  • Interview with American writer Jonathan Safran Foer, in which he reflects on the power of literature in general and poetry in particular. Foer also argues that art always has a personal point of departure, where the artist confronts the world and rearranges it.
In this interview Jonathan Safran Foer (born 1977) reflects on various media and cultural activities. Personally, he is fascinated by film, but at all the critical moments of life Foer has been drawn to the unique power of literature, and especially poetry. However, all true art and culture has a common ground, Foer says. Unlike most other activities in society, art and culture are produced without a direct function and solely for their own sake. Foer argues that every work of art -- whether it is a painting, a book, a film or a piece of music -- is highly subjective at heart. Foer further explains why his novels often revolve around the theme of the family. "How can you not write about it," he asks, "since everybody is confronted with the subject, even those who have lost their family or grew up without it?" It would be much more relevant, he claims, to ask J.K. Rowling why she writes about wizards.
Jonathan Safran Foer was interviewed by Synne Rifbjerg.

He's so clear and enlightening, I love how confident he shows himself in his own way of understanding the world and the work of the writer. Awesome inspiration for those who want to make sth out of art!

I had agreed, but while I listened with empathy, that connection soon dwindled as soon as you mentioned a deeper connection to video. I do like the mystery of a good romantic comedy, or a video that has more than one story (sub-plot) within it, so that my mind can be entertained. I find that most video that tries to intrique us is hodge podge with the way they start in the middle and show us the end (etc). The video that I feel is expertly done has at least two sub-plots and great narration..

Though I wonder if you have read, "New York," by Rutherford? Or the novel that Stephen King started in 1971, and finally wrote it and finished the series just two years ago. Then he has connected other novels to this story. I ask that you listen 2 these books Nstead of read them. It may take a second 2 get used 2, but listen N UR car, or at night. Gunslinger, Dark Tower 1-7 & The Black House. This discombobulated line of stories ends N a suprising story that mixes poetry, history, & belief.

Stoner by John Williams is a novel that just narrating the story misses the point of the book.

Write music lyrics, write books or write short stories in that order. Writing poetry will get you ridicule and an audience of poets. It's also one of the most beautiful things you can do in the world, but society has an indirect way of stamping it out.
