which takes years, or a year with a builder...... Bummer! I just don't have that kind of time, so I figured I should save myself the torture of looking. I'm hoping perhaps in the future something will come up and make it possible, we shall see. Just a thought, since you have SO much deck space, and you are a Kiwi, why don't you and the crew put together a coming into the port Haka? You are on a Polynesian catamaran after all...... :) Cheers mate!

It couldn't be any worse than making them pay homage to "Neptune" at the equator crossing! LOL! The Haka is so much a part of the New Zealand national identity it just makes sense, and it could be a bit of fun for you. I have several Kiwi friends, in New Zealand, and the US, so I am well aware the tradition. Hopefully the plans you're talking about Is making molds off of Lucky Fish for a fiberglass version of the Tiki 38, that would be fantastic! Currently Boatsmith is doing something along those lines, but they make boats that are either too large for single handing, or too small for extended cruising or live aboard. Something needs to happen to keep Wharram moving forward, either a fiberglass versions of the popular designs, or a pre-cut kit like the Mana 24.

Hi Zaya,The name Galley for a ships kitchen begins with Ancient Greek names for fish, Galea and Galei. The Romans named their helmets Galea after sea snail shells. A Galleon is a war ship with sails and rows of oars requiring a long narrow ship. These vessels often had a narrow alley, laneway, ambulant or walkway for access down the centre. Letterpress printers use a Galley an oblong tray to hold their type. Ships are fitted with Galley kitchens, oblong in shape with a narrow passage and food preparation on either side because it is the most efficient space saving kitchen design. It has become the name for kitchens in boats, planes and restaurants using this oblong narrow passage design. Who cares as long as the food tastes good? Love the wharram, beautiful crew, great videos.
I use the internet for information. I am an Australian living in Thailand. My electricity bill is enormous when I cook roast dinners, hot pots or even boiled vegetables with grilled meat. Wok cooking means a meal is cooked within 5 minutes and skilful Thai chefs often cook a meal in 3 minutes. There is a story that Mongolian Horsemen invented the wok by using their shields as cooking bowls. I think the leather arm grips would prevent that and I believe lived on mares milk and blood milked from their horses plus what they could acquisition from new territories.I am certain that the Chinese adopted the wok because it requires such a small amount of fuel to cook a meal. We use the small Asian single burner camp stoves using small pressure cans of gas that last about 30 minutes or six meals. Your barbecue looks great but my Australian barbecue used a 9kg bottle in about 3 meals. I am interested in your cooking methods and meals on the high seas. Cheers Bob

Your protruding BBQ pipe mount on your rear deck is a nasty trip hazard and even worse if at night some one has to go aft in nasty seas for any reason and has a fall. I suggest you mount it in a way so that it protrudes below the deck for safety reasons. (just meant as a positive comment).
All very practical and sensible design features. Thanks for a very thoughfully explained tour, mates! Suggestion, if you don't already have one, a wind sock/wooly for your microphone would help the audio a lot.
Hi Stew and Zaya, after seeing these last two videos I can say, Consider it SOLD! Just fill in the details of price, location and time. I was half expecting it to be home made raw timber everywhere and tiny. I will not make assumptions in future. Love the boat and not sure I would find another with all the mods you have done? Love your videos guys, Interesting and informative, and the Wharram concept (keep it simple). BUT I imagine you are possibly restricted to the tropics, since the pod could get a bit chilly, and noisy, in heavy rainfall and high winds. In saying that:- why leave the tropics if you can avoid it. Great work all round and please keep it up.
Thanks very much. Yes, she is a 30N to 30S boat in my view but many, many Wharrams are owned, sailed and loved in the higher latitudes. People add insulation, heating and enclose their deck space to make it work. Thanks for the great comment, Stew

can you detail the rope hinges on the doors through the hull please , they look a really simple and good solution , the videos are really fun , wharrams are really impressive once seen up close , with many really good details (like the rope hinges )

