Jonathan Safran Foer Interview: On Donald Trump

  • We met Jonathan Safran Foer, a star of American literature, who offers interesting perspectives on America’s new president and the consequences Donald Trump will have on American culture. "The place for literature may be even more important than before," says Foer.
“It’s a very moving thing to vote. It’s emotional, it feels good,” says Foer, who tries hard to be an active political citizen and does not hold back on his support for Hillary Clinton. The shock of the election was great: “The first response among many of my peers was actually not exactly shock, and it wasn’t anger. It was sadness.” Many of Foer’s friends cried, and the alienation and discomfort caused by the election is all the more upsetting because of the novelty of the situation. In the past, candidates have reflected party values, but as Foer puts it “Trump is so different. Nobody knows what his values are and nobody knows what appropriate means of resistance could be.”
The most upsetting question to Foer is that of the future: “What kind of world are we creating for our children?” However, with a known misogynist in the White House, Foer hopes the current political situation can generate resistance. “Just as the election awakened a kind of shame, it also awakened a pride we didn’t know we had.”
While Foer sees that the voice of the author can drown in the media, he does see an important place for literature in the political conversation. A book, says Foer, is the opposite of a wall. “A book invites people in instead of keeping people out,” inviting readers to make ”leaps of empathy”. And while the solution to the problems of race, class and democracy in America will never be empathy and compassion alone, Foer reminds us: “The solution will never come about without empathy and compassion.”
Jonathan Safran Foer was interviewed by Christian Lund at the Copenhagen Admiral Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark, in February 2017.

Love it! Love the mixture of intellectual posturing and absolute base level opinions! This is the definition of middle brow pompous.

The only good thing about this video is the way he looks. Just as he is walking stereotype of intellegent people. And actually it's the only good thing that about this video (even so I really appreciate 'Everything is illuminated'). The only thing that American democracy can bring to other people is death and slavery. Hope someday it'll change. And of course I totally think that intellegent people like writers should stay out of politics. They have to try to help the whole society to be better and not to divide people through politics (as professional politicians actually do). Writers have huge responsibility which they must not to use as a political tool or self ambition tool which I think are the same things.

Each president, beginning with Reagan has been worse than the last. It's hard to imagine what could be worse than what we have now. But so far, over the years, the challenge of finding a worse and worse president has been met.

The overwhelmingly pro-Trump comments on this thread reflect mainstream thought, which is divergent from the Jewish, New York, Ivory Tower perspective of Mr. Foer.

Michael Reilly They wouldn't be in "show business" if they liked Trump. Democrats are a singular non-thinking borg bent on the destruction of the West. Wish they would just fucking move to an Islamic or Communist state, they do exist. But, no they have to destroy the West, which there is only one of. Fucking assholes.

Since Trump spent the G7 attacking our allies while insisting Russia be readmitted and then cozying up to North Korea, I wonder wtf you're talking about. Trump is the one who seems to want to destroy the West. I really wish you hated Putin and Kim Jung Un as much as you hate Democrats. That's the problem we're in now. You folks will watch all of our rights and our safeguards to the environment and liberty and a free press be stripped away just because it pisses off Democrats.

Michael Reilly Hahahahaha War is coming. You know Obama changed the definition of terrorist to "patriots" and those who like the "founding fathers"? Liberalism has been destroying our rights and liberties since the 60s. Obama ERASED the 4th Amendment to the Constitution. We've watched the "Press" lie and lie and lie for 8 years under Obama. You still believe them. We like Trump and hate Democrats and Establishment Republicans, you haven't had a paradigm shift yet. The Democrats colluded with the FBI, the Media, and the Republican party to get Clinton in office... and they still lost. Under Obama, the Media and Democrat Party had ABSOLUTE POWER and are now Absolutely Corrupt. The American People are with Trump. We want the Patriot Act dissolved, the Border closed, the 4th Amendment reinstated, and the Demilitarization of our Police. With a border we don't need to lose our rights. You are on the wrong side buddy. Better get with us before the shit hits the fan. The TV is always lying to you. We know this from living under Obama and having to get news from elsewhere. I bet Clinton barely got the votes they said she got. This is Trump's America... the Corporate Media just hasn't realized it. They're insane. God Speed my friend!
