I am an innovation consultant who had to create a brand strategy for several startups, the suggested "brand strategy framework" is almost exactly aligned with the conceptual framework I developed for myself.
I'm a designer by qualification but over many years I've become a self-taught jack-of-all-trades for my clients when it comes to brand and communications. I've always found brand meets marketing meets business strategy very complicated and most often unnecessarily so. I developed my own hybrid approach but still - even though I have been consulting on these issues for years - I have continued to feel confused by the plethora of different frameworks. I find your approach brilliant in how it distills the process down to logical and reasoned aspects that I can easily communicate to my clients in a way that makes business sense, devoid of buzzwords and confusion.Thank you
Great to hear Kristy.. If its easy to confuse the pros, imagine how clients feel. Branding is about making complicated things simple from top to bottom, inside to out :)
It’s a pleasure meeting you if you don’t mind I would love to be your friend. I’m also a brand designer a self taught I believe we can network and get better for the next generation
00:00 Brand strategy is a long term plan for building reputation. 02:06 Building a brand requires a strategy to connect with the audience through human engagement. 04:01 Brand strategists devise a plan of brand expression that will shape audience perceptions. 06:21 Developing a successful brand strategy requires a clearly defined framework. 08:27 Follow a brand strategy framework 10:37 Developing a strong brand personality is key to resonating with your audience. 12:47 Craft a storytelling framework and define your marketing plan to understand your audience 14:52 Building a brand requires awareness, adoption, and advocacy.
As a brand marketing practitioner, this course is amazingly simplified in a short time to get the helicopter view of making brand strategy. I find it easy to digest and look forward to a study (brand) case. So many times I found confusion about brand and communication approaches, learning from one brand to another, which left me focusing on the marketing plan rather than the foundation. Thanks a lot, Sir! this is GOLD. I learned a lot. Looking forward to the brand example. New subscriber here ;)
Wah, as a visual designer, I start my design process out with so much of what you have just touched on without realizing I was building strategy. It's a TON of upfront work and can be hard to explain to some small entrepreneurs who just "want a logo" that these things are incredibly important before figuring out a direction for their visual identity. So many come back to me after the fact saying going through defining many of these points has helped them understand their business so much more. It's definitely a value added to MY process that I probably should be highlighting more as a service. For my personal design business, I have found so much value in this video - time for me to rethink my offerings and prices! :) Consider me a subscriber!!
So I’m a brand strategist and what you’re saying is absolute GOLD! I can’t wait to take your course! The more knowledge the more power! I’m so glad I found you! TY!
I'm so grateful for this video, thank you! I'm a graphic designer, starting to learn now about brand strategy. This should really influence the way I create the visuals for my clients. Thank you
Therefore, one can say a brand strategist is someone who helps businesses deeply understand who they are, their essence Identity in order to present themselves well to the target market.
Thanks a ton for this wonderful video. I am a designer & I am learning and specialising in brand identity design, logo & packaging design as a freelancer. Every word in this video is worth it. Appreciate your willingness & effort to share this wonderful knowledge to us!
This is exactly what I was looking for, your clarity in explanation walks the talk of what you're saying and now your branding course in my brain is now synonymous with a 1 stop guide to branding content.. Thanks for this and looking forward to more of your content and deep dives. #UgandanFan👌🏽💯🇺🇬😊
As Head of Brand myself, im curious to gear your thoughts on how to approach an already established b2b2c business(20 years) with multiple different products spanning multiple industries - around 10 products across 8 different verticals, which can all be purchased/used independently but equally all have multiple USPs per product that make them unique within each industry. All this across multiple geographies and cultures, too. For me the best solution here is to tailor the messaging to each of these million audiences and follow the same comms channels with small tweaks over time once the data shows results. Keen to hear your thoughts of possible
My philosophy is "One brand, one position". While this is simplistic, it provides clarity in such complex situations. Each product might have its own USP and target a different market, but it must align with the brand. Differentiated marketing and messaging on a product level allows for that specificity though it must remain aligned with the brand.
I really like how you have made these steps very simple and yet powerful, I do have one criticism though, step 12 - define your "marketing plan", well having been a marketing guy for the past too many years I have to tell you that Marketing encompasses Brand Strategy not the other way around, I use brand strategy as part of my marketing strategy. There is a whole lot more to consider prior to building a Brand Strategy which includes product development feasibility studies and the entire production and support structure that allows you to have a product that you can take to market. Please don't think that I am down playing Brand Strategy this is a critical part of the global Marketing Strategy but if you do not pay attention to the whole of the business then you are missing out on the product which you need a Brand Strategy for.