It starts with figure of eight stopper knot on the underside, pass through one side of hinge out the top, then you go down through the gap and back up in the otherside. And so one. I really like the mix of old school and modern. Twin vanes then pulleys to drop the motors. Love it. It's a lot different and I'm sure a unique way to cruise. What kind of speed does she get under sail? Also, while I'm asking questions.... In one of your early videos I remember an issue with a separation at the transom, was this rectified? Was it a design issue?
+Albion Parrot, thanks for picking up on the blend of old and new tech. Its one of the things we really enjoy about developing this boat. Picking the best from both worlds without being blinded only by one. Speed is excellent for a cruising boat, on all points of sail from sheets just cracked to dead flat off. She does half the wind speed or better up to about 12 knots wind speed tight to broad reaching. 8-9 knots with ease in 18 to 20 knot true wind. On a recent passage from Grenada to Exumas we covered 1058 miles in 6 days 21 hours ave speed 6.44 kts in a variety of conditions. Pretty respectable! Our transatlantic of 5,000 miles from Namibia to Barbados included Doldrums and awkward seas at times. We averaged 5.5 knots over all. Again, very respectable considering we had a novice crew and didnt push the boat. Re the delamination on the lapstrake, that was starboard hull forward and turned out to be an epoxy fillet that cracked away from the glass, likely due to the pounding we got in the Benguella current. It has since been glued and has presented no further problems. It was not structural thankfully! Cheers and great to get your questions, Stewart
I love the rope hinges too! What a great simple solution. Easy to inspect and replace. I have spent a lot of time learning knots and this is another use that I will keep using!

Apart from the Benguella current off Sth Africa and the equatorial soup off the coast of Brazil ( every swell from far off storms in the Sth and Nth Atlantic seem to meet there and have a bouncy castle party...) we were hit by a horrible vertical wave in the Gulf of Mexico where the Florida current (offshoot from the Gulf Stream). We are still here to tell the tale thanks to our low centre of effort and wide stable platform (without daggerboards !!) cheers from Stew

Must totally agree with Stephen. I was looking at Hunter 44DS monohull. I think I am sold on the catamaran. How often do you have to replace the forward between hull netting due to uv deterioration? Again Thanks for the video and sage advice. Marc
+Marcus Russell - we used that Pilchard net from new. I reckon it should be good for 5 years. In hindsight I would go with "supertramp" a more closed mesh design used on many of the production cats. Not sure of life expectancy. 10 years maybe?
Great tour team! Have you been happy with the Takacat? I am giving consideration to one of these as an auxiliary tender on board out 48' ocean cruising yacht. I like the fact that they can be packed down into a bag for stowage. Do you find that yours can be a bit light in strong winds and will dance around or flip? Cheers. Wade.
+Bluewater dreamin thanks! we love the takacat due to it's lightweight, stability, and semi rigid high pressure floor. we have never had it flip. when it's tethered to the stern and we are on anchor we use a short tether and keep it in the lee of the boat when the wind is up. we tow it but stow it on deck or in bags for longer trips or if it's blowing. +Zone Television, great question. Best days run so far is 190 miles. We just averaged 6.44 knots on a 700 mile leg Grenada to Long Island. Not too shabby. Fastest surf so far is 15 knots with coffee mugs sitting on the table. So stable and under control of the vane. regular surfs to 13 knots. Sustained 8-9 knots reaching, again stable and no fuss. cheers Stew

+lucky 748 Thanks for that. Thats a great question and its not an issue. Yes we get the occasional cavitation roar when steaming straight into a nasty chop but it really isnt a problem. For all the other occasions, having the weight of them in the middle of the boat plus ease of access and the maneuverability (turns on a dime) - well the plus's far outweigh the -'s in my view. I LOVE to see the up-close details of your boat. I shall be stealing liberally from as many as possible of those really nifty details in the building of my Mālolonui (Big Flying Fish) proa. Iʻm attempting, as strictly as possible, to make the construction out of nothing but wood, resin(s), fiberglass, dacron and ropework (running and standing rigging, and structural lashing). Keeping the metal at a minimum is a goal that may stretch my ingenuity, but Iʻll give it a shot. Computer-like electronics do NOT count as "metal" to me, so they'll have their place, albeit as "minimalistic" as possible. Can NOT beat those ropework hinges, by the way. Also,.. you guys should have a bi-annual (twice-a-year) raffle (for charity, or new sound equipment [hint] or somesuch) to get the latest improvised thingamawhatzit from the fertile MacGiverish minds of the denizens of the Lucky Fish! ..and I think I owe you guys more sea-shanties memorializing the "further travels of the good ship Lucky Fish". A bit difficult to do based on a "Boat Tour" video, but we'll see... Aloha nui a me mahalo ia 'olua! -Alapiko ma Mālolonui :)

Nice one Stewy and Zaya :-) I'm enthralled by the Wharram concept, mainly driven by your videos. I'm looking at changing from mono to cat as I feel as I get older it will be a tad easier on me...lol (Hope my partner doesn't see that bit, the shit she will give me ! ) I mainly do coastal with the occassional trip from oz to NZ, unfortunately my partners job and family commitments mean I do quite a bit of solo sailing. So my question is, do you think your wharram and it's rigging is conducive for soloing ? Particularly keeping in mind your comments on gaff sails. I am looking at boats, but Mono-hulls are the only ones in my price range it looks like... Currently anyway ;-)

Thanks for the interior and deck tour, lovely boat! I have been very impressed with Wharrams after discovering your channel, brilliant design, fair lines at anchor, and under sail, beautiful! I learned to sail on a tiller steered double ender, and everything thing about a Tiki said, "This is your boat!" I was so impressed by the Tiki and Pahi designs you almost met me at the Hui, but then I discovered that unless you were lucky, buying a ready made Wharram was not an option, as used Wharrams are rare. You had to build your own boat, which takes years, or a year with a builder...... Bummer! I just don't have that kind of time, so I figured I should save myself the torture of looking. I'm hoping perhaps in the future something will come up and make it possible, we shall see. Just a thought, since you have SO much deck space, and you are a Kiwi, why don't you and the crew put together a coming into the port Haka? You are on a Polynesian catamaran after all...... :) Cheers mate!

It couldn't be any worse than making them pay homage to "Neptune" at the equator crossing! LOL! The Haka is so much a part of the New Zealand national identity it just makes sense, and it could be a bit of fun for you. I have several Kiwi friends, in New Zealand, and the US, so I am well aware the tradition.
Hopefully the plans you're talking about Is making molds off of Lucky Fish for a fiberglass version of the Tiki 38, that would be fantastic! Currently Boatsmith is doing something along those lines, but they make boats that are either too large for single handing, or too small for extended cruising or live aboard. Something needs to happen to keep Wharram moving forward, either a fiberglass versions of the popular designs, or a pre-cut kit like the Mana 24.
I also like the rest of the boat a lot - sorry forgot to say that.

Hi Zaya,The name Galley for a ships kitchen begins with Ancient Greek names for fish, Galea and Galei. The Romans named their helmets Galea after sea snail shells. A Galleon is a war ship with sails and rows of oars requiring a long narrow ship. These vessels often had a narrow alley, laneway, ambulant or walkway for access down the centre. Letterpress printers use a Galley an oblong tray to hold their type. Ships are fitted with Galley kitchens, oblong in shape with a narrow passage and food preparation on either side because it is the most efficient space saving kitchen design. It has become the name for kitchens in boats, planes and restaurants using this oblong narrow passage design. Who cares as long as the food tastes good? I use the internet for information. I am an Australian living in Thailand. My electricity bill is enormous when I cook roast dinners, hot pots or even boiled vegetables with grilled meat. Wok cooking means a meal is cooked within 5 minutes and skilful Thai chefs often cook a meal in 3 minutes. There is a story that Mongolian Horsemen invented the wok by using their shields as cooking bowls. I think the leather arm grips would prevent that and I believe lived on mares milk and blood milked from their horses plus what they could acquisition from new territories.I am certain that the Chinese adopted the wok because it requires such a small amount of fuel to cook a meal. We use the small Asian single burner camp stoves using small pressure cans of gas that last about 30 minutes or six meals. Your barbecue looks great but my Australian barbecue used a 9kg bottle in about 3 meals. I am interested in your cooking methods and meals on the high seas. Cheers Bob

Your protruding BBQ pipe mount on your rear deck is a nasty trip hazard and even worse if at night some one has to go aft in nasty seas for any reason and has a fall. I suggest you mount it in a way so that it protrudes below the deck for safety reasons.

Luckyfish is credit to her builder for sure, not too many Wharrams with her standard of finish for sure.. but they are out there if you are patient. BUT I imagine you are possibly restricted to the tropics, since the pod could get a bit chilly, and noisy, in heavy rainfall and high winds. In saying that:- why leave the tropics if you can avoid it.

can you detail the rope hinges on the doors through the hull please , they look a really simple and good solution , the videos are really fun , wharrams are really impressive once seen up close , with many really good details (like the rope hinges )

It starts with figure of eight stopper knot on the underside, pass through one side of hinge out the top, then you go down through the gap and back up in the otherside. And so one. I really like the mix of old school and modern. Twin vanes then pulleys to drop the motors. Love it. It's a lot different and I'm sure a unique way to cruise. What kind of speed does she get under sail? Also, while I'm asking questions.... In one of your early videos I remember an issue with a separation at the transom, was this rectified? Was it a design issue?
+Albion Parrot, thanks for picking up on the blend of old and new tech. Its one of the things we really enjoy about developing this boat. Picking the best from both worlds without being blinded only by one. Speed is excellent for a cruising boat, on all points of sail from sheets just cracked to dead flat off. She does half the wind speed or better up to about 12 knots wind speed tight to broad reaching. 8-9 knots with ease in 18 to 20 knot true wind. On a recent passage from Grenada to Exumas we covered 1058 miles in 6 days 21 hours ave speed 6.44 kts in a variety of conditions. Pretty respectable! Our transatlantic of 5,000 miles from Namibia to Barbados included Doldrums and awkward seas at times. We averaged 5.5 knots over all. Again, very respectable considering we had a novice crew and didnt push the boat. Re the delamination on the lapstrake, that was starboard hull forward and turned out to be an epoxy fillet that cracked away from the glass, likely due to the pounding we got in the Benguella current. It has since been glued and has presented no further problems. It was not structural thankfully! Cheers and great to get your questions, Stewart