Thanks for your input Dennis, I quite enjoy hearing different perspectives and philosophies. From my perspective, I believe that “Branding” has evolved. Previously, “Branding” was taught as a small subset of marketing, though I believe it has become the overarching discipline as it governs everything from diversity and inclusivity to business operations, product development, marketing campaigns and beyond. The brand is the entity that shapes perceptions in the market. Those perceptions are shaped by choreographed touchpoints that make up the entire brand experience which includes everything from product usage to customer service calls. When the brand has been created (including the plan for positioning, personalty, verbal identity, messaging, storytelling an visual identity), it’s ready for a plan to mobilise that brand in the market. Again, this is my philosophy and I understand it conflicts with more traditional methods, but don’t branding to be sub-set of marketing anymore.
@@BrandMasterAcademy Thanks for your reply. I have to point out that my intention was not to make small of the importance or the evolution that Branding has undergone over the past years and in fact I embrace the whole ideology of branding but I still see Marketing as the overarching discipline that includes Brand Strategy rather than seeing Brand Strategy as separate, there are still important areas that must be covered, such as Go-To-Market Strategy, I am a proponent of Channel management for this and the entire Channel Management Program is missing from BRand Strategy whereas it is included in Marketing. I have listened to a podcast on this topic and it was apparent from the discussion that Brand Strategists had not considered the full gamut of what is needed. Once again brand Strategy is no small or insignificant matter, in fact these days it has a well disserved and significant role to play in the success of any organisation. I look forward to your response and continued discussion on this topic.
Great video man and very insightful, im not sure if its something you might want to edit but there is a typo for the word "Brochure" at 7:05 minutes under the visual elements deliverables section. Love your videos, keep it up!
What a knowledge! 👊 Thank you for sharing this with us! I'm just wondering, can a brand designer (visual aspects) be a strategist, too? Or maybe it is a bit too much skills for one person to handle?
This is something I would to know as well. I do love it all but I do feel like would I even sleep 😪 would be lovely if you could also create a video managing brand projects (end to end timeframes)
Of course, if this is the way you want to go... I would suggest over time, you might come to a cross roads and end up leaving some of the design work behind when you see that it's the strategy that actually moves the needle for clients (And increases your value)
Thank you.. Consummable knowledge. How do we know what the customer wants when we are starting in an entrepreneurial journey for the first time with zero leads? Where do we get that information from?
Define your target audience, go out and find them, then ask them through interviews and surveys... If you know a perfect client type, give them a call and ask them as many questions as you can
Hi! Thanks for your great explanation! I am a graphic designer and I'm trying to experiment with brand strategy with a real world client who already has a brand but it's not as clearly defined as it should based on this video. Will this method still be valid for a brand that already exists?
Yes, the strategy works for existing brands too. It's about aligning what's already there with core values and audience needs. Your graphic design skills will be a big plus in visually representing these changes. Good luck!
Great video very informative I really appreciate all the hard work but it’s a bit complicated hope you can simplify it and summarize it more so a broader audience can understand
Thank you so much for this insight - taking notes furiously! 😊As a sign maker and packaging manufacturer may I add @ 7:04 two visual categories which may also be of importance: signage identity guide and packaging concepts. Cheers and keep up the great work . Thank you
A brand is about font, logo, and colors. It is not just about that, but these things do matter. Even pricing is important when it comes to branding. You have to take these small pieces of the puzzle to target personalities or mold personalities. For example, Apple got my attention because of the simplicity. The conservative colors, the sleek design and etc. That is my personality. Their logo is minimalistic as well. They use subtle fonts for lack of a better term. Recently I've been looking into Citi bank's brand story because I was contacted by them and based on what I've been reading there is a disconnect with their branding. I don't think they want to be seen as prestigious, but the blue they use seems a bit playful in comparison to Morgan Stanley, Goldman, and JP Morgan. In my mind when I see Citi brand image I think the workplace is relaxed, playful, and liberal. A brand strategy alway starts with the personality you are trying to sell to. Granted! Some products you have to mold the buyer's persona as you go along, but majority of the time packaging, logo, font, and product design have to tell the story of the brand based on target personalty. You can even go has far as hiring employees with a certain personality.