I love the rope hinges too! What a great simple solution. Easy to inspect and replace. I have spent a lot of time learning knots and this is another use that I will keep using!

+Raymond Engle we are doing more videos on the lashings soon. Re the nasty seas! we have seen a few!!! Apart from the Benguella current off Sth Africa and the equatorial soup off the coast of Brazil ( every swell from far off storms in the Sth and Nth Atlantic seem to meet there and have a bouncy castle party...) we were hit by a horrible vertical wave in the Gulf of Mexico where the Florida current (offshoot from the Gulf Stream). We are still here to tell the tale thanks to our low centre of effort and wide stable platform (without daggerboards !!) cheers from Stew

Must totally agree with Stephen. I was looking at Hunter 44DS monohull. I think I am sold on the catamaran. How often do you have to replace the forward between hull netting due to uv deterioration? Again Thanks for the video and sage advice. Marc
+Marcus Russell - we used that Pilchard net from new. I reckon it should be good for 5 years. In hindsight I would go with "supertramp" a more closed mesh design used on many of the production cats. Not sure of life expectancy. 10 years maybe?
Great tour team! Have you been happy with the Takacat? I am giving consideration to one of these as an auxiliary tender on board out 48' ocean cruising yacht. I like the fact that they can be packed down into a bag for stowage. Do you find that yours can be a bit light in strong winds and will dance around or flip? Cheers. Wade.
+Bluewater dreamin thanks! we love the takacat due to it's lightweight, stability, and semi rigid high pressure floor. we have never had it flip. when it's tethered to the stern and we are on anchor we use a short tether and keep it in the lee of the boat when the wind is up. we tow it but stow it on deck or in bags for longer trips or if it's blowing. How fast will she sail?
+Zone Television, great question. Best days run so far is 190 miles. We just averaged 6.44 knots on a 700 mile leg Grenada to Long Island. Not too shabby. Fastest surf so far is 15 knots with coffee mugs sitting on the table. So stable and under control of the vane. regular surfs to 13 knots. Sustained 8-9 knots reaching, again stable and no fuss. cheers Stew

+lucky 748 Thanks for that. Thats a great question and its not an issue. Yes we get the occasional cavitation roar when steaming straight into a nasty chop but it really isnt a problem. For all the other occasions, having the weight of them in the middle of the boat plus ease of access and the maneuverability (turns on a dime) - well the plus's far outweigh the -'s in my view. Is this a Wharram Tiki catamaran?
Luckyfish is a Wharram Tiki 38.
I LOVE to see the up-close details of your boat. I shall be stealing liberally from as many as possible of those really nifty details in the building of my Mālolonui (Big Flying Fish) proa.
Iʻm attempting, as strictly as possible, to make the construction out of nothing but wood, resin(s), fiberglass, dacron and ropework (running and standing rigging, and structural lashing). Keeping the metal at a minimum is a goal that may stretch my ingenuity, but Iʻll give it a shot. Computer-like electronics do NOT count as "metal" to me, so they'll have their place, albeit as "minimalistic" as possible.
Can NOT beat those ropework hinges, by the way.
Also,.. you guys should have a bi-annual (twice-a-year) raffle (for charity, or new sound equipment [hint] or somesuch) to get the latest improvised thingamawhatzit from the fertile MacGiverish minds of the denizens of the Lucky Fish!
..and I think I owe you guys more sea-shanties memorializing the "further travels of the good ship Lucky Fish". A bit difficult to do based on a "Boat Tour" video, but we'll see...

I'm looking at changing from mono to cat as I feel as I get older it will be a tad easier on me...lol (Hope my partner doesn't see that bit, the shit she will give me ! )
I mainly do coastal with the occassional trip from oz to NZ, unfortunately my partners job and family commitments mean I do quite a bit of solo sailing.
So my question is, do you think your wharram and it's rigging is conducive for soloing ? Particularly keeping in mind your comments on gaff sails.
